Nissa Bagelman grew up in the book business. In fact, she spent many childhood days at a popular indie bookstore, Reedmor Books, in Center City Philadelphia in the early 90s.It was the family business. Her great grandfather opened Reedmor in 1928, and he passed it down to generations of Bagelmans. But when buying books online became commonplace, the Reedmor business suffered. In the early 2000s, the Bagelmans made the difficult decision to close down their stores. Now, 20+ years later, Reedmor is back ... with a twist. From the brand new Reedmor Books & Brews in downtown Portsmouth, host Troy Farkas sits down with Nissa to discuss how and why she's reopened the family business in Portmouth, the nitty-gritty of the book business, why it's so difficult for indie bookstores to survive (and why this store will buck the trend), and so much more.CHAPTERS:Reedmor's extensive history (00:00)Nissa's work in the publishing industry (02:50)Why indie bookstores fail (16:25)The motivation for re-opening Reedmor (20:02)How Book 'N Bar's end led to Reedmor's rebirth (24:14)The chaotic re-opening of Reedmor (28:50)The Seacoastonline article that blew up Reedmor (32:16)Reedmor's break from traditional bookstores (34:25)How the Seacoast has received Reedmor so far (44:00)Reedmor's big plans for 2025 (47:15)Advice to younger self (53:51)Nissa Bagelman is the owner of Reedmor Books & Brews, a popular new bookstore located in the former Raleigh Wine Bar in downtown Portsmouth. From Bethesda Project, Tina Pagotto, MSW, Chief Executive Officer, and Kharisma Goldston, Director of Shelter, discussed the non-profit, which celebrates its 45 year of service this year. Founded in 1979 as a one-time service project for women, the mission has grown to 11 sites throughout Center City Philadelphia for individual adults who are chronically homeless and struggle with severe and persistent mental illness, serious medical conditions and/or addiction receive food, shelter and referrals to much-needed services. Bethesda Project staff reach out to those most reluctant to enter shelter with tenacious, dignified care and help them transition to housing. These sites range from emergency shelter to safe haven provisions to supportive housing to independent living spaces. Tina discussed their three concentrations, emergency shelter for any individual who is in need of shelter, entry level housing for those experiencing chronic homelessness through mental illness, addiction or other causes, and supportive services to help maintain their housing. Once in shelter, Bethesda Project meets needs from clothing, medical attention, and meal services while connecting their guests with support programming. Kharisma discussed Bethesda Project’s Our Brothers' Place, run in conjunction with the City of Philadelphia and provides emergency shelter for 149 men and supportive services for an additional 50 daily. Individuals experiencing homelessness receive warm meals and social services, taking the first step in accessing housing in the community. She encourages everyone to keep the emergency shelter number ready – 215-232-1984 to help get the homeless off the street and into safety during the winter. They talked about the increasing numbers affected by homelessness in Philadelphia, causes include the affordable housing crisis - lack of inventory, high rent and low incomes, and the lack of adequate access to mental health and medical services. They ask our support, in cash, in volunteering and for in-kind donations. Their Young Professionals have a events and activities throughout the year including Trivia at Future Days Beer Co. in Northern Liberties on January 23, with $2 per beer is donated back to BP, and Bethesda itself will celebrate their 45th Anniversary Dinner at Daylesford Abbey with their Founder Abbot Domenic Rossi — Bethesda Project. Their annual Party & Auction is scheduled for May. To learn more, to donate, to volunteer, to attend a fundraising event, go to bethesdaproject.org.

It was a great discussion that focused on how the City of Philadelphia government has handled this development, as well as the pros and cons of placing this arena proposal right in Center City Philadelphia. Topics that O.J. and Jeff dove into:-How has the city government handled the arena proposal from both a governance and community standpoint rightout outside of Chinatown?-Should the public believe Apollo Global Management Group's and the Sixers rosey picture they've painted about what this will mean for this section of the city?-Analyzing the pros and cons of this arena project.-What are the chances that this project can and will come together and truly benefit everyone involved? All of this and much more this week on Table Talk!Head over to our website for all of our podcasts and more: philadelphiasportstable.com.Follow us on BlueSky:Jeff: @jeffwarren.bsky.socialErik: @brickpollitt.bsky.socialFollow us on Threads:Jeff: @mrjeffwarrenErik: @slen1023The Show: @philadelphiasportstableFollow us on Twitter/X:Jeff: @Jeffrey_WarrenErik: @BrickPollittThe Show: @PhiladelphiaPSTFollow the show on Instagram: instagram.com/philadelphiasportstable.

