If you thought the first part of our series was catchy, wait til we enter the modern era where all the jingles that played throughout our lifetimes will be activated like sleeper cells inside us. For part two of our series, we are starting our history in the middle of the century when television commercials began to rely heavily on jingles, leading to a decades-long reign of musical advertising that lasted well into the 1990s. In addition, I'll tell Sarah the stories behind some of the most beloved jingles of all time for a trip down a hyper-consumerist memory lane.
We all contain within us the many cheesy tunes of catchy capitalism that marked our childhoods, those hyper-memorable earworms that, depending on your age, feel like an invention of the 90s, of the 80s, of the 70s, of the 60s. But these musical, lyrical advertisements have a much longer history than that. For part one of this two part series, I share with Sarah Marshall of You're Wrong About the goofy evolution of the jingle from its distant origins into the age of American radio. For part two, we'll explore the stories behind some of the most memorable TV jingles of all time, and I guarantee your psyche will force you to sing along. It's a fun and lighthearted conversation that's sure to bring a smile to your face and get you singing along.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week, we look at a sub-category of jingles. Most successful jingles are catchy little earworms. But these particular little ditties use lyrics to tell you how to use the product, or how to play the advertised game. They're not just catchy… they're rhythmic instruction manuals. We know you want to listen to all the ads in this show. -Rob opens by celebrating the long-overdue arrest of a Benghazi terror suspect, naming the fallen heroes and marveling that Democrats somehow still manage not to notice. -The show torches the “Jim Crow 2.0” voter-ID narrative, pointing out that nearly everyone—including Democrats—supports ID, except the party leadership currently looting the treasury. -A deeply emotional moment hits when Lisa from Ohio calls in to honor her late Vietnam-veteran father, reminding Rob (and listeners) that the winning jingle has real meaning beyond the laughs. -Mary Walter joins via the Newsmax hotline, delivering rapid-fire wit on voter ID, name changes, political correctness gone feral, and why women somehow managed paperwork just fine for centuries. Welcome back to The Shonen Shojo ShoShow, where anime rants, side quests, and deep fandom feelings collide. In this episode, Pino Mack and Pauly kick things off with classic nonsense (ramen metaphors included), shout out international listeners, and immediately derail into a nostalgic side quest about MTV, 90s jingles, and lost music video culture. From there, things get real.⚠️ SPOILERS AHEAD ⚠️Pino unloads long-simmering frustrations about the My Hero Academia epilogue, from Deku's ending to dropped plot threads, Iron Man energy, and romances that never paid off. We talk epilogues, endings, and why “predictable” doesn't always mean “satisfying.”We also mix in:

Happy Friday! We tried to "motivate" people one day away from completing Dry January, a plow truck driver in Philly went viral, and TikTok users are attempting soda jingles. We got introduced to a woman who went viral for her cream cheese review (for all the wrong reasons) and had some fun with "Fill In The Blank Friday!" Welcome to your daily comedy podcast, where absolutely nothing makes sense and we like it that way.Today's show kicks off with a story that nobody asked for but everyone will remember forever: a 73-year-old former born-again Christian reinventing herself as an escort named Busty Granny. She spent decades in prayer and celibacy, then hit 57, downloaded the internet, and said “oh… THIS is what we've been missing.” Now she's got clients young enough to still have homework and zero interest in OnlyFans because, quote, that sounds boring. Inspirational? Traumatizing? Both. Then we get into the most depressing career math of all time: a woman casually sings seven words into her phone for a Dr Pepper jingle and walks away with $2 million, while the rest of us are out here working full-time jobs and eating gas-station sandwiches. Naturally, this leads to the crew trying to invent jingles for every brand that will absolutely never call back.Somehow that spirals into one of the most fun debates we've had in a while — the biggest debut albums of all time. We're talking massive numbers, MTV miracles, and how one 4am spin turned a “failed” album into a 50-million-copy monster. Along the way we argue, forget basic facts, remember them loudly, and realize radio used to be way more powerful than TikTok will ever admit.Movies get dragged (respectfully… mostly), Brendan Fraser gets the comeback love he deserves, and we debate whether seeing a movie in a theater automatically adds two