Episode 151 Chapter 12, The History of Audio Recording Technology. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Playlist: THE HISTORY OF AUDIO RECORDING TECHNOLOGY Time Track Time Start Introduction –Thom Holmes 01:30 00:00 1. Leon Scott “Au Clair de la Lune” (1860). Phonautograph. One of about 50 recordings made around 1860 by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville's on his invention, the Phonautograph that were digitally restored in 2008 by the First Sounds collaborative. These were created using the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's virtual stylus technology, which sought to track the wavy lines scratched on soot-covered paper as though they were standard record grooves. 00:20 01:38 2. Alice J. Shaw, an improvised whistling performance (1888) from an Edison Records cylinder recording. 02:13 01:58 3. George J. Gaskin, “Drill Ye Terriers Drill” (1896) from an E. Berliner's Gramophone shellac disc. 01:24 04:10 4. Sousa's Band, “Happy Days In Dixie” (1897) from an E. Berliner's Gramophone shellac disc. 01:43 05:36 5. Emperor Franz Joseph, short message recorded on Valdemar Poulsen's Telegraphone (1900). Early magnetic wire recording. Recording made without microphone. 00:09 07:18 6. Sousa's Band, “The Mosquito Parade” (1904) from Columbia Records shellac disc. Note the higher fidelity of the instruments compared to earlier recordings on disc, recorded without electrical microphones but optimizing the use of acoustic horns for sound intake. 02:54 07:28 7. Noble Sissle (vocals) and Eubie Blake (piano), medley of popular songs (1923). Recording using onto an early sound film using the Phonofilm process invented by Lee de Forest. 06:51 10:22 8. Paul Whiteman And His Concert Orchestra, “Rhapsody In Blue” (1924) from an RCA Victor shellac disc. This is an acoustically recorded version of this piece, without the benefit of vacuum tube amplification or electrical microphones. Compare to the 1927 version (next), also by Whiteman, produced using electrical recording. 09:06 17:12 9. Paul Whiteman And His Concert Orchestra, “Rhapsody In Blue” (1927) from RCA Victor, His Master's Voice shellac disc. An electrical recording using vacuum tube amplification and electrical microphones. 08:59 26:30 10. Paul Hindemith, “Trickaufnahme” (excerpt) (1930), an experiment in turntablism using turntable discs to both record, mix, and playback the result. 00:58 35:28 11. BBC, “Pieces of Tape” excerpt of a program (1933) produced by editing together segments recorded previously using the Blattnerphonesteel tape recorded that used a magnetic process. This was the first audio recording assembled using tape editing. A dozen years prior to the available of magnetic tape, edits made to steel tape had to be made by spot welding. 05:29 36:28 12. Sidney Bechet, “Blues of Bechet” (1941) from an RCA Victor shellac disc. An early example of overdubbing/multitracking. Bechet played every instrument on this track, including the piano, clarinet and soprano saxophone. Each instrument was recorded onto a new master disc and mixed on another disc to create the final recording. 01:57 41:56 Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. Willard Daspit Jr. has been missing September 10, 2023. His motorcycle was found crashed near his property on Bayou Alexander Highway in the Coteau Homes neighborhood of St. Martinville. His glasses were also found at the scene, which led his wife Lara, joining us today, to believe that her husband was in need of help as he is visually impaired. He is a mechanic who likes to repair things, so it was not uncommon for his bike to malfunction and for him to walk home. He left his phone as well as his truck, validating Lara's belief that her husband did not flee the scene. CCTV footage was released showing Bill walking around town about four miles from the accident, possibly injured. Bill is 59 years-old, 5'10, 218 pounds with brown hair and peridot green eyes. Anyone with any information can contact the St. Martinville Sherrif's Office at 337-394-3071. Facebook #helpusfindbilldaspit UPDATE: Following the recording of our episode, possible human remains were discovered on December 29, 2024, in a wooded area not far off Banker Road in St. Martinville. The LSU FACES Lab as of now has not made any ID.

