Get out the Kleenex, hankies, or whatever you use to wipe away your tears: It's the last episode of this season of Shred With Shifty, a media event more consequential and profound than the finales of White Lotus and Severance combined. But there'll be some tears of joy, too, because on this episode, Chris Shiflett talks with one of country music's greatest players: Vince Gill. Gill's illustrious solo career speaks for itself, and he's played with everyone from Reba McEntire and Patty Loveless to Ricky Skaggs and Dolly Parton. He even stepped into the Eagles after Glenn Frey's death in 2017. His singing prowess is matched by his grace and precision on the fretboard, skills which are on display on the melodic solo for “One More Last Chance.” He used the same blackguard 1953 Fender Telecaster that you see in this interview to record the lead, although he might not play the solo the exact way he did back in 1992. Tune in to learn how Gill dialed his clean tone with a tip from Roy Nichols, why he loves early blackguard Telecasters and doesn't love shredders, and why you never want to be the best player during a studio session. What the Riff!?! delves once again into the great (and not so great) Christmas songs to add a little cheer as you rock around the Christmas tree this year. WSB Radio host Eric Von Haessler joins us for the fun!“The Holly and the Ivy” by Jon AndersonJon Anderson's fourth solo album came out in 1985, and was a mixture of traditional Christmas carols and original material. This is a traditional British folk Christmas carol. Though it can't be traced any further back than the 1800's, the association between holly and Christmas dates back to medieval times.“Please Come Home for Christmas” by the EaglesDon Henley, Glenn Frey, and the rest of the Eagles put out this popular sad Christmas track in 1978, though it was a cover originally performed by blues pianist Charles Brown in 1960, and co-written by Brown and Gene Redd.“The First Noel” by Crash Test DummiesFront man Brad Roberts puts his distinctive bass voice to work on this traditional Christmas tune. This carol originated in Cornwall, England and dates back to at least the early 1800's, using the French "Noel" as a synonym for the Christmas season“The 12 Days of Christmas” by Straight, No ChaserThis acapella group from Indiana University puts some comedic musicianship to work on this Christmas round. We know you'll like it, sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus from the Serengeti. “Nut Rocker” by Emerson, Lake & PalmerELP puts a prog rock spin on the classic Nutcracker Suite. Russian composer Tchaikovsky wrote the original Nutcracker as a two-act ballet in 1892, and is a fantasy taking place at the foot of a Christmas tree.“Christmas All Over Again” by Tom Petty and the HeartbreakersThis original song was penned by Tom Petty on a ukulele in 1992. It was used in the motion picture "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York," and also appeared in "Jingle All the Way." Jeff Lynne co-produced the song, played bells, bass, timpani, sang background vocals, and wishes for a Chuck Berry Songbook in the song.“The Christmas Song” by WeezerThis is not the one you're familiar with. The more famous "The Christmas Song" was first performed by the Nat King Cole trio in 1946. Weezer did this introspective original song with the same name in 2000 on a fan club Christmas LP.“Minnie and Santa” by Cyndi LauperLauper released this light hearted Christmas song in 1998 which tells of a fling that Minnie (not the mouse!) had with old Kris Kringle. This may sound like a cover of a classic song, but it is an original written by Lauper and Jan Pulsford.“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Frank SinatraYou can't go wrong with Old Blue Eyes and a crooner Christmas classic. This song originated in 1943 and was in the musical "Meet Me in St. Louis," where it was sung by Judy Garland.“God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen/We Three Kings” by Barenaked LadiesThis Christmas medley also features fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Sara McLachlan joining in with the Barenaked Ladies.“Listen, The Snow is Falling” by Yoko Ono & the Plastic Ono BandHear us out - this is an Ono piece that is actually quite good! It was released in 1971 as the B-side to the better known "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," sung by John Lennon.“If It Doesn't Snow On Christmas” by Joe PesciChasing Macaulay Culkin isn't the only association Pesci has with Christmas. He put this cover of an old Gene Autry song out on his 1998 album "Vincent LaGuardia Gambini Sings Just for You."