"I was inspired by the beauty in the percussive sound of the bamboo, and how it contrasts with harsher rustling of the wind and rain. I decided to use the recording as the only sound source: everything you hear in the piece is the original recording, manipulated. "Most of the piece was improvised by running and looping the 5 minute recording of the bamboo forest through my Eurorack modular synthesizer. I tried to focus on making my own storm around the knocks of the bamboo. The other elements in the piece come from running the sample through the filterbanks, granular algorithms, and distortions in Composer's Desktop Project. "I recorded and mixed the piece on a Tascam Model 12, and then mastered with a (sort of crappy) Behringer Tube Composer, a homemade plate reverb, and a Teac 1/4" tape machine." "I was struck by the many underlying tensions of this recording. The racialized profiling described by Masha Hassan—the dual nature of observation, the police surveillance of bodies and Masha's surveillance of them juxtaposed against the vibrancy and music of the open marketplace. "I wished to highlight those elements through a chopped and edited approach, a kind of digital tape manipulation, first through Eurorack synthesizer, and then further in DAW based editing; looping, sampling, resampling, stretching, and compressing audio. "While the moments of tension that are so compelling to me in Masha's original recording may or may not be present in this reimagined piece, I aim to achieve that anxiety on a poetic level in my composition — exactimo." Episode 179 Chapter 38, Eurorack. Works Recommended from my book, Electronic and Experimental Music Welcome to the Archive of Electronic Music. This is Thom Holmes. This podcast is produced as a companion to my book, Electronic and Experimental Music, published by Routledge. Each of these episodes corresponds to a chapter in the text and an associated list of recommended works, also called Listen in the text. They provide listening examples of vintage electronic works featured in the text. The works themselves can be enjoyed without the book and I hope that they stand as a chronological survey of important works in the history of electronic music. Be sure to tune-in to other episodes of the podcast where we explore a wide range of electronic music in many styles and genres, all drawn from my archive of vintage recordings. There is a complete playlist for this episode on the website for the podcast. Let's get started with the listening guide to Chapter 38, Eurorack from my book Electronic and Experimental music. "Composed over several weeks using the entire recording used in sections takes the lively street and voices as introduction numerous sounds sampled and were sculptured using audio software and Eurorack hardware itself becomes a rhapsody dedicated to sound recordists and artists everywhere. "This beautiful momentary field recording of Valldemossa, Mallorca Spain inspired our composition and encourages us to close eyes and to appreciate the full and acoustic atmosphere of sounds natural, social and cultural - what a brilliant idea this Sonic Heritage project is." "I found the overall feel of the recording, especially the regular chirping of the crickets, to be very relaxing, and this led me into thinking that I needed to produce something calming and meditative. "I wanted to keep the field recording running throughout, but after a few trial runs I felt that I needed more room to play with, so extended the recording by replicating a section from the middle and seamlessly blending the joins. "The synth of choice for this was the Audrey 2; it uses feedback synthesis to produce wailing screeches reminiscent of howling guitars, but which with practice can also be nurtured into organic drones that can take on the form of low level choral chanting. I ran the primary stereo output of the Audrey back into an additional audio track, but pitch-shifted down 2 octaves in order to provide a low-level bass track and thus adding some warmth to the overall texture. "The final flourish was to add in some intermittent ‘twinkling' using a midi keyboard into some Eurorack modules." "I want to dedicate this composition to my grandfather - Anatoliy Mytianskyi. He was a passionate tourist and loved Berlin school of electronic music very much. He actually was at Svaneti in the 1970s and made some beautiful photos of this place. As a kid I remember looking at this old photos, admiring the towers of Svaneti and mountains around them while my grandfather was listening to some epic instrumental pieces by Klaus Schulze. "So when I saw this sound in the database and heard it - it was a miraculous little moment of recognition and delight, as I felt like I've already been there. And I really love bell sounds! "Happy accidents continued, as at this time I had a rather unique modular system in my hands. It's called UkrRack and made entirely of Eurorack modules made in Ukraine. So I've created a patch and walked to the rhythm of sequencer until it felt