One of he most unique-sounding bands to come out of the 80's and 90's, Concrete Blonde layered stylish guitar licks with utter powerhouse vocals. Their originals were powerful, their covers were more often than not better than the original. Bruce Moreland grew up in West Covina California, playing in glam rock bands with his brother Marc before diving into LA's punk scene in the late '70s. He hung around The Masque, played bass for The Weirdos, and co-founded Wall of Voodoo, recording on most of their albums between stints in and out of the band. He later formed Black Cherry, played with Nervous Gender, and co-wrote a track for Concrete Blonde. After Marc's death, he started Ravens Moreland, shifting to vocals and guitar.
Today's guest was bound to happen. Meet Tex Mosely from Neverland Ranch Davidians. Tex and his band were suggested to me a couple of years ago by my friend Ian. I reached out and we tried to get everything to mesh but just couldn't make it work. A few years later, here we are. Tex talks about growing up in Philly and having music all around him. His uncle was a professional bass player. Tex started playing guitar and even took lessons from jazz legend, Pat Martino! He began his life in music in Philly, but he eventually found his way to LA. He joined up with The Slaves and found favor with Concrete Blonde, one of my favorite bands. But after a while, rock and roll and substance abuse took its toll on him. But he found help, love, and safety back with his family in Philly. After his recovery, Tex moved back to LA and joined a band called Neighborhood Bullys. They had such a good sound that they ended up being Suzi Quatro's band for her album In The Spotlight. But there's one odd thing about that recording and I'll let Tex tell that story. Tex's latest band is Neverland Ranch Davidians. It started off as a lo-fi project and wound up being his singing debut. He tells how he met the other band members, Max Hagen and Will Bentley and how he came up with the band name. Their sophomore release is out soon and it's an amalgamation of all Tex's influences (except maybe Pat Martino). It's called Shout It On The Mountain and that title tells it all. It's a rock album. That's it. Tex is a blast to talk with and shares great stories from his early days through the making of the new album. Pre-order it on Heavy Medication Records, buy the debut, and follow Neverland Ranch Davidians on the socials. You can't miss them. Follow us @PerformanceAnx, buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com and send money through ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. It's not every day that we at What the Riff?!? review a rap album, but the Beastie Boys aren't your every day rap group either. Hailing from New York City, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, Adam “MCA” Yauch, and Michael “Mike D” Diamond came out of an experimental hardcore punk band (think “punk” but faster) called The Young Aborigines. After changing their name to the Beastie Boys, they saw some local success from a comedy hip hop single based on a prank call to a Carvel Ice Cream franchise. They then began to incorporate more rap and hip hop into their sets, and ended up connecting with Rick Rubin, who formed Def Jam Recordings with Russell Simmons. Many of their songs were locally distributed, and led to uncomfortable situations when three white guys would show up to perform for a mostly black audience that had heard their music but never saw the group. Their courage and live performance skills won the audience over.Shortly after supporting Madonna as an opening act on the Virgin Tour in 1985, the band recorded their debut studio and breakthrough album, Licensed to Ill. It was released by Def Jam and Columbia Records, and became one of Columbia Records' fastest-selling debut records, and had shipped over ten million copies in the United states by 2015. It was also a critical success, and was selected as one of "The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums." It was hailed for hits stylized rapping, and its combination of hip hop and punk sensibilities. The Beastie Boys would go on to greater heights of stardom in the mid to late 90's as they moved in a more alternative direction, but this is where it all started.Lynch brings us this illin' record for today's podcast. No Sleep Till BrooklynThe song that opens side 2 is inspired by an exhausting tour, and it chronicles many of the events that wear the band out along with their determination to not rest until they get back home to Brooklyn. It is often the closing song at their concerts. It also features a solo guitar riff by Kerry King of the heavy metal band Slayer. Paul RevereThis song is a fictionalized account of how the Beastie Boys met. It was inspired by an incident when they encountered Joseph Simmons aka "Run" of Run-D.M.C. in a recording studio. It features a reversed beat from an 808 drum machine.Hold It Now, Hit ItThis was the first single to be released from the album, and was ranked number 27 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop. The video switches between concert footage, and the band lip synching in front of a fish-eye lens. Brass MonkeyThis is a later-produced song that takes its name from an alcoholic drink by the Heublein Company. It samples Wild Sugar's “Bring It Here” in the song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:If I Only Had A Brain by Ray Bolger and Judy Garland (from the motion picture “The Wizard of Oz”)Actor, dancer, and singer Ray Bolger who played the scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz” died in January of 1987. STAFF PICKS:Still In Hollywood by Concrete BlondeWayne kicks off the staff picks with the debut single from American alternative rock group Concrete Blonde's first and self-titled album. This post-punk