letter grades just because popcorn exists. In Crap on Celebrities, we hit everything from band lawsuits and surprise documentaries to tour dropouts, concert ticket chaos, and some genuinely heartbreaking but honest conversations about aging, memory, and how terrifying it is to not know what's happening inside your own brain. We also celebrate birthdays, overshare existential dread, and somehow end the show discussing a literal geyser of poop water blasting into the Potomac River — because if we're going to spiral, we're doing it together. It's another daily comedy podcast episode packed with weird news, pop culture, dark laughs, and moments where we all pause and go, “Wait… are we okay?”Spoiler: probably not. But at least we're funny.MUSICMotley Crue has officially won its heated legal battle against former guitarist Mick Mars. Lainey Wilson sure has kept herself busy. It was just announced that Netflix has officially acquired the new documentary "Lainey Wilson: Keepin' Country Cool". It drops on April 22nd. Two more artists have dropped out of the 2026 Rock the Country Festival. Morgan Wade and Carter Faith are no longer part of the lineup. And neither artist has shared an official reason for stepping away. Their exit comes just days after Ludacris also dropped out. His team called his original booking a "mix-up." The festival is headlined by Kid Rock and will feature Jason Aldean, Jelly Roll, Miranda Lambert, and more.In other Kid Rock News – he went to Congress to confront an issue we're all united on: How much Ticketmaster and Live Nation charge for shows. TVThe fourth season of Ted Lasso is set to debut this summer. Stephen Colbert announced on "Late Night With Seth Meyers" that the final episode of "The Late Show" will air on Thursday, May 21. MOVING ON INTO MOVIE NEWS:Matthew Lillard recently caught a stray from Quentin Tarantino when he said he didn't care for him. But that resulted in an outpouring of love that made Matthew feel like he was living through his own wake. Actress and producer Patricia Schneider has filed for divorce from Rob Schneider, describing their 15-year marriage as "irretrievably broken" with no chance of reconciliation. Bill Cosby has admitted under oath that he obtained prescriptions for Quaaludes specifically to give to women. Bruce Willis' wife, Emma says Bruce is unaware of his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis.AND FINALLYHere are five of the BEST:1. Jack Black: "I was begging my boss for an extra shift, he overheard and tipped me $100 on a $20ish tab. From then on, he never left me less than a $50 tip and would always check in with me when it was the end of the month to make sure I had rent cash."2. Harrison Ford: "My uncle said that he's incredibly nice and took the whole crew out for lunch to thank them for working on his helicopter."3. Justin Bieber: "He was by himself at a mall, and he wasn't trying to be incognito . . . He drew me in with a big hug and chatted me up. He was lovely."4. Dolly Parton: "Can confirm that she's just as great as you'd assume. She was just so nice to everyone. She was a lot smaller than I expected."Here are five of the WORST:1. Jennifer Lopez: "She was super rude and dismissive . . . and had this attitude that she was better than you."2. Jenna Fischer from "The Office": "[She] was really difficult to work with. Just really demanding."3. Jared Leto: "[He's] a narcissistic [A-hole]. He complains about every single thing and really enjoys being difficult. I think he does it for fun."4. Diana Ross: "[She] cut in front of me at the airport check-in counter once . . . I was flabbergasted by this lady who had the guts to sweep in front of us AND touch the gate agent's computer."5. Another day, another high of 14° today. It's Thursday, so that means we asked each other Hypothetical questions. Brian's question was the classic "Trolley dilemma" Jean's was: "Would you rather be completely alone all the time or have people around all the time?" Also on Thursdays, we talk to Office Cora to find out what she's up to in the 715 this weekend. Today, she also recapped her experience at last weekend's Riverfront Revolt. In the news this morning, a candidate for Governor of WI has dropped out of the race, a lawsuit involving Costco's rotisserie chicken, a recall on Gerber biscuits, and UPS is cutting a bunch of jobs nationwide. In sports, the Badgers overcame a 20-point deficit to beat the Gophers last night, the Bucks are in Washington tonight, Giannis trade rumors are starting to really heat up with the NBA trade deadline looming, the Browns have hired a new head coach, and another golfer is leaving LIV and heading back to the PGA tour. We talked about what's on TV today/tonight and discussed Neilsen's 2025 year-end streaming numbers. A guy in Wisconsin was rescued by some strangers after he fell through the ice on a lake while trying to ice fish, and a snowplow driver cleared