Pee-Wee As Himself is an HBO Max two-part documentary exploring the life and career of Paul Reubens, known for his character Pee-wee Herman. Directed by Matt Wolf, Pee-wee as Himself is constructed around over 40 hours of candid interviews with Reubens, conducted before his passing in 2023. The film delves into his early influences in circus and avant-garde theater, his meteoric rise with Pee-wee's Playhouse and Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and the deliberate separation he maintained between his personal identity and his Pee-wee persona. The documentary also addresses the controversies that impacted Reubens' career, including his 1991 arrest and the 2002 charges related to vintage erotica, which were later dropped. In a poignant final audio message recorded shortly before his death, Reubens reflects on the pain of being misunderstood and emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and non-conformity—a message he consistently aimed to impart to his audience. Joining Kate is two-time Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian Kathy Griffin, one of Paul Reubens good friends. With the deal already under scrutiny from senators, what’s in store for Shari Redstone's Skydance merger? Kim Masters and Matt Belloni dive into this and more major media shake-up stories. Plus, Masters talks to director Matt Wolf about Pee-wee as Himself, which looks beyond the iconic character to the complicated man who created him. The two-part series draws from more than 40 hours of Wolf’s interviews with Paul Reubens, who spent much of his life guarding his privacy. The filmmaker also explains how those conversations revealed Reubens’ inner conflicts and why HBO pushed for more when it came to telling the late actor’s story.

And then turning those works into audiobooks voiced by the funniest people on Earth, including Jon Hamm, Paul Reubens, Amy Sedaris and many more. We're back with a brand new season and we watch "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" directed by Tim Burton and even after all these years we can't contain our joy after viewing this comedy masterpiece. We really lost an icon when Paul Reubens passed so we're celebrating his legacy reviewing Pee-wee on his quest to find his prized bicycle. We take a little trip discussing the origins of the character in the underground L.A. comedy scene of the late 70s, the subversive/punk rock/queer undertones that inform Pee-wee and try and dissect how we can possibly still be laughing at these jokes all these years later. There was something in the sauce on the Warner lot when those crazy kids were making this movie and the world is a tiny bit more fun because of it.  Thanks for listening all season and we'll be back with fresh episodes before you know it! In this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast, we dive into the quirky charm of Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), a film that not only captured the essence of the 1980s but also became a pop culture touchstone. Blending childhood innocence with the decade's irreverent humor, it launched Tim Burton's directorial career and solidified Paul Reubens' Pee-wee Herman as an iconic figure. Join Tim Williams and his guest co-hosts Ben Carpenter & Laramy Wells as they discuss Pee-wee's absurd cross-country quest to recover his stolen bike, exploring its vivid visuals, eccentric characters, and lasting influence on comedy, fashion, and filmmaking. Grab your light grey suit and red bow tie, and tune in for a nostalgic trip back to this offbeat classic! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: The "Mr. T" cereal eaten by Pee-Wee actually existed. It was not something made up for the film. After seeing the finished product, the studio wasn't so sure it wanted to put much more money behind Pee-wee's Big Adventure. Finding it all a bit bizarre, they decided to roll the film out slowly and on a regional basis. Warner cranked up the publicity machine When it proved popular with even a limited audience. By the time all was said and done, Pee-wee had earned nearly $41 million at the box office. Today on Normal World, Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela dive into another round of absurdity. Pee-wee Herman star Paul Reubens was revealed to be gay, but everyone was too busy remembering his other scandals. Meanwhile, Doug Emhoff lands a cushy law firm job, and the guys joke about his work ethic—if it exists. They dive into RFK Jr.'s Senate hearing, where Bernie Sanders fixated on $26 baby onesies while ignoring his own real estate empire. Elizabeth Warren went after RFK Jr. for suing Big Pharma—conveniently forgetting her own corporate cash flow. Then there's the guy who scammed a casino by pretending to be a Native American chief, a scheme that lasted way longer than it should have. The Ozempic conversation gets weird, with Al Roker, Al Sharpton, and Ariana Grande becoming case studies in extreme weight loss gone wrong. The crew wonders why some people lose fat and gain… an oddly long skull. This episode of Normal World includes comedian Matt McClowry. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a favourite with both our families, and given that this is a Tim Burton film we expected that the storytelling would be rock solid. This is a great example of writers using the storytelling tools at their disposal to maximum effect. Ah, but since filmmakers have access to different tools than novelists, when you strip away the "spectacle" of stop-motion and musical numbers, how strong is the story itself? We dug into Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring Perry alongside Kristy Swanson and Donald Sutherland. We particularly loved the comedic swings of supporting cast members Paul Reubens and David Arquette.