"From one "Black Man" to another "Black man": who are you voting for?" Renaldo McKenzie, Creator and Host took to the streets to interview over 100 black men in Center City Philadelphia asking: Who are you supporting for President and Why, and what is the mood like in your family, neighborhood and workplace, what are they saying, who are they voting for and why? This episode features the first twelve (12) conversations; and it promises to be powerful as African American men discuss why they will or will not vote for the first African American/South Asian Woman. In, fact, we had some major debates as several men joined in while we were interviewing other men about who they will vote for. Some boldly shouted "Trump!" even if he is racist, they will vote for him. Others say "women are too strict!" pointing to the strictness of Mayor Cherelle Parker. What was interesting is that men who seem to be interested in making money under the table promoted "Trump" and one man stated that the Democrats represent the party of Jim Crowe; even though we are in 2024 and that is no longer the case. Yet, many have voted already, or will vote for Harris, some for Trump. It seems to be a split, down the middle in PA. What was interesting is that African American men supporting Trump hoping to get COVID type payout are not concerned with the accusation of Trump inciting an insurrection, and do not remember George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tyre Nichols and Eddie Irrie Zarry; and the police brutality that defined Trump's term where he supported the police and showed no remorse for the blatant attack on "black" peoples by the police and the system. In stead, Trump continues to benefit from the same Police Union who defended the brutality of their cops on "black" people. Yet, "Black" people are out there defending and promoting the same man that has the support of his dogs who defend discrimination and police brutality and extra-judicial killings. Black people forget what has been done to them by those advocating for let's "make America Great Again," an America yesterday that has oppressed, impoverished and destroyed the lives of "black" folk or African Americans. They forget or have no idea about how economic policy and conditions give rise to economic situations such as inflation. Prices are high today largely because of the 4 years of COVID-19 where there was very little productivity. However, Americans were getting payouts, but "black" men were getting pittance and billionaires were getting millions. By the time Harris and Biden came into office they have to now fix the economy as Obama did, applying economic policies to restrict the economy while protecting poor people's lives during these contractionary period. "Black People forget the Affordable Act and the ways it is helping the lives of the poor, middle class or working black Americans who stand to loose a lot if Trump is able to overturn Obamacare. Nevertheless, the "black men were resolute about their support for or against Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. Twin Brothers and host of The Neoliberal Round News Round-Up, Ricardo and Renaldo will discuss these stories and interviews this weekend on The Neoliberal Round News Round-Up. As we close out the month of June, enjoy this short episode from Center City Philadelphia where we captured a bit of the event: Celebration of Music Month, by the Thinker Maker Society, who was wrapping up an event in Dilworth Love Park center city. It was a buzz with life, fun, fellowship as people listened to the music, and checked out the vendors who had booths at the event highlighting and selling their talents and goods, in the updated park awash with waterworks as part of its decor. We interviewed Darnell, one of the Organizers of the event and interviewed some of the vendors and patrons. Visit us at https://theneoliberal.com. Send us a Text Message. When Kat Gavin was born, her mother was only 18 years old. And as a result, Kat's crib was right next to the stereo. So to say Kat grew up “with music” would be an understatement. After a stint working record retail in the malls of Northeast Philadelphia, Kat made her way into Center City Philadelphia and got a job at Tower Records South Street. It was there she met, worked, and bonded with so many of “her people”. It was there she met her former husband, Geoff Gavin, and raised a family with him. At South Street Kat did it all; sales clerk, cashier, buyer, Supervisor, Key Holder, Administrative Assistant…And then there were the In Stores; The Cramps, G Love & Special Sauce, The Roots, Morrissey, and a host of others. Kat especially remembers the South Street store's 10th Anniversary Party when she had to help the Phillie Phanatic get dressed and Hall & Oates took over the staff break room for hours, not letting anybody in. When the Tower Avenue of the Arts store opened up in 1999, Kat moved to the new digs and proved to be an invaluable part of the team. A completely new group of people and yet it was still Tower Records. But being in Center City, there were always odd goings on. The morning Kat opened the door at 7:30am to be met near the front of the store by a homeless man who had been locked in overnight, begging her not to call the Police. Kat also recollects the John Mayer in-store when, after an acoustic performance, Mayer stopped signing autographs and walked out of the store to the consternation of hundreds of girls and their mothers. Kat wraps things up by telling us about visiting the Ave of the Arts store a couple of years ago, the weird feelings she felt, and the need to get the hell out of there. Join us for this jawn. You'll be glad you did.
