Howland again focuses on photography Strange things are happening at the Howland Cultural Center's photo exhibit Focus on Photographers II. On Sept. 20, a mother and daughter from New Mexico stopped by. They are friends of Wilbur Norman, one of the artists, who lives outside Santa Fe. The following day, a couple from Queens - by way of Nepal - dropped in and named the monks in Norman's photograph, "Puja for the Safe Trek of Our Tour Group," which captures a cavernous temple scene. Curators Larry Kerschberg and Ronnie Sauers live in Cold Spring. He is a retired computer science professor active with the Beacon Photography Group on Facebook. Sauers, an interior designer, moved to Beacon in 1987. The bridge on East Main Street over Fishkill Creek is named after her and her late husband, Ron, who died in 2011. The exhibit's feng shui is apparent in the way she bookended Norman's display with two striking photos taken abroad - "Bat Man" and "Dance Preparations by Hul Wig Man." The wall flanking Ron Hershey's work features two images showcasing radiant blue hues shot in Morocco. Robert Tirrell, who lives in the city, contributed five photos. In his composition "Bird Gang," seven pigeons strike humorous poses while standing on the roof of a car. Hillary Clements, Ross Corsair, Amy Finkel and Hershey are locals. Clements layers multiple exposures inside the camera, an effect that creates captivating images of leaves and plants. Some look like collages, others resemble human creations. The print "Ferns" evokes an X-ray of the bumpy plants. Also employing an unorthodox technique, Ross Corsair's shots come "straight out of the camera, with no post-processing or AI enhancement," he says. Three deftly silhouetted images convey anonymity, such as "Assignation," an urban street scene taken from a bird's-eye view, where a lone figure with a blue and red umbrella punctuates the bland grays and browns. A creator of lush work, Hershey's misty, dreamy photo, "Li River Landscape, China," looks like a painting. Another shot, "Woman in a Narrow Passage, Morocco," appears to be posed, as the subject fits perfectly into the crevasse and wears a blue outfit that complements the background. Finkel points her camera at everyday subjects, like a dog dressed in a peacock costume baring its lower fangs; "Stanley" is adorable, but also a bit menacing. Another pup chomping on a ball in "New Veneers" appears to have a perfect set of teeth, as the toy's design aligns in the pooch's mouth. "Carousel" captures a girl's face in focus while the swirling background fades into a blur. As the exhibit's title suggests, this is the second go-round for Kerschberg and Sauers in the curatorial department. The exhibit's third iteration will return next year. "It takes a lot of time putting this together," he says, "but it's worth it because the work is so good." The Howland Cultural Center, at 477 Main St. in Beacon, is open from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and most Sundays. See howlandculturalcenter.org. "Focus on Photographers II" continues through Nov. 16.

This worship of the spiritual master, anything we do here, we can do every day and then think, “Okay, I'm done. Now I go to the next thing—when's prasādam?” But if we can enter into it with, first of all siddhanta, siddhānta baliyā citte nā kara alasa ihā ha-ite kṛṣṇe lāge sudṛḍha mānasa' (CC Adi 2.117)—means that we should understand precisely why we are doing it, especially we're worshiping the guru here, there, and everywhere so we should understand what guru-tattva means. It's not sentimentality. It is Kṛṣṇa's way of interacting with us—one of the many ways that He reaches out to us. And if we understand that, then our minds become very fixed in that process. Otherwise, our minds have to take dictation from somewhere else. That is: “I will compromise. I will maybe do halfway devotional service. Why get so fanatical? I should just be a little in touch.” But that doesn't last long, because gradually we become more on the side of the senses, the material world, and so forth. So we have a few opportunities in this lifetime—for Guru Pūjā, for celebrating Janmāṣṭamī, Rādhāṣṭamī—very few. If you count them up on a clicker, you'll see there's a finite number we get a chance. So if we take advantage while we're there—to be in full knowledge while we're doing these things, and be focused on what it means to us—and also follow the guru-paramparā, what we are getting through our guru-varga… Be careful. Follow it strictly. Otherwise, it becomes some boring ritual for anyone, and we can forget how fortunate we are. And also what a precarious situation we are in too. We can lose the opportunity at any moment. So we should be attentive. It's Ganesh Puja in India. Lord Ganesh is a God who seems like an animator's dream come true, but a God who removes obstacles should be much in demand right now and the last thing we should be doing is treating him like a cuddly toy.

