It is the only book that gives an overview of the use of archival footage and how it played an expanding and crucial role in documentary and TV films. Readers learn how to research images and clear the rights.Part One is an overview of archival footage, reviewing exactly what constitutes archival material and how it fits within the broader history of film and TV production. It also introduces the areas of research and legal parameters to the reader.Part Two examines the variety of styles of entertainment programming that use archival footage, including separate sections on network magazine formats, cable reality shows, webisodes, PBS documentaries, feature-length documentaries, and how documentaries can sway public opinion. Each Part offers interviews with experts who give a realistic idea of how they've used stock footage in their own work.Part Three covers Visual Literacy 101, a short course on how to “read” a film. By looking at only a few seconds of footage, one can deduce some very important facts about the film. This part makes a detective out of any researcher or editor who is determined to find the most authentic setting and context for their film.Part Four discusses how to use archival footage, writing a script that includes archival material, editing archival material, negotiating rights and budgeting constraints. If you ever wanted to know how to get, use or sell stock and archival footage for your film get ready to take notes.Enjoy my conversation with James Forsher.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

Dave Hill is a comedian, writer, musician, actor, radio host, and man-about-town originally from Cleveland, Ohio but now living in New York City in a totally sweet apartment with a party deck and everything. Hot chicks come over to hang out and eat cheese plates and stuff with him all the time and it's awesome. Anyway, on the show business front, Dave has appeared on Netflix's The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Adult Swim's Joe Pera Talks with You Amazon's The Tick, Peacock TV's Girls5Eva, Comedy Central's @midnightand Inside Amy Schumer programs, TBS' Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, TV Land's The Jim Gaffigan Show, and TruTV's Comedy Knockout among a bunch of others. He is a frequent on-air host for HBO and Cinemax and has been on channels like MTV, VH1, BBC-America, and the Sundance Channel a whole bunch too. Dave also starred in his own television program The King of Miami on the Mojo Network, which was cancelled even though Dave really liked it. The show also aired in the United Kingdom on Sky TV's Film24 Channel. And you can still watch The King of Miami on Hulu too, which Dave is super pumped about. Oh, and Dave was a correspondent on Hoppus on Music starring Blink 182's Mark Hoppus on the Fuse channel, which ruled. Dave has been on other shows and in obscure movies too but let's keep moving for now. Dave performs live comedy over the world and has appeared at such festivals as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, SXSW, San Francisco Sketchfest, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Sasquatch Festival, Bumbershoot, Bonnaroo, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, the Crap Comedy Festival in Oslo, Outside Lands in San Francisco, and then some other ones too. He has also performed comedy at Sing Sing Correctional Facility twice and even ripped some guitar solos inside a Mexican prison a couple times too. In 2007, Variety magazine named Dave one of their “10 Comedians to Watch,” something he still won't shut up about. Some things are hard to let go of. Dave hosted his own radio show The Goddamn Dave Hill Show on WFMU in Jersey City, New Jersey every Monday night from 9pm to midnight for years and now hosts the podcast Dave Hill's Podcasting Incident, which is also broadcast on the UK's Fubar Radio, So...You're Canadian with Dave Hill, and History Fluffer, on which he is joined by Jim Biederman, Jodi Lennon, and Chris Gersbeck. Dave is also a frequent contributor to public radio's Live from Here with Chris Thile and This American Life. He has also appeared on podcasts like WTF with Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla Show, The Nerdist, and then roughly 78 other ones besides those. He has also written for the New York Times, GQ, Salon, The Paris Review, McSweeney's, New York Observer, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, VICE, Guitar World, and a bunch of other places too. Comedy legend Dick Cavett called Dave “a major figure among American comic writers, past and present,” which is pretty much the coolest thing that has ever happened as far as Dave is concerned. Dave is also a musician who currently sings and plays guitar in the power pop band Valley Lodge, whose song “Go” is the theme song to HBO's Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and the psych/garage rock band Painted Doll. He was also a member of Cleveland rock bands Sons of Elvis and Cobra Verde as well as Diamondsnake, a heavy metal band with Moby. Additionally, Dave has played guitar for Walter Schreifels and muscle metal band Thor and bass for Lucy Wainwright Roche and former Faith No More singer Chuck Mosley. He also contributed musical scores to films such as Dirty Deeds, Shoot First and Pray You Live, and then some other ones besides those two. Dave's Info https://www.davehillonline.com

