FULL EPISODE The Government's Plan to DESTROY Small Business | Carol Roth | The Glenn Beck Podcast | Ep 112 America's small businesses took a massive hit in 2020. But was this because of the COVID-19 pandemic, or is the government's unprecedented response to blame? “Recovering investment banker” Carol Roth joins Glenn to break it all down, and the truth goes much deeper than we've been told. As Carol describes in her new book, “The War on Small Business: How the Government Used the Pandemic to Crush the Backbone of America,” wealth redistribution in America is already underway, as money is funneled from Main Street to Wall Street, and it's ushering in the successor to capitalism: central planning. Carol puts into layman's terms the latest on inflation, the housing crisis, social credit scores, cryptocurrency, and the Great Reset — and it's all part of a “war” on your ability to create your own wealth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bryeIT3eZyA

Doug Nordman wanted to teach his daughter about money. But he knew that to get it right, he’d have to start when she was very very small. So he did. First, he taught her how to count, then he taught her how to add, then he showed her what she could do with money by using cash in transactions. As Carol got older, she was able to handle the cash herself, learning how to make change, count change, etc. Carol started “earning” her own money, through allowance and jobs - which could only be done after her (non-paid) chores were complete.Doug’s common-sense approach to teaching his daughter about money is actually quite brilliant. She starts learning about money - and making money mistakes - when the stakes are low. Your 8-year-old making a $20 mistake is far better than your 20 year old making a $10,000 mistake because he or she never learned how to manage money.Carol joins her dad to talk about how these teachings affected her life - and how she is planning on teaching her own daughter about money and finances. Carol and Doug have combined their recollections of this time together and written a book called Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next Generation Financial Independence, and it is the blueprint for exactly how to raise children who are ‘good with money’ and how to prepare them to be adults who are great with money. If you’re struggling with how to teach your children about money, this is a must-listen episode. In This Episode We Cover:Doug's journey with moneyHow he learned to be smart about moneyHow he budgeted money on raising a childWhat does high savings rate means to himCarol's outlook about financeCarol's financial storyOverview of Carol's financial positionLean FITalking about Carol's husband and his view about moneyDoug's advice on how to approach your kids when you are just starting out on this journeyWhere they planted their moneyAnd SO much more!Links from the ShowBiggerPockets Money Facebook GroupCNBCChooseFI
What is the impact of COVID-19 on Naperville Nonprofits? On this special edition of Spotlight, host Jane Wernette is joined by five leaders of local nonprofit organizations to discuss how COVID-19 is impacting the nonprofit sector right here in Naperville. The panel represents a wide range of service areas including housing, food, employment, youth services, and mental health counseling. Representing those areas are: • Judie Caribeaux, CEO of 360 Youth Services • Mike Havala, President & CEO of Loaves & Fishes Community Services • Kim White, Executive Director of Career & Networking Center • Dr. Scott Mitchell, President & CEO of SamaraCare Counseling • Carol Simler, President & CEO of DuPagePads Illinois has been under a stay-at-home order since March 21 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, this has significantly impacted the way local nonprofits deliver their mission. In this one hour conversation, we discuss: How each organization has modified their operations to adhere to social distancing and other health measures to prevent spreading the virus. What that means in terms of delivering services to each organization’s clients. How those adjustments have impacted staff and volunteers. How is fundraising being impacted by COVID-19? The panel talks about how the community has responded to the pandemic and the additional financial pressures it is placing on nonprofit agencies. As each nonprofit has pivoted quickly to deliver their services to their clients in new ways, the financial resources needed have also increased. While large-scale fundraising events have been a backbone of many Naperville nonprofit funding models, in a time of quarantine, these events are not an option. So, many agencies are embracing digital and getting creative. What’s the path forward for Naperville nonprofits? As the conversation wraps, we look to the future and discuss what will be different for nonprofit agencies once the pandemic subsides. Panelists share their thoughts on the positive lessons learned during the quarantine that will help all of us in the nonprofit sector shape a better future. NCTV17 would like to thank Judie, Mike, Kim, Scott and Carol for joining us on this special edition of Spotlight. Collaboration among nonprofits has never been more important than it is right now. As Carol said, we need to focus on the power of “WE.” A special thanks also goes out to our sponsor, Busey Bank, for their continued support of this show and the important work of the nonprofit sector in Naperville.
