It's a return trip down the Media Path for Vicki and John and this time Bob is along for fun, games and Cowsill family lore! We welcome back Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who recently joined us to talk about their collaboration on a new album of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill, 'Long After the Fire', plus fellow founding Cowsills member, Bob Cowsill joins the conversation. We start at the dawn of Vicki's Cowsills journey, as a fan who became a friend who became a spouse. A seven-year-old, Vicki's big sister Debbi said, “You know, there's a girl your age in this band.” Vicki was instantly sold and she spent her allowance savings on the We Can Fly album. In 1977, when Vicki learned that a friend of a friend knew Bob's Cowsill, Vicki gave him a call to talk vocal harmonies. Vicki and Debbi were still bubbling under as The Bangs and they went to see The Cowsills perform at a local club. Just a few years later, Bob found himself invited to The Bangles Platinum party and John recounts his meet-cute with Vicki, right before his marriage to someone else!We test the Cowsill/Peterson crew on self-knowledge with a game we like to call 'Are You Better Informed Than Google?', Vicki and John share what took them two married decades to work together and Bob gives his perspective on John and Vicki's new album of Billy and Barry Cowsill covers.Bob and John share how their generational split affected their musical influences and experiences within the band and we hear about the earliest days of the Cowsills, their father Bud's early clash with brother Richard, performing at Brown frat parties as young kids and their first demo song recordings. And the games continue as everyone takes on some Cowsills Trivia Roulette from Becky Presley's Cowsills site!In recommendations--Fritz: Book, Miss May Does Not Exist by Carrie CourogenWeezy: Hulu Series, Devil in the FamilyPath Points of Interest:The CowsillsBecky Presley's Cowsills PageVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookBecky Presley TriviaMiss May Does Not Exist: The Live And Work Of Elaine May, Hollywood's Hidden Genius by Carrie CourogenDevil in the Family
From Lorde's triumphant return to The Doobie Brothers teaming up with Mavis Staples, May's releases signal the perfect start to summer's soundtrack."What Was That" by Lorde kicks off what many are calling a "Lorde summer," with the New Zealand artist returning to the sound that made her famous. Her stripped-down, melodic approach to examining a relationship's end showcases her unique vocal abilities without unnecessary flourishes. Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus continues her winning streak with "End of the World," an anthemic pop masterpiece with nostalgic 80s vibes reminiscent of The Go-Go's and The Bangles.Star Wars fans have reason to celebrate with two May 4th releases that demonstrate the holiday's growing cultural significance. Labyrinth's "SWMF" and Apache's remix of John Williams' iconic "Duel of the Fates" showcase how orchestral elements can blend seamlessly with electronic production – bridging centuries of musical evolution in single tracks. The mix continues with The Jonas Brothers' "Love Me to Heaven" and Turnpike Troubadours' introspective "Heaven Passing Through," which reminds us to treasure life's fleeting moments. Amine brings summer vibes with "Vacay," while legendary artists The Doobie Brothers prove they've still got it alongside Mavis Staples on "Walk This Road."For alternative music fans, The Minus Five delivers "happy rock" with "Words and Birds," Turnstile bends genres on "Never Enough," and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard experiments with orchestral sounds on "Phantom." The collection closes with Wavves' energetic Travis Barker-produced surf rock on "Goner."Whether you're planning your summer playlist, seeking graduation anthems, or simply exploring what's new in music, this diverse collection captures artists at different points in their creative journeys, all delivering tracks worthy of repeated listening. Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who are married to each other, have been making music for many years but recently released their first album together, Long After the Fire. Peterson has been singer-songwriter-guitarist for the Bangles and Continental Drifters. John Cowsill began drumming for the Cowsills at a young age, more recently was the Beach Boys' drummer and now fills in as lead singer for the Smithereens. The new album features songs written by John's two late brothers, Bill and Barry Cowsill, and John and Vicki harmonize beautifully and, as you'll hear here, crack each other up. They recount how they decided (and occasionally tangled over) who would sing what and tell great stories too, covering Vicki's long connection with the Cowsills (which dates back to 1978) and John's cosmic if heartbreaking moment with Brian Wilson. Kickstarting Your Week: A Soundtrack for a Holistic MondayBangles +Just Another Manic Monday" by The Bangles: This 80s classic perfectly captures that feeling of the work week looming after a nice weekend. It's got a catchy melody but also hints at a desire for something more than the daily grind."Monday, Monday" by The Mamas & the Papas: This sunshine pop tune, despite its title, carries a touch of melancholy. It speaks to the bittersweet feeling of Monday arriving and the weekend fading into memory.Grandpa Bill Asks:Thinking about these two very different "Monday" songs, what personal rituals or mindset shifts help you transition from the weekend energy into the weekday flow? Both songs touch on the experience of Monday, but with different vibes. What aspects of your own well-being – mental, emotional, or even physical – do you find are most affected by the arrival of a new week, and how do you nurture those areas?Grandpa Bill Asks What's Your MOOD MUSIC:

John and Paul Allen recorded this track at Sun Studios in Memphis, without me, in the spur of the moment and absolutely set the template for the album. At this stage, John and I were considering calling the project Dead Brothers!”
