He's old, he's reactionary, he's authoritarian-curious, he hates the EU… and he's dead. Why are the main parties fixated on the demands of a zombie voter who has gone to join the Choir Eternal? And at the other end of the scale, what about “Henry” – high earner, not rich yet – the urban go-getter with an “email job” who earns six figures yet somehow finds himself strapped? Duncan Robinson who writes The Economist's Bagehot column identified both these phenomena. He joins us to debate what we do about the Walking Dead – and whether Henry deserves a helping hand or a teeny-tiny violin. Who should replace Keir Starmer? What's up and welcome back, folks. This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Eli Adams, martial artist and host of the Combat and Coaching Podcast, for a wide-ranging conversation that blends pop culture and personal insight. We kick things off with a deep dive into our mutual love for comic books, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and The Walking Dead, before shifting gears into something many grapplers can relate to—getting back to the gym after time away. Eli opens up about the anxiety and internal resistance that can come with returning to martial arts training, as well as the challenges of finding that spark again when motivation runs low. We talk about managing social exhaustion, the emotional toll of coaching, and the meaningful responsibility that comes with being a mentor. To wrap things up, we geek out over recent horror releases like Final Destination: Bloodlines and Sinners, comparing notes and sharing early impressions. Whether you're here for the mats or the movies, this one's got a little bit of everything. There have been many horror writers that have been important to the genre, but few have had the outsized impact of the one and only Chas. Balun. Whether it was his work in Fangoria, Gorezone, or his own magazine Deep Red, even if you didn't see his name at the head of the article, you knew it was him within a few sentences, by either by the tone of the writing, or maybe the films he was covering. Chas' style was humorous and more than a little confrontational, but he was always waving the flag in support of movies that he felt were important and hadn't received enough attention. Sure, they tended to be on the gory side, but for Chas. it wasn't just about the gore. Not entirely, anyway. While the three of us knew his work and the impact it had on us personally, for this very special episode, we felt we needed to talk with other folks who were just as impacted by him, and also knew him personally. In the second half of the show, you'll hear from John Szpunar, author of Xeroxferox: The Wild World of the Horror Film Fanzine and Blood Sucking Freak: The Life and Films of the Incredible Joel M. Reed; Art Ettinger, editor at Ultra Violent magazine; and finally Shawn Lewis, creator of Rotten Cotten and Eibon Press. They all share their own stories of Chas, and we all discuss the profound the impact Chas. had on us and on the horror genre in general. Don't miss this one! Films mentioned in this episode: Abomination (1988), Bad Taste (1987), The Beyond (1981), Beyond the Darkness (1979), Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Blue Velvet (1986), Braindead (1992), Bug (1975), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), City of the Walking Dead (1980), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Exorcist (1973), Friday the 13th (1980), Guinea Pig 2: The Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985), Hell of the Living Dead (1980), Last House on Dead End Street (1973), Last House on the Left (1972), Mad Ron's Prevues from Hell (1987), The Nest (1987), Night of the Demon (1980), The Omen (1976), Pieces (1982), Splatterfest Exhumed (2024), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Zoltan: Hound of Dracula (1977), Zombie (1979)

It's Bank Holiday Monday, so let's take it easy and talk about some comics. After promising it early in the show's history, Charlie's finally read the first arc of IDW's Star Trek comic by Lanzig & Kelly. Look, we're Casual Trek, this is the level of service you get from us.The first arc, “Godshock” features that classic Star Trek concept: thumbing your teeth at god, only this time it's a bad thing as someone's killing gigantic cosmic entities! Who did this and how can it be stopped? Well, Ben Sisko's back from his time as a cosmic entity to find out, with an almost all-star cast of people from throughout Star Trek History. There's Data and Dr Crusher from TNG, Paris from Voyager, Scotty from TOS and Jake Sisko is also there. Worf guest stars for long enough to be a bad parent and back door pilot for another series, and there are a couple of new characters who are a lot of fun.Join us on the USS Theseus and prepare for a lot of tangents, as we both love talking comics.References: The Super Stalag of Space, Harry 20 on the High Rock, Dan Dare, Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation Squared, Quatermass and the Pit, The Legion of Super-Heroes, The Legion Clubhouse, comic collection sizes, YES Charlie has put rolled-up Walking Dead volumes in his back pocket, the Bendis New Avengers approach to team-building, Billy Pilgrim, The Krakoan Age of X-Men, Marvel Swimsuit Specials (which are coming back), release a Star Trek Swimsuit Special you cowards!, Data pages vs data pages, Gilmore Girls spoiled Anna Karenina for me, Charlie's Super Mario Quest 2025, the Summers family tree, the Dark Horse Buffy Series, Marvel's Star Wars, Dr Who comics, the Energon Universe, the CLZ collector's app, Malibu Comics' Star Trek… Oh, and sometimes IDW's Star Trek.

In this episode it is Brian's week to choose a movie and he decides to choose one that has been haunting him for some time, even though he has never seen it! Something caught his eye and sat in the back of his head until this week when he finally made Jef and Josh watch the 1981 zombie invasion film "Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror"! At first glance it seemed to be just another run of the mill Italian zombie flick with slow ass walking dead, cheap zombie makeups and a plot that is buried deeper than most of the zombies in the film, but the casting of a single man sets this movie apart from almost all other italian zombie movies. You gotta watch it!

Frank and Thomas sit down on Challenge Accepted to unpack Episode 6, “The Price.” They cover the museum space sequence, Joel's flashback, Ellie's growing doubts, and whether seven episodes can truly deliver the season's emotional punch. Along the way they praise Pedro Pascal's layered work and debate the show's biggest changes from the game. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 | First reactions and why this feels like a return to form 01:00 | Space-museum scene and game accuracy 02:00 | Ellie's attitude shift and Bella Ramsey's range 04:00 | Joel's childhood flashback and father-son parallels 07:00 | Where is Tommy and why his absence matters 09:00 | Season length worries and missing Abby moments 10:00 | Astronaut dream, father-daughter themes, Pedro's subtle acting 12:00 | Joel's lie to Gail, Eugene's fate, and rising plot holes 15:00 | Porch conversation breakdown: “I'd do it all again” 17:00 | The show without Joel and gamer reactions 19:00 | Need for deeper Abby focus before the finale 20:00 | Pedro Pascal's career year and upcoming roles 22:00 | Listener takes, teen-parent dynamics, and Christina's view 24:00 | Joel's hidden depth and the puddle analogy 25:00 | Will Joel return in flashbacks 26:00 | Finale expectations and a Walking Dead–style drop-off risk 27:00 | Toy leaks, prequels done right, and season wrap-up hopes Key Takeaways The space-museum sequence perfectly honors the game and cements Joel's devotion to Ellie. Joel's flashback reframes his protective instincts and adds emotional weight. Seven episodes feel tight given key characters like Abby and Tommy are still underused. Pedro Pascal's nuanced performance anchors the season's biggest moments. Ellie's rebellion finally feels justified as she spots gaps in Joel's story. The finale must balance closure with setup for Season 3 to keep viewers invested. Quotes “If I had the chance to do it all again, I would do it all over again tonight.” “Just because you see a puddle doesn't mean it isn't four feet deep.” “Pedro Pascal is a generational talent and we get to be the beneficiaries.” Call to Action Like what you heard?
