Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"I've never been to Mexico City or Zócalo de Puebla, but I do know the feeling of sitting in a small city park, in a city full of parks—a brief moment of pause in the midst of a hectic megacity. I think about my day, the week gone by, the month, the year. A rare moment of stillness. "As I listened to the recording, I wondered how the soundscape of Zócalo de Puebla has changed over the years, just as Delhi's has. The sparrows from my childhood are long gone, but I still hear peacocks in the distance, their calls drowned out by the sound of grinding stone and the constant hum of construction. Even in the parks, there is little respite. But I am hopeful. Soon I'll be sitting in Puebla, listening to the birds go about their business and children calling out to their friends, as if nothing has changed. "To create the piece, I ran the field recording through multiple iterations of envelope followers, processing each layer differently. Some layers were then played through a Buchla Music Easel, creating an organic synergy between the birds of Zócalo and my synthesizer here in Delhi. I wanted to link the two cities through memory and sound." Historic Centre of Puebla reimagined by Songs for a Tired City. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. Episode 42 of The Ambient Vault podcast features special guest Samuel Edmund.  Samuel Edmund is the moniker of Jae Ryan when he makes broken, worn and nostalgic ambient music.Jae has been generous to share tracks from his debut album “Due To”. “Due To” was released on Folded Note Records a few months ago and the tapes sold out within 24 hours!“Due To” is an album full of live improvisations where Jae used a Minimoog, Buchla Music Easel, Digital Mellotron & Ciat-Lonbarde instruments.  “Due To” was Jae's attempt to capture the strange emptiness brought on by lockdowns and COVID while still trying to provide plenty of hopefulness for the future.  A second edition cassette of “Due To” is available now. Link to the album and all things Jae are listed below. Thanks as always for listening!  Jae also hosts a Podcast called “The Deerhorn” which focuses on Ciat-Lonbarde instruments. Each episode is a conversation with various members of the Ciat-Lonbarde community and focuses on the artists new releases, recording process, personal history & their love for various gear.  The Deerhorn often features the artists of Seil records & Folded Note Records.  Recently, Jae was also a guest on the wonderful Podular Modcast as well. The 4 tracks on this EP were made shortly after Jae moved from Edmonton to Vancouver.  He fell head over heels for the new city and each track on this is a love letter to his favourite places to skateboard in Vancouver.  When he's not head first into a modular filled studio, Jae can usually be found skateboarding, hiking, cycling and taking pictures.Due To:https://foldednote.bandcamp.com/album/due-toJae's personal Bandcamp:https://samueledmund.bandcamp.comJae's YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdBo6YNb4ExdxftqAJ_djqQJae's Podcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-deerhorn/id1535334953Jae on PodMod:https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/episode-165-jae-ryan-host-of-the-deer-horn-podcast/id1363821591?i=1000531569908If you enjoy the podcast, you can help support future episodes by subscribing to the podcast and leaving a review, following Brian on Instagram @heldbymachines, and subscribing to his YouTube channel.  You can also check out the Instagram page Brian curates for his late grandfather, gospel pianist James Miller.  https://www.instagram.com/jamesmillergospelpianist/?hl=en  Thanks!Email: brianeverettmiller@yahoo.com.  Brian on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/heldbymachines/Brian on Youtube:https://youtube.com/channel/UCSAWKkRtE8tVTvD1r202tRw