One of the biggest songs of the 80s that started out with almost all the right people, but needed some time for everyone to settle into the right role before it could become absolutely iconic. Alone, originally by I-Ten, covered by Heart, and by Celine Dion. Outro music is Eternal Flame, by The Bangles, which was also written by the guys from I-Ten, who are really all over this episode.

Dúirt Whitney go raibh sí ag canadh do shlua deacair. Bhí sí san ospidéal roimh an cheolchoirm ar feadh tamall le riníteas. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 15th of April, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1972: a valueable collection of books from dublin was to be auctioned in london in the next week. 1983: fianna fail was facing a european parliament inquiry on how it spent £40,000 of EEC money earlier this year. 1999- The Labour Party selected Roscrea woman Anne Keegan to contest, the local elections in the Roscrea - Templemore area. She was unanimously chosen at a convention. 2011 - After planning permission was granted,Thurles Recycling Centre was set to be located at the old Thurles Sugar Factory site in Cabragh. It left angry residents of the area appealing to an Bord Pleanala. That was David Bowie with Let's Dance – the biggest song on this day in 1983. Onto music news on this day In 1989 American all girl group The Bangles started a four-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Eternal Flame.' Also a No.1 in Australia (the biggest selling single of 1989) and the United States. 2010 After receiving some bad reviews and even enduring some boos during her performance, Whitney Houston brushed off criticism of her first show in the UK in over eleven years by insisting she was playing to a 'tough crowd'. She had recently been hospitalized with chronic rhinopharyngitis, which is a swelling of the membranes in the nose and throat. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – actor Seth Rogan was born in Canada in 1982 and actress Emma Watson was born in France in 1990 and this is some of the stuff she has done. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.
"Face Of 68" The Connecticut-born Peter Holsapple isn't hiding his age--his new album Face Of 68 proudly blares it in its title and though the 68 is representative of his current chronology, like our old friend Billy Bragg, he knows that number is a temporary thing and another waits in front of it. So, to honor this moment in his life, Holsapple's third solo album is a celebration of a year in a man's life and it couldn't sound more life-affirming. The d.B.'s frontman, whose output with that beloved outfit include classics like Stand For Decibels and Like This remain timeless classics, is one of music's busiest characters. Here's a quick and partial glance at his rock and roll resume': In the late-'80s, he was a full-time fifth member of R.E.M., He was an auxillary member of Hootie and the Blowfish for nearly 30 years, he was in the indie pop supergroup the Continental Drifters with members of The Bangles, The Dream Syndicate and The Cowsills, and he's currently playing with The Paranoid Style, the reformed d.B.'s and solo shows on his own. Holsapple's Face Of 68 is one of 2025's very best; a smoldering batch of songs that are filled with jangle, shimmer and stomp, Holsapple and his power trio of Robert Sledge of the Ben Folds Five and Rob Ladd of The Connells, play with confidence and nerve. This is a dynamic album with heavy grooves, pop hooks and melodic muscle and the fact of the matter is The Face Of 68 has never sounded better. www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) Stereo Embers: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com) IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast
Well, hello there! Hope you are doing well, growing in grace, enjoying the Lord's love, spending time with Him daily, and living a Kingdom focused life. I'm thankful you're listening today. This is episode number 207 of The Burt (Not Ernie) Show, featured on the Edifi app, iHeart radio, Spotify, Apple podcasts, and pretty much all the places. Let's jump into today's episode. The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises Devotional now available on Audible If you were, say, looking at the last week of Jesus' life, those days leading up to the crucifixion - if you were looking from the outside, those events leading would leave you with an entirely different impression than they do for us who know Jesus, who love Him and live for Him. In Him we live and move and have our being, it says in Acts 17:28. When you know that for yourself in a personal way, you look at the events between Palm Sunday and Resurrection Sunday with thankfulness, gratitude, humility, awe, and hope for what comes next. When you look at it from the outside in, it probably doesn't create those same emotions. It looks like a series of terribly unfortunate events from that