Families of 9/11 just walked a petition into New York City Hall asking Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) to stay away from Friday's 25th anniversary memorial. More than a dozen relatives of the dead stood on the steps and said the mayor's presence turns a private hour of grief into a political photo. The Change.org petition started by Giovanni Galante — whose wife, Grace, was killed in the attacks — now has more than 102,000 signatures. They asked for one window: 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the National September 11 Memorial, where the names of 2,983 victims will be read. Mamdani has said he will be there. Cheri Sparacio, who lost her husband, Tom, on the 84th floor of the South Tower, put the line where families want it: “It's not about his religion or where he came from. It's about the policies he has today.” They pointed to his chief counsel, Ramzi Kassem, who represented an Al-Qaeda terrorist held at Guantánamo. Charles Wolf said Giuliani and Pataki held their hands after the attacks. “Mayor Mamdani has not shown any of that.” Mamdani says he loves the city and wants the week focused on families and first responders. Families answered that when he walks in, politics walks in with him — and this is their time to grieve. Of course the company's stock went up after the settlement, which tells you everything about who won. Bill Gates published a 5,784-word AI warning blog post saying there is "no plan" for the transition to the AI era, too late the hero, Bill. In medical news, the FDA approved a new pancreatic cancer drug that nearly doubles survival time compared to chemo alone — genuinely significant given that disease kills 7 out of 8 patients within five years — though at $40,000 a month, accessibility will be an issue. On the food safety beat, an emergency recall was issued for nearly 30,000 pounds of Argentinian beef sold in Florida and Texas, as Trump simultaneously told Glenn Beck he wants to reduce regulations on beef processing plants. During that same Glenn Beck call, Trump attempted to mourn Dolly Parton and ended up mostly saying she liked him, sure. Meanwhile, The CIA director's Moscow visit turned out to involve Russian intelligence officials rather than Putin directly, with the stated purpose being to warn Russia not to attack NATO — while Iran and Russia simultaneously announced a $25 billion nuclear energy deal and a Putin-Pezeshkian summit next week, so it's going great. Peter Schiff marks the 55th anniversary of August 15, 1971, the day Nixon closed the gold window and defaulted on the Federal Reserve's promise to redeem dollars in gold. He explains how deficit spending in the 1960s on the Great Society, Vietnam, and Apollo forced the choice between painful fiscal discipline and default, and how Nixon chose default disguised as reform. Schiff traces the fallout: the collapse of the dollar's purchasing power, gold soaring from $35 to $850 by 1980, stagflation that confounded Keynesians, and the erosion of single-income American households. Freed from gold's discipline, the government ran up massive debts, hollowed out the industrial base, and turned the world's largest creditor into its biggest debtor, with the national debt exploding from under $400 billion to over $28 trillion. He argues gold is as underpriced today as it was in 1971, that the Fed under Warsh is stoking the very inflation it claims to fight, and that just as the world went off the gold standard, it will soon go off the dollar standard with far more devastating consequences.
