In this episode of Our Uncommon Life, Vena shares a personal update on stepping into menopause and how the journey hasn't unfolded the way she expected.Unlike the gradual lead-up many women describe, there weren't years of obvious perimenopause red flags. Instead, the shift felt sudden ; with intense hot flashes and unmistakable physical signals that something had changed. What started as the assumption of “probably peri” quickly became the realization that her body was already operating in full menopause mode ... even if the calendar and conventional timelines hadn't quite caught up.We talk openly about:The surprise of rapid symptom onsetNavigating hot flashes and body changes in real timeReconciling expectations vs. realityMaking proactive decisions around starting HRTThe role of partnership and how Zac has shown up as a teammate through the unknowns, the conversations, and the adjustmentsListening to your body instead of waiting for textbook confirmationThis conversation isn't about medical advice, it's about ownership, awareness, and trusting yourself through transitions that don't always follow predictable paths. It's also a reminder that navigating life changes isn't a solo effort, and that support, communication, and humor matter when you're figuring things out together. As always, Our Uncommon Life is about sharing the real chapters : building businesses, investing in marriage, and evolving through every season life brings.
I was thinking also in terms of the Avanti brāhmaṇa, as he had also become disgusted with material life, just as Aṅga, Vena's father, had walked away. The Avanti brāhmaṇa had walked away because he had been a wealthy landowner, and then he got stingy. He didn't offer sufficient respect to the demigods or to his family members, and he gradually lost everything. But in the course of his daily activities, a brāhmaṇa had come to him and offered him an opportunity to print some books—I'm not making this up, it's in the commentary—especially the Bhagavad-gītā and some other books, and also to help build a temple for a beautiful Deity, which he did. Even though he lost everything and he had been impious in many ways, that seed, that kernel, stayed in his heart: that he had done something for Kṛṣṇa. That's what prompted him to just embrace whatever fate he had in the material world. etāṁ sa āsthāya parātma-niṣṭhām adhyāsitāṁ pūrvatamair maharṣibhiḥ ahaṁ tariṣyāmi duranta-pāraṁ tamo mukundāṅghri-niṣevayaiva (SB 11.23.57) He uttered: 'I shall cross over the material world by being firmly fixed in the service of Lord Kṛṣṇa.' This was approved by the previous ācāryas, who are fixed in firm devotional service to Lord, Paramātmā, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And he had that staunch faith, and it came from just a little devotional service—printing books, by the way. So we see those also—the way people come to a conclusion of walking away from the material world and that's a catharsis for us, too. It's like, 'They did it; I can do it also.' Sthāne sthitāḥ śruti-gatāṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir (SB 10.14.3). The Bhāgavatam doesn't recommend such abrupt processes, necessarily, but it still gives us an understanding deep in our heart. It's an emotional transformation, as Radhika Raman Prabhu mentioned. Not all memory is intellectual; it's emotional. That was a very fine point, because many people say, 'What's the good of karma and the lesson of karma if I can't remember what I did?' But there's emotional memory. We take it in our hearts very deeply that I've been involved in many things in this material world. And when the Bhāgavatam brings it out and shows it to us, we feel in our heart, "Yes, I've been involved in such things. No más—that's it. I don't want this anymore. I want only the life of purity following Kṛṣṇa." ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 https://thefourquestionsbook.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=launch2025 ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #

What happens when a lifelong hairstylist-turned-life-coach steps away from the salon and builds one of the most flexible, hyper-local coworking models I've ever seen? You get The Foundry Workspaces, created and operated by Vena Boddy, who brings an action-oriented, community-centered approach to coworking that works beautifully in her Michigan suburb. In this episode, Vena shares her unexpected journey into coworking, how her husband's early entrepreneurial experiences inspired their model, and why she leaned fully into fractional private offices instead of the typical dedicated office or open coworking setup. If you've ever wondered whether part-time private offices can actually work, Vena is proof that they can—not only functionally, but profitably. We talk about: How her background as a hairstylist and certified life coach shaped her philosophy as an operator How she runs a mostly unstaffed space while still delivering a boutique, high-touch experience Why her day passes and conference room rentals have become an unexpectedly strong revenue driver The power of being embedded in the local community—especially in smaller markets Why her 24 five-star Google reviews in year one are no accident The Foundry Workspaces' next chapter: a new workshop space coming in 2026 Vena's story is such a refreshing reminder that coworking doesn't have to look one certain way. The 100-year-old P Judge and Suns Trucking and Warehousing Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey, listing both assets and liabilities between $1 million and $10 million. The podcast covers the ongoing debate surrounding the proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern, which UP CEO Jim Vena advocated for at the RailTrends industry conference. Vena stressed that the United States should not be the only country in North America without seamless rail service, noting that the merger is necessary to enable railroads to compete with the trucking industry. Strong opposition to the deal comes from Western Railroad BNSF, which views the merger as a disruption that would likely lead to a reshaping of the entire North American Rail Network. BNSF's chief marketing officer highlighted that customers are not advocating for the merger, and that existing transcontinental options are already practical through collaboration. It's equal parts fun date night and emotional connection.
We've all said it: “It's fine.” But what happens when fine becomes your new normal? In this episode, Zac and Vena dig into that sneaky comfort zone we all fall into... the one where things aren't bad, but they're not great either. Whether it's your business, relationship, or daily routine, that feeling of “fine” can keep you from chasing what's truly fulfilling. They talk about recognizing when you're settling, how to course-correct before burnout or resentment sets in, and why “fine” is the ultimate red flag for high-achievers who crave more from life.

