Barry and Abigail discuss Uh-Oh by David Byrne and sample Wheel Man, Afterglow, and Island Drive from Lincoln & South Brewing Company in Hilton Head Island, Florida. Barry and Abigail spoke briefly about Renée Richards while discussing Now I'm Your Mom. Renée is a transgender woman who competed professionally in tennis in the 1970s. She also fought and won a landmark case in transgender rights in the New York Supreme Court after being barred from numerous women's tennis competitions in 1976 for refusing to take a genetic test to verify her chromosomes. Barry recalled Renée's story as being one of the first instances of widespread media coverage of transgender issues. Abigail heard vague similarities between Girls on My Mind and various songs from The Raconteurs' Consolers of the Lonely (most notably Old Enough). David Byrne performed at the Oscars for his nominated co-written song from Everything Everywhere All at Once, This Is a Life. Read more about the performance. Please take a moment to check out What Am I Making, a multimedia creative endeavor by friend of the podcast Matt Carlson. Barry and Abigail appeared on his sixth podcast episode; listen here! This week's episode was inspired by a casual mention of "Josephine the Plumber" in an episode of the Golden Girls. We have commercial spokespeople these days like Flo from Progressive, Jan from Toyota, and the Limu Emu, but GamerDude grew up with some of the all-time classic commercial characters that lasted for decades. He talks about characters like Mr. Whipple, who couldn't help but squeeze the Charmin, and Mother Nature, who didn't like to be fooled, as well as many others.GamerDude also talks about the commercial jingles he grew up with, and how they have stayed with him for decades. He talks about (and sings!) jingles from Life Buoy soap and Oscar Mayer. He also talks about how the pop singer Barry Manilow got his start in commercial jingles, and shares some of his classic jingles. Besides all the nonsense, we had a great time recording this episode on silence. It's one of the most powerful tools we have for peace, health, and spiritual growth, but how many of us even know how to use it? Have we lost our ability to sit quietly and listen to God's voice? What do you do when you get something stuck in your head? Is it a song, a quote, or maybe a childhood memory? And how the hell did it even get there? Jingles exist for this exact purpose because it is proven to work wonders as an advertisement. We never forget the products just like we never forget those catchy jingles. But which ones are the best or maybe just most annoying? Today we are discussing our Top 5 Jingles. To enhance discussion, no one on this podcast shared their lists beforehand and none of us are experts in said category. We are just a few bros who like to talk about nonsense. The Top 5 Podcast is available on Apple, Google, Pandora, Spotify, Amazon, TuneIn, Stitcher, and Podbean. We appreciate your fandom! If you like what you hear, don't forget to rate and subscribe. (From the Stephen Friedman Gallery) Jeffrey Gibson's work fuses his Choctaw-Cherokee heritage and experience of living in Europe, Asia and the US with references that span club culture, queer theory, fashion, politics, literature and art history. The artist's multi-faceted practice incorporates painting, performance, sculpture, textiles and video, characterised by vibrant colour and pattern. Gibson was born in 1972, Colorado, USA and he currently lives and works in Hudson Valley, New York. The artist combines intricate indigenous artisanal handcraft – such as beadwork, leatherwork and quilting – with narratives of contemporary resistance in protest slogans and song lyrics. This “blend of confrontation and pageantry” is reinforced by what Felicia Feaster describes as a “sense of movement and performance as if these objects ... are costumes waiting for a dancer to inhabit them.” The artist harnesses the power of such materials and techniques to activate overlooked narratives, while embracing the presence of historically marginalised identities. Gibson explains: “I am drawn to these materials because they acknowledge the global world. Historically, beads often came from Italy, the Czech Republic or Poland, and contemporary beads can also come from India, China and Japan. Jingles originated as the lids of tobacco and snuff tins, turned and used to adorn dresses, but now they are commercially made in places such as Taiwan. Metal studs also have trade references and originally may have come from the Spanish, but also have modern references to punk and DIY culture. It's a continual mash-up.” Acknowledging music as a key element in his experience of life as an artist, pop music became one of the primary points of reference in Gibson's practice: musicians became his elders and lyrics became his mantras. Recent paintings synthesise geometric patterns inspired by indigenous American artefacts with the lyrics and psychedelic palette of disco music. What's the difference between a jingle and a sonic logo anyway? Is one better than the other? We'll dig into that in this episode of the Sound In Marketing Podcast. This episode was a re-boot from an article I wrote back in 2019. Thank you to Audio Hero for all those fun filler sound effects. To Meow Mix, Kit Kat, Volkswagen, Tostitos, and Pringles for some excellent examples and to Lucas/McFaul agency, Michael Levine, Trio, Made Music and Massive Music for actually creating these iconic songs and sounds. Throughout this episode, I've also sprinkled some of my own examples in there. If you can spot them let me know. For those interested in sonic strategy and sound design, I would love to chat with you further. Send me a message at Dreamr Productions or you can come find me on Linkedin, Twitter, and Facebook. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to siblings Stan Warnow and Deborah Scott Studebaker whose father was the composer, musician, innovator, band leader and inventor Raymond Scott. While you may not know the name Raymond Scott, you absolutely know his music. That's because while he may not have composed for cartoons, his music is the DNA of most if not all, Looney Toons & Merry Melodies Warner Bros. cartoons. Believe me, you know the song “Powerhouse” & “The Toy Trumpet”.Now if that's all Raymond Scott was known for, that would be a pretty great legacy. But he also composed for big bands, recorded jingles for the likes of Proctor & Gamble and Hamm's Beer, was the orchestra leader on the radio and television show “Your Hit Parade”, invented the Clavinex & Electronium (precursors to the modern synthesizer) and much more. He was a man more comfortable with “the work”, than the fame or celebrity that came along with it. He was happier in his workroom than he was on camera. So exacting was his vision that he often alienated musicians and singers with his demanding ways. Yet his genius was hard to overlook as none other than Barry Gordy of Motown hired him in 1971 after seeing the Electronium in action to become the Director of Motown's electronic music and research department in Los Angeles. The man had ten careers or perhaps only two, as Deb explains. We also talk about to Deb about her mother, entertainer Dorothy Collins who was a nightclub performer, starred on Broadway in Steven Sondheim's Follies and on television on Candid Camera & Hollywood Palace among others. It's a wild ride discussing the very earliest electronic music, the music that defined all of our youth, and a man so driven by his passion, he essentially invented the fax machine decades before it became a reality. Enjoy, the latest episode of Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
