In this week's episode of Hypnotic healers, Nicole and Anthony have a really good discussion around being kind to yourself and thanking your subconscious for making changes. Consciously thanking your subconscious or unconscious for playing ball and making the changes you've asked for is an important part of the change work; it's the part of the process where you acknowledge and show gratitude to yourself, thus improving the most important relationship you will ever have, and inviting your crew to continue making positive changes. Appreciate this episode? Buy me a coffee! :) Love this podcast? Tell me (and the world) Join me on Facebook   In this episode I write by hand, lying in bed. I read the journal entry and after all of it I put my book and pencil down and fall asleep. There is calming music in the background and All is recorded stereo and I am gently suggesting you relax and fall asleep.     Script:   Welcome to yet another episode of Relax with Slow Norwegian.    Podcast listening numbers is growing, and before launching the former 4 episodes this year, the only episodes of this year, the podcast was running quite strong with a growing number of followers, and just as soon as I started publishing again, the listening numbers spiked dramatically!    Six thousand two hundred listens only on the four episodes I have been publishing over the last six weeks, with a total of over nine thousand downloads counting all previous episodes too.    I am proud of my self being for consistent over the last weeks and I am planning to continue this newfound inspiration and drive.  I also want to share with you that the money you guys have donated, I have put them towards a website for the show. www.slownorwegian.com! I am very happy about that, although it is still a work in progress. With the website it will be easier to look for specific episodes as I will also group episodes with tags. For example if you want to listen as you go to bed, you can apply the tag and the website will pull up all the most relaxing content I have created. I believe this upgrade will be a benefit for all, as more people will find me, It will be easidr to leave a review and to contribute to the show, and as a result I will be able to fokus more of my time creating new content. You contributing to the show is the only way I earn something for my work, so if you enjoy listening, please head over to my website: Slownorwegian.com and contribute the amountthat feels right and just for you.    Ok. so… about this episode.  It is slightly different from the former ones… It is a sleep friendly episode still, and very sleep friendly in my opinion, as I have actually recorded this episode in bed! I am having a cold, so my voice and breathing might sound a little different.    I take my notebook with me and I write a little diary about my life as a mom to a girl who just started school. There are many emotions involved for all of us and I also write about who I want to be as a mom and how I want to meet my growing child through the different stages of her life. With compassion and understanding. I want her to alway feel safe coming home, nomatter her days experiences and I want her to feel accepted and loved although she might have acted in a way that is not in line with our values. Love first - talk after.    I was very rebellious myself as a youth and I believe that we would all have a better experience if I was met with more understanding and less punishment. I might have done many of the same things, but maybe my image of myself would be more loving and I would heal faster, from the many hurts youth can bring, into adulthood…    I am not blaming anyone, I love my dad, and I know he did his very best and acted the best he could with the advice he would get from the world on parenting.  am just being aware of me having a different opportunity to approach parenthood differently as the world has changed and the ideas of what is good parenting has changed.    Well. After I write the episode I read it slowly. However, You will listen to the reading before the writing as I will organize them in that order, and in the end I put the pencil down and we can fall asleep together as I continue to record as I close my eyes and travel into the subconscious world of dreams. You might hear Jonas, Eirs dad in the far background, from time to time , as he is sitting downstairs talking.   Now, if you are not already in a good position, readjust yourself to be as comfortable as you can in this moment, If there are any outside sounds, please just ignore them as you soon will focus only on my voice and feel so very relaxed. Give yourself permission to fall asleep at any point during this episode, and know that it is also ok if it takes a little longer. If you havent closed your eyes, Slowly just close them now and allow the muscles around your eyes relax too. Let your face relax… your mouth and jaw. Take a few deep breaths in and out from your nose, and feel the breath traveling all the way down to your stomach, and giving you a sense of release as you let the breath back out. Good. Enjoy this writing session. I am proud of you for taking care of your need for relaxation. I love you. Ok my friend. That was me reading the diary entry I wrote just a moment before. Now I will share the recording of me writing it with you. So just continue to relax, if you need to readjust to get in a even better position for relaxation, just do that, and know that you are safe, loved and that you soon will enjoy a good night sleep. Know that it is ok for you to fall asleep now, and that there is nothing that is more important right now than your need for relaxation and sleep. Nothing is more important than allowing your body and mind to just relax.     (Recording of me writing)   (whispering) The writing session has come to an end. I hope and suspect you are very, very relaxed now, if not already sleeping. I will put my book and pencil away now and for the next few moments, I will be right here, falling asleep, energetically by your side.    I am proud of you. You are safe and you are loved.    Good night my friend. #Asmr #tingles #relax #braingasm #bedtime #fairytale #meditation #book #Norwegian #learn norwegian #whispering #whisper #whispered #soft voices #soft spoken #binaural #rain #Norway #meditation #meditate #sleep #hypnosis