It was along Bayou Teche, at St. Martinville, where Evangeline, according of Henry Longfellow's classic poem, searched for her love Gabriel. The two had been separated by the Acadian expulsion from Nova Scotia. Not far away in Breaux Bridge there is a happier scene at the annual Crawfish Festival when the bounty is served. At New Iberia, Weeks Hall, a renowned artist and photographer, restored Shadows on the Teche a once rundown ante-bellum home that would become a piece of art in itself. The town is also the site of the Bayou Teche Museum, which provides a visual journey down the waterway. Michael Tarantino, a member of the museum's board, joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde and podcast producer Kelly Massicot to talk about the 125 mile long bayou, as well as the museum and the surrounding Cajun country. In a state blessed with many bayous, the Teche is one of the most historic and picturesque. Had fate allowed, It would have been a great stream for Gabriel and Evangeline to appreciate many Sunday afternoon pirogue rides.

South Louisiana Community College's ("SoLAcc") Anne Falgout, Director of Strategic Communications, and Lana Fontenot, Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement and External Relations and Executive Director of the College's Foundation, join Discover Lafayette to discuss the latest developments at SoLAcc and its recent rebranding. SoLAcc currently offers more than 50 programs, leading to associate degrees, technical diplomas, and certificates, to almost 12,000 students annually, at its campuses in Abbeville, Crowley, Franklin, Lafayette, Morgan City, New Iberia, Opelousas, St. Martinville, and Ville Platte. The College also offers a wide range of non-credit instruction and training, for careers that need certification training such as power linemen, industrial scaffolding, and commercial driving, which students can complete in under six months. Following an Academic Blueprint prepared five years in advance, SoLAcc endeavors to build educational programs that fit the needs of each community they serve. Many people in our region don't have high school diplomas, and SoLAcc steps up to offer Adult Basic Education Services, assisting individuals in passing the High School Equivalency Exam ("HiSET") which replaced the former GED exam. Students of all ages come to SoLAcc for this program, sometimes after their own children graduate from high school, and are guided by the college counselors to figure out the best way to obtain an appropriate degree while qualifying for grants, loans, and other institutional aid resources to help cover the cost of their education. SoLAcc was awarded the Hunger-Free Campus Award by the Louisiana Board of Regents in 2024. The typical age of a SoLAcc student has declined in recent years, from 27 years of age to 24 years of age today. This is a huge shift in demographics, due to the college's effective outreach program. Additionally, SoLAcc's tuition is on average about 40% less than a tradtional four-year colleges and institutions. Anne Falgout says, "The top issues that come up when we speak with prospective students is affordability and flexibility in classes as they choose which institution to attend. Affordability plus Quality equals Value!" Student Success Live is an in-person new-student orientation that all students take before registering. Guidance on resources and expectations help SoLAcc's retention rate of students. About 3/4 of the college's students are first generation college students and have no frame of reference about what to expect. Many know no one who has gone to college. SoLAcc works to help each student holistically and offers free tutoring at every campus. More than one-half of SoLAcc's students are university bound and find that first obtaining a two-year Associate's degree at the college is the most economical method to earn their credits. SoLAcc partners not only with UL-Lafayette, but also McNeese, Holy Cross, and Nicholls State to offer a 2 + 2 agreement that allows students to seamlessly transfer their credits from the community college to the universities. Lana pointed out that SoLAcc is the largest feeder of students to UL-Lafayette and its graduates start the university ready to excel. The Early College Academy, which is 'baked into SoLAcc's Devalcourt location in Lafayette," is rated in the top 1% of public high schools in Louisiana, and is particularly well-known for its students' math and reading proficiencies. The high school shares faculty with SoLAcc and the benefit of of this dual enrollment program is that students can earn their two-year Associate's Degree while earning their high school diploma. This enables the students to start at a university as a Junior. Many people attend SoLAcc after having graduated from a traditional four-year college and established in a career. As an example close to home, Lana's husband, educated to be a teacher and experienced as a fifteen-year veteran of teaching middle and high school stu...