Show and tell: The Parrot Pepe and his owner Jerry met up with me for the podcast in Center City Philadelphia to show and tell: talking about his parrot Pepe. Flanked by onlookers while filming and recording, the duo laughed and chirped about their time together and how their relationship provides catharsis as it facilitates a kind of therapy. Pepe took center stage flying and pitching or the onlookers and even sat on my shoulder and picked at my ear and hair. It was a joyous short moment that was full of love, and good times. At the end Renaldo added a short music as the outro where he sings and play music. The episode is dynamic and short. Looking for a new take on two of your favorite things to eat? Then we highly recommend trying out Deke's Bar-B-Que, which has several locations including their new Cloud Kitchen that opened about one month ago. Derek "Deke" Denmead joined us on the show for a deep dive into how he and his wife met, and eventually established Deke's BBQ. I know that it was wonderful hearing how they began, but even better is the mouth-watering menu options that they offer, including their Brisket Cheesesteak, mac and cheese, cornbread, and so much more! From an established business to new ones--we cover it all, which is why we spoke with Mardel West, the Owner of the brand-new Bangin Grub located inside Liberty One in Center City Philadelphia! Mardel and our hosts pulled back the veil on what it takes to start a business, including advice on how to prepare for financial, technical, and culinary upheavals. Afterwards, we bit into some of Bangin Grub's new menu options, scratch-made sauces, and unique desserts!Lastly, we spoke with Samuel Kennedy, Co-Founder of Culinary Harvest and Berwyn Farmers Market off of the Main LIne. Not only does Samuel share the amazing locally-sourced products, gifts, foods, and more from area small businesses, he works at Birchrun Hills Farm as an expert cheesemaker. The Berwyn Farmers Market offers so much to taste and enjoy, and per Samuel, you can shop for your weekly grocery list and fill your fridge with farm-fresh products weekly. What is even more important, you can build relationships with the farmers and vendors who live, grow, and produce in your community-creating the opportunity to know exactly what goes into what you eat and knowing you're supporting the community!
Tragedy struck a Macy's store in Center City Philadelphia on Monday morning, resulting in the death of a security guard and injuries to another following an attempted shoplifting incident that escalated into a violent confrontation. The Philadelphia Police Department is investigating the incident, which has left the community and the retail giant in shock. The incident unfolded around 10:45 a.m. in a Macy's store just one block from City Hall. According to authorities, the male suspect was attempting to steal several hats when he was intercepted by store security personnel. What began as a routine theft prevention effort took a horrifying turn as the situation escalated rapidly. According to local news reports, the suspect left the store briefly but returned approximately 15 minutes later. It was during this return that he launched a brutal attack, stabbing a 30-year-old security guard in the neck. The assailant's motive for such a violent response remains under investigation. A second security guard, a 23-year-old man, attempted to intervene in the unfolding tragedy but tragically became a victim himself. The suspect stabbed him in the face and arm, inflicting severe injuries. Police have not yet disclosed the condition of the injured guard. The 30-year-old security guard who suffered the initial attack was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The suspect, whose identity has not been released at this time, fled from the Macy's store after the violent episode. Authorities quickly launched a search for the assailant, leading to a dramatic pursuit through the city's subway system. The suspect was eventually apprehended around noon, bringing a sense of relief to the community. In response to the tragic incident, a Macy's spokesperson issued a statement expressing the company's profound sorrow: "We are heartbroken about the incident that took place today at Macy's Center City. The store will temporarily remain closed as we work with law enforcement on this investigation and defer any further comments about the case to them. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority." The incident has left the Philadelphia community in mourning and has underscored the challenging and sometimes dangerous situations that security personnel may face while performing their duties. Investigations into the motive behind the attack and the circumstances leading to this tragedy are ongoing. As the city grapples with the aftermath of this shocking event, questions regarding security protocols and safety measures in retail environments may come to the forefront. In the meantime, support and condolences are pouring in for the families of the security guards involved, as well as for the Macy's community affected by this senseless act of violence. Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by telling of multiple stories that broke over the weekend. First, Dom references the rampant antisemitism that broke out in Center City Philadelphia with pro-Palestine protests, telling of his disgust with the Kristallnacht-like language. Then, Dom tells about a stabbing at the famous Macy's today, expressing his regret that the City has devolved as far as it has, telling that 3 individuals who have been stabbed are loss prevention employees. Then, Dom reflects upon his weekend, telling of a great event held by guests Scott Presler and Sam Oropeza hoping to drive mail-in balloting for Pennsylvania, noting the strategic advantages of Republicans taking hold in the Philadelphia region. Then, Dom welcomes back in WIP legend Angelo Cataldi, author of Loud: How a Shy Nerd Came to Philadelphia and Turned up the Volume in the Most Passionate Sports City in America, to discuss the horrible performance by our Philadelphia Eagles against the San Francisco 49ers. First, Cataldi analyzes the game, talking about which portions of the team were exposed against arguably the best team in the NFL, telling of the importance of solid linebackers. Also, Angelo offers his opinion on Dom the Security Guard getting involved in a player scuffle, and explains his continued frustration with the NCAA. (Photo by Getty Images)

First, Dom asks Liz for her overall thoughts on the debate, telling of her surprise that Nikki Haley has taken the mantle as the anti-Trump candidate, noting that she did very well in doing so. Also, Dom asks for Liz to take listeners inside the room when attendees cheered Haley's stance on Ukraine, silencing rebuttals from Vivek Ramaswamy, with Liz noting that the crowd reaction was more based on personality than it was Haley's stance on Ukraine. This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily News Brief for Thursday, June 15th, 2023. New Saint Andrews: Today’s culture shifts like sand, but New Saint Andrews College is established on Christ, the immovable rock. The college is a premier institution that forges evangelical leaders who don’t fear or hate the world. To find out more, visit: nsa.edu There has been some drama at this years’ Southern Baptist Convention over whether or not to disfellowship Pastor Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church. Before we get to the decision, Rick Warren and Al Mohler had a mini debate on the issue… https://twitter.com/i/status/1668999347420164100 - Play Video And here’s the result! https://www.christianitytoday.com/news/2023/june/saddleback-sbc-women-pastors-appeal-rick-warren-southern-ba.html Southern Baptists Reject Rick Warren’s Saddleback Appeal Nobody expected Rick Warren’s appeal to be successful—not even Rick Warren. But he still stood up in front of 13,000 Southern Baptists gathered in New Orleans to make his case. For messengers at the SBC annual meeting, employing women pastors was not an agree-to-disagree issue. A vast majority—88 percent—voted to uphold the decision made back in February to disfellowship Saddleback. The vote concludes two years of scrutiny and criticism toward the California megachurch for ordaining female pastors from its stage, welcoming a female teaching pastor to preach on Sundays, and naming a female campus pastor. This was the only chance to appeal. After the vote, Warren said he wasn’t counting the appeal to succeed. Instead, “I wanted to push the conversation that’s been stagnant for years.” “I wanted to speak up for millions of Southern Baptist women … I believe their spiritual gifts, their leadership gifts and talents, are being wasted,” said Warren, who considered himself well-positioned to make the case given his prominence, “tender heart, and thick skin.” But the messengers were largely unified against the appeal. As Warren offered up arguments for Saddleback, Southern Baptists online and at events ahead of the meeting countered with their own defense of the SBC’s historic stance and their own complementarian convictions. The messengers also voted to uphold decisions to disfellowship Fern Creek Baptist, another church removed for having a female pastor, and Freedom Church, which was found to have mishandled abuse allegations. At the direction of SBC president Bart Barber, the messengers were largely silent as the results of the appeals were announced on Wednesday morning. A small smattering of applause broke out from the back of the giant hall when the Saddleback results were read. This year was the first time Southern Baptists have removed churches over female pastors, declaring Saddleback and four others “no longer in friendly cooperation” with the convention. https://notthebee.com/article/paul-ryan-calls-on-gop-to-stop-focusing-on-the-culture-war-calling-it-polarizing Paul Ryan calls on GOP to stop focusing on the culture war, calling it "polarizing." Guys, pack it in! Paul Ryan thinks you're being too