right. Then recorded an improvisation with it and it determined the structure, harmonic movements and hence the mood of this composition. "Original recording is everywhere here - in the sequence itself (captured and repitched), as ambient bed, as percussion elements. Sometimes blurred, sometimes immediately recognisable, phasing in and out like a distant but potent memory. And the name of the track is an hommage to Ash Ra Tempel - krautrock band originally created by Manuel Göttsching, Hartmut Enke and Klaus Schulze. "My grandfather never understood the technical side of my sonic endeavours but always loved how it sounded. And he would've liked this one in particular. But unfortunately he passed away almost a year ago. "I don't believe in afterlife of any kind. But I believe that our loved ones, places we've been and all of the impressions of them will continue to live as memories and could always be passed to future generations. "Especially as sound and music." Upper Svaneti bells reimagined by Vlad Suppish. ——————— This sound is part of the Sonic Heritage project, exploring the sounds of the world's most famous sights. "Music is always visual for me, so tried to make it so, figuratively and literally. The bells from Hyde park caught my attention first, so I've developed bell-like sounds through the composition using Yamaha FS1R synth and my Eurorack modular system. "Also it's impossible to ignore the band playing at the beginning of the recording, so I've found the perfect loop and created the rhythmic backbone for the center of a composition. Repetitive, kraut-like and slightly bluesy. And I've done something which had never done before for Cities and Memory projects - recorded my own voice, put it through convolution reverb (using bell sounds from original recording as impulse response source for reverb). Hence my voice here works as ambient bed for more somber parts and like a dialog (jam) with the band when they start to play. "Also I'm quite pleased how it slightly reminds the first piece I've submitted to Cities and Memory (Perforator Pop). And yet it's different of course, like me and the times have changed." Hyde Park, Sydney, reimagined by Vlad Suppish.

Kris Kaiser and Stephen McCaul met at a pub in Santa Monica, California, and hit it off immediately. A shared interest in sound brought them together. Kris and Stephen's professional paths were quite different, but audio was a common thread throughout their lives. Kris's PhD dissertation studied the effects of urban noise on the breeding behaviors of frogs. Stephen developed audio software for video games. Both shared a love for spreadsheets, food, and the glorious sound and invitingly impenetrable interface of the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. A few years later, Kris was a professor and Stephen worked on increasingly complex audio problems in his day job. As an escape, they began experimenting with home-built synthesizers and wild DIY noisemakers. Stephen developed a Eurorack module over a weekend after a dare from a friend, and the synth community took notice. That was the beginning, and in 2016 they quit their jobs and took Noise Engineering full time. Now a staple boutique developer, their hardware and software products are used and adored by hobbyists, composers, artists, and producers around the world. Bio: For those who love to experience music, look no further than Supertask. With deep roots in hip-hop and a focus towards immersion, Supertask creates sonic landscapes that dance between the intensity and stillness of the human consciousness. With a background in IT, Supertask frequently uses code and programming in his artistic vision, and the idea of infinity consumes his musical escapism offerings. A vision that his loyal community, the Dev Team, are directly involved in. Blending both analog and digital sound design, his unique approach has proven to be a driving force in the forward progression of electronic music. Through soundscapes that feel sentient, interactive live streams, and mind-bending visuals, Supertask is changing the way that we consume art. Supertask Links News: Single Release: 4/21 Collaboration EP With "Seeded Vision" comes out this summer. Show Takeaways: Brain-computer interfaces have the potential to revolutionize music creation, but there are challenges to overcome, such as data transfer and the role of musical knowledge. AI can be a useful tool in music production, from generating lyrics to providing information about plugins and audio files. Creativity is subjective, and the definition of creativity can vary from person to person. AI can be creative in its ability to generate music, but a sense of ownership and sentimental value may be lacking. Imperfections and randomness can add depth and authenticity to music production, and tools like Eurorack can provide unique sounds and experiences. Language has limitations in expressing emotions in music, and the complexity of defining concepts like holes and chairs highlights the challenges of categorization.
