The White House border czar Tom Homan announced that at least 1,000 federal officers have left Minnesota as their ICE surge operation in the state comes to a close. That's according to an interview with CBS News Sunday. Homan said several hundred more will leave today and tomorrow. In the weeks that ICE agents were here at peak numbers, hundreds of reports of civil rights violations from protestors, legal observers, and other Minnesotans piled up at the office of the ACLU of Minnesota. They are still busy collecting and sorting accounts, and this past Friday the organization added the stories of more than 80 Minnesotans in a lawsuit against the federal government. The timing matters, because Washington is doing the most: the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is likely to shut down after Senate Democrats blocked a funding bill that didn't include limits on ICE practices. If it happens, the shutdown would also hit the TSA, FEMA, and the United States Coast Guard — just as Congress leaves town for a Presidents' Day recess.  Meanwhile, border czar Tom Homan claims ICE is ending deployments to Minnesota, though reporting suggests those deployments may not have actually ended — or possibly started. President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, announced Thursday that Operation Metro Surge is coming to an end in Minnesota. Homan told reporters the operation successfully reduced threats to public safety by detaining undocumented immigrants with criminal records. He cited "unprecedented levels of coordination" between state officials and local law enforcement as a key factor in the decision. The conclusion of this controversial surge comes after weeks of protests in Minneapolis and other cities over ICE's tactics, as well as tense congressional negotiations over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.
