Part II of our Depp Dive into the world of Gonzo with pod fave Dane (@dmeissler) to talk about Ralph Steadman and his very British ideals in a very American movement. For No Good Reason is a lovely dive into Steadman's work and a must for anybody even remotely interested in the Gonzo movement. Johnny Depp is barely in this movie! That's a good thing! Philly Who? launched three years ago this week in May of 2018. Today we are celebrating by republishing our one-year anniversary live episode with Mike Solomonov and Steve Cook. The pair are the chefs behind Cooknsolo, a collection of restaurants including Zahav, Federal Donuts, Dizengoff, Goldie, and Abe Fisher. At the time of this interview, Cook and Solo had together accrued 4 James Beard Awards for their restaurants and cookbooks. Just 5 days later, they took home their 5th, as Zahav won the award for Best Restaurant in the country. In this episode, you’ll hear how these two restauranteurs came together to bring Israeli cuisine to Philadelphia. In doing so, they transformed the Philly food scene. But, it wasn’t always sunshine and hummus. As you’ll hear, when Zahav first opened, it struggled mightily, and was in danger of failing thanks to the 2008 financial crash, an intimidating menu, and the revelation to Steve that Mike was struggling with addiction. Hear the story of how Cook and Solo overcame these challenges, and in the 10 years since have built a restaurant empire! Thanks to all who attended the live show - we raised $900 for Broad Street Ministry! This Episode is supported by Crossbeam. Crossbeam is hiring! Check out their available positions here.

Jenna is joined by musician, performer, and TikTok sensation Carleigh Spence (@teenscientist) for a special CHRISTMAS EPISODE about what is widely considered Johnny Depp's worst movie, The Astronaut's Wife! They talk the Pirates of the Caribbean section of Kingdom Hearts II, Charlize Theron's role choices pre-Oscar win, and giggle their way through the bat shit plot of this movie. Jenna continues to hate watching Johnny kiss. Carleigh is a big fan of Charlize's passionate "mirror monologues" and wonders if she had a script or if the filmmakers just said to kind of... talk. Jenna is joined by Philadelphia and New York critic, Cameron Kelsall (@CameronPKelsall on twitter) ! Shifting gears a little bit, they talk about a lesser known Depp title... Sally Potter's The Man Who Cried. They discuss slow motion hair flips, art house sensuality, Christina Ricci's eyes, and the movie's star: a majestic white horse. Because of this film, this is now a Cate Blanchett podcast. Organizations Mentioned: Marsha P. Jenna is joined by the talented singer, actor, and Elm Street scholar Carlos Castillo (Instagram: @cemanuelcastillo)! They deep dive into the iconic Nightmare and (almost) all of the sequels, since Jenna has only seen the first two. A celebration of crop tops, Heather Langenkamp, and a bed full of blood. Johnny Depp's first film role. It's wild to see "Introducing... Johnny Depp" in the credits. There is a hiccup at the 52 minute mark, so apologizes in advance. I'm new in town. Join Rebecca Kirkpatrick for a conversation with Mike Dahl, Executive Director of Broad Street Ministry and The Rev. Laura Colee, Pastor, at Broad Street. In their conversation together Mike and Laura share the ways the pandemic has impacted their work of Radical Hospitality in Center City Philadelphia.
This week, we feature an interview with Mike Dahl and Rev. Laura Colee of Broad Street Ministry, where Mike serves as the Executive Director and Rev. Collee serves as pastor. A worshipping community practicing radical hospitality across the street from the Kimmell Center in Center City, Broad Street Ministry continues to cultivate meaning, extend welcome, and host numerous social services alongside their diverse neighbors- collectively leaning into God’s future for a more just society. If you remember, in 2017 Broad Street Ministry was also one of the eight recipients of our 300th Anniversary Mission Campaign. In response to our discerned call to elevate education of children, disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, and work towards restorative justice, the dollars Broad Street received helped launch a new initiative that provides vital services of support to those re-tering society after a period of incarceration. Listen into the conversation with these gifted practitioners of the gospel as they share about this initiative, among many others, and they live into a new season of faithful witness in our city.