Elayne Boosler: Timeless Elayne Boosler's comedy special compilation, Timeless, will be released by Comedy Dynamics on August 31, 2018 on DVD/CD and on the Comedy Dynamics Network. The boxed set, Timeless, will include specials not available since they first aired:Party of One, the special Elayne funded herself in 1986, Broadway Baby (1987),Top Tomata(1989), and Live Nude Girls(1991), each in its own way groundbreaking and funny for all time. As a bonus, Elayne's new album, The 50/50 Club, recorded live around the country, rounds out the set. Boosler‘s Party of Oneblew open the locked gates for female standup comedians on TV. She is best known for her thoughtful and feisty socially conscious humor, and love of animals. For over forty years, she has appeared on seemingly every talk show on TV, has written and starred in five of her own one-hour Showtime standup comedy specials, written and directed two movies for Cinemax, and has hosted specials, series, and events. She writes for print media, and founded and runs Tails of Joy animal rescue. “The political jokes in these specials could have been written today. That's how slowly things change – great for me, bad for us. If the shoulders on my outfits were only smaller, we could have said these were new,” jokes Elayne. “It's an honor to play even a tiny part in the career of an artist who made history as often as Elayne did,” said Brian Volk-Weiss, CEO of Comedy Dynamics. Hello all you Ed-Heads, and TImbos What happens when you take the gore, and splatter of slop out of the Troma movies? You add in a basic Cinemax structure, and you get this. Whatever this is. A witch who is trying to sacrifice a hitchhiker to summon Asmodeus via blood ritual with a glowing red stone. She gets interrupted, by a trapper, who rapes her, makes her his slave bride, and gives her three daughters. He also splits the stone in 3, and sells them. Then one of his daughters is bitten by a vampire at night, gets the ring back, becomes a witch, and thats the big bad guy? also her 2 sisters do as well? I'm so confused by this movie.. "How are ya?" To fans of SCTV that can mean only one thing -- Bobby Bittman is in the house. The creation of Eugene Levy, Bobby is the epitome of a certain era of comic -- very loud, very full of himself, and very Vegas. Whether as a guest on the Sammy Maudlin show, his own special, or on other shows within the SCTV universe, a Bittman appearance would guarantee lame jokes, false sincerity, and a lot of shtick. Levy played the character throughout SCTV's six seasons and a few years after that show wrapped created a faux-documentary for Cinemax called The Enigma of Bobby Bittman. So take yourself back to the era when Johnny still ruled late night tv and the Vegas shtick masters still roamed the strip and prepare yourself for the comedy magic of Bobby Bittman. As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Bittman? Bobby always greeted fans with his catch phrase -- well, it was really just "How are ya?" but delivered in a way you could feel the bombast on it's way. This time out Bobby cuts a library PSA though he appears to have little familiarity with the services they provide. https://youtu.be/PDHiHIKIOFs?si=GLlLaE96kbfDYnaJ Bobby's main hang on SCTV was on the Sammy Maudlin show, a parody of celebrity "love fest" talk shows. This is worth every minute of its run time -- it's the Sammy Maudlin 23rd anniversary special. You're welcome!https://youtu.be/eqsGIMHNNcI?si=UzDwgd9S-gv_ZKy3 Bobby (as played by Eugene Levy) had an ego that knew no bounds. The same could be said for John Candy's Orson Welles. Put them together in a show called The Mirthmakers and allow them to over-intellectualize about comedy and the result is SCTV magic. https://youtu.be/xA_xROmH-oc?si=d4ObQEELAhQKx3C4 Unlike SNL, SCTV often built entire shows around extended movie parodies and one of the best was Maudlin's Eleven, a razor sharp parody of the Rat Pack movie Ocean's Eleven. Painfully on point, and Bobby Bittman is right in the middle of it all. https://youtu.be/qbd25kYIiuQ?si=I5Ga1PRROENolfbt

This week we are talking "Howling 2: Your Sister is a Werewolf." This one is on the Mount Rushmore of terrible sequels and has a cast with Christopher Lee, Sybill Danning, and Reb Brown. We brought back our bad sequel expert, not by choice, Nick. This one had us discussing if this was filmed for Cinemax late night, the convict from Pee Wee Herman, Captain America, an old lady turning into Sybill Danning, werewolf rules, and more. So grab your white shades like Stefan and enjoy! Watch the unedited review at sequelsonly.com/howling2 The next sequel is "Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest"; I chatted with an actor I have loved over the years, Lee Arenberg and he did not disappoint. Lee talked about his early days and starting a theater group with Tim Robbins, his early credits include Night Court, Perfect Strangers, and Seinfeld. Then we discussed landing the role in Pirates of the Caribbean as Pintel. It was an awesome chat; we even talked a little football because Lee is a lifelong Raiders fan. Charle Band's family run longtime drive-in theater turned home video business gathered a popular