Welcome to another episode of the NAVAS podcast! How many times in your career, after recommending a surgical or dental procedure for a dog or cat, have you been asked whether a beloved aging pet was too old to be anesthetized? Today, we're diving into a topic that many veterinary professionals encounter but may not always feel fully prepared for: anesthesia for senior dogs and cats. Older pets can present unique challenges when it comes to sedation and general anesthesia, and understanding how aging impacts their physiology is key to providing safe and effective care. In this episode, we have the honor of speaking with Dr. Sheliah Robertson, a veterinary anesthesiologist who is also board-certified in animal welfare and the senior medical director at Lap of Love, a network of veterinary at-home euthanasia and hospice care providers. Dr. Robertson brings a wealth of experience and insight into the world of anesthesia for geriatric pets. We'll be discussing everything from anesthetic risks and frailty in older animals to how aging affects vital organ function and what that means for anesthesia protocols. This conversation is guaranteed to be packed with valuable information to enhance your understanding and improve outcomes for your older patients. Helen St. Pierre, founder of NH non-profit, Old Dogs Go To Helen, joins the pod today to talk about senior dogs. "We don't talk about seniors enough! I am very guilty of this as my job often doesn't include seniors." - NikkiNikki heard Helen speak at the annual LEGS Conference where she opened Nikki's eyes to adjusting our homes and expectations with our senior dogs, not just our pups and adolescent dogs. Old Dogs Go To Helen is not a facility or a shelter. It is a sanctuary for senior and hospice dogs and hub for people who love old dogs, want to rescue or adopt them, and if they can't, they can donate to help them however they can until that dog finds their forever home. Dogs that need further testing, dogs that need special food, dogs that need costly medical expenses, and dogs that need to be highlighted over others because they aren't as young and spry as the rest. We share older dogs available for adoption there or those that are in need of things. We work with shelters and rescues to help these dogs get what they need without the shelter or rescue having to drain their own resources. It is the best way we can help as many dogs as we can without having them all on our sofa. The plan for this is to help spread awareness of the joys of senior dog adoption, to help people see how bringing an old dog into your home, for no matter how long, is simply one of the best things you can do for your soul, not to mention what it does for the dog. And if people want to support the mission or cause they can, and if not, they can see some really cute grey faces and maybe tell their friends!" Find Helen and support her cause! Lauren Back from Girls Gone Raw is back in the studio. She knows her stuff when it comes to taking care of older dogs and cats.Aging is a normal part of life, and at some point all dogs become seniors. The important thing to know is that senior dogs have different care requirements than young ones.As a dog ages, they become less mobile, their hearing and sight aren't as good as they used to be, and they are more prone to various diseases. Still, getting older isn't a death sentence and dogs can spend their golden years healthy and happy.Join the Wildside for updates and discounts!Learn more about Steve's Real Foods.Learn more about Northwest Naturals.Learn more about Lifetime Pet Wellness Center. We are a local, independent, and owner-operated shop that is committed to providing the dogs and cats in our hometown of Columbus, Ohio with the best possible foods, supplements, and gear available. Hound Opinions is on a bit of a break this week. There'll be a new episode in two weeks, but in the meantime, enjoy this rebroadcast of Bill's chat with Lisa Lunghofer of the Grey Muzzle Organization. By the way, Bill's older pup, Chester, turns 13 next week! Because Chester's a mensch, he wants to use his Bark Mitzvah to do some good! So he's raising money for the Grey Muzzle Organization because senior dogs are the best. If you'd like to donate, that'd be awesome. Head on over to https://www.facebook.com/donate/910542973480995/. Fact – senior dogs are awesome. There's really nothing like a senior dog. They're often happy to just spend time on the couch with you. They might let you sleep in on weekends. They don't require super-long walks or play sessions to get their energy out. What's not to love, right? But despite being amazing, senior dogs that wind up in shelters or rescues are often overlooked in favor of younger dogs and puppies. They're some of the hardest dogs to adopt out. And that needs to change. On the pod with Bill is Lisa Lunghofer. She's the executive director of The Grey Muzzle Organization. The mission of The Grey Muzzle Organization is to improve the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries and other nonprofit groups nationwide. Today on the show, Valerie Reid, who started the non-profit Whispering Willows Senior Dog Sanctuary. The mission? To provide an extraordinary retirement community for senior dogs who find themselves unhoused and unhumaned. Elderly dogs find their way to Valerie for one of several reasons. Their human may have passed, and their surviving family members can't provide proper care. Other dogs come from horrendous hoarding situations. Others are rescued from horrible conditions at drug houses. Peanut, who watches over Valerie throughout this conversation, is a drug house rescue. As he sits on Valerie's lap, you would never guess this serene little one-eyed gentleman was found blistered and scalded and in desperate need of care. He was left in a cage in 90-degree weather with no food or water. Those who used the drug house he was rescued from didn't let him out to pee, so he had terrible urine scald. His skin was blistered from the beating sun. Who would take in such a pathetic creature, who had so much need? Whispering Willows, Valerie's nonprofit. Whispering Willows is a senior dogs' paradise. A gracious home on five acres of fenced property in Missouri gives them shelter and food and companionship for the rest of their days. The dogs are never left alone or caged. They have free range to go where they want, whenever they want. They receive 24-hour care and live as a family with their Caregivers. They are never, ever alone, right up until the end. About Valerie Reid Valerie Reid is the President and Founder of Whispering Willows. Since starting the sanctuary, Whispering Willows has been able to offer full time care for over 600 senior dogs. Over 550 of those seniors have passed over the Rainbow Bridge, with love being whispered until their last breath. One thing that every dog owner can agree on is that a dog's life is too short and they age way too quickly.   In this episode, Chad Kemp (dog dad to @dill_pickle_and_his_dad) tells us that even if your pooch is a senior, it can still be an adventure dog.  While the adventures may not look the same as they did when your furry friend was a pup, there are plenty of ways to give your senior dog an adventurous life.  Tune in to hear about the many adventures that Dill, who is 9 years old, enjoys.  This episode is gurantted to spark some adventure ideas for your furry companion.  One of Dill's favorite adventure spots is George Washington's Mount Vernon located in Mount Vernon, VA (right outside of Washington, DC) and Chad provides lots of insight about this favorite spot.    With mostly flat terrain, beautiful views of the Potomac River, and lots of farm animals, this is a must visit adventure spot.  Even if you are not a DMV local, this is an adventure spot that is worth the drive to check out.  While dogs are not allowed in the mansion, they can explore all of the approximately 2 miles of grounds and enjoy a sniffari like none other.  Plus, it is an adventure spot that dogs of all ages will enjoy.  So be sure to tune in and get some great tips and hear the review of a great dog friendly spot. Be sure to check out our website www.k9adventurespodcast.com and our IG feed @k9adventurespodcast for more great content.