(and there might be a bonus ending related to the Beatles...)We at What the Riff?!? wish every one a blessed and Merry Christmas! If you're looking for great Heartland Rock, a great choice would be the album Against the Wind. Depending on how you count it, it could be considered Bob Seger's eleventh studio album, but it is the third album of the iteration known as Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band. Seger is joined by Drew Abbott on guitar, Chris Campbell on bass, and David Teegarden on drums. The band became the Silver Bullet Band a bit by accident. They were arguing about what to call themselves, and the manager got tired of it. When they got paid the manager wrote the name "Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band" on the paycheck and the name stuck. Against the Wind was an immediate success. It went to number 2 on the Billboard 200 charts in its third week, and it sat there for 5 weeks, kepts out of the top slot by Pink Floyd's monster hit album, "The Wall." Finally, it topped "The Wall" to take the number 1 slot and remained there for six weeks, making it Bob Seger's most successful album in his career. There are a number of well known hits on this album, and an excellent collection of musicians as well. In addition to the Silver Bullet Band, Seger makes use of session musicians out of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, and is joined by backing vocals from members of the Eagles as well.Seger retired at the end of 2019, but he performed in 2023 at Patty Loveless's induction in to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, so we hold out hope that there will be some occasional performances still to come.Bruce presents this folksy heartland singer songwriter for this week's podcast.. Her StrutWhile not released as a single, this song received some airplau as the B-side to "The Horizontal Bop." Seger has been criticized for his adolescent humor in this song, but he claims that the inspiration for it was feminist activist Jane Fonda and her appearance before the Campaign for Economic Democracies.Against the WindBob Seger has written a number of songs about looking back on life, and the title track is an example of this. Seger was a cross country runner in high school, and he uses running as a metaphor for growing old. This song went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and he is joined by his friend and Eagles alumnus Glenn Frey for backing vocals.Fire LakeThis track is about taking risks, risking love, and just heading off with a bunch of wild people. Seger recorded this one at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. If the backing vocals sounds a lot like the Eagles, there is a reason for it - those backing vocalists are Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit. You'll Accomp'ny MeThis ballad is a little more country, with lyrics that basically say, "look, you may be playing the field now, but we both know in the end we'll be together." Little Feat co-founder Bill Payne joins Seger on this track to provide organ, synth, and piano parts. It hit number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sleepless Nights by Gram Parsons (from the motion picture "Cruising")Al Pacino starred in this crime thriller about a serial killer targeting gay men. STAFF PICKS:I Like to Rock by April WineWayne rocks out to start the staff picks with this Canadian band. April Wine formed in 1969, and have released over 20 albums. This song may be time stamped in the early 80's but it rocks out, and you can't beat lyrics like, "journey to the stars, Rock N Roll guitars!" Take the Long Way Home by SupertrampRob brings us one of the hits off Supertramp's multi-platinum album, "Breakfast in America." The lyrics to this one depict a couple growing apart as the husband starts staying away from home due to feeling like he's being ignored. It can also be a reflection of missed opportunities to live in alignment with your heart, and not being at peace with yourself.Rock With You by Michael JacksonLynch features a hit from MJ's disco album, "Off the Wall." Original lyrics were a bit more suggestive, but these were toned down to fit Jackson's wholesome image at the time. Rod Temperton wrote "Rock with You" as his first song for Jackson, setting the stage for more collaborations, including the iconic "Thriller." I Wanna Be Your Lover by PrinceBruce's staff pick is the lead single from Prince's self-titled second album, and his first major hit, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1980. Prince performs lead and backing vocals, and plays all instruments on this hit. The end of the track includes an extended instrumental jam which is edited out for the single. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Give It All You Got by Chuck Mangioni Flugelhorn player Mangioni wrote this song for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Stories connect you to others, because the stories you tell reveal things about you. Those stories let people get to know what you like, believe and value. VINCE GILL The way he tells stories is why so many people love country icon Vince Gill. He is so open and transparent with his stories you just feel like you're best friends 5 minutes after meeting him. Vince released his first album in 1985, but really broke through in 1989 when he signed with MCA Nashville. When he released Gun Slinger in 2011, he invited a group of us to his house to listen to the album. His house is pretty amazing. He lives in one