This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpet composer, performer and producer Gabriel Johnson, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Gabriel Johnson Trumpet Interview" And, find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here --- Gabriel Johnson went to the Monterey Jazz Festival at 9 years old - by himself - and witnessed Dizzy Gillespie and Freddie Hubbard on stage. He went home, switched instruments to the trumpet, and the rest is history. Gabe learned to play the trumpet by ear, playing along to Miles Davis, learning "the excitement inside the sadness." A glimmer of hope for Gabe during a difficult childhood. Self taught until later in high school, it wasn't until he was at the New England Conservatory when he learned that what seemed second-nature all along was in fact perfect pitch. A chance encounter with Chris Botti on Gabe's last night in Boston before moving to Los Angeles led to a friendship of over 20 years, and pivotal connections including meeting the manager of Blood, Sweat & Tears, who invited him to be the band's musical director for a year. From hanging out with Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford, to learning recording techniques and producer psychology from David Foster, Gabe has built a remarkable career full of originality and spontaneity, covering soundtracks, jazz, pop and more. With AI creeping into musicians' livelihood, Gabriel has some pertinent advice: individual artist expression is something that can never be replicated, whether by artificial intelligence or another human. Be yourself, be creative, be original. The rest will follow. About Gabriel Johnson:  Gabriel Johnson is an American jazz trumpeter whose lyrical sound and deep musical fluency have earned praise from artists, including David Foster, Clint Eastwood, and Chris Botti.  Gabe studied at New England Conservatory and then moved to Los Angeles and built a wide ranging career as a solo artist, session musician and featured performer. Recording and performing with artists such as Gladys Knight, Steven Tyler, David Foster, Chris Botti , Andrea Bocelli, Lyle Lovett, and Burt Bacharach, he was featured by Clint Eastwood as a trumpet soloist on the film scores for Changeling and Invictus, and has released a substantial catalog of recordings on his Sunset Horn label, blending jazz tradition with cinematic electronic and modern production influences. TVC 734.1: Part 2 of a conversation that began last week with music journalist A. Scott Galloway about the life and legacy of producer, composer, arranger, and musician Quincy Jones. Scott not only interviewed Jones at the time of the release of Jones' album Q's Jook Joint, but also wrote the liner notes for three other Jones music releases (including The Reel Quincy Jones, a compilation of scores from Jones' early years as a composer for film and television), plus he crossed paths with Q on many other occasions during the last thirty years of Jones' life. Quincy Jones passed away on Nov. 3, 2024. Topics this segment include how Jones, Burt Bacharach, and Charles Fox were among the many composers who studied music in France under legendary teacher and conductor Nadia Boulanger; what made Jones a "people groover"; and the full-circle moment when Scott was able to introduce his father to Q, many years after Scott's dad had introduced the music of Jones to him.

Hello my friends and welcome to another edition of my vinyl show. This installment revolves around my Frank Sinatra 45 collection. Some of my favorite old pieces and live performances. Sure, some of them sound terrible but get over it. I really enjoy them and it's what I wanted to do ova hea now for this episode. It did run a little short this week but I didn't want to play every Sinatra record or dig too deep into the Tony Bennett bag. Once I get to a certain spot in the Bennett bag you know Dean Martin and Jerry Vale's greatest hits will enter the chat and by that point it's all over. The Close To You mashup I expanded this episode to contain the Sinatra, Stevie Wonder talkbox live, Frank Ocean on vinyl and one of Ocean's live performances of the song from a few years back. As much as I like Burt Bacharach, the original version of the song is absolute garbage and will never see the light of day in my mashup. Sorry, Burt. The poor unassuming people have no idea that I'm publishing this podcast, putting on a sick hoochie daddy fit and I plan on kicking the door down at this card show. Taking the place by storm. No prisoners no mercy. Today I happily expand my Pokemon portfolio as a 33 year old man with no friends and absolutely no hint of a love life. Getting ready for this card show all I hear in my head is Russell Crowe. "Three weeks from now, I will be harvesting my crops. Imagine where you will be, and it will be so. Hold the line. Stay with me. If you find yourself alone, riding in green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium and you are already dead. Brothers.. What we do in life.. Echoes in eternity." Maybe I'll be a super sick internet disc jockey forever in Elysium's comparative platforms to the interwebs. Maybe I'll forever be a super sick bro that totally crushes the local card scene of the Everafter. Not selling, but I am bringing some old stuff from my childhood to show the Brodie that works at the store. Just showing up to gloat my KD, Harden and Steph rookies. Some Jordan inserts. Whatever. I couldn't be more fired up about it. Hope you enjoyed the Frank The Tank installment, your favorite internet disc jockey will be here next timeThe Captain Kirk of this Enterprise,Throbert Duvall

I've long claimed The Mavericks to be my favorite live band, in large part due to Raul's stunning vocals and guitar work. There will never be another and he will be missed deeply. Let his music live on.......RIP........