divisive. https://twitter.com/i/status/1668604854539804674 - Play Video Let's see, the left wants perfectly healthy kids who have been convinced that they're in the wrong body to chop their privates off. They want abortion on demand until birth, and, heck, even after birth sometimes. They want drag queens to be able to strip and twerk in front of kids wherever they want. And if you oppose that, according to Paul Ryan, YOU are the one who's divisive. Yes, first let's fix the unbearably big debt crisis and China policy. Then we can leave a better America for our kids. Oh, wait, they're all aborted and mutilated now? And America is a shell of its former self because the culture has been given over to people in the rainbow jihad? Well, at least we got that GDP under control! Of course, the thinks Ryan cares about are important. But if we cave on the culture war, what exactly are we fighting for? https://thepostmillennial.com/former-philly-starbucks-manager-wins-25-6-million-after-being-fired-for-being-white?utm_campaign=64487 Former Philly Starbucks manager wins $25.6 million after being fired for being white A former regional manager for Starbucks was awarded $25.6 million on Monday after a federal jury in New Jersey unanimously found that she had been fired because of her race. Shannon Phillips, who is white, received $25 million in punitive damages and $600,000 in compensatory damages. She is reportedly seeking further compensation for lost wages. Phillips was terminated in 2018 in response to backlash against Starbucks after two black men, Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson, were arrested while waiting for a business associate at one of the many Philadelphia locations she oversaw. Employees at the Center City Philadelphia cafe called the police on the pair after they asked to use the washroom but hadn't ordered anything. Phillips claimed in her 2020 lawsuit that her firing had been racially motivated. She said she was targeted despite not having had any direct influence on the decision to call the police. Her allegations were backed up by the testimony of Paul Sykes, the black supervisor of the employee who made the 911 call that day. Sykes argued that the fact he did not face any disciplinary action while Phillips was let go showed that Starbucks had acted in a manor that exhibited racial bias. The coffee giant tried to claim that Phillips had been fired for being an ineffective regional manager, but they failed to convince even a single member of the jury. The Starbucks employee in 2018 had called 911 claiming Nelson and Robinson were "trespassing" after they violated company policy by asking to use the washroom, which they said was only for paying customers. Cops showed up, and hauled the pair out of the cafe as onlookers recorded the interaction on their phones. The men were released from custody hours later after the district attorney found that they hadn't committed any crimes. The incident sparked backlash against Starbucks, and Phillips alleged that she had been used as a scapegoat by the company to show that they were not racist. Nonetheless, protests persisted, and Starbucks eventually shut down hundreds of locations across the country for one day so that staff could undergo racial bias training. Nelson and Robinson settled with Starbucks for an undisclosed amount. Now finally, it’s time for my favorite topic sports! https://fox8.com/sports/denver-nuggets-win-first-nba-title-beat-miami-heat-in-five-games/ Denver Nuggets win first NBA title, beat Miami Heat in five games The Denver Nuggets have won their first NBA championship in team history, beating the Miami Heat in Game 5 on Monday. The Nuggets edged out the Heat, 94-89, in Denver, overcoming dreadful shooting and a late flurry from Miami’s Jimmy Butler. Center Nikola Jokic, had 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Nuggets, who missed 20 of their first 22 3-point attempts and seven of their first 13 free throws but figured out how to close out the series on their home floor. Jokic, who finished as the runner-up to Joel Embiid in the MVP race, was named to the All-NBA Second Team. He nearly averaged a triple-double over the season with 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game over the 69 games he played. Butler scored eight straight points to help the Heat take an 87-86 lead with 2:45 left after trailing by seven. He made two more free throws with 1:58 remaining to help Miami regain a one-point lead. Then, Bruce Brown got an offensive rebound and tip-in to give the Nuggets the lead for good. Butler finished with 21 points for the Heat. The Nuggets finished the regular season with 53 wins and 29 losses, the best record in the Western Conference and fourth-best overall for the NBA. They were one of 11 teams to have never won a championship. This is the first NBA championship for the Nuggets, who joined the league from the American Basketball Association in 1976 along with the New York (now Brooklyn) Nets, Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs.