perspective. Jesus' arrest, trial, crucifixion - those are gut wrenching moments in history and may be incredibly difficult to make sense out of for someone looking at the life of Jesus for the first time. The week seems like it ended in utter hopelessness, like those three and a half years of the Lord's life were all for naught. And that would be discouraging, if you only saw it from that perspective, from the outside looking in. But when you are in Christ, you look at things from a heavenly perspective. You are seated with Him in the heavenly places, is says in Ephesians 2:6, and that means we don't see things from the world's point of view. We see everything in a different light, and not like the old Bangles song from the ‘80s (yes, I am Gen X and yes, the 1980's produced a vast volume of songs, enough that there are references available for almost everything…and I wish the word of God was as easy to memorize as all those song lyrics from my teenage years were). When we only see something in part, only have access or clarity on bits and pieces of a situation, it can easily feel pretty discouraging. Let me reiterate that: when we only see in part, we can easily become discouraged. It makes sense that the last week of Jesus' life could be discouraging to someone looking at the life of Jesus from the outside. But doesn't it also make sense that you and I can also become discouraged about the things we can only see in part? And since we are not yet with the Lord, we do see in part. We don't have the whole picture. But what we do have is actually far better; we have Jesus Himself, we have the Holy Spirit indwelling us, we have the promise of heaven with Him, we are forgiven, we have access to the Father via prayer directly, at any time, because the veil was torn at Jesus death and thanks to His resurrection, death and hell are defeated for us. I say all that to remind you that when you start feeling discouraged about something, I hope you can pause and remember that just because you can't see it all with total clarity, that does not mean things are hopeless. Sunday is coming, and for the Christian, Sunday always, always comes, into every scenario and situation and problem and pitfall. Always. How can I say that and be so certain that it is true, no matter what is happening in your life? Because when you know Jesus, when your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life, in the end you get eternity with Him. And that is, for you, the joy of Resurrection morning, the empty tomb, the defeat of death for you, and eternal hope. We who know the Lord understand that Jesus accomplished the Father's will, and we know absolutely that the tomb is empty, there is no body of Jesus entombed in Israel. No grave holds Him. That tomb? It was empty 2000 years ago, it's empty right now, and it will remain empty for time and all eternity. The deed is done. The goose is cooked. Satan truly is a defeated foe, as Revelation chapter 20 so powerfully and beautifully teaches. The seeming series of unfortunate events was in actuality a series of events leading to the greatest moment to ever occur. There's nothing else like it! You and I know this to be true. So, can we also trust that God is doing His will - His good and perfect and pleasing will - on behalf of His dearly loved children, even in the areas of our lives that are painful? It takes some guts, some faith, and often some honest prayer sessions with the Lord to really believe this with every fiber of our being. And if you need to wrestle with God on a topic that's especially raw and real, please do that. Wrestle in prayer with Him. Ask Him those hard questions. Cry if you need to. But don't just cry to your small group, to your friends, to your spouse. Cry out to your ABBA Father, and be still before Him long enough to experience the love and encouragement and peace that He wants to give you right in the midst of your mess. You are not alone. He has promised never to leave you or forsake you. So please don't live like you're alone, like you've been forsaken. God is not a liar. Do not allow your stress to lead you to a place where your faith is so nonexistent, your trust so shrunken, that you are basically accusing God of being a liar to you. Remember, it is impossible fo rGod to lie, it says that in Hebrews chapter 6, verse 18. Never live in a way that accuses God of something that it is impossible for Him to do. He has not and He will not and He is not in this moment right now today lying to you. He can't and He won't. Please do not forget that! Let's look at Mark, chapter 4. Verses 24 and 25. I'm going to read from the New Living Translation. Then He added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given - and you will receive even more. To those who listen to My teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.” How are you at listening? It's not easy to be a good listener in our always on our phones day and age. It