Grace Gratitude and Bhagavad-gita Retreat and 75th Vyasa Puja Celebration of His Holiness Krishna Kshetra Swami ISKCON Jandelsbrunn, Simhachalam Temple, Germany August 10, 2025
Śrīla Prabhupāda, you have shown us the real wealth of life: the joy of cooperating together in devotional service to a pure devotee. You have given us the ultimate formula for fulfillment—not tit-for-tat exchanges or transactional relationships, but the mood of selfless giving, free from ego and ambition. You taught us that cooperation among devotees is not merely a strategy for organizational success; it is the very symptom of spiritual advancement. In a world torn by division, the ability of devotees to serve together in harmony is nothing short of miraculous. At ISKCON of Silicon Valley, we witness this miracle every day. Devotees come together not only to distribute your books, but to cook and serve prasādam with devotion, to dress and worship The Deities with care and attention, to clean the temple joyfully as an offering to you, to chant the holy names together, to teach and nurture the children of our community in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and to give newcomers a chance to catch hold of your mood and method of serving Kṛṣṇa. Each of these services is powerful on its own, but when we perform them without a sense of entitlement or desire for recognition but rather, when we execute them in the mood of cooperation for the sake of maintaining unity and purity of purpose in service to your mission—they become transcendental expressions of love. Obstacles dissolve, spiritual joy increases, and the power of sādhu-saṅga becomes tangible. In a letter to Gurukula teachers, you wrote, "We are persons and Kṛṣṇa is a person, and our relationship with Kṛṣṇa is always open as a voluntary agreement. That voluntary attitude, 'Yes, Kṛṣṇa, I shall gladly cooperate, whatever You say,' that ready willingness to obey is only possible if there is love. Forcing will not make me agree. But if there is love, oh, I shall gladly do it. That is bhakti. That is Kṛṣṇa consciousness." A medicine tablet, which contains fillers, is effective only because it contains an active ingredient. The active ingredient of your movement is voluntary service based on love, stimulated by loving exchanges in the process of hearing and chanting about Kṛṣṇa. In you, Śrīla Prabhupāda, we find no filler. Even a small dose of your vāṇī therefore can cure the disease of material life. You have given us the most precious gift: the knowledge that real happiness comes not from consumption but from contribution, not from income but from surrender, not from being served but from serving. That clarity of purpose—śuddha-bhakti—shines like a jewel amid the refuse like distractions, and entanglements of this world. And it is this essence that unites and inspires our community at ISKCON of Silicon Valley to continue your mission with enthusiasm and conviction. Śrīla Prabhupāda, we pray to imbibe even a fraction of your selfless spirit. Please bless us with the humility to put service before recognition, to put unity before individual ambition, and to put your pleasure before our own comforts. Let ISKCON of Silicon Valley always remain a beacon of cooperation in your service, a family that mirrors the miracle you began. Dear Śrīla Prabhupāda, on this sacred day of your divine appearance, I offer my humble obeisances again and again at your lotus feet. I pray for the humility to accept correction, the zeal to share Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and the patience to serve others in their spiritual journey. May I always remember that devotional service is about service, not status. Please bless me to purify my heart, to improve my chanting, and to remain forever protected at your lotus feet. My beloved Gurudev, everything meaningful in my life comes from you. Without your guidance, I would be lost in the waves of material desire, but by your mercy, I have found purpose, hope, and joy in serving Kṛṣṇa and his devotees. On this day of Vyāsa Pūjā, I renew my dedication to your mission. I pray that your books illuminate every home, that The Holy Name echoes in every heart, and that your movement thrives forever. May my life, every thought, word, and action, be a token of gratitude to you. All glories to you, Śrīla Prabhupāda, all glories to your ISKCON, and all glories to The Holy Name. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #vyasapuja #srilaprabhupada #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

