This week we're discussing Lower, the latest album by Benjamin Booker. After an 8 year hiatus, Booker is back with an album completely unlike his previous outings and one that's incredibly hard to narrow down to a single genre. However, it offers an excitingly diverse, emotionally resonant, and brilliantly produced (thanks to the collaboration of Kenny Segal) set of songs. Benjamin Booker has been relatively quiet since releasing his 2017 album Witness. He released a song called “Black Disco” in 2020 and has collaborated with Armand Hammer as well as Billy Woods & Kenny Segal back in 2023. Almost eight years since his last project, during that down time he has been working towards his new album Lower, this week's WNXP Record of the Week.
Seth Rogen created a new AppleTV+ series, The Studio, which is a satirical look at how executives in Hollywood make decisions on what movies get made. He stars as the head of a fictional Hollywood studio who is trying to save the struggling company. Also, New Yorker staff writer Andrew Marantz talks about how Right-wing podcasts and YouTube channels have become the platforms where men who feel disillusioned and alienated go to feel seen and heard—and the battle on the Left to win them back. Benjamin Booker entered a new sonic world when he tapped LA-based, “producer’s producer” Kenny Segal to work on LOWER, his first new album in seven years. Booker has always eluded categorization; his rootsy, punky, R&B tones all coming together to make something signature. By enlisting Segal, he’s added extra crispy hip-hop beats and a surreal dreaminess that you’ll hear all over Today’s Top Tune: “NEW WORLD.”

In which The Curmudgeons examine the last great era for hip-hop, namely the years between 1999 and 2008. After the catastrophe that was the murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls, hip-hop could have imploded and or lost its footing--or even its respect as a genre. Instead, the movement throughout the 1990s, in which the hardcore went mainstream, carried over in the new century. In fact, hip-hop as a popular music genre exploded, becoming more successful than ever. In the process, genuine pop superstars like Eminem, DMX, Jay-Z, OutKast and Kanye West rose to glory. We discuss those artists and much more on this episode. It's been nearly eight years since today's guest Benjamin Booker released his critically acclaimed second album, Witness, but now he's back with a vengeance with his powerful new album Lower, in stores now, which he made in collaboration with producer Kenny Segal. Booker explains his long road to this highly personal collection of songs. And this past week marked the definitive "last waltz" for The Band with the passing of the last man standing, Garth Hudson. Long Ryders singer/guitarist Sid Griffin, author of Million Dollar Bash: Bob Dylan, The Band, and the Basement Tapes, is here to try and convey the monumental impact that Garth and The Band had on American music and around the world, particularly in light of our present Post-Chalamet Dylan Renaissance, And a reminder, you can still help Musicares help the people who bring you the music by donating at Musicares.org/firerelief and if you're a music business professional in need, you may be eligible for assistance by emailing musicaresrelief@musicares.org The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. It’s been seven years since we last got new music from Benjamin Booker, but don’t despair — a new album is on the way! Lower is out January 24, with the first taste being “Same Kind Of Lonely,” a track full of fuzzy guitars and whispered singing. Benjamin says: “I was thinking a lot about existence and the natural world — how things that start off so beautiful are often twisted into something unsettling or sinister. Maybe the disconnect between the natural state of things and the modified state of things is the source of a lot of pain, suffering, and loneliness in the world.”
Today's Song of the Day is “SHOW AND TELL” from Benjamin Booker's album LOWER, out January 24. Benjamin Booker will be performing at Turf Club on Sunday, February 16.

Full of buzzing energy and ready to burst, guitarist Benjamin Booker is a punk & grit-infused songwriter whose ecstatic and soulful sounds channel vintage soul-rock, gospel and blues. The Tampa-born musician recently took up residence in Mexico for inspiration, then had a crisis of conscience while observing from abroad the news of police shootings and Black Lives Matter protests. His second record, Witness (ATO Records) is an outlet for his examination of self and society, with collaborators ranging from producer Sam Cohen (Resistance Radio: The Man In The High Castle Album, Yellowbirds, Pavo Pavo, Apollo Sunshine), engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes), and the great Mavis Staples. The fiery Benjamin Booker plays for us, in-studio. (From the Archives, 2017.)
Benjamin Booker is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He has recorded two albums: Benjamin Booker (2014) and Witness (2017). He cites The Gun Club, Blind Willie Johnson and T. Rex as influences. His music was described by the Chicago Tribune as "a raw brand of blues/boogie/soul," by The Independent as "frenzied guitar-strumming and raw, soulful vocals that are hair-raising in intensity" and by SPIN as "bright, furious, explosive garage rock."

Benjamin Booker's second album, Witness, finds the musician rallying his blues rock sound to call for respect and justice in troubling times while retaining the sharp musicianship that made his debut stand out. On his return to the KEXP Live Room, Booker joins Troy Nelson for four Witness songs and a conversation about writing songs in Mexico and visiting Third Man Records' headquarters. Hailing from Denver, Ian Walker is an avid filmmaker, the king of the Scumpire, and an overall really nice weirdo. Our conversation goes many places, not stopping shy of guns, gimps, and other family-friendly topics. Danny Malm and Taylor Kobryn add to the catastrophe that is this episode. While none of our episodes to date have been appropriate to do so, this episode—in particular—shouldn't be played out loud at work or around children. Unless, of course, you work from home and your kid is cool. The song at the break is Violent Shiver, by Benjamin Booker.