takes a whole lot more effort than it used to. But it's important to train yourself to be a good listener. In say your marriage, your parenting, at work, and all the more so when it comes to what Jesus has said via the Bible. Are you paying close attention to what He has said? Are you listening closely, so that you can understand and then be given even more? Are you listening to His teaching? Not just during a sermon once a week, but really listening when you open your Bible and read it for yourself? And are you doing that daily? If not, can you start reading your Bible every day? Not to be a legalist, because that is a dead-end road. But because you want to do what Jesus said to do here in Mark chapter 4 - reading your Bible because you want to pay close attention, to listen to Him closely, and to be given more understanding. The inverse is that what little understanding you have will be taken away from you if you don't pay close attention. That's not a good thing. And so, let's just not do things that way. As we think about Resurrection Sunday, we almost certainly think about the fact that Jesus finished His work on the cross. It is a finished work. Nothing more needs to be done or added to it. It is finished, that's what He said from the cross, and He meant what He said and said what He meant. Remember, Mark 4? We are paying close attention to what He tells us. And so, we believe that it is finished, His work on the cross. And since we believe that, we also live without trying to add to the already finished work. The work we have to do is the work of believing according to John 6:29. We can, and really I feel like we must, we must trust the Lord who paid it all to give us eternal life is the same Lord who is at work in our lives right here and now, today, completing the good work He began in us. Philippians 1:6 tells us to be confident that He will complete the good work He started in us. He is a finisher, our God is. Jesus finished it all on the cross and that sure doesn't indicate that He'll leave you flapping out in the wind, unfinished. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith, it says in Hebrews 12:2. The Author, so He started it and He is also continuing to write it out for us, day by day, and He will finish it. Anything Jesus finishes is done to perfection. That's how you need to look at your faith. Jesus authored it, He is still authoring it every single moment of every single day, and He will finish it to perfection. How do we know this is true? Because of the cross; His finished work on the cross proves that Jesus finishes everything He sets His hand to with perfection. Always. Every single time. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. Your life and times are in His hands. Those are good, good hands to be in. Jesus isn't Allstate, He doesn't raise your rates when you make a claim. You are rooted and established in Him. He's got you, and if you don't feel like you can see the end of this ordeal right now, just remember that He's got you. He has engraved you on the palms of His hands, and it is impossible for Him to forget you. See Isaiah 49:16. This Resurrection Sunday, I hope you rejoice and declare with total trust in Him that He is risen! He is risen, indeed! Lord bless you today, and every day! And may His mercy, grace and peace be yours in abundance. (And one little announcement - my devotional The Power of God's Will - 40 Days of God's Promises is available on Audible as an audiobook. I'll put that link in the show notes.) I'll see you next time. Bye bye!

Dave and Milt take listeners back to the week ending April 8, 1989, dissecting the Billboard Top 10 hits from that time. They provide insights, critiques, and contextual tidbits about each song, including highlights like 'Funky Cold Medina' by Tone Loc, 'Stand' by R.E.M., 'Like a Prayer' by Madonna, and 'The Look' by Roxette. Throughout the episode, they reminisce about personal and pop culture moments, celebrate special episodes, and interact with listener mail. The episode wraps up with the infamous Play Date quiz focusing on songs about insanity, and the hosts' substitution segment where they replace one song from the Top 10 with an underappreciated track from the same week. Chris spoke with two first-time podcast guests, Carey Wallace and Charlie Peacock, about their careers and varied experiences of pursuing creative work. They consider the role of community in creativity, what it means to be "inspired," and how they recount these observations in their recent books. They reflect on the connections between the act of surrender, spiritual disciplines, and hearing from God in the midst of various creative acts.Books Mentioned in this EpisodeIf you'd like to order any of the following books, we encourage you to do so from Hearts and Minds Books(An independent bookstore in Dallastown, PA, run by Byron and Beth Borger) The Discipline of Inspiration: The Mysterious Encounter with God at the Heart of Creativity by Carey WallaceRoots and Rhythm: A Life in Music by Charlie PeacockThe Wide, Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact, and the Fateful Final Voyage of James Cook by Hampton SidesThe New Testament in Color: A Multiethnic Bible CommentaryEternal Flame: The Authorized Biography of the Bangles by Jennifer BickerdikeThe Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero by William Kalush and Larry Sloman