We are back for our FIFTH SEASON!!! Can you believe that we've been at this for five years now??? I know we can't, but we have 58 episodes where we've paired pot with 117 movies as evidence here. Our earliest film was Georges Méliès' "The Infernal Caudron" from 1903, and our most recent is "Hanky Panky" from 2023. That's getting up on three years old now? Does that count as vintage in tubi years? But enough of our unexpected achievements. We've got our 59th episode right here, and with Valentine's Day just around the corner, we're exploring human sexuality with a pair of films that Philena describes as "more gross than romantic." Everything about BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE (1969) screams the 60s, from Robert Culp in love beads right down to a Burt Bacharach song closing it out, but our crew found it's definitely worth a look as so many people are trying out polyamory with the same level of awkward as our film's titular couple. Plus Robert Culp and Natalie Wood smoke weed like pros Definitely stay tuned for Philena's title for a queer remake that she should really get crackin' on writing! The film also stars Ryan Cannon and Elliot Gould. How is it that Gould is making his Old Movies for Young Stoners debut just now??? BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE is streaming on the Criterion and Roku Channels. Since we featured one of Mexico's most spectacularly-bad films in our last episode with the baffling SANTA CLAUS (1959), Bob felt it was time we explored the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema (1930-1960) with VICTIMS OF SIN (1951), a prime example of the Rumberas genre, a unique combination of musical, noir and intense melodrama. In fact, the emotions may have burned a bit too hot for some of our hosts. Ninón Sevilla is a dancer at the Club Changoo in Mexico City whose life goes to hell after she rescues a baby from a trash can. Directed by the great Emilio Fernández who was the John Huston or Kurosawa of Mexico's Golden Age, but is best known to gringos for playing the Mexican warlord Mapache in Sam Peckinpah's THE WILD BUNCH (1969). Legend also has it that Fernández was the sculptor's model for the Oscar statuette when he was chilling with Dolores del Río in Hollywood after he was a part of a failed rebellion in Mexico and had to flee to the United States for a while. The contrast of light and shadows of Gabriel Figueroa's cinematography are the equal of anything seen in the best American noirs. VICTIMS OF SIN is now streaming on Criterion Channel. Cory, Bob and Greg begin the show by talking about the pending closures of The Bottom of the Hill and Thee Parkside, two San Francisco punk clubs that they have all played and see a lot of shows at. The conversation brings up the Canadian rock god Thor, which is always welcome. Bottom of the Hill closes at the end of 2026, so please check out a show or ten there while you still can. https://www.bottomofthehill.com/calendar.html And Philena was not one of the influencers invited to screenings of the "Wuthering Heights," which really seems like an oversight by the Warner Bros publicity team if you ask us. What's your most loved and least favourite song on the Oasis b-sides collection the Masterplan? FINALLY, our long awaited Oasis episode and Jim threw us a curveball choosing this collection with some of his favorite Gallagher tunes. SHIELDS UP as he takes on two non-fans for a fookin' Brit battle. Adam was the singer of North America's first(?) Oasis coverband, the short-lived parody the Fookin' Wankers, but he loves taking the piss, so he and Dan cranked up the willpower trying not to buzzkill Jim's superfandom TOO badly. Lots of fun show tales from San Francisco's tiny, infamous Britpop royalty/meth supply show to their biblical Rose Bowl reunion gathering. In our latest tribute, Janet, John, (and Pen) celebrate the life and career of an extremely talented musical genius who wrote some of the most iconic and enduring songs of the 20th century... Burt Baharach! Born in Kansas City, Missouri on May 12th, 1928, Burt seemed to be destined for greatness. Encouraged by his amateur painter and songwriting mother, Burt took up practicing piano, drums, and the cello during his childhood. Using his musical gift, Bacharach continued his education at McGill University in Montreal, Mannes School of Music, and the