On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, friend of the podcast, Charles Murray returns to chat with Razib again. Murray has been a public intellectual and scholar since the 1970's. He is the author of Losing Ground, The Bell Curve, Human Accomplishment, Real Education, Coming Apart and What it means to be a libertarian and Human Diversity, among others. Born in 1943 in Newton, Iowa, Murray has a BA from Harvard, an MA and PhD from MIT, and did a 1960's stint in the Peace Corps in Thailand. He has held positions at the American Institutions for Research, the Manhattan Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. More than four years after their last conversation, and seven years after his official retirement, Murray reflects with Razib on where he sees America going in the next decade, and what has surprised him about the last 25 years. Razib asks what it is like to be a long-standing “Never Trump conservative” and a libertarian in Trump's populist America. They also discuss the end of the “awokening” that began in the mid-2010s, and whether Murray's long exile from notice and acknowledgement from mainstream opinion-leaders and tastemakers is at an end. Murray also addresses the ideological fractures he sees on the right, and how America will deal with the last generation of mass immigration that has altered the US' demographic balance. They also discuss how taboo it still is to talk about group differences in cognitive performance, and whether America will be able to face the reality of demographics and the social consequences thereof in the 21st century.
Grant Overstake's audio drama details racial strife in Wichita, Kansas, in 1968. We're revisiting Jo Reed and AudioFile's Alan Minskoff's discussion of this 2025 Audie Award Finalist in Young Adult. A seventh-grade boy's life becomes upended when a Black family moves in next door. The narrators of this fraught coming-of-age story are excellent. Just because a government department has "education" in its name doesn't mean it helps kids learn. That's the core takeaway from this conversation between Charlie and the president of America's greatest college, Dr. Larry Arnn of Hillsdale. In this episode, I dive into the fundamental flaws and real crisis of the educational system in the US. How can 54% of people, 17-74, only have a literacy rate of that of a Grade 6 student?? How can this be the most powerful, wealthy and industrious nation in the world with that as their foundation? Why would we NOT want to pour money into the future of our society? Is this the beginning of the end of an empire? Huge questions...painful answers...but necessary conversations.
The results of the 2022 midterm elections highlight that younger generations - both in their large numbers and participation in elections - are key to consistent success. The problem now confronted is that our educational system is dominated by those on one side of the political spectrum, who are determined to ensure that these young voters believe there is only one right idea, only one right opinion, and only one right candidate - the one the Left has preselected for them. We must address this indoctrination, along with the usurpation of power by those in power of our federal government, by increasing local and state participation, which is necessary to get the focus of our schools back on teaching students how to think, not what to think. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/solis-veritas/support

In the US, we think "freedom" is about choices. And, it partly is. But true freedom is about so much more. It's about being free from our engrained patterns of responses to the external world. From our sense of identity. Free to consistently explore, change and evolve who we are, without feeling tied to old thoughts, behaviours and beliefs. That can be easier said than done, but the groundwork to help us do so can be laid early on, during our education.I sit down with Wade Cavin, a dedicated and brilliant Waldorf Educator, to ask him what our education system is missing at its root, why that's important, how we might approach our education differently, for our children and for ourselves as adults, and why it might be beneficial to do so.He also speaks to why it's so important for humans of all ages to cultivate awareness of their intuition, imagination, their interests, and desires, because those are the signs that direct them on how to live their life. This was an incredibly enlightening conversation for me... even more so on the second listen as I was editing it. I hope you enjoy it. www.thisnakedvoice.com@thisnakedvoiceSupport the show

The important thing about actually helping someone to learn is to meet them “Where they're at”, not to see that they come up to certain standards. Standards are based on controlling people. The way we get an education is not just memorizing a bunch of facts and formulas. The intelligence, understanding and perception of the student needs to be included. Here at the monastery no one is required to memorize anything. In order to train monks to teach the dharma, I say study, discuss the material, practice, and face the wall: train your mind. The important thing is to learn, not to understand in the conventional sense. If you would like these talks to continue, PLEASE VISIT OUR DONATE PAGE at sokukoji.org/donate

