"Sonically good without the sonic soul is crap!" Michael talked about why it's the emotional stuff, not the technical stuff that makes a great mix, how to understand multi-bus mix compression, why plugins are fun, and mixing in Atmos on headphones. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Michael Brauer a Grammy-winning New York mix engineer. His many credits include "Best Pop Vocal Album" for John Mayer's Continuum, "Best Alternative Album" for Coldplay's Parachutes, and also "Best Rock Album" for Coldplay's "Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends". He also invented the technique known as 'Brauerizing', in which mixes are routed through multiple compressors and busses to create a blended sound. And he is a co-founder of Mix With The Masters which has been running for over a decade. Michael has been a guest on the show previously to talk about his background in music and mixing so please chack out that episode at RSR300. And at that time he had relocated outside the heart of the city in NY to settle into his home studio for mixing. He also completed his journey of migrating his mix template over from a hybrid setup to a full “in the box” method with the help of his engineer Fernando Reyes. Michael created a fantastic course on Puremix.net called Brauerize ITB to teach his mixing setup so you can recreate the whole thing in your home studio if you choose. So I am excited to have Michael joining us to talk about his philosophy of mixing and the migration over to mixing “in the box”. "Does it go to eleven?" Paul talked about why level matching sucks for a real studio session, Recreating classic doubler and flanger plugins, designing immersive analog consoles, and why you should mix in 7.4.1. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Paul Wolff. In his own words - “In 1972, I was hanging out at a local TV shop, a guy comes in with a Strat with "no sound". The shop owner had no clue, I pulled the jack out and fixed it, the guitar player said "from now on, your name will be FIX…". That was the beginning of my course on the road to the studio to designing. Both parents were in Big Bands during the 40's, and later my Father was a civil engineer and my mother was a custom jeweler. A club in Washington DC called the Bayou, I did FOH for such bands as Foreigner, Dire Straits, Pat Benatar, etc. I was the FOH for many showcase bands attempting to get signed. In June of 1985, I was offered API at a very low price because the current owners wanted to trim the assets so sell the whole company. I purchased the company and opened in a 20X30 foot office, and received a phone call from a guy named Shelly Yakus, looking for API 560 equalizers. Shelly was my first customer and has remained a good friend since. We were a company that grew without any kind of credit line, as we were self funded. Later I sold API and In 2005 I started Tonelux and then in 2012 started FIX Audio Designs, LLC, to make consoles again…. The current product line includes a Stereo input module, a 5.1 input module and an Immersive input module with Object Sends. I am currently the only company in the world making analog Immersive consoles. The console can be fitted with any op-amp/transformer combination to get any console tone you desire. The Stereo input module allows you to choose 3 different tones, and each of the 3 mix busses can have any op amp transformer. The stereo module also has a DAW monitor loop, much like an inline console. I have also designed products like the Tony Shepperd/A-Designs MIX Factory, The Sunset Sound Tutti Mic Pre, A Lindell input module with EQ and a compressor, Analog Alien EPI universal pedal interface, the Slate VMS1 Mic Pre, the Slate Control monitor system, The new Slate Audio Monitor system, and was involved in the new Slate Audio VSX headphone system.” THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS! https://UltimateMixingMasterclass.com https://www.solidstatelogic.com https://www.Spectra1964.com https://MacSales.com/rockstars https://iZotope.com/Rockstars use code ROCK10 to get 10% off any individual plugin https://jzmic.com use code ROCKSTAR to get 40% off the Vintage series mics https://www.adam-audio.com https://RecordingStudioRockstars.com/Academy Use code ROCKSTAR to get 10% off https://www.thetoyboxstudio.com/ Listen to this guest's discography on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0U3xwZZqeCHTo8pckGLoXF?si=ba14d6aa77f4485a If you love the podcast, then please leave a review: https://RSRockstars.com/Review CLICK HERE FOR COMPLETE SHOW NOTES AT: https://RSRockstars.com/387

Can you really get kicked off an island? Joe shared stories of early band memories with Lij Shaw, recording to a double cassette deck and microphone, capturing great drum, bass, and guitar sounds on a 4 track in a home studio and writing cool lyrics. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Joe Armin, a drummer, guitarist, and songwriter and leader of the first band I ever got to play with in St Louis a college cover band called Ayatollah Joe And The Hostages. “Joe grew up in Cincinnati, and started playing piano, drums and then guitar as a kid. He started multitracking in his basement in 4th or 5th grade. Joe got addicted to playing in bands and recording one-off tunes. In college during the mid to late 80's at Washington University in St. Louis he played music in a handful of bands, one of his first that started doing paying gigs was a covers and originals 4-piece with yours truly, Elijah Shaw. Joe & Elijah got their first studio experience while taking a recording studio course together at college. Joe's focus quickly became writing originals. By senior year he was in a band, Dirt Cousin with friend David Gendelman, cowriting songs and starting to play dive bars and music clubs throughout the St. Louis area. After graduating then moving back and forth between San Francisco