Great to reconnect with Phil Collen of Def Leppard. If you didn't know, he has some other projects outside of his main band. One of them is a band called Man Raze. Back in May, they dropped their Lock, Stock & Barrel (Complete Recordings 2008-2011) Phil tells me about that, along with another project he's in called Crossbone Skully with Tommy Henriksen of Alice Cooper, and the great Mutt Lange. As he brought that up, I had to ask him about the impact that Mutt had on Def Leppard. Let's just say that Phil gave Mutt a LOT of credit for their success. We talked about new music, upcoming tours, residencies, and lots more. Thanks to Phil for the time and to you for listening. In der Power-Ballade "Waiting For A Girl Like You" zeigt Thomas Dolby sein Können. Schon das Intro mit seinen sphärischen Synthesizer-Klängen war für Foreigner und den Hard Rock der damaligen Zeit eher ungewöhnlich. "Juke Box Hero" schlägt im Vergleich zu "Waiting For A Girl Like You" wieder deutlich rockigere Töne an. Daryl and Lima finally have the answer to one of Cleveland sports radio's greatest mysteries: how much does Red Panda, the legendary NBA halftime unicycle bowl lady, actually get paid per appearance. The guys break down her $6,765 per-show fee, debate whether she's pulling in half a million annually across her full college and NBA tour, and compare her rate to Mutt's Gone Nuts and the Simon Says guy. It's the deep dive nobody asked for and everybody needed.

Let's flashback to 2018, in the weeks after ELLIOT EASTON and THE CARS were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and we recorded this guitar deep dive and career retrospective with Easton in his home studio. On this episode Elliot plugs in and shows you exactly how he created iconic guitar parts that helped the Cars score many high-charting hit albums and singles. Elliot also shares music from his band, THE EMPTY HEARTS, and reflects on what he learned tracking Cars guitar parts with super-producers such as ROY THOMAS BAKER and ROBERT JOHN "MUTT" LANGE. Presented by Guitar Player magazine and guitarplayer.com. Hosted by JUDE GOLD — who, at the beginning of this episode, shows you how he recorded the guitar solo on Jefferson Starship's forthcoming single.
By 1996, Def Leppard needed to try something different. Their 80s heyday had long since passed and the grunge/nu metal era made them unwanted icons of a forgotten age. They got a new wardrobe, split up to write their songs and even left the stylized Def Leppard logo off of their album Slang to tread new paths without longtime producer Mutt Lange. Some saw it as a reaction to grunge as it sounded nothing like Hysteria or Adrenalize which had preceded it - the high harmonies and big, hooky riffs were gone. But Def Leppard fans saw it as the boys stretching out after a decade with Mutt and expressing themselves as mature men dealing with life on their terms. Though The Wolf and Action didn't take to this album when it was released May 13, 1996, a teenaged Neil from Def Lep Pod was all about the Slang record. It came at the right time in his life and Neil knows Slang (as he does so many things Def Leppard) back to front and then some. He knows every demo version of every song and brings not only his generational point of view of the English fans story in contrast to that of Action and The Wolf. Vivian Campbell finally earned songwriting credits on a Def Leppard album and his solo write Work It Out was the 1st single released in the US. Gift of Flesh is as heavy as anything in their catalog and All I Want Is Everything is a huge favorite among the Def Lep faithful. They experiment with Indian instruments on Turn to Dust and achieved three #1 hit singles on the UK Rock/Heavy Metal chart. Though it's the first Def Leppard album to not achieve platinum status in 15+ years, it's an album with individual viewpoints that goes in many directions and offers fans something different than anything else in their catalog. Leon Thomas is a singer, songwriter, producer, and actor. He's nominated for six Grammys at this year's Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Best R&B Album, and Album of the Year for Mutt. Mutt is his second album, and I talked to Leon about the title track, which was a breakout hit. He'd already won a Grammy for his work with SZA, but he reached a new level in his own career with this song and this album. I also spoke to David Phelps and Rob Gueringer, AKA D. Phelps and Freaky Rob, who produced the song. For more info, visit songexploder.net/leon-thomas.