Two artists who have left an indelible mark on American music are, in actual fact, a married couple with a brand new album on the verge of dropping. The Bangles' Vicki Peterson and The Cowsills' John Cowsill join us! Differences between these two abound: New England vs. Southern California origins, 60s family pop vs. 80s girl-band rock, drums vs. guitar; but the parallels are even more striking....Both Vicki and John were raised by Top 40 Radio, they began performing very young and played in extraordinarily influential bands with their siblings. And so importantly, they share the honor of touching audiences with music that became lifetime soundtracks. Their new collaborative album, 'Long After the Fire' (including the about-to-drop-on-March 21st-single, 'Is Anybody Here') features covers of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill. It was an uphill battle to acquire the rights to license the music, but thanks to Vicki's tenacity and their producer's rich industry knowledge, Vicki and John have leaned the expanse of their talent and exquisite harmonies into this very personal project.Vicki tells us about her rock stardom ride with the Bangles and John shares his early worries that having entered professional show biz at the age of seven, his career chose him and therefore the subsequent attention often felt embarrassing. We also talk about, 'Family Band: The Cowsills Story', a documentary that Weezy made about the Cowsills. We discuss John's time with the Beach Boys, Vicki's collaborations with her sister-in-law, Susan Cowsill and Vicki and John give each other the business with the well-earned nicknames, ‘Child Star' and ‘Rock Star'. Plus, we have a round of IMDB Roulette for the ages and an exclusive, in-studio performance!Path Points of InterestVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki Peterson and John Cowsill on YoutubeA Thousand Times Video Vicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiJoey's SongVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookNorman's Rare Guitars DocumentaryViet Nam: The Way That Changed America - Apple TV

For this episode we're joined in person by the delightful Siân Pattenden, author of the Agatha Bilke and Magical Peppers children's book series. We start by asking our guest about her early years as a child actor and teenage playwright before she describes the fanzines she published with her pal Nicky Fijalkowska. We hear how these helped to get her foot in the door at Smash Hits, the million-selling pop bi-weekly she joined in 1989. Quotes from classic Hits pieces she wrote are interspersed with hilarious recollections of working alongside Tom Doyle and Sylvia Patterson. From "Ver Hits" we move on to the more indie-tastic Select and Siân's part in the Britpop wars – with special attention to Elastica, Jarvis Cocker and a pulped July 1994 issue that contained her guide to "legal highs". After reminiscences of a stint teaching music writing at the London School of Journalism, Siân explains the genesis of her 1998 book How to Make It in the Music Business. Mention of a 2007 Guardian Blogs piece bemoaning the "boy-rock" template established by the Beatles leads into reflections on the all-girl Bangles, subject of a new authorised biography by two-time RBP podcast guest Jennifer Otter Bickerdike. The desperately sad passing of David Johansen prompted us to dig out and digitise a 1994 audio interview with the sometime New York Dolls frontman. We hear three clips of David talking very amusingly to Q's Mat Snow – and in the process pay tribute to the singer and his fellow Dolls. After Jasper marks the 70th anniversary of the death of Charlie Parker with quotes from the late Richard Cook's magnificent 1995 piece about the bebop genius, we pay additional tribute to jazz-funk vibraphonist Roy Ayers and neo-soul queen Angie Stone. Many thanks to special guest Siân Pattenden. Visit her website at sianpattenden.co.uk for more info on her books, art and music. Pieces discussed: En Vogue: Dawn! Maxine! Terry! Cindy!, At Home in L.A. with Paula Abdul!, This is the Future: Elastica — the Bash Street Kids, Meet the Sheatles, The Bangs: Not Just Another Girl Group, The Bangles: a Female Fab Four?, The Bangles: Globe Trotters, The Bangles: Eternal Flame, The New York Dolls' David Johansen (1994), Charlie Parker: The Prince of Wails, Roy Ayers, Angie Stone: Precious and Pure, Dancing in New York Emmylou Harris: Emmylou on the Verge and The Swede Smell of Success.