546. We interview Robin Roberts about her new book, City of the Undead. "From its looming above-ground cemeteries to the ghosts believed to haunt its stately homes, New Orleans is a city deeply entwined with death, the undead, and the supernatural. Its location near the mouth of the Mississippi River grants it a liminal status between water and land, while its Old World architecture and lush, moss-covered oak trees lend it an eerie beauty. Complementing the city's mysterious landscape, spiritual beliefs and practices from Native American, African, African American, Caribbean, and European cultures mingle in a unique ferment of the paranormal. A long history of enslavement and oppression have also produced fertile soil for stories of the undead. Focusing on three manifestations of the supernatural in New Orleans — Voodoo, ghosts, and vampires — Robin Roberts argues that the paranormal gives voice to the voiceless, including victims of racism and oppression, thus encouraging the living not to repeat the injustices of the past. Robin Roberts attended Mount Holyoke College, where the presence of its founder's grave in the center of campus kindled her interest in the otherworldly. After receiving her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, she taught undergraduate and graduate courses with a focus on popular culture and gender. She lives in New Orleans." Sound on! From conch shells to bone flutes, humans have been making musical instruments for tens of thousands of years. What did prehistoric music sound like? In an episode originally published in November 2021, follow us on a journey to find the oldest musical instruments and combine them into one big orchestra of human history. For more information on this episode, visit natgeo.com/overheard. Want More? A conch is more than just a musical instrument. A mollusk lives in that shell, and it's a staple food in the Bahamas—so much so that overfishing is threatening their existence, but a few simple solutions may solve the problem. The oldest musical instrument was once thought to be a cave bear bone flute made by Neanderthals, but recent evidence suggests that the holes were made by animals rather than tools. Josh Butt is the Founder and Executive Producer of Audio Content Agency Ampel. In this three part series of Managing Marketing, the team at Ampel take Trinity P3 Founder and CEO Darren Woolley on a journey through the state of sound. Audio on demand has had exceptional growth between 2014-2022 with the huge success of podcasts and radio station's acceptance of audio on demand technology. Marketers have noticed -- and audio advertising, both radio and podcasts, have started to become a common part of the marketing mix. As Josh Butt and Darren Woolley discuss, audio advertising has been around for 100+ years, and jingles, audio logos and sonic identifiers have long been used to influence consumer behaviour. Everyone knows that a great song on the radio or a memorable jingle can trigger the brain to feel, remember and to transport us to a past memory. So why aren't brands leveraging this psychological trigger to build better connections and relationships with their customers? In this introduction to a 3 part series focused on audio for brands, and the people who are tasked with growing them, Ampel founder and EP Josh Butt takes Darren on the journey of creating a great brand sound - from the audio logo, to the music and sound mnemonics. Ampel creates the brand sound for Trinity P3, and extends it into the Managing Marketing podcast through an interactive demonstration. Along the way, Josh will share some favourite jingles, some audio work he wished he did, Sonic ID and sounds to surprise and delight. With thanks to Josh Butt, Michelle Lomas, Stuart Buckland, Lauren Deighton, Tania Peres, Justin McArthur, Luke Sewell, Brittany Frappell and Sez O'Neill from Ampel If you are interested in finding out more about what a professional audio channel can do for your company, visit ampel.com.au or email us at hearhere@ampel.com.au Thanks to Melod.ie for their music. This week, in St. Martinville, Louisiana, moving out of the trailer that you've made into your love nest is difficult, but with the help of family, you can get it done. The only problem is that your spurned lover may use this as a reason to go wild, and begin settling debts, with violence. He starts out at the local bar, and ends up at his Ex's parents' house, with shotgun, and a bad attitude. When all of this horrific murder finally gets to trial, it turns out that just about everyone in court is related, somehow, and a true mess takes hold!!Along the way, we find out that it's good to be the Pepper Queen, that time can't heal all wounds, and that when you murder, you're not supposed to do it in front of as many witnesses as possible!Hosted by James Pietragallo and Jimmie WhismanNew episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports! Back in February we spoke to Beth Schwartzapfel from the Marshall Project who, along ProPublica and NBC News, found horrific conditions at the Acadiana Center for Youth in St. Martinville, including teens held in solitary confinement for weeks at a time. But recently, state lawmakers took major steps to limit the use of solitary confinement for the state's youth. Beth Schwartzapfel joins us again to discuss the future of the use of solitary confinement on youth in Louisiana facilities.

Juvenile detention centers were established a hundred years ago to provide rehabilitation for minors who had committed crimes, providing support and services to help them navigate the world upon reentry. Unfortunately, many centers mirror the punitive practices of adult prisons. Reports of shackling, solitary confinement, and the denial of services and education were reported from the Acadiana Detention Center in St. Martinville, Louisiana. We speak with Beth Schwartzapfel at The Marshall Project about her joint investigation with ProPublica and NBC News into The St. Martinville Detention Center.
