Someone said that there are only four types of stories: the doomed city under attack, the traveling of the lost soul, the big adventure searching for a treasure, and the sacrifice of a god-like creature. Therefore, every story ever told is a different version of one of the mentioned above. If we accept this as a truth, what makes a story great is not the characters' adventures but the way they're narrated. That means even one of the most known stories in the modern world can captivate and steal the reader's attention.Today, I chat with David Meerman Scott, marketing strategist, entrepreneur, investor, marketing and growth speaker, bestselling author of 12 books, including "Fanocracy," "The New Rules of Marketing & PR," and "Marketing the Moon." We had a fantastic conversation about the incredible work Public Affairs did marketing the several space programs that led American astronauts to the moon. In this episode, we talked about David's book Marketing the Moon. He kindly explained the central role NASA's Public Affairs office played in convincing the American people to finance the space projects. David also mentioned his experience meeting the astronauts that walked the moon surface, how he felt meeting his childhood heroes, and why they happily agreed on being interviewed by him for this book. He described the tactic used by the Public Affairs office to market the space programs, why they were so successful, and the differences between the American and Russian openness to information access. Tune in and listen to Episode 35 of Moving Beyond Your Tribe and learn about the fascinating story behind the Apollo program. Some Questions I Ask:How was it to meet the astronauts? Did it fulfill your childhood dream of seeing them and getting their insights? (3:31)Could you tell us a little bit about the people who were setting up the moon's branding and kind of setting the stage for it? (8:48)What do you think about Disney and all the other components that made the space program interesting before the first launch? (12:32)What do you think about the storytelling around the branding? What were some of the things that you really thought they did effectively? (14:30)What aspect of the marketing was most effective? (25:44)From your perspective, what do you think we could draw from Marketing The Moon that we could take with us today? Ensuing tales of darkness and light allow a deeper exploration of the human condition, psyche, collective fears and torments. Nessi and her producer Duncan Bridgeman ('1 Giant Leap’) together dug an uncharted tunnel into the artist's turbulent heart and soul. The album was recorded following a successful fundraising campaign in April 2015 during which more than $50,000 was raised. Nessi toured in the wake of the campaign, playing in 25 European countries in the last 2 years includes major festivals in Europe. And now she has the perfect “thank you” to those who have supported her on her journey: an album revealing an authentic and heartfelt search for light, depth, hope and truth; an artistic quest for love and trust. A series of intricately detailed, hauntingly atmospheric and lushly textured avant-ballads. Here is a musician whose work obliquely references her travails and nods to Björk and Kate Bush but is uniquely her own, with Portuguese inflections and intimations of hope and dread.

The 1940-41 era was a bleak time in American history. The country was still in the midst of a recession within the Great Depression. Resources were limited. The German Army rolled out its powerful Blitzkrieg quick-strike capability and had begun to take over Europe. The American military knew war was coming, millions of lives would be at stake, and the future of democracy was hanging in the balance. In order to fight on equal ground, the Army realized they had to develop a vehicle for mobile warfare.”They needed to replace the mule as a key transport for troops and weaponry across rough terrain, In 1940, three companies competed to develop America’s first all-terrain, ¼-ton 4x4 vehicle, the Jeep, helping the allies emerge victorious in World War II. Paul R. Bruno, the author of The Original Jeeps, is the guest today. He discusses the true story of the challenges, emotions, strategy, and competition to design it, building a prototype in about 2 months. There were three competing companies, American Bantam Car Company, Willys-Overland Motors, and Ford Motor Company, all in pursuit of the sole-source government contract to build the Jeep.Bruno adds, “What is truly amazing is that three firms produced prototype models, each overcoming unique challenges and circumstances to do so. Anyone who knows anything about manufacturing realizes it took a real production miracle to get that done on very short notice.”“General George C. Marshall called the Jeep ‘America’s greatest contribution to modern warfare.’ President and General Dwight Eisenhower said the Jeep was a key tool that helped win the war.

People have always longed for fame, the mass approval of others. If only people would love and admire us, we reason, then maybe we would really matter. If you think people were addicted to fame in the 1980's, the last 4 years would have said, “you ain't seen nothing yet.”The next decades would bring us reality shows, people who were famous for being famous, the Kardashians, and social media. Today more people seem more addicted to finding their approval from others than ever before. Fame is about social validation like a performer's hunger for applause. In our culture, there's nothing worse than being obscure and nothing better than being famous.According to author Gregory Jantz, people are addicted to social media because we are addicted to approval.  Our sense of self-esteem is dependent upon whether or not someone likes them, so in order to feel OK about themselves, they need to know whether they are liked or not. According to one study 48% of the highest users of Facebook will go on Facebook first thing in the morning, even before they go to the bathroom. They need to see who liked their posts. So hungry are we for affirmation and approval it becomes literally the first thing we crave every day. Which begs the question, “Whose approval do you really need?” That's a critical question if you want to live a Life on Purpose. Support the show (https://calvary.us/give/)

In this episode, we discuss the missions-oriented approach for innovation and governance, and provide highlights from the City Futures Summit on the same topic, hosted in October 2020 by the IIIEE. A little too spooky, considering this is based on a true story. True crime time! This was another tough one to watch without AD (audio description) but was offered on Amazon Prime through subscription. This episode features our first trigger/content warning as the film does include instances of sexual assault.