and St. Louis Joe finally settled in San Francisco for good in 1994 where he currently works as an architect, while still playing gigs and recording at home. He started recording with a handful of friends under the name, The Aerosols, self-releasing a self-titled CD in 1999. The music was oftentimes noisy and spacey but pop was lurking in the darkness. It took several years for a band with a steady lineup to take form. A trio version of The Aerosols played live in the San Francisco area and beyond from the mid-2000's until Joe's future wife, Amy Fowler joined in 2010, at first on keyboards, but eventually on second guitar and backing vocals also. This 4-person lineup released an LP in 2014, Fake Mirror, containing angular psych songs which were less shy about embracing melody. Amy started her own 5-piece band, Latitude, in 2014 (with herself on guitar and vocals and with Joe on drums and backing vocals) Latitude has had a couple full-length releases, the latest, Mystic Hotline, coming out in 2020 on Emotional Response records. Meanwhile during all this time The Aerosols have continued to play live and record. They released their third full-length, the slightly more atmospheric LP, Room for Wrong, in late 2021. Over the last 14 years Joe has recorded and mixed all of The Aerosols recordings at his and Amy's home studio, Boring Basement Studios, located in San Francisco. He has also recently provided guest guitar tracks on recordings by James Goode and David Gendelman. From the vault - and with very poor sound quality - Jim and I are taking a break and reposting the conversation former host Liane Allen and I had with Emmy-winning producer Steve Benen joins about his book The Impostors: How Republicans Quit Governing and Seized American Politics, living with a post-policy Republican Party, and blogging. We talk about Steve's early days as a blogger and podcaster, what's changed about our politics since the Trump presidency, why there is reason for optimism... and since this is OWC, we also talk some sci fi and comics.
Turn it up to eleven! Weston talked about recording rock guitars, playing movies and video games in the studio while recording, committing through an analog console eq on the way into Pro Tools, and dialing in the perfect kick drum sound with Peavey. My guest today is Weston Wellman an artist engineer and music producer in Nashville TN. “I like to record bands and play music. So if you want your band recorded or enjoy listening to music, consider me an option for one, or both of those things. The louder, the weirder, the crazier, the better.” I actually met Weston through Instagram in 2021 when I got my Behringer Model D analog synth (modeled after Moog) and was so into it that I was posting and browsing IG videos of synths. Weston was also sharing some killer sounds with his synths, pedals, and cassette four-track, and making killer sounding heavy records with his band Noise Relay. It also turns out that we are connected both through Nashville and Mike Purcell over at County Q studio. Mike was actually the very first guest back on episode RSR001 so how cool is that? I'm psyched to talk to Weston today about making fantastic sounding heavy rock records with his bands Noise Relay and Sleepercab, creating wild and weird sound in the studio using guitar pedals, synths, and whatever else sounds cool. My guest today is Matt Boudreau a mix and mastering engineer for bands and solo artists. He is the producer and host of the podcast Working Class Audio interviewing other audio professionals about their journey to where they are today. Matt also tests audio software for Universal Audio as a contractor and speaks on audio panels at conferences as a moderator/and or panelist. In general, he loves anything audio-related, and also loves coffee and connecting with forward-thinking people in all industries. Matt has been involved in music and audio for 35 years starting out as a drummer working his way through bands and six-figure record deals. He was lucky to experience firsthand how records were made on a high level with producer/engineers like Larry Hirsch, Joe Chicarelli, and Gil Norton and these guys got him excited about the record-making process. In 1994 he began his journey to the “other side of the glass”; trading drum sticks for faders. That journey has taken him through a series of amazing recording experiences with many well-known artists as well as many lesser-known artists. Now Matt reaches studio fans all over the world through his podcast, is a published author, and also teaches mixing courses over at Working Class Audio. He has been on the podcast early on episode RSR053 and I am psyched to have my Brother From Another Podcast back to share some cool tips on mixing awesome pro-sounding drums using plugins and sample triggers in your DAW. My guest today is Ethan X Howard, a producer/engineer and consultant based in Nashville, TN. Ethan got his start in West Virginia, picking up recording out of necessity to record demos with local punk bands he played with while still in high school. After briefly studying music performance at Marshall University, he packed up & headed to Full Sail University to get serious about recording. Upon graduating he had the opportunity to relocate to Nashville for an internship at Blackbird Studio. In the years since he's worked as a freelance producer & engineer for developing artists, has helped start and manage several small studios, and has worked as an assistant engineer on sessions for independent & major label artists. A lifetime technology enthusiast, Ethan is currently working as a consultant focusing on NFTs, web3, and their applications within the music industry. I am psyched to have Ethan on today to talk about both making records and how the future of NFTs and web3 can help artists and producers survive on the long road toward a successful career in music.