the way for a woman to get her baby to the hospital in Cincinnati during a snow storm. Elsewhere in sports, the Duke QB officially transfers to Miami, the giant amount of money expected to be wagered on the Super Bowl, and a "cursed" NBA game!!! Google recently released some stats on what kind of winter-related searches were popular during the last few weeks, and a viral jingle for Dr. Pepper has inspired many other people to try and create jingles for their favorite sodas. And in today's episode of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who cut off his own foot to get into medical school, a substitute teacher in Las Vegas who got fired after using the N-word during a class, a bunch of sewage is flowing into the Potomac River and creating a "geyser of poop", a #FloridaMan who was trying to toughen up his kid, and another #FloridaMan who was banging his vacuum in the middle of the street in broad daylight.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We have a man making sweet sweet love to his Dyson and a drunk soldier who slept it off in an old folks home in the Ill-Advised News . We play a TV themed Synonym Game, try and make our own jingles, and try not to get fired. We learn cheaters listen to one style of music, have a new coworker join us in the studio for a fun game, and talk to Diana of Hofbrauhaus Buffalo about Can’t Beat Cassiday live, which is this Saturday. In this episode of Selective Ignorance, Mandii B is joined by super producer A-King, journalist Jayson Rodriguez, and Jason “Jah” Lee for a wide-ranging, culture-forward conversation that blends humor, critique, and social commentary. The episode opens with reflections on a recent winter storm and the collective panic it caused, including questionable food preparation decisions and general storm-time ignorance [00:00–05:05]. From there, the discussion pivots into the evolving creator economy, unpacking what true ownership looks like through the lens of Kevin Hart’s licensing deal and Kavi Lamay’s groundbreaking AI digital twin, raising the question of whether everyone — and everything — is ultimately for sale [26:32]. The energy shifts as the crew dives into the lucrative and often-overlooked power of advertising jingles, sparked by a viral Dr. Pepper jingle that earned its creator a major payout, leading into a hilarious, improvised jingle-creation challenge that showcases the hosts’ chemistry and creativity [41:11–42:41], while also examining the fine line between catchy marketing and provocative advertising [47:22]. Balancing the fun with heavier topics, the conversation turns toward literacy and media access in prisons and why storytelling and education still matter behind bars [52:44], followed by a nuanced breakdown of Kanye West’s recent apology and how public perception, accountability, and redemption play out in real time [58:03]. The episode closes with a candid discussion on relationship dynamics, centered around Cam’ron and his ex, exploring communication, ego, and emotional maturity in modern relationships [01:11:39]. Altogether, the episode captures Selective Ignorance at its best — blending sharp humor, cultural critique, and thoughtful dialogue about ownership, media, and accountability in today’s attention economy.

We're diving deep into the world of iconic album cover art with our special guest, Frm. Elektra Records Art Director Bob Heimall. A name behind some of the most memorable visuals in music history. From his humble beginnings at Elektra Records in the late 1960s to becoming the youngest art director in the business, Bob Heimall's creativity has graced records by legends like Carly Simon, Jim Croce, The Doors, Bread, Iggy Pop, and even Yoko Ono.You'll hear Bob Heimall share personal stories, like joining Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin for an unforgettable moment in a New York penthouse, rubbing elbows with rock royalty, working with Carly Simon while she breastfed her son, and being the sole audience for Jim Croce's final album performance just two weeks before tragedy struck. He'll reveal behind-the-scenes anecdotes about album art decisions—some even leading to legendary band debates—describe the step-by-step design process before Photoshop, and recount the emotional impact these collaborations left on him.Plus, Bob Heimall discusses the cutthroat world of record labels, his transition from Elektra to Arista under Clive Davis, and reflects on the vital role music—and its packaging—plays in shaping our memories.

When the Elven village suddenly falls silent, with no jingling coins or cheerful shoppers in sight, even Pixie Mixie's sweetshop and Bauble's decorations sit untouched. A sore thumb, a missing stash of Jingles, and a rather proud magpie soon reveal a curious mystery at the heart of it all. Join me, Small Folk, for a tale of teamwork, treasure, and the unexpected hero who saved Christmas shopping in Lapland.