of those renovated homes built a hundred years ago. THE RECORDING STUDIO At the front corner of Vince's house is a recording studio. Imagine a large family room. You enter the studio down a couple steps in the middle of the long wall. To your left surrounding the exterior of the room is his amazing guitar collection. Under the countertop that rings the three walls to the left are about half a dozen drawers. Each holds two guitars. Hung on the walls above the counters are more guitars as if you were in a music store. There had to be a few hundred guitars in that room. Vince told us most of his collection was in storage with his touring gear. In the middle of that left half of the room sat the large mixing console facing the far wall with a small recording booth through the door in the close corner. The right side of the room looked like a warm den. There were oversized chairs, a nice couch, a few end tables and a fireplace. I imagined a lot of songwriting was done in that room. On wall straight across from the entry stairs was the bookshelf holding his various Grammy Awards, CMA Awards, and other accolades. The Grammys and other awards his wife Amy Grant won were on the shelves as well. THE STORIES Above the fireplace hung a destroyed vintage guitar. I asked Vince about the story behind that guitar. He said when the floods of 2010 hit Nashville, the storage facility most of the big country artists used for much of the gear was under water. All of the gear in that huge warehouse was destroyed, including many of Vince's prized guitars. The guitar that hung on the wall was one of the oldest that Vince had in his collection. He salvaged it from the flood and hung it on the wall as a reminder of how precious time is for all of us. As we made ourselves comfortable in the studio, Vince had his producer cue up the new album. He would then proceed to tell us a story about how a song was recorded or about the inspiration behind a song. Then he would play it for us. It was amazing. BREAD AND WATER One song on Guitar Slinger held a very special place for Vince. He told us "Bread and Water" is loosely based on his brother who had a rough stretch of life. Vince's brother was in a car accident and almost killed when he was just 21. He never fully recovered. As he told the story of his brother, Vince said his brother would kind of hobo around. He would often spend time at the mission. Vince then plays the song for us. The opening stanza of "Bread and Water" goes like this: One night he wandered into that old mission The one out on the poor side of town He really had no interest in salvation Just a place to lay his drunk ole body down Vince got a little choked up when he told the story of his brother as he introduced the song. Once he played it, the song took on such a different and more powerful meaning for all of us in that studio. Check it out on YouTube. You'll see what I mean. INTERESTING STORIES After about four songs, Vince says, "Are you guys enjoying this or are you just getting bored with my old stories?" Each and every one of us emphatically chimed in that we wanted more stories. I could have sat there for a week and listened to Vince tell stories. It was truly one of the highlights of my career. When the Eagles recently came to town, I went to see this tour, because Vince was playing guitar and singing the parts left vacant with the passing of Glenn Frey. It was so great. I have seen Vince Gill play probably half a dozen times at various events. I've met him twice. He has always told great stories, and everybody loves him. His stories make you feel like you've been best friends for years. That's what stories can do for you. When you tell stories, you build relationships. You create an identity and personality. The Outlaws had a long history as a band prior to the release of this debut album. Formed originally in 1967 in Tampa, Florida, the original name for the group was "The Four Letter Words." They toured off and on through the early 70's, and made an aborted attempt at an album the late 60's. Finally, they were signed by Clive Davis and Arista Records while opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ronnie Van Zant told Davis and future Outlaws manager Charlie Brusco, "If you don't sign Outlaws, you're the dumbest music person I've ever met - and I know you're not."The debut and eponymously named album Outlaws would blend Southern rock with Country and hard rock, and would create a great concert draw for the band. Their use of three guitars would come to be known as "the Florida Guitar Army." Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones both provided lead guitar and vocals, and Henry Paul would provide further electric and acoustic guitar as well as vocals. Monte Yoho on drums and Frank O'Keefe on bass would round out the group. While there's definitely a Southern Rock feel to the Outlaws, there is also a lot of Country and even bluegrass mixed in. The technical chops are impressive, and there is a lot of harmony employed in the group as well. The album would peak at number 13 on the Billboard Top LP's & Tape chart.Wayne takes us through this guitar-driven Southern Rock album for this week's podcast. WaterholeThis instrumental song leads off side two of the album, and has a bluegrass feel. It is the opening track to side two of the album. There Goes Another Love SongThe hit single on the album also is the leading track. It peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, and features Hughie Thomasson on lead vocals. The lyrics depict a guy on the road who is missing his faraway love, and seems to encounter love songs one after another.Song for YouThis may appear to be an instrumental at first because of the long intro before the vocals come in. The lyrics reflect a guy who is breaking a girl's heart, but can't seem to avoid doing so. There are some great harmonies in this track.Green Grass and High TidesThe last song on the album is a true epic. The album version is almost 10 minutes long, but has been stretched to 30-minute versions in concert jams. Hughie Thomasson conceived the album while at a beach cookout and imagining all the rock greats who had passed on rising from the grave to play a show. The name comes from a Rolling Stones' "Best of" album title. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “The Apple Dumpling Gang”Walt Disney Productions put out this comedy western about a gambler tricked into taking care of a group of orphans. Bill Bixby, Don Knotts, and Tim Conway star in this movie. STAFF PICKS:One of These Nights by the EaglesLynch starts off the staff picks with a song penned by the duo of Glenn Frey and Don Henley. It became the second number 1 single for the group in the US, behind "Best of My Love." This track takes inspiration from soul music like Al Green and B.B. King, and has been described as an anthem for procrastinators and dreamers. Blue Sky by Joan BaezRob profiles a cover song originally performed by the Allman Brothers on their 1972 album, "Eat a Peach." Originally written by Dickey Betts about his girlfriend Sandy "Bluesky" Wabegijig, Baez covers this on her 1975 album "Diamonds & Rust." If it sounds familiar to you, Baez is actually backed up by the Allman Brothers Band for this single.Landslide by Fleetwood MacBruce features a song written by Stevie Nicks at a time when she was considering whether to continue to pursue life as a musician or give up her dream and go back to school. Despite its popularity today, the song was not originally released as a single until the live version from "The Dance" in 1997.Motorhead by HawkwindWayne closes out the staff picks with a B-side from the prog rock group Hawkwind written by bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister while he was with the group. Lemmy was fired from the band one day before the album's release, but would go on to fame in the band Motorhead. What makes a band awesome is harmony, it is also the key to a band's longevity. But, this the ingredient that only the Eagles half way. The members of Eagles were four multi-talented, creative musical geniuses, but none of them could get along with the founding member Don Henley. The group created six studio albums, each did better than the last. But, success isn't enough to keep a group together. The band's manager released a greatest hits without the band's consent, and this compilation is still selling copies. In fact, Eagles 1971 to 1975 has outsold Michael's Thriller selling 38 million copies! Hotel California, equally is one of the highest selling albums in American history selling 26 million copies! And the single has sold over 3 million copies. The Eagles were riding high, but something bad was brewing inside Glenn Frey and one night at a benefit show in 1980 for a US Senator, angers flared and Mr Glenn erupted. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/strickland-media-group-in/message

*) Gaza's Nasser Hospital ‘has become a place of death' — UN An official from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, expressed concern over the state of the Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Younis in the south of besieged Gaza. Jonathan Whittall, senior humanitarian affairs officer at OCHA in the occupied Palestinian territory, said: “The conditions are appalling. There are dead bodies in the corridors. Patients are in a desperate situation.” He also added that the hospital “has become a place of death, not a place of healing.” *) UN official says ‘there needs to be an explanation on how the veto is used' Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the five countries that hold the veto power at the UN Security Council “have a great amount of responsibility, and there needs to be an explanation on how the veto is used.” The spokesperson's comments came after the Security Council failed to adopt a resolution on a humanitarian ceasefire in besieged Gaza for the third time. *) Russia rejects US claims of nuclear space threat Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared that Moscow has no intention of deploying nuclear weapons in space and that his country has only developed space capabilities similar to those of the US. Putin's statement followed the White House confirmation last week that Russia obtained a “troubling” anti-satellite weapon capability, although such a weapon is not operational yet. *) Pakistan parties reach power-sharing agreement, Khan loyalists left out Two Pakistan parties have reached a power-sharing agreement that will return Shehbaz Sharif to the premiership, leaving out politicians loyal to jailed former leader Imran Khan despite winning the most seats in this month's vote. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan Peoples Party said they had settled days of negotiations on securing a majority to form a coalition government that will also include several smaller parties. Under the deal, the PML-N and PPP will put forward former leader Sharif as prime minister and Asif Ali Zardari, the husband of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, as president. And finally… *) Eagles' iconic ‘Hotel California' lyrics at centre of rare manuscript trial In the mid-1970s, the Eagles were working on a spooky, cryptic new song. On a lined yellow pad, Don Henley, with input from band co-founder Glenn Frey, jotted thoughts about “a dark desert highway” and “a lovely place” with a luxurious surface and ominous undertones. The song, “Hotel California”, became one of rock's most indelible singles. And nearly a half-century later, those handwritten pages of lyrics-in-the-making have become the centre of an unusual criminal trial set to open on Wednesday.
A year ago, I began what will unfortunately be a regular series of these programs from now on…it's an annual look back on the musicians we lost in the previous year… Rock star deaths have been on our mind since late 2015 when Scott Weiland of the Stone Temple Pilots died, followed a few weeks later by Lemmy of Motorhead…then the floodgates opened in 2016: Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey of the eagles, both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake from Emerson Lake and Palmer, and George Michael—just to name a few… And since then, it seems we hear about a rock star death every couple of weeks…Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Gregg Allman, Walter Becker of Steely Dan, Chuck Mosley of Faith No More, Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode, Mark E. Smith of The Fall, Charlie Watts The Rolling Stones…it's been a lot to take in… Some of these deaths have been of natural causes, disease, and old age…others have involved drugs, alcohol, years of hard living, misadventure, and suicide… Here's the hard truth: rock has been around for about seventy years…many of the people who have provided us with our favourite music and some of the greatest songs of all time are reaching the end of their lives… No one is getting any younger...and over the next decade, we're going to lose some of the personalities who have always been with there for us over the last 30, 40, 50, or even 60 years... With that grim reality in mind, I think we need to continue with an annual retrospective at those whom we've lost in the last 12 months…they may be gone, but we need to recognize and celebrate their contributions to the world of music...this is 2023 in memoriam... SUMMARY:Songwriters Hall of Famer JD Souther joins Scott and Paul for an in-depth interview to kick off the New Year! PART ONE:Paul and Scott welcome two very special guests (ages 8 and 5) to help set the tone for the new year. Plus they reveal the clever message a listener sent in to win the Stax Christmas LP from the last episode. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with JD SoutherABOUT JD SOUTHER:JD Souther is perhaps best known for writing or co-writing ten songs recorded by the Eagles, including “Victim of Love,” “The Sad Café,” “How Long,” and the #1 hits “Best of My Love,” “New Kid in Town,” and “Heartache Tonight.” Another ten of his songs were recorded by Linda Ronstadt, among them “Faithless Love,” “Prisoner in Disguise,” and “Simple Man, Simple Dream.” The list of other artists who have drawn from the JD Souther songbook includes Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, Conway Twitty, Glen Campbell, George Strait, Trisha Yearwood, Tom Jones, Roy Orbison, Raul Malo, Michael Buble, India.Arie, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Additionally, JD co-wrote three songs with Don Henley on his End of the Innoncence album, including “Heart of the Matter,” and found success with the Dixie Chicks' cover of his “I'll Take Care of You.” As an artist, JD launched his career with the group Longbranch / Pennywhistle, which he founded with future Eagle Glenn Frey. Soon after, he co-founded the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band with Chris Hillman of The Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield and Poco. In total, JD has released seven solo studio albums between 1972 and 2015, and landed two Top 10 hits as a recording artist with “You're Only Lonely” and the James Taylor duet “Her Town Too.” Souther was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.