Musica Academy of the West studying all kinds of music. At the age of 28, he was reccomended to Marlene Dietrich (fun fact: the star our logo is modeled after!) by Peter Matz as she needed an arranger and condutor for her nightclub shows. After becoming her part-time musical director, Baharach and Dietrich toured worldwide together, on and off, until the early 1960s. Eventually this musical genius met Hal David and Dionne Warwick. This trio would make songs that would sell over 12 million copies and have 39 consecutive chart hits. Some of those songs being "Anyone Who Had a Heart" (1963), "Walk On By" (1964), "Message to Michael" (1966), "I Say a Little Prayer" (1967), "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" (1968), "This Girl's in Love with You" (1969) and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" (1969). Eventually this composer moved towards creating scores for film such Casino Royale (1967) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), which won them a Academy Award, an Oscar, and a Grammy for best score. In his lifetime, Burt would go onto to creating many wonderful songs, gain many nominations, and win many awards for his absolutely outstanding music.  To learn more about this episode and others, visit the official Cinema Sounds & Secrets website!

Oprah sits down with Carole Bayer Sager, the Grammy-, Golden Globe- and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter and painter, to discuss her legendary career. Carole shares the stories behind some of her biggest songs, including "That's What Friends Are For" and "The Prayer." One of the most prolific writers in pop history, Carole has worked with numerous legendary performers, such as Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Stevie Wonder. In her memoir, "They're Playing Our Song," Carole reflects on her spiritual journey both in and out of the recording studio, including her decadelong marriage to, and painful divorce from, composer and singer Burt Bacharach. She opens up about how her mother's harsh criticism of her weight led to lifelong emotional insecurity. Nevertheless, Carole says she found healing in her songwriting and believes that her life's purpose has always been to touch others' hearts through her work and to help them feel connected and less alone. Welcome to the final episode of Jazzism (a katzpheno mix) for 2025. On this episode we celebrate life, the beauty, the struggle, and the joy of it all. Though a year is full of change we reflect on those aspects of change in our lives that were positive. We focus now on those aspects of change that helped us to grow, that gave us deeper knowledge of ourselves and the world around us, that taught us to share with one another, and to love each other more.  "What the world needs now is love sweet love, that's the only thing that there's just too little of." Burt Bacharach and Hal David penned those insightful lyrics and put it to beautiful music with an unforgettable melody sixty years ago, and it's just as true now as it was then.  In my mind it's so obviously true the world needs more love. The killings and the wars and the bombings and the starvation has to stop. Love can do it. With his B.A. under his belt, Bluestein headed west and wound up in San Francisco, where he spent a decade putting out his own music and working as a venerated sideman and session player with Jon Evans, Will Bernard, Matt Chamberlain, Kitty Margolis, Kenny Washington and Mary Stallings. He has toured and recorded with Shelby Lynn, Boz Scaggs, Stevie Nicks, Burt Bacharach, Enrique Iglesias and Rodger Hodgson. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Elvis Costello. ABOUT ELVIS COSTELLOReleased between 1977 and 1979, Elvis Costello's first three albums—My Aim is True, This Year's Model, and Armed Forces—were all included in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. That early period of his recording career yielded now-classic singles such as “Alison,” “Watching the Detectives,” “Pump it Up,” “Radio Radio,” “Oliver's Army,” “Accidents Will Happen,” and others.Though he established his career as a rock artist and reached commercial heights in the US with the pop hit “Everyday I Write the Book,” Costello's more than thirty studio albums cover a breathtaking range of stylistic ground, from Almost Blue, his early 1980s album of country covers, to The