“No matter how bad things are and what you have to overcome, you can find pure joy in spite of it all,” says Sandy Joy Weston. Holli & Jeanna want to bottle up her passion, enthusiasm and joy into an elixir and give it to everyone for free. What a beautiful world that would be. Sandy Joy lit us up and she will to you too! As a fiercely independent child, growing up virtually on her own; she unknowingly found her superpower. In her quest to feel good, she began a daily practice with intentional words, movement and laughter. She dreamed big and grew up to be a huge success. Now she inspires all ages of people through her books, speeches, and practices. Whatever she does she does it with the utmost joy and love. She shows up for people without an ulterior motif. She says her success is because she tapped into her heart space, love and joy and she uses the same practice whether it's for one view or one million views. Sandy Joy studied people who were joyful and all of them started their day with something powerful. Life didn't happen to them, they happened to life. Everyone has the power within themselves to change their lives. Sandy Joy says 1-3 minutes of positive power thought everyday can change your day and change your life. Do this for 30 days to create a habit. Sandy Joy walks the talk in a billboard sort of way - she left Jeanna and Holli an extra razzle dazzle and smiles abound. It's all within us - don't go looking outside yourself. More about Sandy Joy Westin: Sandy Joy Weston M.Ed. received her Master's degree in Exercise Physiology from Temple University, and achieved her Bachelor of Science in Dance from West Chester University. She began her journey as a health club owner when she opened an in-home private training company called Specialty Fit. She then proceeded to open the first Weston Fitness in Bala Cynwyd, PA with the help of her mentors. After much success, she continued to open two more health clubs including one in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, PA. Sandy's vivacious personality and positive attitude made her impossible to ignore, so when Philadelphia's NBC 10 caught wind of her, they approached her to become their fitness expert. During her time with NBC 10 she hosted fitness segments with the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, and the 76ers. Her great TV personality took her to the Discovery Channel where she was the featured trainer on the Reality TV show “Health Cops”. Sandy also created the nationally recognized Philly Street Line Dance to help combat Philly's “fattest city” label in 2001, which she taught all over the city. An ever rising star in Philadelphia's fitness scene, Sandy became the first female trainer for the Philadelphia Flyers and personally worked with Eric Lindros, Ed Snider, and Pat Croce. Sandy also worked with the Philadelphia 76ers dance team when she choreographed and performed a half time routine. Sandy continues to be an icon for Philadelphia fitness and well being motivation. The past five years, Sandy has been focusing on SJW Productions, an international company whose main mission is to highlight all the positive in the world and help people come together to reach their individual and common goals. She does this through her podcasts, “Let's Keep It Real” & “Positive Bitch Lady”, her books, Train Your Head & Your Body Will Follow and My 30-Day Reset Journal, and her workshops. She is also traveling the world as a Keynote Speaker specializing in wellness, fitness, and women empowerment. Sandy's outlook on life inspires every single person to live with a little more joy. Target is closing its Washington Square store in Center City Philadelphia. The store on the 1100 block of Chestnut Street will close for good on May 13.A Target spokesperson says they're taking the action after multiple years of working to improve performance."To the guests who shopped with us at Washington Square, we appreciate you shopping with us and hope you'll continue to visit us at another location close to you or via Target.com and the Target app," the spokesperson said in a statement."I'm shocked. I'm disappointed because my feet are here often. I live within