Linda Ronstadt's fifth solo studio album would be her breakout one. Heart Like a Wheel is a folk/country/rock mixture of covers and originals, and was the last album Ronstadt released on the Capitol Records label after she had moved to Asylum records. It would reach the top of the Billboard 200, spend 51 weeks on the chart, and fuel Ronstadt's rise to the first "arena class" female rock star.Linda Maria Ronstadt is the third of four children born to a family of Mexican and German descent and a long history in Arizona. Her professional start is considered to be the folk rock trio called the Stone Poneys, who had a hit in 1968 with the song "Different Drum." Ronstadt is famous for touring in the early 70's with a backing band that included Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner - artists who would go on to form the Eagles. Her four earlier albums produced only moderate success before her fortune turned dramatically upward with "Heart Like a Wheel."While Ronstadt's style is often referred to as country rock, she called it "Mexican bluegrass" in 1968. Over time she would record songs in a variety of styles from rock to folk and country, including some Spanish language songs and even rock songs reimagined as lullabies. Her ability to cross genres contributed both to her success and her share of criticism from those expecting something different. Success did not always agree with her, as she felt she was encouraged to project a tough rock image that did not accurately reflect her true self. Linda Ronstadt was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, shortly after her retirement from music in 2011.Bruce presents this breakthrough country rock album in this week's podcast. I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)This cover was originally written and recorded by Hank Williams back in 1951. It went to number 2 on the Billboard country singles chart back then. A bunch of people have covered this song, but Ronstadt's cover is the most successful, going to number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and winning her a Grammy in 1976 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. You're No GoodThe first single released from the album went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is a cover of a song written by Clint Ballard Jr. and first performed by Dee Dee Warwick in 1963. The success of this "glad to be broken up" song would set the template for Ronstadt over the next five years of doing remakes of classic rock and roll songs.Faithless LoveAn original recording rather than a cover, this deeper cut was written by J.D. Souther, who wrote or co-wrote songs for both Ronstadt and the Eagles. It would hit number 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart when Glen Campbell covered it in 1984. Willin'This song was first performed by Little Feat and was written by their front man, Lowell George. Ronstadt's cover was used in James Cameron's film "The Abyss" in 1989. Lowell wrote this song while he was a member of the Mothers of Invention. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Dance of the Reed Flutes (from the nature documentary "Animals Are Beautiful People")In addition to its frequent use in the Christmas ballet "The Nutcracker," this piece was also used in the nature documentary STAFF PICKS:Whatever Gets You Through the Night by John LennonLynch kicks off the staff picks with a song originally inspired by Lennon's habit of late night channel surfing. He caught the phrase from Reverend Ike, an evangelist on TV, and turned it into this song. It went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lennon got Elton John to provide the vocal duet for this song, and in return Lennon appeared onstage with John during his Thanksgiving concert at Madison Square Garden - one of his last major live appearances.I Can Help by Billy SwanWayne brings us a song we all thought was performed by Ringo Starr. Billy Swan was better known as a country songwriter than a solo artist, but this single would be his sole number 1 hit. It is a particularly positive song, with a nice reprise at the end of the album cut.Must of Got Lost by the J. Geils Band Rob features an early hit from the J. Geils Band, reaching number 12 on the charts. It has a funky hook, and a grammatically incorrect title, with lyrics that explore why a relationship went wrong.Wishing You Were Here by ChicagoBruce closes out the staff picks with a song off the Chicago VI album. Chicago gets some assistance from the Beach Boys, who contribute to the backing vocals on this song about missing the one you love while on the road with a touring band. COMEDY TRACK:Wildwood Weed by Jim StaffordWe finish off with a story in song about that whacky tobackey in a country setting
