Episode 673: John Davis of The Folk Implosion

Beginnings

On today's episode, I talk to musician John Davis. Growing up in Cambridge, MA, John formed The Folk Implosion with Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr.'s Lou Barlow in the early 1990s. Their first album 1994's Take a Look Inside was a brilliant lo-fi pop record, and then a year later, a song of theirs on the Kids soundtrack blew up, and in the diverse atmosphere that had been created in Nirvana's wake, the band was noticed by a number of larger labels. Their third album would be released by Interscope, after which John left the band. As a solo artist, John has released many albums under different names on labels like Shrimper, and just last year, Lou and he got back together to make a new Folk Implosion album. Walk Thru Me was released on Joyful Noise last June, and it is quite wonderful! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. Fellow music lovers, you are in for a treat, because for this episode we are diving head-first into a full-on rock concert of epic proportions. Join us for the 13th annual SMooCH benefit show at The Showbox in Seattle, where our community, this year alone, has raised over $2.2 million dollars for Uncompensated Care at Seattle Children's Hospital. We've mentioned SMooCH before on the Nordy Pod way back in episode 3 with Megan Jasper, and again in episode 29 with Dr. Jeff Sperring, but we've never actually taken you to the show itself. If you're new to the Nordy Pod; SMooCH, which stands for Seattle Musicians for Children's Hospital, is an event that was started by Pete Nordstrom and his wife, Brandy, in 2012 after their own experience needing the care of Seattle Children's Hospital. In this episode you'll learn more about the Uncompensated Care program from return Nordy Pod guest, CEO of Seattle Children's Hospital, Dr. Jeff Sperring, you'll hear from one of the many patient families that have been directly impacted by the support of the Uncompensated Care fund, and you'll hear from Megan Jasper, CEO of Sub-Pop Records, who talks about what it takes to pull together a mind-blowing rock concert like SMooCH. On top of all that you'll get to hear from a few of the incredible musicians that agreed to come play the event this year. Since the very first show SMooCH has consistently managed to bring iconic artists to the Showbox, like Macklemore, Modest Mouse, Ben Gibbard, Iron and Wine, The New Pornographers, The Head and the Heart, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Phantogram, and so many more. This year's event is no different. Prepare yourself for this all-star lineup featuring Doug Martsch from Built to Spill, Sebadoh, Duff McKagen, of Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver, and the headliner, Nude Dragons, which are the reunited members from Soundgarden. We're very grateful to all of the musicians who showed up to donate their time and talents, we're grateful for those who helped organize the event, and we're super proud of our community that has donated to date over $30 million dollars to the Uncompensated Care fund. Thanks for tuning in to episode 77. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? This show isn't just a one-way conversation. Having met J Mascis back in highschool, the two set out to form their very own hardcore band, Deep Wound, after being inspired and influenced by the growing Punk/HC scene in their area. They would soon connect with Murph and the trio would establish Dinosaur in the mid 80s before renamaing the band to Dinosaur Jr. for the release one fo the most important records of all time, their 1987 classic, "You're Living All Over Me" on SST Records. Barlow soon parted ways with the band to start the incredibly prolific Sebadoh and for the past 3 decades he has created an amazing body of work that has influenced bands and artists all over the world. Talkhouse Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2024 57:03