Rio Bravo qWeek

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 26, 2022 19:48

Episode 105: Antidotes to toxidromes. Some poisonings share common signs and symptoms and may be treated with antidotes without laboratory confirmation of the offending agent. Dr. Francis discussed with Dr. Arreaza some of those toxidromes and how to treat them. Written by Aida Francis, MD. Participation by Hector Arreaza, MD. Definitions: • Antidotes are substances given as a remedy that inhibit the effects of another drug of abuse or poison. Most are not 100% effective and fatality is still possible after administration. • Toxidrome is a constellation of signs and symptoms caused by an overdose or exposure to chemicals or drugs that interact with neuroreceptors. Toxidrome is the combination of the word “toxin” and “syndrome”. Management strategies of toxidromes are determined by the signs and symptoms even when the causative agent has not been identified. A little bit of Background: The World Health Organization reported that 13% of deaths caused by poisonings are children and young adults. Intentional poisoning attempts are more frequent among adolescent women than men. It is difficult to evaluate poisoned patients because they are too altered to provide history and there is often not enough time to perform a physical exam or obtain serum studies prior to life-saving interventions. To diagnose a toxidrome clinically, you need three elements: pupil size, temperature, and bowel sounds. For example: Pinpoint pupils with hyperactive bowel sounds point to cholinergic toxidrome, and dilated pupils with high temperature, and hypoactive bowel sounds point to anticholinergic (see details below). Pinpoint pupils -> Bowel sounds -> Hyperactive: CHOLINERGIC -> Hypoactive: OPIOIDS Normal or dilated pupils -> Temperature -> High -> Bowel sounds -> Hyperactive: SYMPATHOMIMETIC -> Hypoactive: ANTICHOLINERGIC -> Normal or Low -> Bowel sounds -> Hyperactive: HALLOCUNOGENIC -> Hypoactive: SEDATIVE-HYPNOTICS Anticholinergic Toxidrome and the Physostigmine antidote: • Anticholinergics inhibit the binding of acetylcholine to the muscarinic receptors in the central nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Examples of anticholinergics include atropine and tiotropium. Other substances that may cause anticholinergic toxidrome include antihistamines (especially first-generation: diphenhydramine), antipsychotics (quetiapine), antidepressants (TCAs, paroxetine), and antiparkinsonian drugs (benztropine). Symptoms of toxicity include tachycardia, non-reactive mydriasis, anhidrosis, dry mucous membranes, skin flushing, decreased bowel sounds, and urinary retention. Neurological symptoms include delirium, confusion, anxiety, agitation, mumbling, visual hallucination, and strange behavior. Neurological symptoms last longer because of the anticholinergic lipophilic properties which cause them to distribute into fatty organs and tissues like the brain. “Mad as a hatter, red as a beet, blind as a bat, hot as a hare, dry as a bone” [Spanish: loco como una cabra, rojo como un tomate, ciego como un topo, seco como una piedra, caliente como el infierno] • The antidote for anticholinergic toxidrome is physostigmine. It is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and prevents the metabolism of acetylcholine. This increases the level of acetylcholine in both the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Physostigmine can cause seizures and arrhythmia, so close monitoring in the hospital is required during treatment. Cholinergic toxidrome and its antidotes atropine and pralidoxime: Acetylcholine is part of the parasympathetic nervous system and cholinergic substances can induce a parasympathetic response. Some of these substances include pesticides, organophosphates, carbamate, and nerve gas. Chlorpyrifos had been used to control insects in homes and fields since 1965. It has been used in our crops in Bakersfield, and the most recent mass exposure was in May 2017. it was banned on food crops in the US in August 2021. It has been banned for residential use for a longer period. Repeated exposure to chlorpyrifos causes autoimmune disorders and developmental delays in children and fetuses. The symptoms of cholinergic toxidrome can be summarized with the SLUDGE/ “triple” BBB acronym. This includes salivation, lacrimation, urination, defecation, gastrointestinal cramping, emesis, bradycardia, bronchorrhea, and bronchospasm. There can also be muscle fasciculations and paralysis. • The antidote is Atropine. Pralidoxime is used for organophosphates only because it cleaves the organophosphate-acetylcholinesterase complex to release the enzyme to degrade acetylcholine. Pralidoxime should be used in combination with atropine, not as monotherapy. It requires hospital admission, and a note for organophosphate, remember that the patient needs external decontamination (shower). Let's go to part 2 of our discussion, environmental exposure. Carbon Monoxide Toxidrome and the antidote oxygen: Carbon monoxide intoxication is usually