O my Lord! Transcendental poets and experts in spiritual science could not fully express their indebtedness to You, even if they were endowed with the prolonged lifetime of Brahmā, for You appear in two features — externally as the ācārya and internally as the Supersoul — to deliver the embodied living being by directing him how to come to You. https://vedabase.io/en/library/sb/11/29/6 ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

Today is the most important day in the Buddhist calendar: Vesak / Visakha Puja, celebrating the birth, Supreme Awakening, and final Parinibbāna of the Buddha. As it's also Mother's Day in the Western calendar, Ajahn Dhammasiha speaks about the birth of the Bodhisatta, and the marvellous qualities of the Bodhisatta and his mother. Strictly speaking, we shouldn't refer to him as the 'Buddha' at his birth, but rather as the 'Bodhisatta', as he wasn't enlightened yet. However, the little baby could walk 7 steps and announce that it's his last birth immediately after delivery. You can read how the Buddha himself described the events surrounding his birth in: Majjhima Nikāya / Middle Length Discourses, #123 'Acchariya-Abbhuta-Sutta' / 'Wonderful and Marvellous'.Dhammagiri WebsiteOur Spotify PlaylistsNewsletterDhammagiri Youtube ChannelPics#buddha #babybuddha #vesak #dhammatalk #buddhism

Lama Zopa Rinpoche gives the oral transmission (lung) of the Guru Puja. He explains that taking the oral transmission is important because it has the continuity of blessings from Panchen Losang Chökyi Gyaltsen, who completed the path to enlightenment.Rinpoche says that he received the transmission from a few lamas—His Holiness, of course, and also Trijang Rinpoche and Ling Rinpoche.Rinpoche explains the many benefits of having received the transmission. It makes our recitations and explanations to others more powerful and beneficial to the mind. Rinpoche gives an example of the Arya Sanghata Sutra. Reciting this sutra just once after having received the lung has the same benefits as reciting it a hundred times without the lung. Also, when we reach a certain level on the path to enlightenment, there's a point at which you remember all the teachings for which you received the oral transmissions. All these teachings come to your heart instantly. Thus, there are huge differences between having received the lung and not having received the lung. For any prayer we recite, receiving the lung has a great effect. From April 10 to May 10, 2004, Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave extensive teachings during the Mahamudra Retreat at Buddha House in Australia. While the retreat focused on Mahamudra, Rinpoche also taught on a wide range of Lamrim topics. This retreat marked the beginning of a series of month-long retreats in Australia. Subsequent retreats were held in 2011, 2014, and 2018, hosted by the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo.Find out more about Lama Zopa Rinpoche, his teachings and projects at https://fpmt.org/

Perhaps one of the most important and foundational lectures we've ever done, this talk features a broad overview of Tantrik non-duality in the beginning and then moves on to make a case for a Vedic lifestyle and basic devotion as important foundations for more dramatic, esoteric, non-dual and transgressive practices of Goddess-oriented tantra. We also study the Vedic (and pre-Vedic) roots of Tantra and look at a few of the early schools of our tradition such as the Mīmāmsa, Pāśupata, Lakulīśa, Nyāya & Vaiśeshika to derive from them some grounding ideas for practicing Tantra safely! This lecture was given just after Shiva Ratri and Sri Ramakrishna's birthday and so we attempt to map the historical progression of ideas in Shaivism unto the life of Sri Ramakrishna where we see all these ideas expressed! In the digital networked age, people's attention often overlooks local problems in favour of global ones, which don't necessarily impact them in their daily lives, or over which they don't have a say due to the skewed Pareto distribution of power in modern day societies. Puja Ohlhaver, in her recent research paper ‘Community currencies', proposes a dual-currency model that prices attention and influence in each community, with the ultimate goal of creating a Gaussian distribution of power, either locally, or globally through the dynamic interaction of multiple local communities. This model allows community members to stake their currency to earn non-transferable governance rights, creating a substrate for decentralised societal coordination that favours social innovation.Topics covered in this episode:Puja's backgroundWeb3 research‘Community currencies'Pareto vs. Gaussian distributionsGlobal vs. local power distributionsThe community currencies modelMeritocracy vs. influenceQuadratic fundingGovernance, bribery and the crisis of legitimacyExperimenting with community currenciesEpisode links:Puja Ohlhaver on X'Community Currencies' Research Paper'Decentralized Society' Research PaperSponsors:Gnosis: Gnosis builds decentralized infrastructure for the Ethereum ecosystem, since 2015. This week Sandip celebrates a deity that has always been a bit more personal, but also worries about how the modern world is remaking her influence.
Lama Zopa Rinpoche highlights the importance of practicing Guru Puja (Lama Chöpa), as it integrates many important practices. He cites Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, who stated that the Guru Puja practice contains all the importance of the complete sutra and tantra. He also mentioned how His Holiness Song Rinpoche often praised the Lama Tsongkhapa tradition by expressing how Gyalwa Ensapa was different from Milarepa. They both achieved enlightenment in one brief lifetime during a degenerated time, but Gyalwa Ensapa did so while eating delicious food and living a comfortable life. The reason is because his heart practice was Lama Chöpa, which integrates the three deities: Yamantaka, Guhyasamaja, and Chakrasamvara.Lama Zopa says it is a very profound practice that will lead you to achieve enlightenment more quickly. Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo advised that this practice is like one key opening hundreds of doors of the Buddha's teaching. The main meaning of puja is pleasing the guru. It is only by doing so that you can achieve realizations and enlightenment.Lama Zopa urges us to make this important practice heartfelt; it shouldn't become mere words. He details the practice of generating strong bodhicitta, generating the deity, making offerings, blessing the offerings, taking vows, and dedicating the merit.