Todd & Jen talk about what a real education program looks like. Today's episode is brought to you by PingPong Design + Marketing. Digital marketing & design for the health, beauty & fitness industries. PingPong wants to make the internet a better place. Check them out in the link below! We kick off by making sure the definition of education is understood both so that as business partners they're on the same page and second so that the salon team knows what's expected.Maintaining a beginner's mindset. You can ALWAYS learn something from ANYONE if you don't have a bad mindset. Why "watching each other" is a bad game plan and doesn't work.Stop assuming that you're supposed to know everything. How they employ constructive criticism with candor. Why the Hello education program is not for everyone, and we love it that way.Resources needed to educate.Bad educators make things about them. The importance of being able to pivot and adjust as an educator.Hello Hair Co and weekly classes. Leveraging a contagious atmosphere. Why the 'owner' doesn't need to be the center of attention. How much coaching and mentoring goes into running and building a team. (If you want it to actually work.)Education is more than learning to do a haircut. Components like consultation and posture often get overlooked.Opening your mind and being OK with not being great at something. An honest effort is a requirement. Not everyone makes it through our education program. There's an expectation of advancement. What shadowing looks like at Hello. It's NOT doing other people's shampoos and sweeping. It's learning, experiencing, conversing, and growing so that you can take new ideas back to your salon home and apply them.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++PingPong Design + MarketingHello Hair Pro Exclusive Offer: pingpongdm.com/hello-hair-promoOur new website by PingPong Design + Marketing: https://hellohairco.com/Follow us on social! From that point, David and I both agreed that dialogue at that level is ever-evolving, because in any relationship … between individuals, within a community, or between different cultures … people are always changing, circumstances are always changing, and so there is always more to learn from and with each other. From there we focused on how the group of 23 schools over which he presides works to bring the most meaningful and enriching education to underserved youth. These schools would be any parents' dream for their children's development, not only because they nurture individual skills and even hidden talents, but because they are doing the active work of prioritizing social emotional learning for every person within each school's community. We talked about the challenges, specifically the challenges caused by this country's long history and undeniable patterns of racial injustice, that gave rise to the powerful solutions manifesting everyday at the Urban Assembly schools. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/onewhiteteacher/message

