Coal was an important commodity in early North Dakota, a resource that could promote the state. This worked out well for General W. D. It turned out that the land had huge coal deposits, and Washburn would come to own several coal mines in central North Dakota.

Our guest today is Major General Mick McGuire. Major General Michael T. McGuire, US Air Force (Retired) has dedicated nearly 38 years of his life to serving our country. From navigating aerial combat over Iraq to negotiating with state and federal legislators, “Mick” has a proven track record of leading diverse teams through challenging situations. From 2013-2021, McGuire served as the Adjutant General of the Arizona National Guard and, more recently, as the current Chairman of the Board for the National Guard Association of the United States, which is the voice for nearly 45,000 current and former National Guard officers throughout the country. The McGuire family has deep roots in Arizona, dating back to the 1930s, when his great grandfather settled in the state. Major General McGuire, USAF (Ret.) upheld this legacy, having lived in Arizona for much of his adult life. And now "Mick" McGuire is a 2022 Candidate for AZ U.S. Senate Seat. 1) The state of AZ currently has two Liberal Democrats serving as US Senators, Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly. You are running as a strong Constitutionalist Republican candidate. What makes you uniquely qualified to hold one of the seats of US Senator for AZ? 2) Stepping into the rough and tumble arena of Politics is not an easy decision. Was there a lightning rod moment that caused you to decide to run for US Senate, or was it a culmination of things? 3) You recently spoke at the Annual Meeting for the AZ State Rifle & Pistol Association. In your speech you described a time in which you were pressured to overstep the US Constitution by people in very high places. Please tell our audience about this incident and how you handled it. 4) Should you be elected, how will you use your role as US Senator to impact our Second Amendment Rights? 5) Besides the Second Amendment, what are the other major issues here in AZ that you will be working on from the Federal level of government should you be elected?

The wealth gap in America creates any number of problems—but perhaps the most pressing is its expansion of poverty. When this poverty intersects with a broken criminal justice system, it becomes criminalized. The cycles of poverty and incarceration can span generations, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Messenger of the St. Louis Post Dispatch has spent years covering the stories of the people affected. In his new book Profit and Punishment: How America Criminalizes the Poor in the Name of Justice, he exposes the tragedy of modern-day debtors' prisons, and how they destroy the lives of poor Americans swept up in a system designed to penalize the most impoverished. Review "Messenger is one of the few columnists―maybe the only one―in America whose beat is the poor who are preyed upon by public officials" ―St. Louise Magazine “With the keen eye and compassionate heart of an award-winning journalist, Messenger shows us that Ferguson is everywhere, putting a human face on the millions of Americans being crushed every year by cash register injustice.” ―Jeffrey Selbin, Chancellor's Clinical Professor of Law "Timely and important... should enrage anyone who comes to understand it―and Profit and Punishment is the perfect place to start that understanding." ―Shelf Awareness "An eye-opening, relevant, and heartbreaking account on the epidemic of criminalized poverty.” ―Kirkus “Explores the byzantine paths of so-called justice… Profit and Punishment is persuasive and enraging, a book that will stir readers from both sides of the aisle to support reform.” ―Booklist “A heartbreaking study of how the American justice system is weighted against the poor. … Interweaving hard evidence with harrowing firsthand stories, this is a powerful call for change.” ―Publishers Weekly "A shocking account... In plainspoken and powerful language, Messenger exposes the unconscionable, unethical and utterly heartbreaking. Read these riveting accounts and be stirred to action!" ―Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, Pulitzer Prize Finalist, author of Race for Profit "Tony Messenger's Pulitzer Prize-winning series on debtors' prisons in Missouri made a serious difference in real people's lives and his book will be a must read for a nation seeking a bipartisan path forward on criminal justice reform." ―Claire McCaskill, former US Senator and analyst for MSNBC “An intimate, raw, and utterly scathing look at the ordinary and everyday ways in which America's criminal justice system has directly increased the poverty of the many, and dramatically increased the profits of the few, in recent years. All will have zero doubt after reading this devastating account of the full scale human rights crisis that has been wrought by these policies that they must act, immediately, to overhaul them." ―Heather Ann Thompson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Blood in the Water --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Many people say that “politics is a blood sport.” If you follow the news and politics, you wonder how opposing members of Congress can even stand to be in the same room with each other. It wasn't always like this. In the 90's, during the Clinton years, even with all the attacks, both personal and political, Bill Clinton managed to work pretty effectively with Newt Gingrich and the GOP leadership. Back then, there were also a number of Senators on both sides of the aisle who were gentlemanly and actually worked hard for love of country. Today's guest is one of these