For the past 30 years, Jason Herring has been up to his ears in Charlotte music: from being the founder of North Carolina record label 10mm Omega Recordings (home to rocker Benji Hughes and Brazilian jazz artist Micah Gough) to leading the avantgarde band The Mystery Plan (which recently celebrated its sixth studio release "You Also Have Eyes").
Connect with Alex: https://www.instagram.com/kahnasutra/ https://open.spotify.com/search/alex%20kahn Philadelphia-based songwriter and composer Alex Kahn has weaved a strange path through diverse musical terrain. After making fuzzed-out pop gems with indie rock outfit Jackpot, Tiger, and penning jingles for cereal commercials, Kahn eventually started to release music under his own name. While working as a writer and producer at Frisbie Studios in NYC, he collaborated with artists such as Benji Hughes and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, among others, contributing as a studio musician and co-writer. Kahn's latest release, “The Marble Jar”, combines furry guitars, spidery vocals, and dry wit to create soft, tender songs that both comfort and disturb. After the unexpected death of his father and two cross-country moves, Kahn returned home to redraw the map of an unrecognizable life. Oscillating between the bright jangle-pop of 1991 and the faint intimations of Elliott Smith, Kahn explores the raw pain of grief, the uncomfortable realities of close relationships, and the crisis of belonging. While the front half of the record leans into the comic absurdity of ordinary life, the back half plays like a string of adult lullabies about loss. Música de Johnny Hartman, The Magic Numbers, Travis, The Temper Trap y Benji Hughes.

It could be argued that Merge recording artist Benji Hughes has reached cult status with two critically acclaimed albums, a bevy of celebrity friends, collaborators and admirers and a penchant for disrobing during his live shows. He's accumulated an eclectic resume that includes working with the likes of Alice Cooper, Jeff Bridges and Burt Bacharach and has received high praise from the likes of NYTimes music critic Jon Pereles and pop culture writer Chuck Klosterman. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Meshell 's records, nine to date, have offered lyrical ruminations on race, love, sex, betrayal, God, and power, and she has simultaneously embraced and challenged listeners with her refusal to be pigeon-holed musically or personally. She has been nominated for 10 Grammys. Meshell was the first woman to be featured on the cover of Bass Player magazine. Her new album, Weather, cloaks itself in the colours of autumn, full of in-between shades and hues and with a certain mildness to it. The singer has let her feelings carry her along. Meshell has never been scared of sharing her most intimate thoughts in explicit or colourful terms that always come from the heart. As ever, she is true to herself. But Weather's folk sensibility and pregnant acoustic melodies make this a supremely accessible album. She is accompanied by Chris Bruce (guitar), Deantoni Parks (drums), Keefus Ciancia (keyboards), Gabe Noel (cello) and guests Jay Bellerose (drums) and Benji Hughes (backing vocals). www.meshell.com
