Political polarization has become an unfortunate fact of life. This has been accelerated by social media selectively banning certain voices while allowing others to continue unfettered. The result has been that all forms of two-way conversation are almost completely non-existent online. The current trend of hyper-polarization is clearly unsustainable, but nobody seems to know how to get from where we are now to a more civil future. Doug & Bill have a recommendation that is surprisingly simple. Your host for this podcast is Doug Utberg, the founder and principal consultant for Business of Life, LLC. Doug: Welcome to the terminal value podcast. I have Representative Bill Post with me today and so Bill is actually the representative in the Oregon Legislature who represents the town where I live in Newburgh. What I feel is a very topical conversation is you know, as we're recording this. Recently there have been decisions by either Facebook or YouTube or twitter or a number of social media sites to either you basically to either de-list a number of people or to you know not to cancel accounts. And some people are concerned that this is a huge. This is some sort of huge imposition of free speech. So Bill has a very unique perspective because he spent four decades in radio and so he his perspective is actually pretty similar to mine in that people are really overestimating the broad importance of social media and that real interaction still has to happen between people and so because just an excellent conversation we had right before we started recording was about how you know the the people who are dominating the radio. As far as talk radio like actually listening to it on the airwaves are still Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck and they learned how to hone their craft in the 70s and 80s when there were a lot of the pieces of the art that were taught that are really are lost now and that really just fascinated me. And Bill I'd love to love to hear your thoughts or get your input. Rep Bill:  Sure, yeah I mean I started my first radio job in 1978. My first and I was still in high school. My first full-time real gig was 81 and it was in top 40 radio and you got to remember we were still using real real tape. We were using obviously 33 and 45 rpm records and we used what were called carts which if you've never seen one most people haven't they look like if you can remember eight tracks. They look like an eight-track but they were they actually were two-track. Start and stop, that's the tracks and they were 30 seconds 60 seconds or whatever time you had on the tape. And those so there were there was a skill that you had to learn in that. If those things didn't work what did you do? It was live radio; you didn't have a computer to back that thing up or a satellite to pull in another signal or anything like that. So, so those of us who grew up in that era of radio. We were taught how to think very quick on our feet because I'll give you a really amazing example. We used to get our news at the top of the hour there's people asking me, Why is news...

Bill: Where are you joining us from? Kristine: I'm joining us from Orlando. So for those of you who are just tuning in, this is "Snowbirding 101." We're going to come to you with a ... did we say monthly? Monthly series? Bill: Monthly. Yes. Kristine: Just talking about if you've had any thoughts of moving down to Florida, down to the warmth, down to the sunshine, this is a great series to kind of get you started. And just we're going to talk about pretty much everything. We're going to pick a topic each month. This month, we are talking about the differences in construction, what to expect. There's so many differences, like Bill was saying, to anything that is, what'd you say, new construction is after the war? Bill: Post war. Yeah. [crosstalk 00:01:08] Kristine: Which is so funny to me. Bill: [inaudible 00:01:10] foundations, that's the way to go. Kristine: Yeah. So obviously, things are really different. And so, I'll just start with that first difference, is that you're going to find a lot newer homes here, especially in the Orlando area. We were going to have Janet from Tampa on our show today. She's sick, so we'll have her on, probably next month. But I can't speak for every city, but that's why we're bringing on a bunch of different agents. But I can speak for Orlando, and here in Orlando, especially the county that I'm in, which is Seminole County, you're seeing the majority of homes in 1980s, 1990s, and then a ton of new construction. Like my house is built in 2016. So it really helps with your home insurance. Who wouldn't want to insure a brand new home? Bill: It's so refreshing to hear, because we get a lot of buyers looking in the Melrose area here, and sit down, they're like, "We want that open concept floor plan. We want something relatively new, we don't have to put a lot of time in." And it's like, "Have you thought of North Carolina?" Because it just doesn't exist up here. Kristine: But you don't have the charm of those old homes. And here, our new construction is really built on, maybe like 1/4 of an acre, and they are "cookie cutter" homes. So basically, the builder gets a planned unit development in a subdivision, sometimes it's gated, sometimes it's not, and they have anywhere between like three and seven floor plans. And they pretty much just build those over and over and over again. So it is pretty cool. You can go in ... It's called semi customs. You can go in and choose the floor plan, you can choose your lot, and then you can choose all the finishes, but they already have all of the plans for the home done. And then the outside of them looks different. You choose like your elevations. There's usually like two or three different outside aesthetic options that you can do. But it's a good system. It takes them about four months to build the home, and so, that's from scratch, that's from dirt on the ground. Bill: Okay. Yeah, that's a pretty quick turnaround. And I think the good news is, like a lot of people up here have lived in their 1890s Victorian, or turn of the century Colonial, 1920s Colonial, and they've spent 15, 20, 25 years with the upkeep of that property. And I think they're pretty much done with the charm aspect of it, and they're just kind of looking for something easy, so I think that's obviously a great fit. And we'll get a little nerdy here about the architecture and how things are built. So most of the stuff here, Kristine, is wooden frame construction. Tell us what it is down in Florida, usually.

Will Oregon stop using daylight saving time in 2021?

ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: (FEBRUARY 16, 2019) We change our clocks every spring. We move them one hour forward. We call this daylight saving time. It begins March 10. We move them one hour backward in the fall. This is called standard time. Many countries in the world change their clocks. Most of the United States does this. Only Arizona and Hawaii do not. Some lawmakers in Oregon want our state to stop using daylight saving time. Kim Thatcher is a state senator. Bill Post is a state representative. They are both from Keizer. They work in the state government in Salem. Thatcher and Post are introducing a new law. They want Oregon to stop using daylight saving time. They want the state to stay on daylight saving time beginning November 7, 2021. This is the process: First, the state senators and representatives have to agree. Then the voters of Oregon must approve the change. Finally, the U.S. Congress in Washington, DC must also approve. Some people use an old phrase to remember what to do: Spring forward; fall back. "Spring" means both the season of the year and the verb to jump ahead suddenly. "Fall" means both the season and the verb to drop behind. Read by Eric Dodson. CC BY-NC-SA.