On this episode, Marc talks with Eric Shade, author of "All Over The Place - The Rise of The Bangles From The L.A. Underground," published in January of 2024. It's a super detailed, comprehensive biography of the Bangles from the childhoods of each member up to the present day, as well as a compelling depiction of the LA scene, especially the Paisley Underground, that they grew up from and are still really a part of. Eric has been a Bangles fan since he was a kid and the amount of knowledge and illustrations he has collected over the decades helped him make this a thorough book about a compelling band.As Eric writes, "The deeper I delved, a vast, interconnected network of individuals within the LA Underground unfolded. It was an enormous tapestry of impresarios, club promoters, ambitious artists, roadies, music enthusiasts, family members, and devoted friends. The Bangles were both part of this symbiosis and simultaneously stood apart from it all.”You can buy Eric's book here at Hozac's website. We hope you enjoy Marc's conversation with Eric Shade!

A lively song from a young band that shows a lot more musical maturity than you might expect, and a cover by an equally young band that knows what they're about, even if the industry isn't ready for it yet. Going Down To Liverpool, originally by The Waves (who had not yet given Katrina top billing), covered by The Bangles. Outro music is Walking On Sunshine, also by Katrina and the Waves. Let us know if it helps you figure out who's actually singing in the first song, because we're still confused.

The Voices of Russ Ballard Podcast is proud to kick off 2025 with an extra special guest, The Zombie's lead vocalist Colin Blunstone. In Part One, Ian chats to Colin about his career in the band and their continued success to this day. It's a fascinating insight into the band's image, Zombies impersonators, Elvis, recording studio secrets and how both John Lennon and George Harrison helped shape the future for them in different ways. Oh and some great music from Colin too…. "When Susanna Hoffs from The Bangles says your voice is just plain sexy, it's difficult to know how to respond!” Colin Blunstone on Susanna Hoff's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction speech for The Zombies "I was half asleep when we recorded "Tell Her No” and in the first chorus, I definitely mumbled" Colin Blunstone "Odessey and Oracle would have been a totally different album if John Lennon hadn't left his mellotron behind in the studio at Abbey Road” Colin Blunstone
What is power pop? The Who's Pete Townshend coined the term in a May 1967 interview promoting their latest single "Pictures of Lily". He said: "Power pop is what we play—what the Small Faces used to play, and the kind of pop the Beach Boys played in the days of 'Fun, Fun, Fun' which I preferred." So take one part Moptop Beatles melodies and harmonies, add in the powerful punch of The Who and The Kinks , mix in some great songs about unrequited love and voila, power pop is born. Despite the persistent pattern of great power pop bands being criminally under-loved, this hearty genre has had a long shelf life and still gets love to this day. Brent Stranathan and Jeremy Levy of the great power pop band Near Beer join to help ATTT scratch the surface of this beloved genre. Picks 10-6 are revealed in the first of many volumes of Top Ten Essential Power Pop Bands. Viva power pop!Near Beer is in your face on stage and in your earholes on your stereo. PART 1 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. Because we're readers and whatnot, this week we get literate on y'all and discuss some of our favorite rock n' roll memoirs. Our Third Lad knows a thing or two about great rock memoirs, because he just published one...singer, songwriter, guitar hero, baseball aficionado, and now author...Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate! His memoir, I Wouldn't Say It If It Wasn't True, is out now from Jawbone Press, covering his earliest days as a kid in LA falling in love with music, and down the road that took him to and through the first era of The Dream Syndicate. As a companion to the book, Fire Records simultaneously released Steve's first new solo album in 14 years, Make It Right, featuring songs that were inspired by the process of writing his memoir and reflecting on his life, from his beginnings in "Santa Monica" to present days on "Roosevelt Avenue". Steve is currently touring the eastern part of the US, with west coast and European dates to follow in early 2025, promising "a night of songs and stories" that you won't want to miss. Keep up on the latest news at https://stevewynn.net. During our conversation, we also cover: The Paisley Underground - the LA neo-psych scene that also spawned The Bangles, Three O'Clock, The Rain Parade, Green on Red, The Long Ryders! The lasting legacy of their classic 1982 debut The Days of Wine and Roses! What's in store for the out of print Dream Syndicate records Medicine Show (1984) and Ghost Stories (1988)? The 21st century return of the Dream Syndicate! Living with a drummer! (Don't worry, it's his wife Linda Pitmon, not Tommy Lee...) Little Steven's Underground Garage Cruise! Baseball! His supergroup The Baseball Project with Linda Pitmon, Scott McCaughey from Young Fresh Fellows / The Minus 5 and Mike Mills and Peter Buck from R.E.M. Also, who is Steve rooting for during the 2024 World Series? You won't want to miss this...and we wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
