We're finishing off season 8 with a real banger! First up is one of the best interviews from the archives – a 2007 chat with Mike Reno of Loverboy. Mike is a gifted storyteller as he explains the origins of the band's name, why a legacy band creates new music, and why they were embraced by MTV immediately. Mike also talks about their late bassist Scott Smith, who was declared missing when he was swept overboard by a large wave while sailing off the coast of San Francisco. Mike then tells us the stories behind some of Loverboy's biggest hits, including “Turn Me Loose”, “Working For The Weekend” and “The Kid Is Hot Tonite”. Following the Loverboy chat, we have an amazing series of clips from Chuck Berry – the very first inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Chuck breaks down a number of his biggest hits – and then veers off in a strange direction. But Chuck has a lot to say and it's all good. Great to have so much audio from one of the pioneers of rock and roll. Next up is Tom's very weird chat with Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols. Johnny talks about The Pistols' legacy and why life with Public Image Ltd was a much more rewarding experience. Johnny also uses the opportunity to bash the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Strangely, Tom actually forgot we had this interview in our archives! It's definitely worth a listen! And for our podcast listeners, Christopher has a very special tribute to the late Burt Bacharach, the musical genius behind dozens of hits that spanned decades. Bacharach passed away on Feb 8, 2023 at the age of 94. Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 70 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, Newstalk 1290 London, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville.
Pat and Lisa look back at the hit songs from the late great Burt Bacharach. And Pat is super sad, as a man, that Raquel Welch has passed away. And what makes a “good kisser”? Best selling poster of all time? The answer may surprise you! The Superbowl Tubi commercial …