the block. I'm here all the time," said Kristen Everett. That's not good for the neighborhood and I don't know why they would close when Jefferson is opening," said Fred Kogan. "I'm bummed."The shutdown follows the closure of several other high-profile stores in the area, including Wawa. It has some residents concerned about the state of shopping in their neighborhood."It feels like it's kind of been like a state of flux, state of transition. This sort of stuff happens, also feels like there are outside forces not managed as much as they could have been either," said Michael McCool from South Philadelphia. While you may see empty storefronts, statistics from 6abc's data journalism team reveal there are actually more stores opening.Support the showSign Up For Exclusive Episodes At: https://reasonabletv.com/LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for new videos every day. https://www.youtube.com/c/NewsForReasonablePeople
Profe Herrera (aka StinkyLulu) reflects on eight plays in four pairings that together ask what makes a political play, what makes a Pulitzer-worthy play, what makes something performance art and not a play (and vice versa), and what happens when a big new celebrity shows up in your big old play…. Productions discussed in this episode include: the live-streamed Broadway production of Stephen Daly Guirgis' BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY and Atlanta's Alliance Theatre's production of Katori Hall's HOT WING KING; the long-running Broadway revival of Kander & Ebb's CHICAGO, currently starring drag artist Jinkx Monsoon, and BAM's buzzy revisitation of Lorraine Hansberry's THE SIGN IN SIDNEY BRUSTEIN's WINDOW, with Oscar Isaac starring as Sidney; TwoRiver Theatre's production of Mando Alvarado's LIVING AND BREATHING and Princeton Theater Program's staging of student Reed Leventis's immersive and interactive work DISORDER; and Amalia Oliva Rojas's How to Melt ICE or How the Coyote Fell in Love with the Butterfly who Tried to Be a Lizard — as presented by Boundless Theatre Company in partnership with New Perspectives Theatre at the JuliaDeBurgos Cultural Center in East Harlem — and Guillermo Calderón's Kiss by the Wilma Theater in Center City Philadelphia. https://linktr.ee/stinkylulu
Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the third hour by continuing a thread from last hour, rebooting a conversation with Dan, who is heading into Center City Philadelphia to watch the game at a friend's house. Dan explains that he wants to experience the after party as fans take to the streets after a hopeful Philadelphia win, but is nervous riding Philadelphia's public transportation SEPTA to leave the party. Dan asks whether Dom believes the train will be flooded with fans, leading to a safer environment, with Dom and listeners suggesting alternatives for both Dan and others descending upon the City for the big game. Then, Dom welcomes in Tennessee State Representative Joe Towns, who recently proposed in his State Legislature to create an official State holiday the day following the Super Bowl, allowing both children in schools and state workers the opportunity to take off and enjoy the moment. Dom pushes back against the proposition, asking where instead we'd take the day from, with Towns suggesting that we add it to an already established list of holidays, with Dom pressing a particular amendment in the bill that suggests the removal of Christopher Columbus Day. The largest playable musical instrument in the world sits in Center City Philadelphia, and there are several Laurel Hill connections. William B. Irvine left his estate to the University of Pennsylvania but did not know they would use it to build an auditorium named for him, designed by architect Horace Trumbauer. The magazine publisher Cyrus Curtis donated an organ. All three of these men are at Laurel Hill West. For more than 40 years, organist Larry Ferrari kept Philadelphians company on Sunday mornings by playing popular music on his television show. Larry is also at Laurel Hill West. "Pulling Out All the Stops: The Laurel Hill Organ Episode" tells these stories and more on this month's "Biographical Bytes from Bala."