The countdown is on. In just one week, Santa Claus will spread Christmas cheer across the world to those on his Nice list. But in St. Louis, Santa, aka Kris Kringle, performs with his band, the Jolly Jingles, at their annual Christmas Extravaganza. They play a medley of traditional Christmas music — and originals — infused with gospel, rock and roll and ska. Kringle sat down with STLPR's visuals editor Brian Munoz to discuss his music, his special brand of holiday joy and the band's new single “Egg Nog: North Pole Rock and Roll.”

Send us a textThank you for tuning in! On today's episode, I am joined once again by Jason Lady, a talented author, certified Gen X'er, and nostalgia nerd much like myself! In this episode, we take a look at our top 10 favorite tv commercial jingles, which we remember fondly from our childhoods, growing up in the '80s and '90s. I created a playlist on YouTube of our favorite jingles, you can check that out here.Support the showVisit: https://www.popcultureretrospective.com/ for all things Pop Culture Retrospective! Barry and Abigail discuss Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits and sample Wild Dog – Pale Ale and Wild Dog – Shempa Ale from Tiemann Beer in Lusaka, Zambia; Strawberry Rhubarb from New Glarus Brewing Company in New Glarus, Wisconsin; Coconut Key Lime Pie Drips and Mischievous Grin from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa; and Gallo / Famosa from Cervecería Centro Americana in Guatemala City, Guatemala.Read about how the Money for Nothing music video came to be, or watch the video. We first sampled New Glarus on our season 4 Christmas episode, Christmas Beers (Straight No Chaser and Gifted Beers).Barry pointed out that Walk of Life references other songs, and Abigail compared it to American Pie by Don McLean.Abigail formally retracted a fun “fact” she had previously shared on the podcast regarding artificial banana flavoring being based on the Gros Michel banana instead of the Cavendish banana, which is the most common banana cultivar eaten today. The 2013 SciShow video where she first learned this false fact has since been edited to remove any reference to this hypothesis but points to this article that explains the hypothesis. This Hank Green video first brought the debunking of this hypothesis to Abigail's attention. We first sampled Barn Town on our season 4 episode Barntown (Phish and Barn Town Brewery).Abigail called Why Worry an “adult lullaby,” similar to Calm Down by Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons. She then entered Why Worry into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Little April Shower from Bambi (1942). She also brought up Baby Genius by Eels as having instrumental similarities. Barry mentioned Rain by Hans Zimmer from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002). The “vibes” in the personnel list likely refers to the vibraphone, which could very well have produced the rain sounds in Why Worry.Abigail asked if Mischievous Grin would count as a “cream tangerine” (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!).Barry had heard that the three war songs on this album were inspired by the Falklands War between Argentina and the United Kingdom that lasted for a little over two months in 1982. Abigail had always pictured the Vietnam War, partly because of the imagery in Ride Across the River, and partly because Abigail's consumption of war media was heavily influenced by The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, a novel about the Vietnam War.While discussing The Man's Too Strong, Abigail referenced an in-character speech by comedian and professional Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan.Up next… Version 2.0 by Garbage, Abigail's annual Phone-a-Friend submission, this time with Carlo “from Canada” Sgro, the namesake of Carlo's Corner!Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe.Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition.Follow Barry or Abigail on Untappd to see what we're drinking when we're not on mic!Leave us a rating or a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!Facebook | Instagram | Bluesky | YouTube | Substack | Website | Email us | Virtual Jukebox | Beer Media Group

A good jingle is short, catchy and teaches you a business name or phone number that you can't get out of your head — maybe even for years. This hour we celebrate the art of the local jingle with jingle writers who have composed some legendary earworms. This show is a rebroadcast from July.Jim Giberty is based in Bethel and wrote ads for local ski areas, as well as some broader New England gems, most notable, The Lobster Claw in Cape Cod. Cary Reich is based in Florida, but he penned songs for Pizza Putt and Wendell's Furniture that will be familiar to longtime Vermonters. And we also hear from Daisy Nell, a folk musician who had some of her songs turned into local jingles. Her most famous was for the Snowsville General Store in 1979.Originally broadcast live on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at noon. Rebroadcast on Monday, November 24, 2025 at noon and 7 p.m.Have questions, comments or tips? Send us a message or check us out on Instagram.