Juliet Letters, his 1993 collaboration with The Brodsky Quartet, to North, an album of ballads partially inspired by his wife Diana Krall that topped Billboard's Jazz chart in 2003, to Il Sogno, his first full-length orchestral work, which was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, and topped Billboard's classical chart in 2004, to Wise Up Ghost, a 2013 collaboration with Questlove and The Roots. In between, he's continued to release albums both solo and with his bands The Attractions, The Imposters, and The Sugarcanes. Always an adventurous collaborator, Costello entered into a fruitful songwriting partnership with Paul McCartney that yielded more than a dozen songs, including Costello's Top 10 single “Veronica” and McCartney's “My Brave Face.” He went on to release entire collaborative albums with Richard Harvey, Burt Bacharach, Allen Toussaint, and others. He has written lyrics for compositions by Charles Mingus, Billy Strayhorn and Oscar Peterson, as well as musical settings for lyrics by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. His songs have been covered by a range of artists including George Jones, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, and Solomon Burke. Costello has been nominated for fourteen Grammy awards, two of which he won, as well as an Academy Award for co-writing “The Scarlet Tide” with T-Bone Burnett for the film Cold Mountain. He has received two Ivor Novello awards for Songwriting, the Americana Music Association's Lifetime Achievement in Songwriting award, and the ASCAP Founder's Award, which was presented by Burt Bacharach. He was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and was named one of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine. His genre-stretching new album, Hey Clockface, was recorded in Helsinki and Paris, and was released on October 30.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Discograffiti is the deep-dive podcast for music obsessives. In this episode, we feature the next entry in The Chuck Granata Pet Sounds Interview Series. It's Chuck's chat with legendary producer Phil Ramone, Billy Joel's most relied-upon right-hand-man, the producer of every Billy Joel record during the height of his popularity, from 1977's The Stranger to 1986's The Bridge. Phil won his first production Grammy for his work on Paul Simon's Still Crazy After All These Years in 1975, eventually becoming chairman of The Recording Academy. He also helped produce, with Quincy Jones, 2001's televised A Tribute To Brian Wilson. His credits and accomplishments in the industry are almost literally endless, and what better place to learn about them than Chuck Granata's 2007 memoir (co-written with Phil) Making Records: The Scenes Behind The Music. Phil passed away a few years after this interview in 2013, which makes this posthumously released “Chuck Chat” yet another priceless buried treasure.   Here are just a few of the many things that Phil discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast: The dysfunctional Wilson family dynamic, which Phil talks about with great candor; Digging into the history of harmony, and the experience of working with The Beach Boys on Chicago's “Wishing You Were Here”; Working with Burt Bacharach, and Phil's transition from engineer to producer; The differences between east coast and west coast records in the 1960s & 1970s; The Nylon Curtain's debt to both The Beatles & Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys; Why Elton John was nervous to perform at the Brian Wilson tribute; And stereo vs. mono with regard to hearing Pet Sounds. This week on One Hit Thunder, we're joined by special guest Mark Popeney of the Nevermind The Music podcast to discuss Naked Eyes and their 1983 hit “Always Something There to Remind Me.” Originally written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the song found new life in the synth pop era thanks to Naked Eyes' inventive production and reliance on cutting-edge technology like the Fairlight CMI. Our conversation covers the band's struggles with live performance, the emotional staying power of a great melody, and the way certain songs seem to cycle back into cultural relevance. This episode looks at a band whose music made a lasting impact, even if their moment on stage didn't come until much later. Chuck Granata's book Wouldn't It Be Nice: Brian Wilson And The Making Of The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds is the ultimate dissection of Brian Wilson's 1966 masterpiece.  