Within a year after getting his first guitar donated by his sister's boyfriend, Jimmy Gilmer of Sugar Shack fame, Jim Parker was playing in a band and later became a founding member of The Illusions that landed a record deal with Dot Records. In 1966 he and his buddies decided to leave their hometown of Amarillo, Texas, and head to Los Angeles. During that time, The Illusions became “The Kitchen Cinq” recording with Lee Hazelwood's LHI label for three years. This later led to jobs with other recording bands like Armageddon and THEM (post Van Morrison) with some studio work with Sonny and Cher and various recording artists on the side. Fifty years later, on August 28, 2015, AceRecords of the UK and its affiliate US label Light in the Attic Records released “The Kitchen Cinq, When the Rainbow Disappears”, as an anthology complete with a booklet of photos and history of the band.Moving to Nashville in 1975 was the beginning of another serendipitous phase of Jim's career where he met a young John Anderson and began writing successful chart songs. Then Jim branched out and has co-written with many #1, Hall of Fame and Grammy winning songwriters over the years and continues to do so today. Jim is the creator and host of a popular series at the Von Braun Center Playhouse in Huntsville, AL since 2005 called Jim Parker's Songwriters Series ® where he showcases the incredible talent of his hit songwriter friends from Nashville, Muscle Shoals, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Canada and surrounding areas. Mezzanine talk before the Today Game with Ethan Hawke, Emma Stone, Glenn Frey and MORE as candidates
You may recall that a few weeks ago, I played a couple of interviews with the great Vinny Ciesielski. He's a wonderful person and has been a mainstay for years in the Nashville music scene. Welcome to Part 2 of my interview with Vinnie Ciesielski! Before I say anything else, let me point out that the link I share to access the show notes during the episode is incorrect. The show notes for this episode are https://trumpetdynamics.com/trumpetvinnie2. I believe I left out the number 2 during the interview because I initially planned to have this be one giant episode, but wisely chose to break it into two parts. And what a part this is. Vinnie and I dove deep into the "why" of playing trumpet. The "How" tends to be rather superficial, which is why I don't have much interest in podcasts like that. But the "why" is what gets me excited, and Vinnie surely did not disappoint with his insightful comments in this one.Enjoy! What you'll hear in this episode:-More in-depth dialogue on the "good day and great day" concept...05:05-The need for healthy lifestyle for success on trumpet and overall quality of life...08:30-Self-loathing equates to loathing your environment...13:30-Why and how Vinnie has played with a rare condition that causes loss of feeling on the left side of his body...17:20-If you can feel your face, you're ahead of the game!...25:00-Shame is a wasted emotion...32:00-Keeping things real regarding the importance of trumpet...36:00-Adapting to radically changed physicality, and thoughtfully losing weight so it stays off...43:30-Music a salve for tremendous joy and intense loss...53:45-Are we "called" to trumpet?...58:45-A father's offhand comment while watching TV proves prophetic...01:03:30-Plus whatever your discerning ears deem worthy of your time and interest...Resources mentioned:Vinnie's websiteMy Fitness Pal appTrumpet Dynamics podcast with Beth PeroutkaAbout the Guest:Attending Towson University in Maryland, Vinnie Ciesielski majored in music performance on trumpet, which he has played professionally for over 50 years.Since coming to Nashville in 1992, Vinnie has played on thousands of recordings with artists such as Lyle Lovett, Travis Tritt, Tracy Byrd, Smokey Norful, Tanya Tucker, Glenn Frey, T.D.