gentlemen - who was - and still remains well respected on both sides of the political aisle. Senator Joe Lieberman is the author of the new book, “The Centrist Solution: How we Made Government Work and can make it work again.” And after the political earthquake that took place this past Tuesday, the timing of his book couldn't have been more timely. Senator Lieberman was regarded as the “conscience of the Senate” because of his integrity, ability to work well with Republicans, and was widely regarded as someone whose word was his bond – a rare commodity in Washington these days. The book will give you insight into Senator Lieberman's political accomplishments, reveals his sense of humor, and he shares very important lessons for those seeking office who want to make a difference and get things done! The senator stresses the major issue of extreme environmental groups and politicians attempting to curry favor acting on emotion rather than science and facts when it comes to subjects such as responsible logging and grizzly bear management. Case Profile for The Skinner It's a  race against time as The Skinner is close to accessing the software that will give him full control of the most elaborate microchips in the industry. All that is standing between him and his glory is Senator Panabaker. Yes it turns out that good old Cynthia rose up the ranks and is now a US Senator and still loathes Harold and the team just as much as before. That is unless they are looking to do good. She agrees to let Cooper, Aram, and Ressler back in to the FBI as well as open up the old Post Office black site. Also new team member Dembe joins the team to take Liz's old spot. The team with Red's help does eventually save the day but in true Blacklist fashion a win for the task force also is a win for Red. An old procedure in the line of The Skinner is to allow two former Skinners the ability to revoke the power of the current Skinner and select a different successor.  Well it just so happens that the new Skinner is none other than Raymond Reddington.  Be sure to answer our profiling question of the week: Will the Task Force return to the Post Office? Visit our feedback page to leave a response or call +1 (304) 837-2278. Today on the Matt Walsh Show, a school in Kentucky holds a “man pageant” where high school boys in lingerie gave lap dances to their teachers while a school in Florida brought elementary schoolers to a gay bar for a field trip. What is the issue with all of this? Is it an infringement on “parental rights”? Yes, but that's not even half of the problem. Also, an uncharacteristically impressive performance from Republicans as they interrogate Attorney General Garland during a Senate hearing. And a woman is brutally assaulted on a train in New York while dozens of people stand by and watch. This is becoming a theme. Plus, a professor at Rutgers claims that black and brown people lived in peaceful harmony across the globe until white people ruined it all. And Anthony Weiner's estranged wife says she was sexually assaulted by a US Senator. The problem is that her sexual assault story doesn't feature an actual sexual assault.  Daily Wire just signed ousted ESPN sportscaster Allison Williams who resisted Disney's vaccine mandate for a new sports series. Milo Ventimiglia (@MiloVentimiglia) is an actor, director and producer. And one of the hottest stars in America. He's also a really nice, hard-working and fascinating guy. And a guy with very strong opinions about everything from Afghanistan, to Senator Joe Manchin's obstructionism, to a strike in Hollywood by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) union. Milo is a fighter who stands up for what he believes in--not just in the roles he plays--but also in real life. And this is Milo the fighter as candid as you'll ever hear him.  After early recognition for roles with Sylverstor Stallone in Rocky Balboa, on Gilmore Girls and the NBC series Heroes, Milo went on to star as Jack Pearson in the massively popular NBC drama, This Is Us. Now, the humble son of a Vietnam vet is a household name. He has received three Emmy nominations and won a Screen Actors Guild Award. But over a decade before that, Ventimiglia toured Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan with the USO in support of US troops. And he's done it multiple times since.  Now, he's using his star power to help veterans and to stand with working people. He's supported veterans charities, and for the last month, has been making phone calls to US Senators to help a generation of men and women who've served since 9/11 create a Global War on Terror Memorial on The National Mall in Washington.  Milo's been a friend of our host, Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff), for many years. They've worked together on issues, appeared together on political talk shows, and spent late nights hanging out in Hollywood getting pancakes. Milo shares the inside scoop on what's to come on This Is Us, he'll take us behind a red carpet with Nicole Kidman, and he'll talk about creating a super action hero movie with past Independent Americans guests like, Bradley Whitford, Jeffrey Wright, Wes Chatham, Jon Bernthal, Jane Horton and Henry Rollins. You will be entertained. And inspired.  It's another conversation that keeps it real. The kind to help you stay vigilant. Because  eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. Our host, national security and political analyst and Army veteran Paul Rieckhoff takes you behind the scenes for candid conversations with top leaders from all backgrounds. It's a bold and blunt perspective you won't find anywhere else on the media landscape. You can support the show and join our dynamic community of listeners by joining the IA Patreon community.
