As Thanksgiving is just around the corner, gratitude is an important topic. It is important to offer a more nuanced perspective, because gratitude can be complicated and can look very different for different people. Gratitude goes beyond the simple phrase, “Just be grateful.” In today's Part 1 of two episodes, we want to give people a brave place to let their true feelings be what they are, regardless of others' expectations. How do we practice gratitude in a way that isn't toxic positivity but still validates our feelings and raises our quality of life? My friend, Christine Koh, is here to contribute to the discussion. She is a speaker, creative consultant, author of Minimalist Parenting, and the podcast co-host of Edit Your Life. Join us! Show Highlights: ● How we define gratitude–it doesn't mean the same thing to everyone! ● How gratitude can be an embracing the joy that is random in life–just as suffering is ● How we define toxic positivity–and how it relates to motherhood ● Why we, as a society, aren't very good at sitting with uncomfortable emotions and pain ● How Christine's background and Asian heritage inform her view of toxic positivity ● How spiritual bypassing relates to toxic positivity in not allowing feelings to be processed and explored ● Why Christine is a fan of cognitive reframing–and how she uses this practical exercise to “flip the script” ● Why we have to give voice to our suffering to process the feelings and move toward growth ● How gratitude is an emotional muscle that we have to flex in our own ways ● Christine's advice to parents about teaching gratitude while not pushing toxic positivity on our kids ● Why it is important for parents to model a wide range of emotions in front of our kids Resources and Links: Connect with Christine Koh: Website, Podcast, and Minimalist Parenting book Connect with KC: Website, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook Get KC's book, How to Keep House While Drowning We love the sponsors that make this show possible! Today's question is probably one of the core causes of stress in young families; ‘How to manage the household mess!' In the episode, Dr. Koh explores… how to make cleaning into a game. How to compromise some of our standards so we can cohabit more peacefully. Finding our own special space where we can have ‘cleanliness control'. And supporting each other through the relentless task of tidying a home.
It's a known fact - hobbies make life happier! So, whether it's music, sports, arts, or otherwise, of course, we want our kids to find passions that fuel their creativity and enjoyment. However, when what should be ‘fun' starts to feel like ‘work', and our kids no longer want to practice or pursue a hobby, when do we push them to stick with it and when do we allow them to throw in the towel? Join our guest Dr. Christine Koh for her insights on When It Is Kind To Let Kids Quit - and when is it NOT!
In this episode, we're talking about chores. Why do kids need them? What are fair expectations? Do we pay our kids for help around the house? We're back with our keynote guest, Dr. Christine Koh. She's describing how chores build our child's life skills, and how to work together as partners and parents without making chores a chore! Join us for this practical episode!

Digital task mastery, pen and paper planning, and keeping the family organized: no two moms do this exactly alike - even those of us who love to plan and organize! In our first interview episode of 2022, Sarah Powers sits down with fellow planner people Christine Koh and Sarah Hart-Unger to discuss our favorite digital resources, pen-and-paper tools, and methods of staying organized at work, home, and school. We get into the nitty gritty of color coded everything, what works and what doesn't for our personalities, and how we use planning tools to avoid over-scheduling and leave white space for joy and (gasp!) even spontaneity. What if we told you that we can live better, happier, and simpler lives by making a few adjustments to how we think about self-care? Would you try it? In this episode, we are talking with Dr.Christine Koh. She's a music and brain scientist turned multimedia creative! She spent a decade in academia, during which time she was awarded prestigious fellowships from the National Institutes of Health to fund her Ph.D. research at Queen's University and joint-appointment postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts Institutes of Technology. Christine was about to become a professor when she decided to hang up her academic spurs in favor of more flexible and independent ventures. We discuss what so many of us view “protective self-care” as and what it really needs to be to actually benefit us in the long run. Christine also shares with us her breakdown of Self-Care into two distinct parts: Protective Care and Restorative Care. And how they relate to boundaries, toxic relationships, taking a “pause”, and really overall -how we care for ourselves. When Dr. Christine Koh wrote her minimalist parenting book 8 years ago, little did she know how relevant it would be for all of us today. The pandemic didn't give us a choice- it forced us all to slow down, look inward and do less. Now, many parents and families are starting to resurface after an incredibly trying and challenging year and are trying to navigate how to find the new normal. Dr. Koh's advice is more relevant now than ever- optimize your time and your life so you're not feeling so bound to the details and so you can actually live and enjoy the time with your family. Find your level of chaos and crazy and just take it down a notch.
