Have Giant Steps and Meditations scared you away from John Coltrane? Join us on the other side of the Trane tracks with what might be the best trio of albums ever dropped in the same year. We're talking 1963 Coltrane—at his most accessible (dare we say smooth?) yet still cutting straight to the truth. From the GRAMMY hall-of-famer Ballads to his legendary Impulse! sessions with Duke Ellington and Johnny Hartman, enter the perfect gateway into Coltrane's world. We break down his honest melodies, the masterful support from McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Garrison (and more), and quibble with certain Rudy Van Gelder… choices… Whether you're Coltrane-curious or already converted, this episode has something special for your ears.Link to Spotify playlistTry OS Membership today! → https://osjazz.link/aboutLooking to drop a question? We have the great Chris Botti on the show today. I'm really excited about this one to both record and share it with you. On a whim I checked out Chris' website and happened to see that he was going to be in my neck of the woods, which these days is Virginia Beach, Virginia. This interview that you're about to hear is not like the definitive explanation of Chris's philosophy, his approach to technique and pedagogy, his full history as a trumpeter.I simply went on to some Facebook groups and just said, "Hey, I'm interviewing Chris Botti, what should I ask him?" A few people responded with some really good questions, and that's basically the meat and potatoes of the interview.Enjoy! What you'll hear in this episode:-Why Trumpet is Chris' "calling card" in this new music business...04:20-The paradigm shift of the music business explained from the perspective of one at the top...08:00-One door closes, another opens for the little guy...14:40-Chris' inspirations and influences as a trumpeter...19:45-Why record making and gigging need to be approached radically differently...26:00-Chris' recording and performing sound equipment...30:20-Chris' daily routine and maintenance of the chops while touring...36:15-Why Chris can't bear to part ways with his Martin Committee...37:30-Why Sergei Nakariakov rarely tours in the U.S....42:00-Reflections from host James Newcomb on the interview...44:55-Plus whatever your discerning ears deem worthy of your time and interest...Resources mentioned:Chris' websiteOther Side of the Bell podcast with Chris BottiAbout the Guest:GRAMMY-winning trumpeter Chris Botti has been one of the most popular instrumentalists in the world for nearly three decades; he's collaborated with some of the biggest superstars on the planet, including Sting, Paul Simon, Barbra Streisand, Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Joni Mitchell, Steven Tyler, Andrea Bocelli, Herbie Hancock, Yo-Yo Ma, and others; he's topped the jazz charts with numerous albums, earned multiple Gold and Platinum records, performed with symphony orchestras and on prestigious stages from Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl to the Sydney Opera House. In short, Chris Botti really needs no introduction. Yet with his Blue Note Records debut, he's offering one anyway. Vol.1 is in many ways a fresh start for the trumpeter. Having successfully crossed over from jazz renown to pop stardom, Botti's first album in more than a decade finds him crossing back, with a small group project focused on acoustic jazz and classic standards.“I turned 60 in 2022, at a time that seemed like a restart for so many things in the world,” Botti says. “I wanted to strip away all the orchestral arrangements and special guests and focus more on my playing, the playing of my band, and these jazz classics that we always love playing on stage.”While Botti could boast of the major names with whom he's shared stages, this project allows him to share his enthusiasm for the jazz greats past and present that excite him – his conversation is peppered with references to everyone from Miles Davis to Keith Jarrett to Pat Metheny to Brad Mehldau. He points to landmark albums like Davis' Kind of Blue, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, or Metheny's duo outing with Charlie Haden, Beyond the Missouri Sky as models for the kind of “lifestyle” music he set out to make – music that is exquisite on its own but can also set the scene for a coffee shop or hotel lounge, instantly generating a sophisticated...

"My One and Only Love" Rodney Jordan - Christian Fabian: Conversations (Spice Rack Records, 2021) Rodney Jordan, Christian Fabian. Season Three of Countermelody begins with a potpourri episode of some of my favorite crooners of color. I begin with an example of Bert Williams, the first African-American superstar, and offer a few other examples of important precursors, but I focus on the heyday of the crooner, from the 1940s through the early 1960s, including such honey-voiced singers as Billy Eckstine, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Sammy Davis, Jr., Johnny Hartman, Lou Rawls, Brook Benton, and Arthur Prysock. Since I apply the term “crooner” fairly loosely, I am also able to present singers from outside the traditional repertoire of the standard crooner, including Josh White, Leslie “Hutch” Hutchinson, Harry Belafonte, Barry White, Bobby Short, and Lamont Dozier. The episode concludes with a tribute to Broadway baritones of color and with a stunning live performance of Jackie Wilson singing “Danny Boy” in honor of my birthday. Vocal guest stars include Miriam Makeba, Linda Ronstadt, and Mabel Mercer. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford. Bonus episodes available exclusively to Patreon supporters are currently available and further bonus content including interviews and livestreams is planned for the upcoming season.

