American Potential
One Small Step: How Everyday Americans Are Writing the Next Chapter of Freedom

American Potential

Play Episode Listen Later May 21, 2025 27:33

In this inspiring episode of American Potential, host David From is joined by Daniel Bassali, Vice President of Public Affairs for Americans for Prosperity, to discuss the launch of the One Small Step campaign—AFP's bold, nationwide effort to celebrate America's 250th anniversary by spotlighting the everyday citizens who are shaping the future of freedom. Bassali explains how One Small Step draws inspiration from iconic figures like Harriet Tubman, Betsy Ross, and Neil Armstrong—people who took action not for fame, but because it mattered. These American pioneers prove that profound change starts with a single courageous act. And today, that legacy lives on in community members testifying at city council meetings, homeschooling moms fighting for education freedom, and students like Caleb Williams who've become powerful policy advocates before the age of 21. Bassali and From explore how AFP serves as a platform to amplify these local voices, empower bottom-up solutions, and fuel a new generation of civic leadership. Whether it's helping someone write a letter to the editor or organizing grassroots momentum around school choice, every small step adds up to something greater. This episode is a rallying cry: You don't need a title or a microphone to make a difference. You just need to take the first step.

This week on Overdrive Radio we track back to the Mid-America Trucking Show and the big news for the trucking community from podcast sponsor Howes. The Howes Hall of Fame added its 12th member when it honored Mother Trucker Yoga proprietor and fitness and wellness coach Hope Zvara at the show. You heard part of Zvara's story when she was featured here on Overdrive Radio in conversation with Long Haul Paul Marhoefer a couple years back: https://www.overdriveonline.com/overdrive-radio/podcast/15448049/the-qualityoflife-benefits-of-movement-introducing-hope-zvara There, queried about the scourge of anxiety, depression and other mental health ailments throughout America, she asked a simple question -- "What's if it's not a mental health crisis? What if it's a movement crisis?" In that podcast, and here, she detailed her step-by-step program for fitness through basic yoga techniques drivers can do in-cab, around the truck, at points throughout a day for an approachable journey toward better physical health. Mental health, too. Zvara well knows the connections between the two and isn't shy of stressing them routinely with those she works with. She's combated mental stressors of various natures in her own life, using yoga practice toward that end. And she's now worked with an untold number of individual truck drivers to help them achieve their own goals. We got a little tutorial in her brand of “no mat necessary" yoga at the start of the Trucking Solutions Group's talk in the East Hall out at MATS on the final day. She led attendees through a series of stretches aimed simply at relieving the neck and upper-body tension so many of us face after a long day at the wheel or, in my case, typing away at the desk. Today on the podcast, hear the audio of Zvara's instruction on that mini-routine at the tail end, and otherwise buckle up for her story of helping truckers help themselves in health and wellness. And though Zvara's program is designed for simplicity, she's also well aware it's not exactly a simple matter for any of us. Hear how yoga and general phyiscal well-being got her through her own crisis, and into the work for which she's now honored as the latest member the Howes Hall of Fame. Nominate a deserving trucking industry participant for the Hall yourself, and browse all so honored todate, via https://howesproducts.com/hof Find Hope Zvara's Mother Trucker Yoga effort at this link, where today you can download a free guide to 11 helpful stretches: https://mothertruckeryoga.com

A recent headline read: “A Planetary Alignment Is Here. This astronomical event could be a prophetic signal as we have been told to gaze into the heavens for signs and wonders. In the Bible, this is a prelude to the arrival of the Messiah while the struggle between good and evil will get a little more on the hotter side. We are told that in the end days, the sun will be as dark as sackcloth and the moon shall turn to blood – stars will appear to be falling from heaven and planet alignments are yet another indication of a structured and predicted apocalypse. At the beginning of the year, we have all that enthusiasm and most of us are filled with hope, promise and a lot of excitement for the coming year. When players set resolutions or goals for the year, it's very easy to fall into the trap of trying to tackle too many things at once. In this episode we're going to talk about how to actually achieve your goals, take those New Year's resolutions that may be rambling around in your brain, and to actually achieve some(if not all) of them when it comes to your pickleball game. This will prevent a situation where we either don't take any action or we take very inconsistent action and by the end of January or perhaps by the end of February, most of the resolutions are by the wayside. Start with small, consistent actions. Here's a way for you to do that;i) Begin by taking a look at your pickleball game right now. - Pull out a piece of paper and just draw a line down the middle. On the left side of the paper, try and do an honest assessment of where you are right now as a pickleball player. This should feature the different parts of your game. - Do a little visioning and think of who you would like to be as a pickleball player at the end of 2025. Write that all down as well. What would you like to have? - Then, pick out one thing on the list, that one most important thing that you're going to start closing the gap on. Check out Better Pickleball Camps; https://betterpickleball.com/pickleball-camps/Eight-week fitness challenge; https://betterpickleball.com/pickleball-fitness-challenge