Chuck and I wound up diving so deep into the record, we unfortunately had to seek treatment for the bends…thankfully it was a risk worth taking, as Discograffiti's Pet Sounds Deep-Dive Series stands as a unique combination of factual obsession and personal connection.  Episode 3 is an examination of everything you'll ever need to know about the remainder of Pet Sounds' Side 1: “Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder),” “I'm Waiting For The Day,” “Let's Go Away For Awhile,” and “Sloop John B.”Here's just a few of the many things that Chuck discusses with Discograffiti in this podcast:Brian Wilson's studio preparation for the production of “Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)”;What Brian feels is “the one cut off the album I didn't really like that much”;The Burt Bacharach song on which Brian had felt he'd subconsciously based “Let's Go Away For Awhile”;The stunning original intention for the final planned Pet Sounds session, before that date was used to knock out the entire mix of the LP;Brian's Great Bahamian Folk Song Swindle;A full half-hour interview with Sid Sharp, whose string section played on virtually all of Brian's string dates, including both Pet Sounds and "Good Vibrations” (in The Director's Cut only); And how both Chuck and I connect with “Don't Talk,” “I'm Waiting For The Day,” “Let's Go Away For Awhile,” and “Sloop John B” in a laid-bare, explicitly personal way.Listen: linktr.ee/discograffitiI support a wife and a six-year-old son with Discograffiti as my sole source of income. If you're a Beach Boys superfan like me, The Director's Cut of this episode is ad-free and features 30 additional minutes of essential material. Subscribe to Discograffiti's Patreon at the Major Tier and receive a ceaseless barrage (4 shows a week) of must-hear binge listening: Patreon.com/DiscograffitiOr just grab The Director's Cut as a one-off at the same link.CONNECTJoin our Soldiers of Sound Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1839109176272153Patreon: www.Patreon.com/DiscograffitiPodfollow: https://podfollow.com/1592182331YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClyaQCdvDelj5EiKj6IRLhwInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/discograffitipod/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Discograffiti/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DiscograffitiOrder the Digital version of the METAL MACHINE MUZAK 2xLP (feat. Today on another brand new episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast we have a first in our history. We bring you the first ever, three part episode. Our guest today is Peter Rafelson, son of director Bob Rafelson. Admittedly, we sort of lied to you on because there really wasn't going to be a third episode. But after our chat with Peter on the first two episodes, we decided there was more to discuss and we bring you the result. It's a fun one too. On this episode, we discuss Peter's remembrances of his father's favorite LA restaurants – from Dan Tana's to The Cock and Bull, Hamburger Hamlet and a mob joint at the end of Sunset whose name is lost to the mists of time. Somehow this turns into a discussion about visiting the Playboy Mansion in elementary school, dressing in drag while dining for a very specific purpose and sneaking into a nude stage production at age nine. Clearly, the Wild Child we discussed in prior episodes still has stories to tell us that will delight and amaze you. From there we learn about what kind of car his father drove and why he (and his mom) got a new one every year. Thank you Colgems! We segue from here to Peter's own career in music and a discussion about the most unlikely place he met a member of Fleetwood Mac who recorded a song of his, watching Madonna clear the hall of Teamsters before a surprise appearance on network television, meeting Prince in the rafters of a private home, playing piano alongside Burt Bacharach on a piano bench, driving Babs home after a one take recording and so much more. We really hope that our white lie was worth it and you enjoy the first ever three part interview on the Rarified Heir Podcast with Peter Rafelson. As you know, everyone has a story. This one just has three parts. Take a listen.