As a young adult Burt Bacharach used fake IDs to get into 52nd Street jazz clubs to have his mind blown away by heroes of the bebop revolution like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Those early impressions could not but leave a mark in his sophisticated pop songs, seeds that would later make those very same songs blossom in the hands of jazz players, going full circle. As a composer and songwriter he had a remarkable gift for combining simplicity and complexity, the African roots of jazz R&B and soul with the European classical influences of French impressionism. The result were the unforgettable melodies he was admired for, many of which are featured in this playlist, as interpreted by a wide ranging of progressive musicians. The playlist features Larry Goldings, Harry Allen; Toots Thielemans; Gabor Szabo; Isaac Hayes; Dee Dee Bridgewater; Charles Lloyd; Bill Frisell; Dionne Farris, Charlie Hunter; Steve Kuhn; Marie Mcauliffe; Benjamin Koppel. Detailed playlist at https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/17011710/Mondo-Jazz (from "The Look of Love" onward). Happy listening!
George Jones [00:22] "Time Changes Everything" The Race Is On United Artists UAS 6422 1965 A very George Jones take on this Bob Wills/Tommy Duncan classic. Nadja [03:58] "Now I Am Become Death, Destroyer of Worlds" Radiance of Shadows Conspiracy Records CORE064 2008 My gateway drug for Nadja. I had read a review of this album which mentioned a new concept to me: ambient doom. I ordered the CD and the next thing I knew I was hooked. Fifteen years later I am still enthralled. Big Star [25:39] "O My Soul" Radio City Big Beat Records WIK 54 1986 (original release Ardent ADS-1501 1974) Mono, man! Side one track one from this outstanding follow up to their debut #1 Record. And if you've never seen the documentary Nothing Can Hurt Me (https://youtu.be/gxAbkqRGxqY), I can recommend it if you think you might be interested. Poppa John Gordy [31:15] "Tip Toe through the Tulips with Me" Ragtime Piano RCA Victor LPM-1060 1955 Yup, that's some ragtime piano all right. Made famous by Nick Lucas in an early the early talkie hit movie Gold Diggers of Broadway (https://youtu.be/0-MPTrWJ1uM). John Williams [33:12] "The Map Room: Dawn" Raiders of the Lost Ark - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Columbia JS 37373 1981 My favorite scene from the film, and favorite music cue of the soundtrack. Tom Waits [37:09] "Tango Till They're Sore" Rain Dogs Island Records 90299-1 1985 The album that was my gateway to the world of Tom Waits. B.J. Thomas [41:27] "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head Scepter Records SKAO 93045 1969 Fare thee well, Burt Bacharach. For those of you who prefer streaming music services, you'll find this song under B.J. Thomas, not Burt Bacharach or the Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid soundtrack. The more you know. Nat King Cole [44:31] "Your Cheatin' Heart" Ramblin' Rose Capitol Records ST-1793 1965 (orignal release 1962) Perhaps Nat was taking a cue from Ray Charles' Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music? Jimmy Buffett [46:59] "Rancho Deluxe (End Title)" Rancho Deluxe United Artists Records UA-LA466 1975 I actually dig this soundtrack quite a bit. The film is a neo-western with a script by Tom McGuane. It is very much of its time, but if you can get past that, there are some excellent performances from Harry Dean Stanton, Slim Pickens, and Charlene Dallas. And you can see Jimmy Buffett and band performing in a bar scene that features Jeff Bridges and Harry Dean Stanton playing Pong (https://youtu.be/d_p4NsgH05E). Music behind the DJ: "Tumblin' Tumbleweeds" by Lawrence Welk
Burt Bacharach was one of the most prolific song writers of the Golden Days of Radio. He was born on May 12, 1928 and passed away earlier this month on February 8, 2023.
There are advantages to being one's own boss, and one of those is that when Frau Corona (AKA Madame Covid) comes to visit, one can reshuffle and recalibrate one's plans to fit the exigencies of the moment. Hence today's episode, a watered-down version of the larger topic (Black Emigré Pop Singers) which I intended to address today. Instead, I offer you many of your favorite Black pop artists of the 1950s and 1960s performing songs in German. Some of these are versions of chart toppers with new German words; some of them are songs specifically composed for these artists for the German market. The common variable of these songs, whether they are known or unknown, is that they are all delightful, and that one of those delights is seeing how these artists come to terms with the difficulties of the German language. Featured are jazz singers (Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald), pop groups (The Supremes, The Temptations) and solo artists (Nat King Cole, Marvin Gaye, Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, and Dionne Warwick). Ms. Warwick is further featured in a number of less-familiar classics by the late Burt Bacharach which she recorded not only in German, but also in French and Italian. (Say it with me now: Geh'! Geh'!… Geh'! Geh'!) Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford. Bonus episodes available exclusively to Patreon supporters are currently available and further bonus content including interviews and livestreams is planned for the upcoming season.

We remember composer and arranger Burt Bacharach, who died last week at 94. Bacharach, along with lyricist Hal David, created dozens of pop hits of the '60s and early '70s. He was known for his rhythmically sophisticated and catchy pop songs, like The Look of Love, Do You Know the Way to San Jose, Walk on By, Anyone Who Had a Heart, Don't Make Me Over, Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, I Say a Little Prayer, and Alfie. We'll listen back to two of our interviews. One with Bacharach and lyricist Hal David. The other with Bacharach and Elvis Costello. They wrote many songs together.

The very worst Super Bowl Halftime Shows, Tom Mazawey previews the big game, RIP Burt Bacharach, a new hit for Linda Ronstadt, a brand-new Bonerline, E-Scooter madness in Detroit and a failed Britney Spears intervention. Rasmus Andersson got ran over by a scooter in Detroit. China has a strong balloon game. Even the Super Bowl is worried about their balloons. For all the talk of walking and chewing gum vis-a-vis America's looming threats to national security, have you ever asked whether China is the walking part or the chewing gum? Elbridge Colby has. Our hosts get into lousy speeches and wonder if ChatGPT could make for an improvement; plus they say farewell to the essential Burt Bacharach. Learn more about your ad choices.