As you're recovering from indulging in stuffing and pecan pie, we wanted to bring you a special bonus episode we put together in collaboration with our friends at StoryCorps. If you haven't heard of StoryCorps, it's an organization that has been gathering individual stories from across the country for over 20 years and collects them in the U.S. Library of Congress. StoryCorps's online archive now has the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered. Today, we wanted to play seven stories about gratitude. There's one about a man's deeply held appreciation for his father, a story about a mother who forgave the man who killed her son, and one about a busboy who prayed over Robert Kennedy right after he was shot in 1968. There's a story about a first love, an unexpected friendship, and being yourself. We know it sounds cheesy, but these stories made us laugh and cry, and we think you'll love them, too. And as StoryCorps's founder Dave Isay tells us, “Don't forget about the beauty in poetry, and the grace in the stories of our loved ones and neighbors hiding in plain sight all around us.”  Thank you so much to Dave and StoryCorps for partnering with us for this episode. If you want to have a conversation with a stranger across the political divide, sign up at One Small Step. If you want to honor a loved one over the holidays with a StoryCorps interview that goes straight from your phone into the Library of Congress with one tap, participate in their Great Thanksgiving Listen. When you sit down to Thanksgiving dinner, are you going to be at a table with anyone with really different political views? Instead of fighting or remaining distant, could this be the year to try and find some common ground? Today, we share a recording of a recent live event at Vermont Public's studios in conjunction with StoryCorp. It's with Vermonters who participated in our One Small Step program. Each person was matched with a stranger with different views and life experiences. They have a facilitated conversation, and learn how to bridge their divides. They are Chris Sims of Jericho, Judy Scott of St. George, Ramona Akpo-Sani of Orwell, and Beth Howard of Williston. And from Braver Angels, we have Lincoln Earle-Centers of Montpelier and Katherine Cadwell of Fayston. We were also joined by two folks from Braver Angels, an organization with a similar mission of connecting people across political divides, Lincoln Earle-Centers of Montpelier and Katherine Cadwell of Fayston. If you are a part of an organization who would like to take part in One Small Step training, visit https://www.vermontpublic.org/2024-11-26/request-a-training-session-one-small-step-on-the-roadThis event was taped on November 17th

On this week's episode: Grizzly 399's death has made national headlines and triggered memorials and gatherings from the Snake River Canyon to Grand Teton National Park. KHOL's Dante Filpula Ankney reports both wildlife advocates like Kristin Combs and wildlife managers like Chris Servheen and Dan Thompson say the bear had a positive impact throughout it's life but posed some unique management challenges.   Former Jackson Hole Fire Chief Stephen Jellie resigned under much scrutiny last year with a substantial severance. KHOL's Sophia Boyd-Fliegel talks with Mat-Su Sentinel reporter Amy Bushatz about a similar situation, this time in Palmer, Alaska.   Many who can't vote in Tuesday's election are still anxious about the results. A group of Jacksonites and immigrant service providers met last month in the Teton County Library to recap recent immigration policy changes and outline potentials for under a Trump OR Harris administration. KHOL's Rachel Stevens attended and talked Alin Yukiro Badillo Carillo — the leader of an immigration group in town who fears her complicated legal status could change.    Over the past few months KHOL and StoryCorps have connected Teton County residents with candidates running for local office through one-on-one conversations. In the final installment of our election edition of One Small Step produced by Alyson Spery, we hear from two candidates: Devon Viehman who's running for town council and Jerry Bosch who's running for the school board.    Jackson Unpacked airs locally at 89.1 FM or via live-stream Mondays at 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and Fridays and Sundays at 12:30 p.m. Support Jackson's only nonprofit newsroom by becoming a member of KHOL today.