sound was bubbling up in the LA street scene at the time, and the lyrics portray a life in Hollywood where the town drags you down. Right Next Door (Because of Me) by Robert CrayBruce's staff pick is a song off Robert Cray's fifth studio album, “Strong Persuader.” The lyrics chronicle an infidelity breaking up a marriage as told from the man who had an affair with the next door wife. Cray played with a number of artists, and was at the final concert with Stevie Ray Vaughan before his death in a helicopter crash. Too Hot to Stop by Benjamin OrrRob brings us a solo single from the second vocalist of The Cars. This keyboard-heavy piece was off Orr's only solo album entitled “The Lace.” After they released their Greatest Hits album in 1985, The Cars briefly split up to pursue solo projects, and both Orr and Ocasek hit the charts.Land of Confusion by GenesisLynch closes out the staff picks with a rare political track from Genesis that questions global leadership and the threat of nuclear war during the cold war era. It is famous for its video which uses puppets from Peter Fluck and Roger Law caricaturing political figures of the time, and the band members themselves. COMEDY TRACK:Ronnie's Rap by Ron and the DC CrewRonald Reagan was a hot commodity for comedy in 1987, as this satirical rap shows. In Episode 159 of PopCultX, Danny and Gabriel delve deep into vampire culture in pop culture. The episode kicks off with a look at music inspired by vampires, featuring tracks like Annie Lennox's haunting song from the Bram Stoker's Dracula soundtrack and Concrete Blonde's “Bloodletting (The Vampire Song).” They also dive into a detailed appreciation of Bram Stoker's Dracula—the book, the film adaptation, and its far-reaching influence on vampire lore in modern cinema. The conversation then shifts to vampire films, touching on classics like Fright Night and The Lost Boys, as well as exploring hypothetical scenarios inspired by movies like Daybreakers and Interview with the Vampire. Gabriel and Danny debate what would happen if the vampire food supply (human blood) ran out, and whether vampires would resort to farming humans or hunting animals. The duo also highlights the resurgence of vampire themes in comics and literature, with mentions of The Historian and a deeper dive into vampire culture, including real-life vampire subcultures in places like New Orleans. The episode closes with discussions on Halloween plans, horror TV shows like What We Do in the Shadows, and reflections on the Puff Daddy controversy in the entertainment industry, comparing power dynamics to vampires preying on their victims. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcultx/support

He tells us about meeting the band, their early days on the road, and the difficulty selling the rock press on the band despite their growing popularity. Learn more about your ad choices. Along with drummer Brianna Sig and bassist Travis Smith (both musical and visual artists in their own right), ZouZou is the dynamic lead singer and lyricist of Philadelphia's rock band Soraia. Among other artists, ZouZou has co-written songs with Steven Van Zandt and Jon Bon Jovi.Join Charles and Doug as we explore these and other topics with ZouZou:- What was ZouZou's first concert?- What artist influenced ZouZou to change the course of her career?- What happened when she and her band met Alice Cooper backstage at a Bruce Springsteen concert?- What is it like to work with Steven Van Zandt?- What is Soraia's methodology for naming their albums?- What influenced the naming of their “Bloom” album?- Why is ZouZou attracted to the horror genre?- Why does Soraia like to record cover songs?- What is the Soraia “Vault”?- Why does ZouZou love hot dogs? The discussion charts ZouZou's musical journey, beginning with her early concert experiences seeing Hall and Oates to a transformative Iggy Pop performance that reshaped her artistic approach. We delve into Soraia's unique blend of 90s influences and 60s garage rock, their evolution over three impactful albums produced under Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records, and the band's dedicated fan base. ZouZou shares insights into her songwriting process, the raw, uninhibited spirit of rock and roll, and her penchant for horror-themed music videos. Fans can also look forward to Soraia's re-release of 'Shed the Skin' on vinyl and upcoming shows. Andy Prieboy in conversation with David Eastaugh https://wallofvoodoo2.com/home https://www.andyprieboy.com/home In early 1984, he was invited to join Wall of Voodoo, occupying the vacated front-person position. Touring the world and recording three albums with the band, his composition Far Side of Crazy charted in foreign markets, going top ten in Australia. In the early 1990's, his solo work featured Tomorrow Wendy, covered by Concrete Blonde on their Bloodletting album. In addition, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt performed Loving the Highway Man as a duet on their Western Wall album. By the middle of the decade, he was writing, directing, and performing his acclaimed musical, White Trash Wins Lotto, a Gilbert and Hooligan take on the Guns n' Roses story. Between 1995 and 2001, White Trash Wins Lotto successfully ran at Largo and The Roxy Theater in Los Angeles. It was also featured at The HBO Comedy Festival, New York's PS 122, and on Conan O'Brien. In 2004, Andy co-authored a novel The Psycho-Ex Game with Emmy Award-winning writer Merrill Markoe for Random House. After taking time out to compose, Andy returned to the stage to present an autobiographical song cycle called A Thousand Gorgeous Lies at The Harold Williams Theatre at The Getty Center in Los Angeles. Most recently, Andy has been working on this collection of forgotten, abandoned, and unfinished songs which he calls "One and One Make Three."