cult audience for its many movies that made deals with Paramount Picture's video department and other indie media ventures as well as premiering its many creative, low-brow, joyfully cheesy and sometimes surprisingly imaginative adult, mature and occasionally gory/pornographic titles on home video and on select cable channels like HBO, Cinemax and SyFy Channel. Doug Dietz (from The Good, The Bad & The Sequel Podcast) helps sum up his personal experiences and connection to Mr. Band's non-stop indie film empire, our admiration for the man and the best way to introduce newcomers to the whacky shenanigans! It's Die Hard in Boston! This week on the show, Phil and Liam break out their ropiest accents to discuss the 1994 action-thriller BLOWN AWAY, starring Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones. “It's Die Haaad in Boston! What - you think you better than me or somethin'?” Jimmy Dove (Jeff Bridges), a veteran member of the Boston bomb squad, is planning to retire and settle down with his partner Kate (Suzy Amis) and her daughter Lizzie, when escaped prisoner Ryan Gaerity (Tommy Lee Jones) targets him and his fellow team members in a relentless urban bombing campaign. We come to learn that Jimmy and Ryan have a dark history together that traces back to the troubles in Northern Ireland, where they were both complicit in bombing attacks that had tragic consequences for all involved. Propelled into theatres in the summer of 1994 by its bombastic trailer, BLOWN AWAY was ultimately something of a box-office disappointment, and received heavy criticism for some of the accent work, as well as what was perceived as insensitive Irish stereotyping. However, as Phil and Liam unearth through their incisive analysis, there's much more going on in this flawed but fascinating film than meets the eye. Boston-native Liam can speak to this film's evocative cultural milieu from his personal experience growing up as an Irish-American in Massachusetts. He gives his two cents on what the film gets right, what it gets wrong, and what it might be saying about the Irish immigrant experience in America. The guys then take a scenic tour through the nine circles of hell, exploring the film's striking Catholic imagery, its literary allusions, and its powerful themes of guilt, shame, and suffering. The boys consider dying the LA River green en route to the ‘Die Hard Oscars', a special guest makes an appearance in the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz to represent the embattled AI community, and due to popular demand, Marco returns…with a vengeance! BLOWN AWAY trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3N-e9BLZFo At the time of release, BLOWN AWAY is streaming on Max, DirectTV, Cinemax, and AppleTV/Paramount +, and is available to rent or buy through Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu, RedBox, AMC and all the usual platforms. They cover the historical time period in which the show is set, how this country has never really figured out its relationship with immigrants, the themes explored in the show that are still relevant today, the graphic novel vibe, how they tackled language, why swagger was the most important component of the main character, how Jonathan got his start in the industry, and why one of the skills of a showrunner is being really nice to everyone on your crew because you need everyone really badly. Can you sum up your marketing message in three words? (And would customers “get” it?)Like, can you write it in plain language—just a few words that would make sense to your audience? Because if you - the B2B marketer - get it, your audience will too, right? Maybe not.On this episode of Remarkable, we're learning from the 90s classic movie Speed about keeping it simple. The movie can literally be summed up in three words: “Bomb on bus.” It's a blissfully simple premise that rocked viewers, made Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock stars, and raked in $350 million dollars at the box office. And we're bringing on board Director of Content Strategy at 6Sense, Chris Hutchins, to talk storytelling, using character tropes, and fictionalizing your B2B marketing. So grab your popcorn and buckle up for the wild ride that is this latest, greatest episode of Remarkable as we talk about Speed (“Not the drug, but the movie” - Ian Faison).About the movie SpeedSpeed is a 1994 action movie starring Keanu Reeves as young police officer Jack Traven who has to keep a bomb from exploding on a city bus by staying above 50 mph. It also stars Sandra Bullock as the female counterpoint, Annie, who ironically had had her drivers' license revoked for speeding but steps in when the bus driver is shot. And of course the villain is played by Dennis Hopper as Howard Payne, the madman who rigged the bus with the bomb in the first place. Speed was written by Graham Yost and directed by Jan de Bont.About our guest, Chris HutchinsChris is a versatile, deadline-driven content director, editor and writer with corporate go-to-market, creative agency and professional journalism experience. He uses nimble workflows to produce world-class content at scale. His agency work has engaged millions of consumers worldwide.Chris is currently the Director of Content Strategy for 6sense, an ABM platform. He also