The holiday season brings out all those holiday dinners, invites, and plus 1 invites. When it comes to those family gatherings, you hear the, you're getting to be too old to be single noise. Now this the time of year people get sensitive about being single. Whether you are re-entering the dating scene after a long hiatus, or maybe just continuing the search for "the right one", your girlfriends, your sister and maybe your mother will have no end of advice on how to meet the love of your life. The last thing you need with a new relationship is a new infection. According to the CDC, the age group in which STI rates are rising most rapidly is adults at midlife and beyond. This is a huge surprise to many people whom seem to think that chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV and herpes are limited to 20- and 30-year-olds that are having random hook-ups. Most guys hate using condoms - How many of those (lame) excuses have you heard? But Dr. Oakley have seen and treated a lot of infections in women who decided to skip the condom “just this once.” Do not depend on the man to be prepared. The savvy single woman keeps her own stash of male condoms on hand. Be sure they are all marked “extra-large.” *WINK* In this episode, Dr. Oakley and Holly go over some practical steps you can take to minimize your risk like: • Familiarize yourself with the most common STIs, and understand how they are transmitted. • Learn about screening and how to protect yourself, even if a condom is out of the question. • Consider getting an HPV vaccine even if you are over age 45 Thank you for listening. "I think people often mix up what 'good' sexual health is," therapist Lisa Hochberger, M.Ed. tells Bustle. "They think that if they don't have an STI or some sort of sexual dysfunction then they are healthy. But while staying on top of your STI status and being healthy in that regard is a part of being sexually healthy, it doesn't stop there. For me, signs of good sexual health manifest in a person's approach to sexuality," Hochberger says. "They feel positive and confident about having consensual, safe, and pleasurable sexual experiences. They have the correct language to communicate the kind of sexual pleasure they want to give and receive, and it is done in a respectful way." "Body and psyche work in tandem — and impact each other," Fehr says. "Which is why at the core of good sexual health is also having sovereignty (decision-making power) over your body and your sexual choices and having agency to carry out these decisions. [This means] taking action that honors and respects you and your body, and that leaves you feeling congruent and in integrity with yourself. "While we may live in a country where a woman's autonomy over her body feels like an uphill battle we can, at least, maintain that agency in our personal lives. Being sexually healthy is about feeling good about who you are sexually, making decisions that are right for your body, and aligned with your values," Fehr says. "[It's also] engaging in safe and respectful relationships, and not having to do anything sexually that you don't want to do. The barrier to the sexual health convo coming from people who DO NOT have an STI is simply them receiving our experiences and lessons post-diagnosis. This communication is a critical part of prevention efforts and is far under-utilized as a sex positive approach falling to the prioritization of a sex avoidant approach such as “use a condom” exclusively to reduce risk of STIs.

Avocado Allie is back!! On this episode of the Period Chats Podcast, I reconnect with the amazing Allie, our PCOS “cyst”er, who also happens to be a social media influencer, yoga instructor and model. Today we're talking about going to the gynecologist - the good, the bad, and the uncomfortable. We've all had different experiences with gyno's, and it doesn't get talked about enough in general, so today we're sitting down for some relatable real talk about it. In this episode, Allie and I exchange a few stories of experiences with different gynecologists and what those visits did to our overall emotional state around the topic. A lot of gynecologists still approach the conversation of birth control by touting old-school beliefs, and this can cause a negative experience for patients who may feel gaslighted or judged. On the other hand, for some reason our conversations with almost all of our on-call nurses have ROCKED. Allie shares about her recent male gynecologist staring off their visit by mansplaining PCOS, and then suggesting that there are two camps of PCOS patients - those who are trying to get pregnant and those who are on birth control - and that there shouldn't be anyone else. (Effectively putting the somewhere between 1-in-10 and 1-in-5 people that get periods who have PCOS into two broad boxes). This doctor performed an extra painful biopsy, and later sent her for an ultrasound that she should have gotten first. The horrible experience caused her to research other people's stories about excessive pain after endometrial biopsies. She dealt with heavy emotions caused by the poor treatment and unexpected pain, and posted on her media outlets. The response was copious - which feels so normalizing, but also upsetting that so many people experience similar things! And it may make many of ya'll feel less alone as we unpack why these types of procedures are often rushed, under-explained, not accompanied by any pain mitigation - and how all that is somehow still considered normal in most gynecology offices. Allie also shares about how Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and doctor visits sometimes interact, and once again I feel way less alone as I recount phone calls for cleanliness reassurance and anxiety spikes around doctor visits as well. In this episode, I also recount the time when the gynecologist told me I had an STI when it was really an autoimmune stress response after a yeast infection. We know these are frustrations that many of us can relate to regarding the medical system, but the vibe of this episode is definitely not a gripe-filled complaint sesh; it's a relatable and relieving conversation about the wisdom we've gained during the imperfect treatment we've survived, and how it has added to our passion to invite others further into the world of holistic physical and mental health. Elle (she/her) is a 27 year old sex positive Oregonian. She's heterosexual and monogamous and ironically our talk led to this statement of mutual non monogamy which you'll hear more about