Everyone has heard of Leonard Cohen, but not so many know much about him. With this episode, we look to give you a taste of Mr Cohen – his views on life, women and songwriting; his extraordinary influence on modern songwriting; his legacy, and, of course, “Hallelujah”! A world that never had Leonard Cohen in it would be a much lesser place indeed. Jeff gives us his holiday report on a visit to the only Museum in the world dedicated to penises, whose prime exhibit is a plaster cast of Jimi Hendrix' tackle. (It's true!!) We give an update on our Ed Kuepper episode, with a report on his live concert in Sydney in September, which was fantastic! We take a quick look at a few of the icons we've lost so far this year including Tom Verlaine (Television), Burt Bacharach, Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Francis Monkman (Sky, 801), and Sinead O'Connor. In honour of Sinead, our Album You Must Hear Before You Die is her “I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got” (1990), which we both agree is an absolute cracker of an album. Haven't heard it? Cary Baker was a Chicago music writer and fanzine creator who made a good impression on R.E.M. and wound up running publicity for the band and its label, I.R.S. Records. There he also worked with the Go-Go's, General Public, Fine Young Cannibals, the Alarm, Concrete Blonde and Timbuk 3, whom he got booked onto Saturday Night Live. After R.E.M. left the label, Baker did too, moving to Capitol Records and working with Paul McCartney, Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, the Smithereens and other big names. Eventually he formed his own firm, Conqueroo (a Chicago blues reference), and represented acts including the one that changed his life as a college student: Cheap Trick. Baker recently retired after 42 years of adventures in the publicity game, and he has stories to tell.

Listening back to it now, it's hard to believe that Bad Religion's seventh studio album - 1993s 'Recipe For Hate' - was at the time considered a polarizing record that many hardcore fans felt was a sell-out. 30 years later, it's clear this was a band at the top of their game - maturing and expanding musically while still delivering ferociously intelligent songs about class, religion and navigating a treacherous path towards the 21st century. Our guest, personal trainer and Taekwon-Do Studio owner Aaron Fruitstone, makes the case that their brand of cerebral punk is as presciently valid now as it was when he was an angry teen. "Well madness reigned and paradise drowned When Babel's walls came crashing down Now the echoes roar for a story writ That was hardly understood And never any good." Songs featured in this episode: Recipe For Hate (Live Hollywood Palladium, 2004) - Bad Religion; Strike First - Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson; No Control, Only Entertainment - Bad Religion; White Riot - The Clash; Commando - Ramones; Recipe For Hate, Kerosene - Bad Religion; Vigil Smile - Claw Hammer; American Jesus - Bad Religion; Porch - Pearl Jam; Portrait Of Authority - Bad Religion; House Of Wolves - My Chemical Romance; Wichita - Karen Landau and Greg Leisz; Man With A Mission, All Good Soldiers, Watch It Die - Bad Religion; Still In Hollywood - Concrete Blonde; Struck A Nerve - Bad Religion; Harder Than You Think - Public Enemy; My Poor Friend Me - Bad Religion; Growing Up - Fall Out Boy; Lookin' In - Bad Religion; Kids Of The Black Hole - Adolescents; Don't Pray On Me - Bad Religion; Sorrow - Greg Graffin (Live acoustic); Modern Day Catastrophists, Skyscraper, Stealth, Skyscraper (Piano version) - Bad Religion
Listen to Gobbledygeek and live forever. This week, in a stealth continuation of this year's Gobbledyween, Paul and Arlo head on down to New Orleans for Neil Jordan's 1994 adaptation of Anne Rice's classic Interview with the Vampire. Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Antonio Banderas are the most beautiful men anyone could have cast as immortals in the mid-'90s, and they're joined by a prepubescent Kirsten Dunst to form a truly tragic coven. The boys discuss the evil joyfulness of Cruise's Lestat, why the role of Louis de Pointe du Lac does not play to Pitt's strengths, how amazing it is that the film's overt homoeroticism made it to the screen, and much more. Plus, yoghurt. NEXT: we'll be back in two weeks to discuss season 2 of Reservation Dogs. Episode 105 Notes: Sometimes life gets in the way and you are a month late posting the podcast. And then you realize that your original notes were deleted. It's honestly a shame because I feel like this was one of the better ones. I can barely remember recording this, however, and may just be thinking of an especially tasty snack. As memory serves, we get into a discussion regarding the (non) existence of buttholes and the band “Concrete Blonde”. Coincidentally, the day we actually recorded (May 15) was the 32nd anniversary of that album. TrippyWe also had a topic (Most disturbing thing in a movie), and get into the usual nonsense (Spoiler: The Pentaverate is NOT GOOD)Anyway, we will probably be back with a “Main feed” podcast in August, and I will throw a few things out there as well. Songs featured in Episode 105:“Commander In Chief” – Crisis Man“West Virginia” – The Builders and the Butchers“The Reckoning” – Cave in“The Jacket” - Widowspeak
