Baxie speaks with Neil Gust from Heatmiser and No.2. In 1991 Neil Gust and the late Elliott Smith formed Heatmiser in Portland, Oregon soon after graduating from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. Heatmiser would release three albums including the critically acclaimed “Mic City Sons” in 1996. By this point Elliott Smith began her legendary solo career (which included six studio albums and a Grammy nomination for the music of the film Good Will Hunting). Neil Gust went on to form his own band, No.2, which released two exceptional records before leaving music for a very success career in commercial video editing. 20 years later Neil Gust would reform No.2 and release an amazing comeback album—“First Love” in 2022. ▶ Dans le Tempo # 94 Le podcast des passionnés de musique se délocalise à l'occasion d'une émission spéciale en hommage au musicien Cola Boyy, décédé en 2024. Our guest today on the podcast is Canadian alt-pop artist renforshort. The Toronto-born songwriter has spent the past few years carving out a name as one of pop's most compelling new voices—blending elements of indie rock, folk, and experimental alt-pop into a sound that's entirely her own. Influenced by the likes of Amy Winehouse, Nirvana, and Elliott Smith, ren's genre-fluid style and sharp lyricism have led to collaborations with Mike Shinoda, PJ Harding, and Travis Barker. Last week, she released her brand new EP a girl's experience—a bold and vulnerable collection that marks a return to her indie-pop roots, reflecting on life, love, and the messiness of growing up. While we were in Los Angeles recently, we sat down with ren to chat all about the new EP, the emotional weight music can carry, and the joy of experimenting with sound. We also swap stories about bad music tattoos and revisit her past trip to Australia.renforshort: Instagram / Spotify Visit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

Send us a textFrankie and Kelly Maxwell stop by the show to discuss how the band came together, their father and his love of music, their new EP, Red Shelter, sobriety, and more. *****Shurr Jr is a family power trio that consists of a guitarist/vocalist, Nick Maxwell, Drums, Frankie Maxwell, and Kelly Maxwell on bass. The siblings' father, Frank Maxwell, was an Omaha music legend who played guitar in the band Fifth of May in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No doubt, the apples didn't fall far from the tree. They're a band made up of two brothers and a sister from Sioux Falls. Their father was a well-known musician in Omaha, but he died a few years ago. Since they were a very musical family, the kids decided to do a band as a tribute to their dad... The name "Shurr Jr." is a takeoff on one of their dad's favorite sayings, "Sure, Junior" as a replacement for "Yep, okay."The name of the EP is also a nod to their father, too... He wanted to name a band or album "Red Shelter," but he passed away before he could make that happen, so the kids in Shurr Jr. decided to name that album as another tribute to him.Musically, they take elements of Pixies, Elliott Smith, Husker Du, Avett Brothers, the Replacements, and Title Fight. On this episode we are joined by the Sioux Falls SD indie rock band Shurr Jr. In 2015, siblings Nick and Frankie began writing music and jamming together in their mother's garage, drawing inspiration from Elliott Smith, the Avett Brothers, Title Fight, and Charmer. At the time, their sister Kelly Maxwell was teaching herself to play guitar, often listening and vibing along to their creations. The trio's musical journey took on a deeper, more personal meaning after the loss of their father, Frank—an influential member of the Omaha, NE band Fifth of May. In honor of Frank's legacy, the siblings turned to music as a way to channel their grief and keep his spirit alive. The band's name, “Sure, Junior,” is a loving tribute to Frank's iconic catchphrase. "Anything At All" Since the late '90s, the Pennsylvania-born musician Denison Witmer has been quietly producing one of the most stirring and affecting bodies of work in modern music. That body of work is also one of the most consistent. With close to fifteen albums under his belt, including Of Joy And Sorrow, Philadelphia Songs and The Ones Who Wait, Witmer's music brings to mind the work of everyone from Paul Simon to John Martyn to Elliott Smith. The Lancaster native has collaborated with everyone from The Innocence Mission to Rosie Thomas, he's toured the U.S. and Europe, did a side project called The River Bends with members of One Star Hotel, and he's been recording for Sufjan Stevens' Asthmatic Kitty label since 2011. Produced by Stevens, his new album Anything At All is his first since 2020's American Foursquare and it's a gentle stunner. From the rousing opener "Focus Ring" to the contemplative "Slow Motion Snow" Anything At All is filled with tremendous sensitivity and poetic elegance. It's a meditation on time, family, and art and rather than stress out about the sand falling through the hourglass, it chooses instead to examine each grain as it falls. It's brave, unflinching and glorious work. www.denisonwitmer.bandcamp.com (http://www.denisonwitmer.bandcamp.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers IG and BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Madonna's in the kitchen getting dragged across the floor and getting sued for one million dollars! Thank you - as always - for listening. We are so excited to be resuming our conversations with each and every one of you. It's a Revolution of Love!
Key Change is a new conversation series within Song Exploder, where I talk to fascinating people about the music that's transformed them.My first guest is Sophie Thatcher, an actor and musician whose credits include starring in the TV show Yellowjackets, the film Heretic, and the new movie Companion. I met Sophie through Companion, because I composed the score to the film, and she contributes vocals to a few of the tracks I wrote. For this episode, we discussed how "Waltz #1" by Elliott Smith shaped Sophie's tastes and work. For more, visit songexploder.net/keychange. You can listen to "Waltz #1" by Elliott Smith here.