This week on Our Uncommon Life, we're keeping things light and fun as we recap our weekend getaway up in Traverse City ...complete with family time, crab legs, and a little chaos (because of course). We chat about what it's like for Zac to hang out with his in-laws (spoiler: he actually always enjoys it), our four-year anniversary of owning the condo, and the mix of nostalgia and gratitude that comes with that milestone. From all-you-can-eat crab legs and a few lucky (or not-so-lucky) spins at the casino, to checking out new local favorites like Sisters and Glendale Burgers, it was one of those perfectly imperfect weekends that reminded us why we love this place so much.Zac also got to sneak in a golf day with the guys at Grand Traverse Resort, while Vena… had a slightly less glamorous morning at Munson Hospital for what we're now calling “the Great Gas Incident of 2025.” (Don't worry, she lived to tell the tale.)It's a weekend recap episode full of laughter, real-life moments, and the reminder that the best memories are usually the unplanned ones.
Listen in as The Goo director Eliza Palter, along with performers Vena Howard & Kat Quiñones, discuss unintended distance from your friends, efficient vibes, the built-up pressure of your 20s, creating compelling stage pictures on a picnic blanket, activating ideas … Continue reading →

Have you ever noticed that the tighter you try to hold onto something...whether it's money, a business idea, or even a relationship, the quicker it seems to slip through your fingers? In this episode of Our Uncommon Life, Zac and Vena dive deep into the power of mindset and how the way you think can make or break not just your business, but also your marriage. We're breaking down the difference between a scarcity mindset (clinging to what's familiar, afraid to lose it, or refusing to adapt) versus a growth mindset (open to change, learning, and expansion). From outdated business practices that keep entrepreneurs stuck, to old habits in marriage that prevent couples from truly growing together, we share our honest thoughts on how mindset shows up in every area of life. You'll hear:Why scarcity mindset feels “safe” but actually limits your potential in both business and relationshipsHow growth mindset fuels entrepreneurship, small business success, and deeper connection in marriageIf you're an entrepreneur, a small business owner, or just someone who wants a stronger marriage while chasing big dreams, this conversation will help you see the power of loosening your grip and opening yourself up to growth.Because the most important business we run… is our marriage.Book Mention : Mindset by Carol Dweck
After 14 years of marriage, we've learned that love, growth, and plenty of laughter are the real markers of success. In this special anniversary episode of Our Uncommon Life, we celebrate our journey as a couple by asking each other fun (and sometimes unexpected!) questions:What's the best piece of marriage advice we'd give to someone starting out?Which memories stand out most from the past 14 years? What are we most proud of in our marriage and businesses? And—how exactly did Vena shock Zac with her take on long-term love?As married entrepreneurs, we've built businesses, taken big risks, and traveled the world together...all while making our marriage the foundation that supports it all. From where we started to where we are today, this episode is a mix of reflection, celebration, and lessons we hope inspire other couples to keep building a life they love.If you're looking for real talk about marriage, entrepreneurship, and why we believe in traveling often and prioritizing each other, you won't want to miss this one. After 14 years, we still wouldn't do life any other way—but uncommon.
Years ago, Laura and Pino Pugliano gifted bottles of olive oil at their wedding—never imagining it would inspire a thriving business. Our episode traces their heartfelt journey, where romance and tradition intertwine, from the charm of a small Italian town to the bustling enterprise they run today. As we explore their story, we also uncover the rich heritage of Vena di Maida, where Albanian and Italian cultures have coexisted since the 1400s. The Arbëreshë community, with its enduring language, customs, and recipes, illustrates how migration shaped Italy's cultural mosaic of resilience and continuity. Our journey then turns to Calabria's lush olive groves, where the ancient art of olive oil production still thrives. From its sacred uses in Rome to its place at modern tables, olive oil remains a timeless symbol of nourishment and identity. We highlight its health benefits, economic role, and the importance of sustainability—challenging listeners to value authentic, high-quality oils that honor Italy's agricultural legacy. Masamune Shirow y Ghost in the shell revolucionaron el cyberpunk y la ciencia-ficción. Friday April 11 was the Global Climate Strike called by Fridays For Future, the group started by Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg. More than 50 people, mainly students, demonstrated at the State Capitol in Albany. We hear music by Terri Roben; Ryan, the local FFF organizer; Mark Dunlea of PAUSE/350 Albany and GELF (Green Education and Legal Fund); Kelsey from UAlbany; Vena; Matt Oill from XR and Socialist Alternative; and Hannah and RPI Sunrise. With President Trump having declared war on the transition to clean, renewable energy, it is critical that state lawmakers and Governor Hochul reverse course and include major climate measures in the state budget, starting with NY Heat, GAP, and the Renewable Capitol Act. Many spoke about the need to oppose capitalism and colonialism.
Welcome back to Our Uncommon Life, where we explore the dynamic journey of marriage, health, entrepreneurship, and communication.Sometimes in marriage, you have to let your partner do their thing and not interject, even when you might think, “Is this really a good idea?” Between Zac's crazy business ideas and Vena's unconventional weight loss methods, we've learned that letting each other figure things out without nagging is a win-win situation. (Of course, if something could cause harm, financial hardship, or other serious issues, please interject—no one wants to end up on a reality TV show for all the wrong reasons!) We believe that asking questions about each other's motivations, doing our own research, and trusting one another is a better way to support each other than immediately shooting down an idea.
