I remember back in the mid 90s when I first got into Elliott Smith's music and discovered that he also had a band. That band was called Heatmiser, and they were putting out amazing music, as well. A particular favorite for me was their 1996 album Mic City Sons, an album I've listened to hundreds of times over the years. And they've just released out an expanded 30th anniversary edition via Jack White's Third Man records that includes demos of tunes from the album, previously unreleased recordings from the sessions, and even a full band version of Elliott's solo tune “Christian Brothers.” It was awesome getting to talk with Heatmiser singer and guitarist and co-songwriter Neil Gust about the making of Mic City Sons — what went right and what went wrong; by the time it came out they had all but broken up — and also about the making of Heatmiser which was Neil and Elliott and bassist Sam Coomes (also of Quasi), and drummer Tony Lash. We delve into how Neil and Elliott first met as college classmates, initially playing in a band together called Swimming Jesus before as graduation approached they came up with the idea for Heatmiser, and of course we also talk about Neil's own personal history as a guitarist and songwriter. Over the years, he has recorded under the moniker No. 2. You can get a vinyl copy of the Mic City Sons 30th anniversary edition here.

Scott Robertson can no longer be accused of being timid with his All Blacks team selections. Ten changes were made to the starting XV for Saturday's third and final test against France in Hamilton. Ethan de Groot, Fabian Holland, Patrick Tuipulotu, Ardie Savea and Rieko Ioane are the only players remaining from the last run-on side. Newstalk ZB's voice of rugby Elliott Smith told Heather du Plessis-Allan that opportunities to test out different players and different combinations don't come along too often. He says the All Blacks still want to win the final test, but Robertson has to take these opportunities to find out a little bit more about the likes of Damian McKenzie on 10, Samipeni Finau on blindside flank, among others. “You just won't get them too often, and it certainly won't come in the rugby championship.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Baxie speaks with Neil Gust from Heatmiser and No.2. In 1991 Neil Gust and the late Elliott Smith formed Heatmiser in Portland, Oregon soon after graduating from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. Heatmiser would release three albums including the critically acclaimed “Mic City Sons” in 1996. By this point Elliott Smith began her legendary solo career (which included six studio albums and a Grammy nomination for the music of the film Good Will Hunting). Neil Gust went on to form his own band, No.2, which released two exceptional records before leaving music for a very success career in commercial video editing. 20 years later Neil Gust would reform No.2 and release an amazing comeback album—“First Love” in 2022. Earlier this year, Gust released a great compilation of unreleased tracks with Elliott Smith entitled “The Music of Heatmiser”. Absolutely amazing! Our guest today on the podcast is Canadian alt-pop artist renforshort. The Toronto-born songwriter has spent the past few years carving out a name as one of pop's most compelling new voices—blending elements of indie rock, folk, and experimental alt-pop into a sound that's entirely her own. Influenced by the likes of Amy Winehouse, Nirvana, and Elliott Smith, ren's genre-fluid style and sharp lyricism have led to collaborations with Mike Shinoda, PJ Harding, and Travis Barker. Last week, she released her brand new EP a girl's experience—a bold and vulnerable collection that marks a return to her indie-pop roots, reflecting on life, love, and the messiness of growing up. While we were in Los Angeles recently, we sat down with ren to chat all about the new EP, the emotional weight music can carry, and the joy of experimenting with sound. We also swap stories about bad music tattoos and revisit her past trip to Australia.renforshort: Instagram / Spotify Visit our official website here and follow us across our socials.

Send us a textFrankie and Kelly Maxwell stop by the show to discuss how the band came together, their father and his love of music, their new EP, Red Shelter, sobriety, and more. *****Shurr Jr is a family power trio that consists of a guitarist/vocalist, Nick Maxwell, Drums, Frankie Maxwell, and Kelly Maxwell on bass. The siblings' father, Frank Maxwell, was an Omaha music legend who played guitar in the band Fifth of May in the ‘80s and ‘90s. No doubt, the apples didn't fall far from the tree. They're a band made up of two brothers and a sister from Sioux Falls. Their father was a well-known musician in Omaha, but he died a few years ago. Since they were a very musical family, the kids decided to do a band as a tribute to their dad... The name "Shurr Jr." is a takeoff on one of their dad's favorite sayings, "Sure, Junior" as a replacement for "Yep, okay."The name of the EP is also a nod to their father, too... He wanted to name a band or album "Red Shelter," but he passed away before he could make that happen, so the kids in Shurr Jr. decided to name that album as another tribute to him.Musically, they take elements of Pixies, Elliott Smith, Husker Du, Avett Brothers, the Replacements, and Title Fight. On this episode we are joined by the Sioux Falls SD indie rock band Shurr Jr. In 2015, siblings Nick and Frankie began writing music and jamming together in their mother's garage, drawing inspiration from Elliott Smith, the Avett Brothers, Title Fight, and Charmer. At the time, their sister Kelly Maxwell was teaching herself to play guitar, often listening and vibing along to their creations. The trio's musical journey took on a deeper, more personal meaning after the loss of their father, Frank—an influential member of the Omaha, NE band Fifth of May. In honor of Frank's legacy, the siblings turned to music as a way to channel their grief and keep his spirit alive. The band's name, “Sure, Junior,” is a loving tribute to Frank's iconic catchphrase. Key Change is a new conversation series within Song Exploder, where I talk to fascinating people about the music that's transformed them.My first guest is Sophie Thatcher, an actor and musician whose credits include starring in the TV show Yellowjackets, the film Heretic, and the new movie Companion. I met Sophie through Companion, because I composed the score to the film, and she contributes vocals to a few of the tracks I wrote. For this episode, we discussed how "Waltz #1" by Elliott Smith shaped Sophie's tastes and work. For more, visit songexploder.net/keychange. You can listen to "Waltz #1" by Elliott Smith here.
