The Back Room with Andy Ostroy

Yes, it's true! At 13 Jonathan worked as a camera operator at a television station on Nantucket for its 5:30pm newscast and then was promoted 2 years later to news director. After college he worked as a cameraman for film and tv. His film credits include Spike Lee's “Do the Right Thing” and “Mo' Better Blues,” “Mountain View” for John Sayles, “A Better Tomorrow” for John Woo, and “Dazed and Confused” for Richard Linklater. He later produced independent films, television, and theater, including the award-winning "Baby Steps", “Higher Ground,” “Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding,” “The Last Keepers” “Rhymes with Banana” and most recently “Antarctica”. His TV projects include “Almost There”, "Ivy Dreams," “Must Do Disney”, The Super Bowl Half Time Show, “Away We Go” by Jonathan Larson, and the “Tomorrow is Tonight Show” starring Ben Stiller. Jonathan's also produced commercials for Time Warner, Ford, Disney, Chase and American Express. In theater, he produced the Tony nominated Broadway production of Mario Cantone's “Laugh Whore,” the award-winning play “Avow”, and the 10th anniversary original-cast production of RENT. He is also co-founder of the Nantucket Film Festival, and is event producer for Project ALS, the organization launched by his friend Jenifer Estess, who died from the disease in 2003. I've known JB a couple of decades now, so it was a lot of fun to sit down with him as part of our Live-Audience Series and learn more about his life, career, and his very poignant memories of his dear friend Jonathan Larson, the famed Broadway composer, lyricist and playwright (RENT). Disney Character Hogwarts Sorting

Welcome Potterheads to our first Disney Harry Potter mash-up! From Disney Princesses to Villains, we work through a list of characters from Buzzfeed to see if our Hogwarts House sorting matches those of the internet. Vote below as you listen along! In which Hogwarts House do you think these Disney characters belong? Ariel is a Slytherin Look, not all Slytherins are bad despite Ron teaching that to Harry in book one. Ariel is ambitious and driven. She knows what she wants, even if it is impossible. And figures out a way to get legs and meet Eric. Mermaids and humans? Not a thing…until Ariel makes it happen! Hades is a Slytherin Being one of the Big Three on Olympus is just not quite enough for Hades. He may not always have the best help but his ambition and never-say-die (ha) drive is very Slytherin-esq. Maleficent is a Gryffindor Maleficent believes she has been wronged. And to right that wrong she is going to do what she feels is right. AKA curse the kingdom's baby princess…? Hey, we aren't saying we agree. But she is doing what she believes is right. So it's Gryffindor for us. Flynn Rider is a Ravenclaw/Slytherin For us, it depends on where we are in Flynn's story. At the end, one of us sees Flynn as a knowledgeable and witty character who is a realist looking at the facts. The other one sees him throughout the movies as resourceful and driven to get the dream he wants the most. You decide. Mulan is a Hufflepuff Everything she does is for others. She puts her dad's safety ahead of her own and leads with her heart wherever she goes. She may not be what we all think a Hufflepuff is (patient and nice) but her heart is full of kindness for others, through and through. Hans is a Slytherin I mean, he pretends to love Anna and then tries to kill her to get his own kingdom so he can be King. Ambition and drive? Check and check. Belle is a Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff Belle does sacrifice herself for her dad, just like Mulan. And gives Beast a fair chance, despite his beastliness. But she is also fiercely intelligent and loves to learn. You tell us… Governor Ratcliffe is a Slytherin “Mine, Mine, Mine” is the most Slytherin-ish villain song in all of Disney. Enough said. Tiana is a Slytherin This girl knows what she wants and is willing to work two jobs and save every penny to get it. Driven and ambitious are her middle name. “Almost There” is the Disney Princess song for Slytherins! We will send out the second half of polls next month, so keep your Sorting Hats ready to vote! We're almost at the end of this music battle! Before we put our finalists head to head in the grand finale next week, we need to battle out all of the songs from the Revival Era. This episode proved extra tough with the stiff competition we got from films like Princess and the Frog, Tangled, Frozen, Moana, and Encanto. Which songs will be crowned as our Top 4? Why does Clayton have such a hard time remembering “Almost There”? Why are we such foolish mortals that we incorrectly name that song as “The Wish” rather than “This Wish”? Better alleviate all this suspense and just hit play on this episode to witness all the chaos for yourself. Also, prepare yourself for a record breaking amount of “singing”. What can we say except…. His new podcast is Almost There. “I felt like I had to own becoming something and intuitively understood that if I didn't lay claim to desiring to be something, that it would be too many other forces that would be pulling on me to dictate that I become something else. … When you say you're a writer, if you know nothing else, then you know that you read. You pay attention to the world. … And prison became the metaphor by which I understood the world and poetry became the medium by which I understood what it meant to write about the world and what it meant to take seriously the responsibility to write about the world that I knew.” Show notes: dwaynebetts.com freedomreads.org 01:00 Almost There with Dwayne Betts (Emerson Collective) 05:00 The Black Poets (Dudley Randall • Bantam • 1985) 10:00 Married… with Children (Michael G. ALMOST THERE, 5min,. Japan, Action Directed by Chuck Johnson Two refugees from a broken land have to fight their way into civilization. http://www.quietflame.org/almost-there From Chuck Johnson: The original concept for “Almost There” came about when I had found that bridge. At the time, I was taking a lessons for a motorcycle license at a driving school and I saw it in the distance. I walked over to it to take a look and the look and feel of the location itself was the original spark for the idea of the film. It stayed in the back of my head for a while; but after seeing what was happening in the Ukraine and the number of people that were becoming displaced; I wanted to make it a story about refugees. And given that I am an immigrant to Japan myself, it was already a topic that was close to my heart.