This is a Video and audio Podcast episode. The Video is only available on the Spotify platform or our YouTube channel. The audio is available on all platforms. I met up with a group of young people in Center City Philadelphia, who had set up a prayer station in City Hall, offering prayers, sharing hot chocolate and their faith. In fact, I interviewed two of the young people present, Collin and Mckenna, who spent the time to talk with me about their own transformation experience, sharing their faith from a handbook. Importantly, we were reminded that Orthodox Christians views salvation from a "theology of the already but not yet" - we are saved, we are being saved and we shall be saved, indication the transformational journey of the Christian experience. While speaking with Collin and McKenna, you could hear the other YAM youths announcing, "Hot chocolate, free bibles..." and praying for people who stopped to peruse the tables and to have coffee or grab some free literature. Towards the end, I sing a song that was written and composed by my twin brother, Ricardo McKenzie and yours truly - Renaldo McKenzie - years ago, that we had performed at a "Youth for Christ" Event and won the Caribbean Duet Competiton for. It's entitled: "Why Don't You Call Upon the Divine". The YWAM group wears red and white and will be in Center City for the rest of the week and probably the month from 11:00am - 3:00pm with their Prayer Station, offering prayers and sharing free literature, words of encouragement, prayers and their faith. Who are YWAM: "Youth With A Mission" reaches out in 180+ countries through three main areas — Evangelism, Training and Mercy Ministry. Their ministries cover every sphere of society, including ship-based medical care, performing arts teams, Bible training programs, business coaching, sports ministries, anti-trafficking work, and many more. From a late-night vision of waves of young people reaching every continent, given to a 20-year-old in the Bahamas, to a global ministry with over 20,000 workers, the growth of YWAM is the story of God's inspiration, God's grace for many mistakes, and the creativity of the Holy Spirit's leading. The heart of YWAM–to worship God, to serve God's global purposes, and to champion young people–remains as strong as it was in the beginning. How can coffee change the world? According to Saxby's CEO and Founder, Nick Bayer, it begins with educating young entrepreneurs. This week Laura and Nick discuss how Saxby's is empowering young people to embrace the humanity of the hospitality industry and build a business that creates an impact. Here are a few things you'll learn during this conversation: How Saxby's created an academic experience while building real businesses Why every young entrepreneur needs a course in critical thinking skills for business How to develop your empathy skills Why Saxby's made B Corp status a priority What you can do to hold your team accountable to your mission and values During the 24-Hour Influence Challenge, Nick encourages you to respond to all digital communication within 24 hours and evaluate how it impacts trust and relationship building. Nick Bayer has always been in the business of bringing people together, whether it's as one of Philadelphia Business Journal's "Most Admired CEOs" or as a consummate team captain since Little League. So when he created Saxbys in 2005, Nick never really considered it to be a coffee company — instead, it's a social impact company fueled by amazing food, beverage, and hospitality. Saxbys has since grown from one corner café to a nearly 30-unit, Philadelphia-based business with a singular mission: Make Life Better. For Nick Bayer, “making life better" began by fostering an O.D.D (outgoing, detail-oriented, and disciplined) team, committed to the betterment of the communities it serves and aligned by their shared entrepreneurial spirit and Saxbys' core values. Today, that team spans over 500 members across the Northeast that represent the change-makers of tomorrow. To that point, Bayer introduced Saxbys' pioneering Experiential Learning Program (ELP) in 2015 in partnership with Drexel University — the nation's first entirely student-run cafe where students earn full academic credit and wages through a university cooperative education program. Bayer's vision for the program is to embolden the next generation of entrepreneurs, providing undergrad students with tangible experience as a supplement to traditional classroom learning. In five short years, one ELP cafe has blossomed to a dozen, with five more partnerships opening in the Fall of 2021. Nick is currently the Entrepreneur in Residence at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, an adjunct professor at Drexel University and the Executive in Residence at Temple University's Fox School of Business. He serves on the Board of The Franklin Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region, the Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel University's Close School of Entrepreneurship and Drexel's Steinbright Career Development Center, as well as being a Corporate Council Member for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He has been recognized as the "Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, EY's "Social Entrepreneur of the Year" and among the “100 Most Powerful Business Leaders in Philadelphia” by the Philadelphia Business Journal. The Sixers recently announced plans to build a new arena in Center City. It would be located in the Fashion District and right next to Chinatown. It would be called 76 Place, and it's being targeted for a 2031 opening. It's a long time away and a lot can happen between now and then, but we wanted to ask a few questions anyway. What would it look like? How would it change Center City? How would it impact the neighborhood? We asked all these questions and more to Harris Steinberg, Executive Director of the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation.