Our guest during this episode is Carol Stephenson whose forty-year career has seamlessly spanned private and public sector leadership roles. Carol is a highly respected former CEO and visionary. She played a critical role in restructuring telecommunications industry in North America-and helped steer the evolution of business education in Canada, as Dean of Ivey Business School, Western University, London, Ontario. Currently, Carol serves on the Boards of several leading companies. She is a Director of General Motors Company, Maple Leaf Foods Inc. and Intact Financial Services Inc. Carol has earned significant recognition for her on-going community work and industry involvement-including her appointment into the Order of Canada. As Carol reflects on her career and experience in the corporate world, she opens her interview by sharing that she attributes success to her courage, persistence and willingness to take risks. She encourages people to reflect on the reasons why they want to join a Board, the importance of articulating their own value and how functioning effectively as a Board member becomes easier with time. Carol describes the impact of increasing numbers of women Board members and how this is shifting the nature of discussions from assertions and declarations to greater focus on curiosity, listening and understanding. Another point raised during the interview is how the so-called "soft skills" are a key differentiator among leaders, although challenging to cultivate and maintain. The interview moves from the role of Board member to that of employees presenting to the Board of Directors and the importance of demonstrating genuine executive presence. It's an opportunity for the Board to assess the person's communication skills, strategic capability, emotional intelligence and ultimately, the potential for a more senior role within the organization. Carol also emphasises that informal interactions with Board members are equally critical and provide insights about the person's character-a significant factor when making leadership succession decisions for key roles. Based on her experience, Carol offers four key tips for presenting to the Board. One, know your audience; two, there's no need to read your slides-everyone has come prepared and previewed the advance notes; three, really listen to the Board's questions before formulating a response, and four, engage the Board effectively. Always keep in mind, the Board is there to offer strategy, not tactics-spare the details in favor of what actually matters. Carol also reflects on the importance of balancing a desire for stimulation with the need for breaks. Is she planning to write a book? Listen to find out! Love the show? Let us know! Sundown is a short story inspired by the tragic murder of Carol Jenkins on September 16, 1968. A beautiful, shy, twenty-one year old black woman — Carol canvassed the small town of Martinsville, Indiana selling encyclopedias. As Carol went door-to-door, two white men stalked her, waiting for the sun to set. When it did, they cornered her alone on the sidewalk and stabbed her in the heart. Martinville was a “sundown town”, where any Black person caught there after dark would mostly likely not see the rise of the sun again. “Changing our beliefs can have a powerful impact. The growth mindset creates a powerful passion for learning. “Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better?” This is a statement from Carol Dweck, author of the bestselling book Mindset. A leading expert in the field of motivation, her research has demonstrated the role of mindsets in students’ achievement and has shown how praise for intelligence can undermine motivation and learning. So let me ask you a question right now: Do you have a fixed or a growth mindset? Your answer to this will define how you go about learning and reaching your human potential. If you’ve often struggled to improve and the act of learning is not something you enjoy, then listen in to this short summary of the first key idea in Carol’s book by OnePercentBetter: “Mindset was written by Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck. Her decades of research on achievement and success led her to discover what great parents, teachers, CEOs and athletes already know. That our mindset is the basis of accomplishment. Lesson 1: The Two Mindsets People with the fixed mindset believe intelligence can't be changed. This leads to a desire to look smart so they avoid challenges. They don't want to look bad if they fail which holds them back. In the face of obstacles they get defensive or give up easily. They say effort is pointless and believe that people are only great at things because they were born with special talents. When confronted with constructive criticism they ignore it. Lastly, they feel threatened by the success of others. People with a fixed mindset achieve less than they are capable of. On the other hand, people with the growth mindset believe intelligence can be developed. This leads to a desire to learn so instead of avoiding challenges, they embrace them. They persist in the face of obstacles and see effort as a path to mastery. They accept constructive criticism and use it to their advantage. Lastly, they feel inspired by and learn from the success of others. As a result, they fulfill their ultimate potential.” Fascinating right? Yet how often do we just assume we’re not smart enough or good enough based on the stories we’ve told ourselves all our life, vs looking at whether we have a fixed mindset that’s caused this? As Carol says in her book: "Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you? The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives." I