provides consulting services for SMBs that need help with content strategy, content production, branding and messaging. In addition, he helps craft award-winning immersive marketing narratives, screenplays and novels for companies such as 20th Century Fox, A&E, Cinemax, Discovery, FOX Broadcasting, Infiniti, Macmillan Publishers and Ubisoft. He has been profiled by The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR's Weekend Edition, ABC Radio and the BBC.What B2B Companies Can Learn From Speed: Keep the story simple. Use simple, straightforward language to explain what your marketing message is. Drop the jargon and boil down your message. Chris says that your audience needs a simple story, especially in the beginning, “to get the hook and begin to get an understanding of our content or product.” He says you don't want prospective customers opening your site to find the content to be far over their heads. Speed does this with its simple premise that anyone can understand, that grabs attention and conveys a sense of immediacy.Fictionalize your story. Add fictionalized elements to your B2B marketing to grab your audience's attention, invite their curiosity, and inspire them to share their experience on social media. Chris shared an example of an event that incorporated a sort of online scavenger hunt. He says, “You just need to color outside the lines just a little bit to make it memorable.” And that the effect can be dramatic, especially in the B2B world. We see fictionalized elements in Speed as well, like when the bus has to cross an unfinished overpass, effectively leaping over a 50-foot gap in the road. Viewers are invited to suspend their disbelief to continue following the storyline. That fictional element is an invitation to go deeper into the story, deeper into engagement.Quotes*”When I think about blissful storytelling, it's uncomplicated. Here is a movie done 30 years ago that is just pure bliss because you don't have to have a deep knowledge of X, Y, and Z. You are just there for the ride.” - Chris Hutchins*”As B2B content creators and marketers, we often assume our audience has the same kind of comprehensive knowledge about our product, when in fact, we are the ones who are drinking the Kool-Aid. They need the simple story - at least in the beginning - to get the hook, and to get an understanding and become delighted and dazzled by our solution. Make it as plain spoken as possible. And make sure that our readers who are coming to our site, likely for the first time, find something that isn't overwhelming or over their heads.” - Chris Hutchins*”The B2B equivalent of a blissful story is simply told and invites curiosity. It gets you from the beginning of the story to the end. And then keeps you engaged to investigate more.” - Chris Hutchins*”When you are starting to get sick of your messaging, that means that it's probably starting to sink in with your audience.” - Ian Faison*“Don't try to be every single thing. Just try to focus and say, ‘This is exactly the utility that you're gonna get from this thing.' It's not gonna be 50 other things. It's just gonna be this one.” - Ian Faison“The first 30 minutes of the movie is not set on a bus. And the last 30 minutes of the movie is not set on a bus. But all we remember when we talk about speed is the stuff on the bus. So what do you want your audience to remember? What do you want them to remember feeling?” - Chris Hutchins“There are ways to enhance your narrative with fictional elements or fictionalized elements. You just need to color outside the lines just a little bit to make it memorable for them. It's wildly, wildly experimental stuff in the world of B2B. But the path of creating these experiences, while it's a non-trivial thing to accomplish, it's absolutely possible and the promotional upside can be really dramatic.” - Chris HutchinsTime Stamps[1:20] Get to know Chris Hutchins, Director of Content Strategy at 6Sense[2:41] Tell me more about Speed[7:43] What makes Speed Remarkable?[12:23] How to keep your brand message simple[16:08] Ask: What do you want your audience to remember feeling about your brand?[19:39] What is 6Sense?[22:40] How does Chris use his experience as a narrative writer in his marketing work at 6Sense, and what can we learn from it?[28:53] Why don't we use fiction more in B2B?[35:28] How could you apply fiction to a B2B event?LinksWatch SpeedConnect with Chris Hutchins on LinkedInLearn more about 6SenseCheck out Chris' work and writingAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Actor Chen Tang is back as the irrepressible Chinese hitman "Hong" in the MAX series Warrior. Originally created by Cinemax and based on Bruce Lee's original writings, the first two seasons garnered rave reviews and spawned a rabid fanbase. But when Cinemax decided that it would no longer fund original programming, Warrior seemed to have hit a dead end. However, MAX (formerly known as HBO Max) quickly saw that this series first two seasons were hugely popular on their platform, so they reunited the Warrior team, rebuilt 19th century Chinatown set in South Africa, and Season 3 is now set to launch on June 29th! Every aspect of this show is top-shelf, which is why I've been a longtime fan and why I'm so excited to see what's in store for this new season.