Please note: We partnered with GSK for their Take 5 meningitis campaign for this episode, but my thoughts are my own.) My kids are getting older and as they get closer to their college years I want to make sure that they are covered when it comes to vaccines to keep them healthy when they leave our home. As mentioned, vaccines are important, and staying up to date on vaccinations is critical. However, as I found out recently, you may not know about all vaccines that your kids should have and that includes getting both sets of shots for meningitis. Take 5 For Meningitis The Take 5 for Meningitis campaign is a campaign that GSK has started that aims to make sure that all parents are aware of the reality of meningitis and the importance of vaccination. I mean, did you know that adolescents and young adults have higher rates of meningitis due to close contact with each other, sharing drinks or eating utensils, coughing or kissing? While meningococcal disease is uncommon, studies have shown that between 2014-2017, the relative risk of contracting Meningitis B was 3.5 to 5 times higher in college students aged 18-24 years compared with peers not attending college. Today we partnered with our friend Christine Koh from the Edit Your Life podcast who recently interviewed Dr. Len Friedland who is a dad, pediatrician, and research scientist, and serves as Vice President, Director of Scientific Affairs and Public Health, for GSK Vaccines. When you're already juggling a dozen projects, how do you make space and time for something new - especially if you have no idea how it's done? That's the dilemma author, podcaster, business owner, designer, and all-around renaissance woman, Christine Koh, found herself facing when she decided to add "getting bylines in major publications" to her repertoire. There was just one problem: Christine didn't actually know how to do that. But by getting intentional about her goal and reaching out to her network for help, she quickly added "published in the Boston Globe, CNN, and The Washington Post" to her already-illustrious bio. In this episode of Mother of Reinvention, Christine and I discuss her many career pivots and projects, her recent decision to reclaim the "Dr." in her title, why taking chances pays off, why it's so important to reach out to your community for help, and more. How conversations about sex, love, and equality play out clearly differ depending on where you live. In this episode, you’ll hear from Bonnie Rough, author of “Beyond Birds and Bees: Bringing Home a New Message To Our Kids about Sex, Love, and Equality.” Bonnie and host Christine Koh talk about Bonnie’s observations about the differences between American and Dutch cultural approaches to sex, bodies, love, and more. They talk about Bonnie’s experience abroad, as well as her impression that, “American culture has confused the body with sexuality, sexuality with eroticism, eroticism with shame, and shame with safe keeping.” Links:Bonnie RoughBecome An Askable Parent is a podcast from AMAZE.org. Dr. Christine Koh, in her own words, is a "music and brain scientist turned multimedia creative." Christine creates content to help people live better, happier, and with elevated purpose and intention, including the Edit Your Life podcast. She's also someone who grew up with adverse childhood experiences, and has experience in building a family when our family of origin was not the kind of family we want. In this episode we discuss the measurable physiological detriments of toxic stress; the importance of safe, stable, nurturing environments; and most importantly, that it is possible for significant challenges of early adversity to be met once they are no longer cloaked in shame. As Vincent Felitti, co-founder of the ACE Study, explains: “When we make it okay to talk about what happened, it removes the power that secrecy so often has.” Here are links to some of the writing on the topic that we discuss in this episode: Christine Koh: The Adults Who Saved Me And What You Need To Know About ACEs Donna Jackson Nakazawa for Psychology Today: 8 Ways People Recover From Post Childhood Adversity Syndrome Dr. Nerissa Bauer for healthychildren.org: ACEs- Adverse Childhood Experiences NPR.org: Take the ACE Quiz- And Learn What It Does And Doesn't Mean CDC.gov: Adverse Childhood Experiences and follow Christine and her work at christinekoh.com * Leave us a rating or review in your favorite podcast app! * Join us on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok @whatfreshhellcast on Twitter @WFHpodcast questions and feedback: info@whatfreshhellpodcast.com Learn more about your ad choices. She's been sharing her own journey of radical self care on her Instagram feed, so we wanted to tap her to share what she's discovered along the way, and how we can reframe our own view of self-care to get us through tough times. Did you celebrate the return of the school bus, or did you dread it? We asked Christine Koh, one of our favorite guests, host of the award-winning podcast, “Edit Your Life.” Listen to this episode to get tried-and-true tips straight from the host and guest extraordinaire for the new school year, including how to delegate family tasks (hint: kids can help, too!), ways to avoid overload, and why it's ok to say “no” to volunteer gigs, guilt free. Just in time for September, we're revisiting our conversation and Christine's strategies for going back to school.
On this episode of The Work-Life Equation: the back-to-school shuffle! Are you ready for all that it entails: endless permission slips and school forms, book covers, parent-teacher meetings, homework, after-school schedules…and making lunch? Our guest, host of the Edit Your Life podcast Christine Koh, talks the mixed blessing of back-to-school season, and shares how you can manage the flood of obligations, along with practical tips for “editing your life” and “making room for awesome.”
Minimalism can seem like a ridiculous dream when you're up to your eyes in kiddy paraphernalia. But Editing Your Life doesn't mean having a spartan home or a frugal lifestyle. It's about understanding your family's core values and priorities so you can make wise choices about what gets to stay, and what has to go. In today's episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday you'll find out how to pare down your life to create space for the things that really matter. The activities you actually want to do, the information you want to consume, and the people who you truly want to spend time with. My guest today is SuperMum, Christine Koh. Christine's the co-author of Minimalist Parenting, a book designed to help you enjoy modern family life more, by doing less. So popular was the book, that she and her fellow author Asha Dornfest went on to create and co-host their own show. Edit Your Life is a weekly podcast that ‘helps you edit the unnecessary from your life so you have more room to enjoy the awesome'. Christine's also the founder and editor of the award-winning Boston Mamas; founder of Brave New World Designs; and serves as the creative director at Women Online and The Mission List. Christine lives in Boston, Massachusetts with her husband Jonathan and two daughters, Laurel and Violet who are 12 and 6. In todays show, you'll learn that editing your life isn't simply about decluttering (although we do talk about that too). We discuss practical strategies for managing your time; simplifying and therefore really starting to enjoy mealtimes; streamlining the school year and controlling extra curricular activities so they don't control you. Oh, and of course my personal favourite, prioritising your own self-care. I am so happy to have Christine on my show today. She's an organisational queen, and a girl after my own heart. We have a good old chin-wag about streamlining and systematising your busy life so you can make space for the things you truly love and value. In this episode of the Work-Life Equation, we revisit the parent webinar, Edit Your Life: Making Modern Family Life Work, featuring Christine Koh and Asha Dornfest, co-hosts of the Edit Your Life show, that covered the concept of “minimalist parenting.” Christine and Asha offered ideas for “editing your life” and making modern family life easier to manage.
