Sexual Education is an important topic for our kids. It's not just about teaching anatomy and where babies come from, but early sexual education reduces the risk of abuse, STI's, unwanted teen pregnancies, and also empowers our kids about their bodies. In this episode co-hosts Vanessa and Shannon discuss the book, Beyond Birds and Bees by Bonnie J. Rough and how it changed their approach to discussing this topic with their young kids. Early and open conversations about sex promotes equality and reduces shame. Have you started these conversations with your kids?

The concept of consent has been in the news a lot in recent years in the context of stories of sexual assault at high school or college parties and sexual harassment in the workplace. But, understanding consent is important long before children reach adolescence. In what ways might we be unintentionally sending the wrong message about consent? What about when we push our young child to give a hug to a visiting relative? Or what about kids horsing around by a lake and pushing another child off the dock?   These common scenes are the starting point for teaching children they have a right to say no. And, perfect opportunities for them to learn to respect the rights of others to say no to them. (And if Aunt Agnes wants a hug, she should ask, “Would it be OK if I gave you a hug?”) Then, when toddlers become teens, it’s time to ramp things up. At this age, you can speak candidly and clearly about legal definitions of consent. For example, you would be wise to discuss the risks of sexting. And – on the brighter side – you can discuss the joy of consent and enthusiastic (and sober) participation in  intimacy. Christy Keating, prosecutor turned parenting coach, and CEO of The Heartful Parent, joins Marti & Erin in this Mom Enough episode. Tune in for a rich, heartfelt, and informative discussion on this important aspect of parenting.     HOW WILL YOU TEACH YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT CONSENT?  Whatever the ages of your children, in what situations could you teach them in age-appropriate ways about the concept of consent? If you have adolescents (or, if not, think ahead to when you will), what are key points in this podcast that you would want to be sure to discuss with them? What are some of the situations or sources of pressure that could pose a threat to your teens or young adults in making healthy, respectful choices about consent in romantic relationships?      WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT CONSENT? ❉ HEARTFUL PARENT HANDOUT ON CONSENT. Many of us are uncomfortable talking candidly with our children and teens about sex, perhaps hoping sex education programs at school will do the job. And yet, research shows that, as parents, we often overestimate what our children learn at school. And we underestimate the impact we will have on our children’s attitudes and behaviors if we muster the courage and confidence to talk openly about this important aspect of human development.   Author Janet Rosenzweig, Executive Director of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and a longtime sex educator and author, joins Marti & Erin to talk about what it means to speak comfortably and accurately about sex with children and teens. For example, she emphasizes the importance of teaching children about sexual arousal as an autonomic (involuntary) response that has nothing to do with thought or reason – a critical element in discerning between arousal and love. And she highlights that, when parents take responsibility as primary sex educators for their children, they have the opportunity to wrap those messages in their family’s values. Above all, Dr. Rosenzweig makes a strong case for arming our children with detailed, accurate information about the natural sexual responses humans experience, which in turn will empower our children to make healthy, safe choices now and later.   HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT TALKING WITH YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT SEX? How did your parents or other adults talk to you about sex? How helpful were those conversations in terms of your understanding of your own sexual arousal and the choices you made about sexual behavior? In what ways do you want to do things the same or differently as you try to prepare your children for making safe, healthy sexual decisions?   WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT TALKING WITH CHILDREN ABOUT SEX? ❉ THE SEX-WISE PARENT & THE PARENT'S GUIDE TO TALKING ABOUT SEX. Rough, who is an author, journalist, and speaker focusing on families, health, education, parenting and sexuality. Her latest book is Beyond Birds & Bees: Bringing Home a New Message to Our Kids about Sex, Love, and Equality. has written recently for the New York Times on teaching young children about boundaries and consent and the value of childhood crushes, The Atlantic on both the link between sex ed and gender equality and improving school sex ed, the Washington Post on why it’s important to teach sex ed in mixed-gender groups, and New York Magazine on raising kids without sexual shame. Join us!   "What I learned is that the focus on helping kids wait longer is really not and should not be the end all. It’s really more about how can we prepare them to have a positive experience.”   “The Dutch parents who I met and the American ones too who have inspired me on this really are prioritizing their relationship with their kids over their ideals about what and when their kids will do things.”   “If we have those open lines of communication we actually have more control than if we forbid.”   “The more open and transparent we can be with our kids the better.”   What you’ll hear in this episode: Cultural differences between the US and Amsterdam around gender equality, nudity, and sexuality Normalizing conversations about sexuality Separating nudity from eroticism Differences in sexual health outcomes between US and Dutch teenagers Ways to keep lines of communication open with your kids Double standards applied to boys and girls Why helping your child maintain cross-gender friendships The importance of knowing your kids’ friends What the research says about teenage sex What to do when you feel you’re late to the party in talking to your kids about sex The importance of not having an agenda when having those curious conversations with kids Owning when we feel awkward or uncomfortable Navigating fear and baggage to become available for conversations with our kids Expanding our own knowledge base to have better conversations   What does Joyful Courage mean to you? Oh my gosh, to me joyful courage is all about that permission, that freeing sense of permission that I got from observing parents who knew that, you know, making little mistakes in a day to day conversation with our kids about healthy sexuality, it's meaningless, those little mistakes. The big thing that we're doing right, you know, having an interest in relating with them on the subject and so when I realize that, you know, it's not a thing to damage our kids by telling them too much, it's not a thing to damage our kids by telling them something that wasn't accurate one day and coming back, circling back to it another day. It's, you know, knowing that I could be gentle with myself and that we can actually have fun with the conversation once they kind of got to just be a thread through our normal life, you know, basically joyful courage for me is about going headlong into it, you know, with optimism and cheerfulness and hope and trust.   Resources: Beyond Birds & Bees: Bringing Home a New Message to Our Kids about Sex, Love, and Equality   Where to find Bonnie: Website Twitter Facebook Instagram   ::::   Joyful Courage: Calming the drama and taking control of your parenting journey   This book is all about how to show up as a Joyful Courage parent so that you have better access tot eh tools you need in hot parenting moments – tools that are helpful and maintain connection with your child.   Presale is April 10th – as many of you as possible buying presale would be FABULOUS. “What’s missing in many American lives is an everyday place for conversation about sexuality. We have “do” and “don’t”, but almost no “hmmm – let’s think about that…”  ~ Bonnie Rough Having the chance to live for a period of time in Holland, Bonnie Rough and her young family experienced firsthand the way the Dutch have learned to teach their children about sex, sexuality and gender equality. Her latest book, Beyond Birds and Bees: Bringing Home a New Message to Our Kids about Sex, Love, and Equality, and our conversation in this podcast, are filled with humor, humility, and heart. Many of us parents cringe at the thought of having “the talk” with our young adolescent kids. But the whole notion of having a single sex education session on the so-called birds and bees, let alone waiting until your child is an adolescent, ought to be thrown out entirely!   Author Bonnie Rough discovered some surprising lessons about this while living in the Netherlands when her children were very young. That experience led her to several years of research for her latest book, Beyond Birds and Bees: Bringing Home a New Message to Our Kids about Sex, Love and Equality.   Bonnie joins Marti & Erin for a thought-provoking discussion in this week’s Mom Enough episode. All three agree that teaching our children about sex begins when they are infants, in the verbal and nonverbal messages we give them about their bodies. Sex education continues as we teach young children the importance of consent and respect for their own bodies and others’. Ultimately, sex education is about much more than sex; it is about healthy relationships, grounded in love, respect and equality.   What messages did your parents give you about your body and sex? How did they connect those concepts to larger ideas about gender roles and relationships? In what ways do you want to do things the same or differently with your children?   For the National Sexuality Education Standards, click here.