wanted to share this as we come to the end of Season 3 which has been all about learning, because I think it’s critical to the role of learning in our lives, and more importantly, our enjoyment of it. Right now I have around seven courses - yes seven, that I have invested in or enrolled in for free through some of the online learning platforms I discussed in the previous episode How to Learn More In Less Time. Like most of us, I will often buy a course and then sit on it for months. Unlike many people I talk to though, I will dive into these when I most need them. I made a conscious effort on my business sabbatical to really make progress thought, setting myself deadlines to do them in, or simply tuning into them at the right time - i.e when I needed them most. So right now I’ve finally dived into Instagram with Intention that I bought from Hilary Rushford three months ago - because I love Instagram but don’t use it effectively for business and want to give it a damn good crack. I’ll be diving back into Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula, as I go into producing some new courses, or what I prefer to call LIVE experiences to help my community tackle areas in their business and actually DO the work like my upcoming Freedom Lab on making your first hire and building your dream team. I want to refresh my memory on some of his great tactics for interest building in the lead up to a launch. Even though I’ve done several over the years, you ALWAYS learn something new on every launch. Both of these courses are for my business growth and learning - that’s how I categorize them. I’ve been enjoying videos on The Wealthy Mindset by Tim and Kris Hallbom who concept of the Universal Cycles of Change I discussed in "When Too Much Change is Dangerous". Going through these videos (often in the evening or weekends) is for my personal growth learning, and they’re helping me look at my habits and mindset with a new pair of eyes. Along with this I’m finishing the Code of the Extraordinary Mind by Vishen Lakhiani and there’s a course that comes with it I will dive into next - part business and very much mindset and rewiring your brain - so again personal growth. I have Dr Libby’s latest book, all about eating the right food for you and knowing how to optimize your body and mind through what you consume. That for me is learning to improve my health. I wanted to give you a taster of how I learn, as I fit this into around content creation, course creation, mentoring calls, working on the property and that very important thing called everyday life! Now I want to share a few of my personal hacks for learning, in addition to those in my most recent podcast and post on on How to Learn Anything Faster. Hacks for Learning More Schedule learning into your calendar so it becomes an event you make time for and has a deadline (a recurring calendar entry is even better) Watch videos you learn from at 1.5-2 X the speed - click the settings icon or cog on most video players to speed it up. Listen to podcasts (again at 1.5 X the speed) for daily bite sized learning Learn with someone else by taking lessons together - for example my Mum and I are doing art class together, and Josh and I have been doing a Dog Essentials Training with our puppy Kayla; or Go through an online course with a friend, do a coworking session together and go through the modules at the same time and share your learnings There you have it, some hot tips for learning more faster. Interior design and feng shui are intrinsic tools to create balance and harmony in your home. When your space feels as good as it looks, your mood is lifted, you feel lighter and grace is easier to achieve. Everything just seems to work, and a slower pace sets in - like taking in a long, deep breath. I recently spoke with a marketing firm that told me feng shui and interior design were different. That essentially I needed to separate the two and be one or the other. My favorite remark, "start a hobby blog about feng shui. It will attract those who like it." It got me to thinking, are we really that far off? That acquiring sustainable harmony in our lives is only for "those" people? Carol Olmsted recently wrote that one of her feng shui colleagues was featured on their local news station for "odd jobs". As Carol so eloquently stated, "I'm entering my 18th year of Feng Shui and working with a Fortune 100 company on the interior design of 23 floors in their new headquarters, and the media is still calling Feng Shui an odd job?" I myself have been at this for fifteen years, and today's guest, Angie Cho, has been at this almost twenty years. Feng shui is so much more than weird thinking. However, many people still feel it's metaphysical or transcendental. I recently met with a design colleague, Mallory Shaw, who thought feng shui was asian aesthetic - where people have bamboo flutes, buddha fountains, and Zen decor. I think it's time that we start saying that those who refuse to fully understand it, are the weird ones! After one hour with me, Mallory was not only excited to clean out her junk drawer, she was convinced that this was a way of life - and she's right! How to improve your feng shui Today Angie and I discuss: Mindset and how to overcome it Reframing and learning to say yes How to work with your environment rather than against it How to make life richer How to create big shifts in your life How to inform your decisions through feng shui principles How to avoid a lack mentaltiy And 12 tips from the experts on how to feng shui your wallet For more info on Anjie visit her website, www.anjiecho.com, and be sure to check out her kick-ass new book, 108 Ways To Create Holistic Spaces.