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two incredible singer-songwriters who sprung from the same fertile late '80s/early '90s scene, and who are still doing it right all these years later: Joe Pernice and Bill Janovitz. Joe Pernice first found notice in the country-ish pop band Scud Mountain Boys, whose home-recorded songs landed them a deal with Sub Pop in the mid-1990s. The Scuds weren't around super long, but their end was the beginning of the Pernice Brothers, Joe's long-running band that continues to put out excellent, often melancholy songs. The latest Pernice Brothers album—and by the way, he's really the only constant member at this point—is called Who Will You Believe, and it stands up there with his incredibly durable catalog. In addition to writing and playing songs, Pernice wrote a great novel a while back called It Feels So Good When I Stop, and he even had a short stint writing for TV. But for now, he's concentrating on music. Check out “December in Her Eyes” from Who Will You Believe. The other half of today's conversation, Bill Janovitz, has been the singer and guitar player for the band Buffalo Tom since their inception back in 1986, and while there have been quieter periods in there, they've consistently released records, including the new Jump Rope, which comes out on May 31. Buffalo Tom came out of the same incredible Boston/Amherst music scene that birthed Pernice Brothers, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and many more, and these guys dive right into reminiscing about those fertile days. In addition to making music, Janovitz is also something of a rock historian, having written the comprehensive Leon Russell book in recent years, as well as a volume on The Rolling Stones. His next book is about The Cars, which these guys talk about during this chat as well. Check out “Helmet” from the upcoming album Jump Rope right here. Like I said, these guys dive back into the Boston days, talking about mutual friends and collaborators like J Mascis and David Berman of Silver Jews. They also try to remember their first encounters, one of which involves Pernice being a little ornery, and they talk about selecting songs for records—and how they never know which ones people are going to react to. Enjoy. 0:00 - Intro 2:46 - Start of the chat 7:37 - Joe's legendary cousin 12:15 - Joe walks out of college and has "a mild nervous breakdown" 18:20 - "When did you meet [David] Berman?" 23:58 - "My first album was made for $60." 31:01 - Berman wants to hear Joe say the word "cocksucker." 42:12 - Craft versus hack, and writing for TV and film Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Joe Pernice and Bill Janovitz for chatting. In this episode, David & I discuss: The manifold ways in which Metal Machine Music can be used as a weapon;   Why having a propensity for substance abuse lends itself to having the skill set one may require to fully immerse within the depths of Lou's work; And the f*cking sonic seagulls!    True to the original, Discograffiti creator/host Dave Gebroe's tribute compilation Metal Machine Muzak features four long-form tracks, each clocking in at 16 minutes and 1 second, by four indie-rock visionaries: LOU BARLOW (Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh), CORY HANSON (Wand), W. CULLEN HART (The Olivia Tremor Control) and MARK ROBINSON (Unrest).   METAL MACHINE MUZAK will be available in two different configurations: digital-only or double vinyl plus digital.  The double-LP gatefold configuration will be pressed on 180-gram metallic silver vinyl, and is limited to an exclusive numbered run of 300 copies, only 90 of which will be available for purchase online.  METAL MACHINE MUZAK was curated and released by Dave Gebroe, creator and host of the music obsessive's podcast, Discograffiti. Both are available online ONLY on The Discograffiti Podcast's Patreon Record Shop. They will not be on streaming. “Metal Machine Muzak” is a reimagining of Lou Reed's infamous Metal Machine Music album, curated and released by Dave Gebroe, creator and host of the Discograffiti podcast.    Dave and “Metal Machine Muzak” contributor Lou Barlow (Folk Implosion, Sebadoh, Dinosaur Jr.) join me to talk about the tribute (available May 3, only on the Discograffiti Patreon - http://www.patreon.com/discograffiti).    Also included on the tribute: Cory Hanson (Wand), Mark Robinson (Unrest, Teenbeat Records founder) and W Cullen Hart (Olivia Tremor Control, co-founder Elephant 6 Recording Company).   I start with the obvious question: “Is ‘Metal Machine Music'... good?”   Music fans will love this episode. Dave's a music obsessive and student of rock and roll. Lou Barlow is nothing short of an indie rock legend. True to the original, Discograffiti creator/host Dave Gebroe's compilation features four long-form tracks, each clocking in at 16 minutes and 1 second, by four indie-rock visionaries: LOU BARLOW (Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh), CORY HANSON (Wand), W. You're forgiven if you tried to search for Pollen on the internet and struggled to find this band. Besides the numerous bands named Pollen, there is also the issue of their debut 1998 album The Glorious Couch Life not appearing on streaming services, rendering it hard to find for the average music listener. That's a shame, because throughout the record, Pollen finds the combination of indie rock energy tinged with a little garage and some danceable rhythms, topped with catchy melodies and smart lyrics. Shades of American bands like Superchunk, Guided By Voices, Beck, Death Cab For Cutie, and Sebadoh peak through, as well as Australian contemporaries like Screamfeeder, Ratcat, Ammonia, and Moler, permeate the sound, from the propulsive "Greater Than" and "Sin as Fast as You Can" to the angular "Walruses to Whales" and quirky "Settle the Score on the Dancefloor."   Songs In This Episode Intro - Million Destinations 12:25 - Sin as Fast as You Can 16:18 - Brighter Day 21:28 - Settle the Score on the Dancefloor 25:08 - Soma and Nerves of Steel 27:56 - Special Features Outro - Not Rocket Science   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. In our latest and final "Albums of..." roundtable, we're tackling what might have been the most prolific year for releases of the entire decade. With the major labels scooping up bands to ride the alternative and grunge wave explosion into mainstream radio and on MTV, 1994 saw not only huge album releases from Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Nine Inch Nails, Alice In Chains, R.E.M. Nirvana, and more, but also the punk explosion thanks to Green Day, The Offspring, Rancid, Bad Religion, and others. This was also the year that across the pond from the US, Britpop topped the charts in the UK thanks to Blur and Oasis, while a new wave of alternative bands shot up the charts like Veruca Salt, Bush, Live, Weezer, Toadies, etc. while the indie underground produced classic records from Pavement, Guided By Voices, Low, Stereolab, Sebadoh, and Superchunk, to name a few. For a big year, we have a big group with a super-sized length. Enjoy!   Songs In This Episode: Intro - 1994 Medley (Interstate Love Song by Stone Temple Pilots, Loser by Beck, Self Esteem by The Offspring, Buddy Holly by Weezer, I'm Broken by Pantera, March of the Pigs by Nine Inch Nails) 16:05 - Last Goodbye by Jeff Buckley 23:36 - Girls & Boys by Blur 39:10 - Everything Zen by Bush 50:25 - Very Best Years by The Grays 1:07:19 - Suffering by Satchel 1:13:30 - Bernie by Failure 1:30:40 - I Am I by Queensrÿche 1:50:51 - Feel The Pain by Dinosaur Jr. Outro - Faster by Manic Street Preachers   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon.