Episode 99: Ty Dolla $ign. One of the only artists to earn TWO diamond records in the last decade, Ty Dolla $ign joins us for a deep, musician-to-musician conversation about a career built on trust, taste, and timeless records. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Ty grew up surrounded by live music through his father, musician Tyrone Griffin Sr. of Lakeside, learning instruments at a young age and developing a deep respect for musicianship before fame ever entered the picture. In this interview, Ty breaks down his journey from South Central LA to becoming one of the most trusted collaborators in modern music. We talk through the early days of Beach House, the breakout impact of “Paranoid” and “Or Nah” with DJ Mustard, and how songwriting and features like “Loyal" and “Psycho” helped shape his rise. Ty reflects on the making of Free TC, the emotional weight behind the album, and carrying his brother with him throughout his career. Ty opens up about working across genres, collaborating with artists like The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, Skrillex, YG, Wiz Khalifa, Terrace Martin, Kanye, and more. We talk his songwriting and production process, and how he approaches features musically, treating voices like instruments and focusing on frequency, tone, and feel over star power. We also dive into his role as a label co-founder with EZMNY Records, signing and developing Leon Thomas, and witnessing Leon's rapid rise from artist development to Grammy-nominated albums (Electric Dusk and Mutt). Ty shares his philosophy on mentorship, artist development, long term friendships, women, and building a label rooted in belief and musicianship. We get into Vultures, creative collaboration at scale, returning to solo work with Tycoon, and what longevity, growth, and being a “musician first” really mean to him today. This is an honest, in-depth look at Ty Dolla $ign's career. The hits, the craft, the relationships, and the long game. I hope you enjoy episode 99. Lets go!! Send us a textHoliday lights were on, but the takes were brighter. We kick off with a quick Christmas hello, then tear through a year that never stopped serving headlines: the messiest couple debate lands on Cardi B and Offset, with Stefan Diggs stepping into the frame and raising the stakes in ways only sports drama can. From there we lock in the Out-of-Pocket Person award for Trump, whose month-to-month spectacle turned policy into performance art and kept the timeline exhausted. When we talk “biggest story,” the Diddy trial towers over everything. We connect the courtroom moments, 50 Cent's executive-produced doc, Cassie's testimony, and the wave of related claims that made this more than a celebrity scandal. It became a lens on power, silence, and how the culture processes allegations when history starts rhyming in public. Our What-The-Hell moment goes to Charlie Kirk for a truly jarring twist, the kind that hijacks a news cycle and lingers.Music fans get fed too. Song of the Year lands on Leon Thomas' Mutt remix with Chris Brown—sticky, soulful, and stubbornly replayable—while Album of the Year goes to Wale for masterful sequencing and no-skip consistency that cut through the noise. We spotlight Kalani as Person of the Year for finally breaking into a broader lane after years of craft and patience. The viral crown? The 6-7 chant, a goofy, irresistible phenomenon that invaded arenas, feeds, and even our gaming habits. We wrap with the Down Bad award for Offset, who spent the year catching public Ls and trying every move to reverse the score. Then it's on to predictions: a potential Drake reset, more Shannon x Katt wildfire, and the political circus refusing to close its tent. Hit play for sharp takes, receipts, and laughs—and when you're done, subscribe, rate, and share this one with a friend who lives for end-of-year rankings. Your picks different? In this episode Panos sits down with Simon, “The Mutt Nut”, a UK-based trainer who's worked at both extremes of the dog-training world — from sled dogs in Norway, to street dogs across Europe, to guide dogs, pet dogs and heavy-duty aggression cases through rescue organisations. Simon's known for his no-nonsense motto: “Cut the fluff and focus on what works.”We dive deep into his journey, the lessons he's collected from wildly different environments, and how those experiences shaped his training philosophy. Simon opens up about industry myths, why trainers conflict, where owners go wrong, and how he blends motivation, play, and tools to get real-world results. We also unpack reactivity and aggression, the lifestyle vs training debate, what play really means to a dog, and why modern pet owners are struggling more than ever. If you're a trainer, an owner, or someone trying to navigate the noise in today's dog-training landscape, this episode will give you clarity, perspective, and a whole lot of practical gems. This episode takes us to a graveyard for Halloween and explores one of the most canonical poems in the English language, poised between two huge eras of poetry as it meditates on how "the paths of glory lead but to the grave." The whole poem can be found below. The image is of Thomas Gray's monument in Stoke Poges, inscribed with his elegy. Photo by UKgeofan at English Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10552507 For more on Thomas Gray, see The Poetry Foundation (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/thomas-gray). Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard By Thomas Gray The curfew tolls the knell of parting day, The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea, The plowman homeward plods his weary way, And leaves the world to darkness and to me. Now fades the glimm'ring landscape on the sight, And all the air a solemn stillness holds, Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight, And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds; Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tow'r The moping owl does to the moon complain Of such, as wand'ring near her secret bow'r, Molest her ancient solitary reign. Beneath those rugged elms, that yew-tree's shade, Where heaves the turf in many a mould'ring heap, Each in his narrow cell for ever laid, The rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep. The breezy call of incense-breathing Morn, The swallow twitt'ring from the straw-built shed, The cock's shrill clarion, or the echoing horn, No more shall rouse them from their lowly bed. For them no more the blazing hearth shall burn, Or busy housewife ply her evening care: No children run to lisp their sire's return, Or climb his knees the envied kiss to share. Oft did the harvest to their sickle yield, Their furrow oft the stubborn glebe has broke; How jocund did they drive their team afield! How bow'd the woods beneath their sturdy stroke! Let not Ambition mock their useful toil, Their homely joys, and destiny obscure; Nor Grandeur hear with a disdainful smile The short and simple annals of the poor. The boast of heraldry, the pomp of pow'r, And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave, Awaits alike th' inevitable hour. The paths of glory lead but to the grave. Nor you, ye proud, impute to these the fault, If Mem'ry o'er their tomb no trophies raise, Where thro' the long-drawn aisle and fretted vault The pealing anthem swells the note of praise. Can storied urn or animated bust Back to its mansion call the fleeting breath? Can Honour's voice provoke the silent dust, Or Flatt'ry soothe the dull cold ear of Death? Perhaps in this neglected spot is laid Some heart once pregnant with celestial fire; Hands, that the rod of empire might have sway'd, Or wak'd to ecstasy the living lyre. But Knowledge to their eyes her ample page Rich with the spoils of time did ne'er unroll; Chill Penury repress'd their noble rage, And froze the genial current of the soul. Full many a gem of purest ray serene, The dark unfathom'd caves of ocean bear: Full many a flow'r is born to blush unseen, And waste its sweetness on the desert air. Some village-Hampden, that with dauntless breast The little tyrant of his fields withstood; Some mute inglorious Milton here may rest, Some Cromwell guiltless of his country's blood. Th' applause of list'ning senates to command, The threats of pain and ruin to despise, To scatter plenty o'er a smiling land, And read their hist'ry in a nation's eyes, Their lot forbade: nor circumscrib'd alone Their growing virtues, but their crimes confin'd; Forbade to wade through slaughter to a throne, And shut the gates of mercy on mankind, The struggling pangs of conscious truth to hide, To quench the blushes of ingenuous shame, Or heap the shrine of Luxury and Pride With incense kindled at the Muse's flame. Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife, Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray; Along the cool sequester'd vale of life They kept the noiseless tenor of their way. Yet ev'n these bones from insult to protect, Some frail memorial still erected nigh, With uncouth rhymes and shapeless sculpture deck'd, Implores the passing tribute of a sigh. Their name, their years, spelt by th' unletter'd muse, The place of fame and elegy supply: And many a holy text around she strews, That teach the rustic moralist to die. For who to dumb Forgetfulness a prey, This pleasing anxious being e'er resign'd, Left the warm precincts of the cheerful day, Nor cast one longing, ling'ring look behind? On some fond breast the parting soul relies, Some pious drops the closing eye requires; Ev'n from the tomb the voice of Nature cries, Ev'n in our ashes live their wonted fires. For thee, who mindful of th' unhonour'd Dead Dost in these lines their artless tale relate; If chance, by lonely contemplation led, Some kindred spirit shall inquire thy fate, Haply some hoary-headed swain may say, "Oft have we seen him at the peep of dawn Brushing with hasty steps the dews away To meet the sun upon the upland lawn. "There at the foot of yonder nodding beech That wreathes its old fantastic roots so high, His listless length at noontide would he stretch, And pore upon the brook that babbles by. "Hard by yon wood, now smiling as in scorn, Mutt'ring his wayward fancies he would rove, Now drooping, woeful wan, like one forlorn, Or craz'd with care, or cross'd in hopeless love. "One morn I miss'd him on the custom'd hill, Along the heath and near his fav'rite tree; Another came; nor yet beside the rill, Nor up the lawn, nor at the wood was he; "The next with dirges due in sad array Slow thro' the church-way path we saw him borne. Approach and read (for thou canst read) the lay, Grav'd on the stone beneath yon aged thorn." THE EPITAPH Here rests his head upon the lap of Earth A youth to Fortune and to Fame unknown. Fair Science frown'd not on his humble birth, And Melancholy mark'd him for her own. Large was his bounty, and his soul sincere, Heav'n did a recompense as largely send: He gave to Mis'ry all he had, a tear, He gain'd from Heav'n ('twas all he wish'd) a friend. No farther seek his merits to disclose, Or draw his frailties from their dread abode, (There they alike in trembling hope repose) The bosom of his Father and his God.