Vince is a quintessential smooth jazz vocalist with a mesmerizing sound. If his voice were a fine wine, it would be a 1947 vintage LaFleur Bordeaux. He brings romance to a love story and peace to an evening at home. It was legendary jazz artist, Clay Osborne (brother to R&B great, Jeffrey Osborne), who said "[Vince Eury has] the voice we’ve been longing for.”Vince is widely recognized in Washington, D.C. for his jazz vocals, and was handpicked to perform in President Barack Obama's We Are One Inauguration Concert, where he shared a stage at Lincoln Memorial with such icons as Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, and Jamie Foxx.As a young man, Vince was most influenced by the late Johnny Hartman (who has the distinction of being the only vocalist to ever record with John Coltrane). Vince went on to serve as lead vocalist for the Navy Band of Newport, RI; and while serving in the Navy, he and the Band were showcased across America and in Canada and Iceland.Since deciding to pursue his music fulltime, Vince has released four new singles, one of which - "The Nearness of You" – was selected for the soundtrack of The Serial Cheater, a web series by Silk White.www.vinceeury.com

This week we focus on the music of two of the most influential composers of film and TV scores of all times, Henry Mancini and Ennio Morricone. Their compositional styles lend themselves to jazz interpretations, with Mancini being a soundtracks composer that often relied on jazz motifs and smaller ensembles and Morricone coming to the world of soundtracks after playing the trumpet in jazz bands in the 1940s. So we have two hours of jazz interpretations of their unforgettable themes, performed by Ted Nash, Oranj Symphonette, Shirley Scott, Stanley Turrentine, Lucia Cadotsch, Freddie Roach, Joe Jackson, John Stowell, Quincy Jones, Noël Akchoté, Johnny Hartman, Eddie Harris, Charlie Haden, Pat Metheny, Henry Mancini, John Zorn, Marco Cappelli, Jens Thomas, Enrico Pieranunzi, Marc Johnson, Joey Baron, Marcin Wasilewski, Ennio Morricone. Nuestros invitados: John Coltrane ('It's Easy to remember'); John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman ('They Say It's Wonderful'; 'My One and Only Love'; 'Lush Life'); Kurt Elling ('All or Nothing at All'; 'Dedicated to You'; 'Autumn Serenade'); McCoy Tyner & José James ('You Are Too Beautiful'); Karrin Allison ('What's New'; 'Nancy (With the Laughing Face').

It can feel frustrating to hear that you are overqualified for the job you want. Hiring managers may feel it’s a waste of both time and money to hire you if you have more experience than the job requires. There are ways around this, including doing your research to understand where the company is heading and taking advantage of any connections you have within the company. On this bonus episode of Find Your Dream Job, Johnny Hartman (www.linkedin.com/in/johnanthonyhartman/) and I discuss how he tapped into his personal network to overcome two specific challenges in his job search: skills that were seen as being too specialized and being overqualified. Learn more about Johnny’s career history below in this installment of our Success Stories (www.macslist.org/articles/success-stories) series. What do you do for a career? Who do you work for? From feature films to interactive virtual worlds, I’ve crafted media experiences both commercially for some of the biggest brands on the planet, as well as for entertainment properties. As a cross-platform or transmedia producer, I develop workflows and resolve technical issues while maintaining the project’s creative vision. As the Director of Research and Development for Elevate Pictures, I look to the future to understand the coming media landscape and develop solutions to address the problems of tomorrow. I am currently building out the Story Atlas – a storytelling platform and methodology that pulls consumers into the intersection of brand and entertainment, integrated with industry tools of the trade to improve workflow. The Story Atlas integrates transmedia and production planning with creative assets to maintain the canon of the narrative. It runs on cloud services and uses A.I. to optimize media and maintain narrative control and is a solution that allows your story to flow while holding true to canon. How long did it take you to find this job? Ten months. How did you find your job? What resources did you use? What tool or tactic helped the most? My personal network led to this job. I started out consulting and then was asked to take this position. I used quite a few resources online in my job hunt but none were as powerful as my relationships. I did have success using Linkedin and was offered another position before this one but it would have required me to move so I turned it down. What was the most difficult part of your job search? How did you overcome this challenge? My struggle came from over-qualification and specialized media experience. More than once I was told that “they did not know what to do with me” or they were “afraid I would ‘get bored and find another job.’” I overcame this by embracing my experience and looking beyond the Northwest. I reframed the conversation to be about the BIG picture in media and got concise with my focus. What is the single best piece of advice you would offer other job-seekers? Do what you love! Follow your passion even if you have to learn more about it while you work your current role. Find the path to that passion and be specific about how you can achieve your dream. Why do you love your job? I love being able to create stories that reach and connect with audiences, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Atlanta-based Alexandra Jackson is a classically trained pianist, whose heart and talent has turned to bossa nova, jazz and the Latin beats. She comes by her talent and her heart honestly: her grand aunt was Mattiwilda Dobbs, the African American coloratura soprano who was one of the first black singers to enjoy a major international career in opera and as the daughter of Atlanta’s first Black major, her household was filled with the music of Miles Davis, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Michael Jackson, as well as that of Johnny Hartman, Luciano Pavarotti, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.  Alexandra studied Jazz at the University of Miami, where she was exposed to Brazilian Jazz and performed  with Latin bands and Brazilian ensembles and later in Jazz festivals in the U.S. and in Europe. Her debut project: Alexandra Jackson: Legacy & Alchemy channels  her musical loves and experiences: Brazilian Music, American Jazz & Soul, NeoSoul, and London Soul Jazz for contemporary audiences worldwide. Jenny and the Mexicats was formed 10 years ago in Madrid Spain by an English woman, two Mexicans and a Spaniard, fusing nationalities and personalities. Jenny, a professional trumpeter, linked with Icho, who played double bass, Pantera a guitarist, who loves punk bands and had played  with Icho for many years in Mexico. Pantera then introduced the band to Spanish cajon player David from the world of flamenco. The first album, the bilingual Gold Medal-winning  Jenny And The Mexicats was released in 2011, they moved to Mexico City in 2012, and in 2014 they released their second album, OME.  From then on Jenny and the Mexicats  became known on three continents for  a musical combination that mixes rhythms of jazz, rockabilly, folk, flamenco, reggae, "veracruzano", country and cumbia.