Young people deserve access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare—but those needs aren't always easy to acquire in the United States. Diana Thu-Thao Rhodes, Vice President of Policy, Partnerships, and Organizing at Advocates for Youth, sits down to talk with us about the barriers young people face when in need of sex education and sexual and reproductive health services.Young people's access to sex education in the United States isn't a pretty picture; a patchwork of legislation at the federal and state level impact sex education, meaning there isn't an overarching federal bill that mandates safe sex education. State policies include a wide-range of practices—for example, 39 states and D.C. mandate some form of sex education or HIV education, but what is included in those lesson plans vary across the country. State-by-state and school-district-by-school-district lessons could be abstinence-based, abstinence-stressed, or must include teachings on certain topics, leading to entirely different education experiences based on where young people live and go to school. On top of facing a patchwork of sex education legislation, young people feel disproportionate barriers to accessible sexual and reproductive healthcare. Many young people may not feel that they can make their parents aware of their healthcare needs, may not have access to transportation or money, or may not feel supported by the current health infrastructure where they live if they are transgender or gender expansive. Similar barriers make young people jump through a variety of hoops to access abortion care, as well. In addition, if a young person does not want to inform a parent or guardian in a state that requires parental notification, young people must seek a judicial bypass, a legal process that necessitates permission from a judge to receive the procedure. Six-week abortion bans, like the one recently passed in Texas, will undoubtedly and unduly impact young people who need access to abortion care. To better support young people in their access to sexual and reproductive healthcare and sex education, we must advocate for policies that ensure young people's confidentiality when accessing sexual health services, pass legislation that expands sexual health service access across the country such as the Real Education and Access for Healthy Youth Act (REAHYA) and the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA), address state-by-state patchwork comprehensive sex education legislation, remove forced parental-involvement laws, allowance of over-the-counter oral contraception without age restriction, and strengthen protections for LGBTQ youth and gender-affirming healthcare. A culture shift is required to support the health and rights of young people—young people's sexuality is a natural part of adolescent development and cannot be shamed, ignored, or met with silence. In this week's episode, Kaylee and Jen do a deep dive into sex ed policy around the United States. First, Kaylee covers the variations of rules for sex ed content on a state-by-state level. Then, we go through the history of abstinence-only sex ed funding in the US, particularly looking at the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA), Title V of the Social Security Act, and Community Based Abstinence Education (CBAE). After covering these federal grants, Kaylee makes the case that abstinence-only sex education perpetuates systemic racism in the US. You can get involved to fight against systemic racism in sex education by asking your representatives to support the Real Education for Healthy Youth Act and the Youth Access to Sexual Health Services Act, or by donating to the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the US (SIECUS). Kassam and Ashley long aspired to own their own businesses but were not sure which industry to enter or how to begin. In 2014, after experiencing long waiting lists for their daughter at their local childcare centers, Ashley expressed interest in opening one in the area. They soon decided to take on that challenge, starting their first childcare business, Children’s Corner at Main Street, October 2014 in Spring Hill, TN. After many lessons and persistence, they have now acquired two additional centers. With a clearer vision of how to merge their passions and training/educational backgrounds, they have been growing their footprint in the engineering and real estate industries. Their umbrella corporation, Bhegani Enterprises, Inc. encompasses the engineering, real estate, and education industries. They prioritize childcare center acquisitions, offer civil engineering consultancy services and STEM workshops/tutoring. Now, Ashley and Kassam are actively seeking two childcare center acquisitions and are excited about the positive impact this will bring to the local community and overall goals. www.bheganienterprises.com/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Today’s show is my perspective on the college admission scandal that has been grabbing headlines across the US. At the center of the scandal is a Rick Singer, a former Canadian football League player who has more recently been in the speaking circuit and working as a college admissions consultant. Fifty people, including 33 parents, were charged last month for their alleged roles in a scam by which California college-admissions consultant William “Rick” Singer said he helped get their children into selective schools either by creating fake athletic profiles and bribing coaches to list the students as recruited athletes, or boosting their ACT or SAT scores by having someone fix their wrong answers. Here’s the problem with the whole story. Who was really harmed by all of this? Some people say that the students who legitimately should have been accepted to these elite schools are the ones who were harmed. I have a different view. The parents who engaged in this deceit have hurt their own children. I believe that children learn by modelling the behaviour they witness. Rather than teach their kids to work for their accomplishments, the parents are leaving the field open for their kids to create several unhelpful interpretations. You can take a shortcut in life when things don’t work out the way you want them to. The parents don’t have faith in their child to succeed on their own. The kids could spend their entire lives thinking they’re a screw up and will never measure up. The optics of graduating from an elite school is more important to the parent’s ego than the substance of living a happy and fulfilled life. At that point the kids stop being human. They become an object for the purpose of satisfying the parent’s ego. There is so much about this story that is screwed up on so many levels. A university education is a valuable step in many people’s lives. But it’s not everything. In fact, numerous studies have shown that graduating near the top of the class from a smaller lesser known school results in better life outcomes than graduating in the bottom half of the class from an elite school. It comes down to reinforcing beliefs. If you are doing well in high-school, you might represent the top few percent in your class. When you get accepted at Harvard, you might be at the bottom of your class and still represent the top 0.1% of the global student population in terms of academic achievement. But if you spend 4 or 6 or 9 years at the bottom of your class, the message is you’re a screwup. When kids are in their formative years, developing self reinforcing patterns of high self esteem is incredibly important to constructive life outcomes. Let’s frame this story in a larger context. In 2017, Kessler international published a study based on a survey of 300 students. The survey found: 86 percent claimed they cheated in school. 54 percent indicated that cheating was OK. Some said it it is necessary to stay competitive. 97 percent of admitted cheaters say they have never been caught. 76 percent copied word for word someone else's assignments.. 12 percent indicated they would never cheat because of ethics. 42 percent said they purchased custom term papers, essays and thesis online. There is something wrong with our culture that places more emphasis on the appearance of credentials than the substance of actual education. The education is the real knowledge, wisdom, perspective, and resilience that comes from integrating experience gained on the journey of life.
Today on the Matt Walsh Show, Donald Trump endorses the idea of Bible literacy classes in public school. The left is upset, of course, but Trump is absolutely ight. You can’t have a real education without the Bible. Also, the Kamala Harris sex scandal no one cares about. And finally, CNBC claims that having kids will make you go broke. They're wrong. Peter Hutton doesn't just talk about education revolution. He makes it happen. As principal of Templestowe College in Victoria, he's introduced innovations that some would either welcome, or strongly reject. Take for example the fact that as of 2015, the school does not organise its students into year levels; students can have phones in class; and they can take more, or less than six years to complete their secondary studies. Now in its sixth year of its transformation, Templestowe College has gone from being a basket case on the verge of closing, to a thriving school where they have to turn away new student enrolments, and even applications from teachers desperate to get in. Those lucky enough to get a place are willing to travel long distances for the privilege of being enrolled at TC. It begs the question... why aren't all schools like this, or at least more like this? And why does TC seem so radical and unusual? I caught up with Peter at the Improving Initial Teacher Education conference in Melbourne, in April 2016, to find out more about this amazing story. AN “unteachable” army of 1,210 kids were suspended from school at least TEN times last year, figures show. This has become farcical. Britain’s worst-behaved pupils were barred for offences including drug-taking, boozing and attacks on teachers and classmates. Other “crimes” by the tearaways included theft, racism, sexual misconduct and bullying, the Department for Education said. Of the offenders 130 were at primary school, 940 at secondary — most aged 13 to 15 — and 140 at special schools for troubled children. Christopher McGovern, from the Campaign for Real Education, said: “Some children are unteachable — so disruptive that the education of classmates is being seriously damaged." I can tell you from my teaching days the problems are mounting up. What was Neil's reaction on hearing TEENAGERS will be forced to take dancing lessons in a huge shake-up for PE in the UK. For the first time it will become compulsory for pupils aged 11 to 14. The move comes despite David Cameron’s preference for competitive sport. The PM sparked a row last year when he said schools had hit a sports target “with things like Indian dance”. He complained: “That’s not really sport.” The Government’s newly unveiled curriculum keeps dance as part of PE at primary schools and extends compulsory lessons to secondaries where they are optional. The draft curriculum says Key Stage 3 pupils should learn dances built on the “range of movement patterns” taught at primary schools." Our conversation might surprise you. The use of the mobile phone has been brought into great debate after a young lad committed suicide when his mother had confiscated his phone. In the Mail there was an article by Martha Roberts in which she explains she has become a cyber junkie. She also offers ideas of how to beat her addiction.

One message is delivered relentlessly in American education: Everyone should go to college. And then there's Charles Murray's message: Few people either need, or are able to handle, the rigorous liberal-arts training that college is supposed to provide. But this isn't a death sentence for those who are not academically inclined. Opportunities to enter well-paying professions and lead good lives abound for these people, and the sooner that's recognized, the sooner everyone can get the education they need. Christopher B. Nelson, whose 'great books' college provides the sort of liberal arts education Murray believes is beyond most people's reach, will respond. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
