We're taking it back to the 2025 Portland Book Festival this weekend, with poets m. mick powell and Taylor Byas, and moderater Jae Nichelle. Taylor Byas's second collection, Resting Bitch Face, uses watching and surveillance to explore Black female subjectivity. Byas engages with multiple art forms — painting, film, sculpture, and photographs – to explore the perspectives of artist and muse, of watcher and watched. Taylor is in conversation with m. mick powell, whose debut poetry collection Dead Girl Cameo: A Love Stroy in Poems features of chorus of pop stars – Aaliyah, Whitney Houston, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and more – in an exploration of grief, sexuality, and celebrity. Powell refers to the collection as a documentary, and it includes imagery, speculative verse, and more. Poet Jae Nichelle leads a conversation that starts from the prompt “pop culture poetry.” Engaging with pop culture, as these collections do, is an act of engaging with the cultural moment. Done well, it doesn't “date” the work, but creates a time capsule – a documentary. Both collections are deeply researched, and Taylor and mick discuss their relationships to art, scholarship, and commerce, and the interplay between those different aspects of publishing this particular collections. In the conversation, first we'll hear m. mick powell read the title poem of their debut collection, Dead Girl Cameo, followed by a reading by Taylor Byas of the title poem of Resting Bitch Face and then a conversation between mick, Taylor, and the moderator, Jae. A heads up – there's some mature language that may not be appropriate for all listeners, and you'll hear some bleeps in the opening poem. Taylor Byas is an award-winning poet and a Black Chicago native currently living in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her poetry collection I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times won the Maya Angelou Book Award, the Ohioana Book Award, the CHIRBy Award, and the BCALA Best Poetry Honor. m mick powell is a queer Black Cabo Verdean femme, poet, artist, Aries, and the author of DEAD GIRL CAMEO (One World Books, 2025) and threesome in the last Toyota Celica & other circus tricks, winner of the 2023 Host Publications Chapbook Prize. An assistant professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Connecticut, mick enjoys chasing waterfalls and being in love. Louisiana-born Jae Nichelle (she/her) is the author of God Themselves (Andrews McMeel, 2023) and the chapbook The Porch (As Sanctuary) (YesYes Books, 2019). She was a finalist for a 2023 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship and won the inaugural John Lewis Writing Award in poetry from the Georgia Writers Association. Her poetry has appeared in Best New Poets 2020 (University of Virginia Press, 2020), the Washington Square Review, The Offing, Muzzle Magazine, and elsewhere. She believes in all of our collective ability to contribute to radical change.

Ashaña expands on her tale while Rou and Trix begin to question Umé's intentions. Ashaña is adamant that Umé wants what is best, insisting that it was their misunderstanding of Umé's warning that caused the destruction of the people of Nadros. Rou and Trix are forced to reconcile their interpretation of the events with Umé and Talbain against Ashaña's story. The more the party prods at the details and counters with new information about the deity, the more Ashaña seems distressed. In turn, the group updates Ashaña on who the Emperor is and why Umé might be interested in destroying him. In doing so, they provide Ashaña with some insight into why Umé has gone silent. However, the news seems to bring no comfort. Ze goes on to share that not all were destroyed, as the Princess and their shared lover left with some survivors to start anew. Ashaña stayed behind to watch over the island and the weapon that dwells there. When Rou asks if it's possible that the survivors brought knowledge beyond Nadros, they insist it's not possible and escorts the party to his home. Upon arriving, they find a mysterious figure perusing Ashaña's gardens. Follow Dax @gmdax, Kappa @TheKappaChris, Sebastian @sebastianyue, Wren @ThornyDryad and Nala J. Trix rushes to aid Elaith, who has been suddenly pulled up toward the canopy and an awaiting man-eating plant. As they make quick work of the predator, Rou maneuvers to catch his new friend when they fall. Unknown to the party, an unseen figure watches the scene from the shadows. As the smoke clears from Trix's arrow and Elaith lands safely, the figure reveals themself. Standing over 8 feet tall, the figure demands they return to where they came from and insists the island has nothing for them. When Elaith pushes back, and even goes so far as to give a thorough description of the plant they need, the figure seems to relax a bit. Rou and Trix chime in, helping to convince the figure to at least talk with them - preferably in a safer place. The figure, who shares she's named Ashaña, leads them deeper into the jungle. What strikes the party is that the plants seem to react to his very presence as ze walks through the foliage. This week on Sheena Interrupted, it's just TRID and Jae… and one very honest conversation about Snapchat. After a month of using the app, we sat down to break down what's actually happening behind the screen: how much time is being spent, what real communication looks like vs. just “streaks,” and why it's harder to put the phone down than anyone wants to admit. This isn't a lecture, it's a real back-and-forth between a parent trying to understand and a teenager living it in real time.We talked: What kids are actually doing on Snapchat How “streaks” keep you coming back Why screen time adds up fast The balance between independence and boundaries What's helpful vs. a complete waste of time How to be aware (without being addicted) If you're a parent, this will make you think. If you're a kid, you'll probably feel seen.Equal parts honest, funny, and a little uncomfortable…in the best way. Thanks to this week's sponsorStoryworth.com/Sheena

Have you ever wondered why changing shoes helps for a while, only for the same pain to come back? This conversation will change how you think about feet, form, and "support." In this episode of The MOVEMENT Movement, Steven Sashen speaks with Jae Gruenke, Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and founder of The Balanced Runner™, who explains why many runners stay stuck in pain even after new shoes, inserts, or medical treatment. Often called the "wise woman of running," she's helped runners and triathletes, from beginners to Olympians, improve performance and resolve chronic issues through neuromuscular reeducation and movement learning. Together, she and Steven Sashen unpack the cushioning vs minimalist debate and reveal the overlooked forces and compensation patterns that determine whether your stride feels easy or keeps fighting you. Key Takeaways:→ Your nervous system governs movement choices, often limiting range and load as a protective strategy. → Improved coordination reduces effort and unlocks "already-there" strength.→ Foot soreness on pavement isn't automatic. Pain can signal excess horizontal force, not the hard ground. → Chronic pain often creates compensation loops, making people double down on the pattern that caused the problem because it feels safest.→ Movement reeducation can reveal the true driver of your chronic pain. Jae Gruenke is a Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner, running technique expert, and founder of The Balanced Runner™. Often called the "wise woman of running," she helps runners and triathletes—from beginners to Olympians—relieve pain, move more efficiently, and improve performance, especially when issues persist despite medical treatment. A former professional dancer, Jae studied modern dance at Bennington College and Williams College and performed with New York City-based companies for more than a decade. Her work with choreography that required sustained outdoor running sparked a deep study of running mechanics, using her Feldenkrais training to make running feel easier and more enjoyable—then teaching those principles to others. Her work has been featured in outlets including Runner's World UK and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, and she contributed to Dr. Mark Cucuzzella's 1-2-3 Run program for the US Air Force. This week on Sheena Interrupted… Sheena is interrupted (aka out of town), so TRID is joined by Jae for a surprisingly real conversation about teens, social media, and the one app every kid just wants for group chats: Snapchat. We get into: Snapchat rules & screen time limits, privacy vs safety, what parents should (and shouldn't) monitor, how social media impacts teen confidence + mental health, and why “everything disappears” is exactly the problem. Also: hockey schedules, parenting worry spirals, and an extremely unnecessary debate about jumping over cars in an alley (do not try this at home, or anywhere). Thanks to this week's sponsors:Quince.com/Sheena for free shippingBarefaced.com/Sheena for 15% off plus free shipping#parenting #snapchat #teenlife #socialmedia #familypodcast #comedypodcast #sheenainterrupted