It is widely known that a healthy diet can provide essential nutrients and lead to a multitude of benefits, but growing evidence has highlighted important links between diet, nutrition, and brain health, particularly related to neurodegenerative disease. In this episode, Dr. Puja Agarwal discusses her research investigating the role that diet and nutrition may play in Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. Evidence from her studies and the work of others suggests that certain diets, including the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, are associated with brain health and may have the potential to delay the onset or slow progression of Parkinson's disease or other neurodegenerative conditions. We hear more about her ongoing MJFF-funded research project examining the role of diet in the progression of parkinsonian signs and its association with Lewy body pathologies, as well as future directions for this exciting line of research. Puja is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at Rush University. This podcast is geared toward researchers and clinicians. Language evaluations are challenging enough; but when we're evaluating multilingual and bilingual students, they become even more complex. When clinicians ask me about language evaluations, the questions are typically:What tools/protocols can I use? Who can I go to for help? How can I advocate for change if current policies don't support best practices? That's why I invited Prabhu Eswaran and Puja Goel to episode 186 of De Facto Leaders to help answer some of these questions as they relate to multilingual learners. Prabhu Eswaran is an ASHA certified school-based speech-language pathologist in Los Angeles, California. His areas of interests include child language disorders, communication disorders in culturally and linguistically diverse populations and technology in special education. He is now serving in the advisory board of MCCG SAC-ASHA's Executive Board. Puja Goel, MA, CCC-SLP, PNAP, (she/her/hers) is a multilingual school-based speech language pathologist (SLP) who has worked for the Chicago Public Schools and currently works in New Mexico as a supervising SLP. Puja recently completed her administrative licensure in the state of NM which allows her to work as an administrator in schools. Puja is a member of ASHA, CASE and appointed to NAP. She completed the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Leadership Development Program and Minority Student Leadership Program and served on the Multicultural Issues Board. Puja is a first-generation South Asian born in the United States. Puja can be contacted via email: pujagoel2020@gmail.com.In this episode, we discuss:✅What to do when standardized assessments aren't normed in a student's language. ✅Making a case for non-standardized data when standard scores don't provide quality information.✅Service planning for multilingual students and recommended resources✅Getting started with advocacy at the state and national level. In 2018, Puja Patel was named editor-in-chief of Pitchfork, the legendary music criticism publication. She had a vision for the site: make it more accessible, maybe a little less pretentious. Then, in January this year, Condé Nast announced that GQ would absorb Pitchfork. Immediate uproar ensued — both from fans and musicians. Puja left the company. Today, she talks about what happened, how she negotiated her own power within a legacy institution, and what's next for music criticism. Learn more about your ad choices.
