Episode 042: Grab your slap bracelets and dial-up internet - we're time traveling back to the decade that gave us frosted tips and existential angst! This episode, we're diving deep into the musical equivalent of Tamagotchis: one-hit wonders that defined a generation. Geoff, Russ, and Dave strap on their Jinkos, fire up the boombox, and break down the soundtrack of awkward adolescence with Eve 6, Superdrag, New Radicals, Harvey Danger, Hum, and Spacehog. Bonus: Geoff unleashes a rant that'll make your AOL chatroom look tame, and the guys coin a verb so ridiculous, it might up the ante on language.

Between his father's banjo picking and his mother's love of Motown, Superdrag's John Davis eventually began writing tunes that would channel Stax's classic soul and Big Star-adjacent power-pop through the blurred guitar wall of My Bloody Valentine -- an eventual blueprint for the band's cult classic debut album Regretfully Yours in 1996. But between grueling tours and generous MTV airplay for the infectious "Sucked Out," John would discover a second home in local Knoxville, Tennessee music shop Lost & Found Records, where he says owners Mike and Maria Armstrong became like a surrogate aunt and uncle, further deepening his love of vinyl. On this episode, John chats about sobriety, Superdrag's future, and nostalgia's double-edged sword. His latest solo outing titled Jinx is now available digitally, on CD and wax via lostinohio.com. Once in a while, you find a band that just does everything right. Western Massachusetts band THE GLAD MACHINEhas all the right elements, the big hooks, big guitars and the reliable rhythms that make it a joy to discover. The band is helmed by vocalist Brad Thayer with Neal Robinson (Bass), Greg Saulmon (guitar) and Mike Franklin (drums) Tommy Pluta (2nd guitar/vocals). The list of influences is a who's who of power pop; Cheap Trick, The Posies, Jellyfish, and Superdrag. It's been a long time since The Glad Machine's self titled album, but thankfully the quartet from Northampton Massachussets have lost none of their chops. Indeed, there's even more variety on "Hey". The group sound and blend as well as ever and the diversions are interesting and beautifully played.Brad Thayer is still well in Robin Zander territory and the band's default is somewhere between Cheap Trick and Sloan, but the subtleties are more evident on "Hey." Eight songs, eight big choruses, wonderfully produced, "Hey" is an album of songs that rock out, but also two slower affairs that show a very different side of The Glad Machine. The best part is that we have even newer music to look forward to from THE GLAD MACHINE!!! Thanks for listening!!! Not many 90s rock bands called Arkansas home, and even fewer looked to the straightforward radio pop of 1970s and 80s as a launching point for their sound. Yet on Ho Hum's 1996 debut Local, the band from Bradley, Arkansas tuned the radio dial to sounds of Big Star, The Plimsouls, The Knack, Dramarama, and early Tom Petty, to name a few, for their catchy, unpretentious sound. Though released in the middle of alternative decade, there isn't a note of angst or grunge to be found, instead forging a sound closer to likes of Velvet Crush, Sloan, Superdrag and Matthew Sweet at their most straightforward. From uptempo gems like opener "Around the World" to the infectious "Don't Go Out with Your Friends Tonite," to soulful ballads "Disappear" and "Superhuman," both featuring horn sections, the band clearly has an ear for an earworm melody.
Monday night stone! Steve requests a recall from Mike about the legendary Fuck-Around Brown from Mike's stint in jail many moons ago. Morning show seem to exist only to remind us of the stuff we remember from 20-30 years ago. Mike is clueless about some supposed presidential primaries that have taken place. Steve has the breakdown of the Supreme Court's latest ball washing of Donald Trump's zany transcontinental litigation shenanigans. It seems that technological advances like lane assist for drivers may be reducing the competency of the masses. Luke serves Mike because Mike brought up the same Ben Mendelsohn story from the 2012 film Killing Them Softly like he always does. We sneak in a Bud Light commercial break this week. Don't skip it! Undecided voters are real and the proof if in the endless advertising that defines the culture of the United States. Joe writes in because he knows his email makes the show that much better! Joe shares a video with us from some dude from The Austin School who breaks down the brutal realities of the Palestinian genocide. The video shares certain traits with the SNL clip featuring Bill Hader trying to raise funds for starving people in Africa. Obviously we then had to play the clips of Bill Hader doing Alan Alda impressions. Steve has a bone to pick about Mike's favoritism for Aaron Sorkin's work. He is not having it. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with Sucked Out by Superdrag. Austin Texas quartet GENTLEMEN ROGUES celebrate aggressive guitar pop anthems — bearing the influences of The Replacements, Superdrag, Jawbreaker, and similar visionaries — and have been gaining momentum and increased attention. Since their debut in 2011, the band — Danny Dunlap (guitar/vocals), Josh Power (drums), John Christoffel (guitar), and Dave Hawkins (bass, vocals) — have honed their hooks over numerous singles, EPs, and the 2022 full-length collection, A History of Fatalism. Springsteen sideman Steven van Zandt hand-picked their single “Do the Resurrection!” as the “Coolest Song in the World” on his SiriusXM radio show, Little Steven's Underground Garage. Garnering heavy airplay, listeners worldwide agreed, voting “Do the Resurrection!” as one of the top ten “Coolest Songs of 2021.” Gentlemen Rogues have supported diverse acts like the Lemonheads, Smoking Popes, the Dandy Warhols, Mrs Magician, and Riverboat Gamblers on stages across the U.S. and the UK. In recent years Gentlemen Rogues opened for indie-punk icons Superchunk and Bob Mould, who personally selected the band to provide sole support on the Texas leg of his Distortion and Blue Hearts tour. Brand New full length "Surface Noise" is set for release February 16th 2024. Thanks for listening!!!
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Há a história de Fernando Madureira, líder dos Super Dragões, há a relação com Pinto da Costa, e há toda a cultura das claques dos clubes, permanente foco de tensões, violência e extremismos. Porquê?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Superdrag first gained recognition with their debut album, "Regretfully Yours," which featured the hit single "Sucked Out." Elektra records upped the dough for a sophomore album hoping the band would follow-up the hit with more radio friendly singles. Instead, "Head Trip in Every Key," marked a significant departure from their freshman effort. The band continued to deliver their trademark catchy melodies, but this time, they incorporated more diverse musical elements, like psychedelic rock and Beach Boys-esque pop. The album featured a broader range of instruments and experimental sounds, showcasing the band's evolving musical maturity. The band's sound became more intricate and layered, reflecting a greater musical complexity in their compositions. Despite these changes, Superdrag's unmistakable energy and John Davis' distinctive vocals remained at the core of their sound, making "Head Trip in Every Key" an important milestone in their musical evolution. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Today we're talking with Ryan Allen of the band Extra Arms about Superdrag's third album, "In the Valley of Dying Stars," from the year 2000. As much of a fan of this band as I am, I somehow completely missed this album. Like most people, I was fixated with "Regretfully Yours," so I missed out on this mid-career highlight. It feels like I'm not the only one and I chat with Ryan about this. So if you haven't heard it definitely check it out after our talk. Extra Arms released their most recent album "Up From Here" in 2019, and from what a lil' birdie told me, they have another one on the way in early 2022. Simply great power-pop from Detroit. https://extraarms.bandcamp.com/