here. Diagnosed with HSV-1 genitally just a few months ago, I was really shocked at how cool she was with talking about it so soon. We talk about how her self education led her to discovering the most useful information she received was learning how others navigate discussions about HSV, disclose and just overall talk about it. It's odd that health organizations don't want to work with those of us who are being sought out for sexual health information at all. My resistance was that I'm not credible because I'm a dude with a podcast. Now, as a non profit, I'm still just unable to get connected to anyone at the CDC for what's a no brainer collaboration to minimize new STI transmissions. Therapy Jeff and Sarah Rice are back, and they're answering even more of your sex-related questions. This week, they tackle tricky questions like: -How important is sexual chemistry? -Is it okay if my partner thinks about someone else when they masturbate? -Are kinks a dealbreaker? -How do I talk to a potential partner about having an STI? -How to manage high and low desire discrepancies in a relationship? Hint: the answer is almost always, "it depends," and/or "just say the thing." Plus, Sarah tells us how she took some advice she and Jeff shared last week and applied it to her own relationship. There's also plenty of talk in this episode about what makes Halloween the sexiest holiday and why Jeff has wet dream envy. So, you know, it's a totally typical episode of This Changes Everything. Awkward conversations are common in healthcare settings. Learning how to actually have these conversations (or start these conversations, or navigate these conversations)…that's much more rare. Discussing sexual health doesn't have to be challenging for patients or providers; with some preparation and some practice, it can become as second nature as any other discussion you have in the exam room. Making assumptions, or avoiding the topic altogether, can create missed opportunities and serious gaps in the patient's care. A common misconception is that the patients will bring up anything that you should know – in reality, many patients are hoping that you will start the conversation. This week, we talk with Genesis, a college health Nurse Practitioner and sexual health educator, and get some great strategies for handling these conversations. We'll discuss: ✅ How to obtain a patient's sexual health history✅ The Six P's – what they are and how you can use them to guide your conversation✅ Strategies for getting comfortable discussing sex with patients✅ Which patients are candidates for discussing sexual health While the conversation is important, addressing sexual health with your patients means more than just talk. We also cover strategies for helping your uninsured/underinsured patients, as well as how to increase your effectiveness with STI (sexually transmitted infection) testing and treatment. Dr. Evelin Molina Dacker joins us to validate and affirm our findings so far throughout this series, which is that the aspects of sex education that people don't get from their health care providers appear to stem from providers' discomfort with speaking about sex. We dissect the connection of sex to intercourse and sexuality and pleasure as a way of finding a common ground reference point that allows both the patient and clinician to co-create as a way of allowing the patient to disclose relevant information that can while potentially making the provider uncomfortable, also allow for top notch treatment to happen as a result. In learning to take a sexual history, we cut through a lot of the unneccessary obstacles a patient will go on to navigate when faced with an STI or a partner with an STI. It isn't just sex-positive health care we are needing to advocate for, it's pleasure positive. Instagram: @sexmeddoc Website: Maketimeforthetalk.com

Scientists Are Trying To Study Human Neurons… In Rat Brains? Scientists have a tricky time studying neurons, partially because they are remarkably difficult to grow in a lab. They need other cells around them, and they don't replicate or reproduce like other cells do. In a new study in Nature, researchers figured out that they can take a ball of human brain tissue and frankenstein it into a rat's brain, and the rat can respond to it. This exciting discovery could offer scientists a new way to study the human brain. This week's co-host Kathleen Davis talks with Umair Irfan, staff writer at Vox, about this story and other science news of the week. They chat about neurons that can play ping pong, COVID updates, a disturbing uptick in STI cases, how deep sea mining could destroy an underappreciated ecosystem, and how a mummified dinosaur named Dakota is challenging what paleontologists knew about dino preservation.   How Gamification Has Crept Into School, Work, And Fitness Gamers often spend hours embarking on quests, unlocking new levels, and collecting badges. But what about when aspects of games start popping up in other parts of life—like work, school, and exercise? Adrian Hon created the fitness app “Zombies, Run!” and has thought a lot about how the principles of gaming have crept into so many different corners of our lives, and why it may not always be as innocent as it seems. Ira and co-host Kathleen Davis talk with Adrian Hon, author of You've Been Played: How Corporations, Governments, and Schools Use Games to Control Us All. Hon is also the CEO and founder of the game developer, Six to Start, based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.   A Taste Of New York In A Hyper-Local Beer If you're a person who enjoys beer, you've likely been aware of the craft beer boom of the last couple of decades. India Pale Ales, or IPAs, have become some of the most popular types of beer brewed in local breweries. But it doesn't get more local than a type of beer that most people have never heard of: the gruit. The gruit traces its origins back to the 11th century. Historically, instead of hops, brewers used herbs and spices native to wherever they lived. This results in a flavorful beer that changes taste depending on the plant life in the region. Fast forward a few hundred years to now, and you'll find brewers getting back to this hyper-local brewing tradition. Those brewers include Isaac Patient, head brewer of Sixpoint Brewery in Brooklyn, New York. His team partnered with Saara Nafici and Brendan Parker at Red Hook Farms to procure four key herbs for the brew: rosemary, tarragon, lemongrass, and mugwort.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