The Galaxy Electric are Augustus and Jacqueline - a husband/wife duo based in the US - who are obsessed with early electronic music that utilized magnetic tape to create new sounds no one had ever heard before! Together, they blend influences from 60s Psych pop and Retro Sci-Fi to make "Cosmic Tape Music.” Using Buchla style synthesizers, Reel to Reel and Cassette tape machines, a Mellotron, a Korg Delta and various effects devices sprinkled with ethereal vocals they take their listeners on a cosmic journey. When their debut album, "Everything is Light and Sound" was released on vinyl, they were hailed as "one of the most original and intriguing bands to emerge in the music scene within the last year." They spent a lot of time on the road opening for bands like Lake Ruth and Welsh artist Gwenno. And now have returned to the studio for their second full length album, “Tomorrow Was Better Yesterday.” “Tomorrow Was Better Yesterday” is the first album we have ever recorded that was fully and completely improvised. We recorded to 1/4" Analog Tape without any digital recording magic (overdubs, edits, tuning etc). We spent a year practicing this new improvisational style before we turned on the tape machine. But once we did, we recorded every day for a month. And when we listened back - we realized we had created a space age fantasy album - with an incredible story; a soundtrack to a time traveling space voyage. In order to honor the recording process of this album - we knew we had to find a way to release it on Reel to Reel tape with the most amazing artwork and packaging - to create a unique Collector's Item worthy of the voyage. With the help of Dead Media Tapes, we will be able to do just that!”Pre-Order “Tomorrow Was Better Yesterday”https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1511715045/the-galaxy-electric-is-releasing-new-music-on-reel-to-reel?fbclid=IwAR1fOryUb5reu4pkW47M7mqQBoVMehsuvp94jPIqd16XYqXQSVqvIDBWKXI  Our website:www.thegalaxyelectric.comSocial Links: https://www.facebook.com/thegalaxyelectrichttps://www.instagram.com/thegalaxyelectric/https://twitter.com/galaxyelctrchttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6DhuaWCSugIiyHlxE7vsBA Playlist and description:“Tomorrow Was Better Yesterday” Album Trailer Premiere: this is a collage of the tracks from our forthcoming full length album release. We are hosting a kickstarter for the project to fund releasing the album on cassette and REEL to REEL!Tomorrow Was Better Yesterday Single: One of our favorite songs off of the new album. This song was completely improvised straight to 1/4” tape and features heavy use of the Buchla Music Easel among other synths and effects. Buchla Coconut: A song off of our debut album Everything is Light and Sound. This song was performed exclusively on the Buchla Music Easel along with some found sounds. Calm Down: A song off of our debut album Everything is Light and Sound. This song was our first instance of using the Buchla Music Easel in a track. Relaxation Tapes: The first song off of our debut album Everything is Light and Sound. It’s a collage piece that sets the stage nicely for the Buchla Cosmic Drone track to follow. Buchla Cosmic Drone 5-24-20: This is the 20th long form improvised meditative drone we performed on May 24, 2020. It features a small Buchla system featuring clones of the 257, 259, 266, 280, and 292 as well as 1979’s Digital Resonator. It also features Jacqueline’s voice run through 2 Boss RE-20 space echo pedals.

Tyresta is the experimental music project of social worker and musician Nick Turner.  Nick is based in Chicago, Illinois and makes music utilizing various instruments including Buchla Music Easel, eurorack modular, mellotron, and guitar.  He also helps behind the scenes with the ambient, drone, and experimental music labels Past Inside the Present and sub-label Fallen Moon Recordings.    You can find his music on Bandcamp or through your streaming service of choice.   Piece description:  I wrote and recorded "Facing Ourselves" during the Coronavirus shelter-in-place order in April 2020.  Outside of my life in music, I am a mental health therapist so I have directly witnessed what happens when people (myself included) are forced to give up certain routines and distractions and face themselves.  The four parts of "Facing Ourselves" sort of represent the various emotional states that both I and the people I work with have gone through since the Coronavirus outbreak.  Though at times uneasy and tense, there have been moments of deep love and connection, which has been interesting to witness and experience.   Like many people, when working with the Easel, I can get lost in shaping sounds for hours on end.  With each of these pieces, I was working with both the Easel and various effects  (Strymon Timeline, Strymon BigSky, and Valhalla reverb) in order to land on sounds that adequately represented the emotions/feelings I wanted to evoke in the listener.  Effects, both in and outside of the box, help inform my approach to sound design and also assist in determining the direction I go in with certain patches on the Easel (timbres, waveshapes, tempo, envelope shapes, etc.).   Mastered by Nathan Moody at Obsidian Sound.

Fabienne Erato - aka the danish sound designer and composer Anne Gry Kristensen - creates a meditative, profound and evocative kind of music that seem to come from a deep abyss, where a not-yet-known conscience started navigating her own existence. Far away from the surface and its laws, her music recreates time and its rules. It slows down seconds, until it forges a calm disoriented feeling, where you both get lost and find yourself again. Her debut album, that has been composed on a Buchla Music Easel and captured on a portable tape recorder, will be out on wonderful Pomperipossa Records on May 24th. On this mixtape, Erato created a pleasant soundscape putting her own music together with all the best you can think of. Tracks: 1) Halim El-Dabh - Michael and the Dragon 2) Popol Vuh - In den Gärten Pharaos * 3) Anna Von Hausswolff - Källan (prototype), live in Lincoln Cathedral * 4) Tape-recording of the thunders of Armilla Jungle. 5) Alejandro Jodorowsky - Rainbow Room, Holy Mountain 6) Heresy of the Free Spirit feat. In this episode Todd Barton takes us on a musical and literary journey back to 1985 when he worked with Ursula K. Le Guin, famous for the EarthSea novels. Todd Barton created the musical score for Ursula’s fascinating novel, Always Coming Home, which focuses on a people that might have lived a long time ago in Northern California, and the book came with a cassette tape of music, songs and poems for The Kesh co-created by Ursula and Todd. The music for Always Coming was originally created using authentic acoustic instruments and Todd’s Roland Jupiter 8. Unfortunately he sold the Jupiter 8 many years ago, so has re-created the sounds from the track Music of the 8th House using the Buchla Music Easel.