due to smoke inhalation injury. Carbon monoxide is a silent gas produced by carbon-containing fuel or charcoal. Carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) forms in red blood cells when hemoglobin combines with carbon monoxide, reducing the binding and availability of oxygen at the tissue level. It's like CO falls in love with hemoglobin and hemoglobin cheats on Oxygen by binding to CO instead, and neglects oxygen delivery to tissues. Carbon monoxide also causes direct cellular toxicity. The symptoms and signs of poisoning include headache, altered mental status, nausea, vomiting, visual disturbance, Cherry-red lips, coma, and seizure. You can also see lactic acidosis and pulmonary edema. Neurological symptoms can be chronic, so it's important to follow up. The blood COHb level must be used to confirm the diagnosis because standard pulse oximetry (SpO2) and arterial partial oxygen pressure (PaO2) cannot differentiate COHb from normal oxygenated hemoglobin. You must obtain a serum COHb level. • The antidote is 100% oxygen or hyperbaric oxygen therapy and close follow-up. Consider intubating if there is edema of the airways due to inhalation injury. Cyanide Toxidrome which include sodium nitrite, sodium thiosulfate, and hydroxocobalamin In combination with Carbon Monoxide poisoning Cyanide poisoning can simultaneously be caused by inhalation of smoke or colorless hydrogen cyanide or ingestion of cyanide salts or prolonged use of sodium nitroprusside (ICU for hypertensive emergency). Symptoms are very similar to carbon monoxide poisoning. There may be long-term neurologic deficits and Parkinsonism. Diagnosis is clinical and waiting for serum cyanide levels can cause treatment delay. However, serum lactate levels over 10 mmol/L suggest cyanide poisoning. • Since cyanide poisoning resembles carbon monoxide poisoning and both toxidromes typically present simultaneously in the pathognomonic fire victim, treat simultaneously with sodium nitrite, sodium thiosulfate, and hydroxocobalamin as well as oxygen as mentioned with carbon monoxide poisoning. Hypnotic and sedative substances (antidote: flumazenil) Examples of hypnotic or sedative substances are alcohol, benzodiazepines, or zolpidem. Signs and symptoms of toxicity include slurred speech, ataxia, incoordination, disorientation, stupor, and coma with mild and rare hypoventilation and bradycardia. • The antidote is flumazenil which is a competitive antagonist at the benzodiazepine receptor. After treatment monitor patients for seizures in case of TCA poisoning, arrhythmia, or epilepsy. Opioid toxidrome (antidote: naloxone) Examples of opioid intoxication in children would be heroine in adolescents or accidental ingestion of pain medication in young children. Signs and symptoms are similar to the sedative toxidrome except for the pathognomonic finding of miosis or “pinpoint pupils” on physical exam. There will also be respiratory depression, hyporeflexia, bradycardia, muscle rigidity, and absent bowel sounds or constipation. Hypoventilation is severe and can cause death. • The antidote is naloxone which is a synthetic opioid receptor antagonist that can diagnose and treat opioid poisoning. It is indicated if the respiratory rate is less than 12. It has a short half-life and is repeatedly administered every 3-5 minutes until the respiratory drive is restored in order to avoid rebound respiratory depression and intubation. It has a rapid onset so the patient must be observed for 24 hours for opioid withdrawal symptoms. Summary: It is important to be able to recognize a toxidrome and antidote early. Once the antidote is administered, you should observe the patient 24 hours for symptoms of rebound toxicity or withdrawal. Consider repeat administration of the antidote if rebound symptoms occur and treat withdrawal symptoms as needed. Don't forget to consider multidrug poisoning if symptoms are non-specific. Thank you for having me on your podcast to review this topic. ____________________________ Conclusion: Now we conclude our episode number 108, “Antidotes to Toxidromes.” Remember you can start treatment of a patient with typical signs and symptoms of specific toxidromes, especially in patients who are unstable. Appreciate this episode? Buy me a coffee! :) Love this podcast? Tell me (and the world) Join me on Facebook Here is the original script for this episode in NORWEGIAN.  Relax with slow Norwegian, August 2022 Tiden flyr. Google translated text into english: Relax with slow Norwegian, August 2022 Time flies. The days go by. Think that it has come to the end of summer already. Now I'm sitting in my old office room where I used to live and writing the content for a new episode. I can't believe it's been almost a whole month since the last time.  Last time I had microphones closer to the keyboard focusing on the sounds from there. This time I sit and write with the microphones very close to my mouth. No more than 5-10 cm. I'm curious what I like best and what you like best of these two options. Maybe it depends on the form of the day? Whether you want a voice very close to your ears or not. I listen to myself at the same time as I write, and I notice that I'm getting a little short of breath from speaking so very quietly. I kind of hold my breath a little bit so as not to blow too much air out of the room, because then it "bangs" in the microphones and thus in our ears. I don't think it's very pleasant to listen to. From time to time, ideas race through my head about what I can do here on the podcast. I have received feedback from you that you like that there is a slight difference in the episodes and the content. Lately I've been thinking about just making lists of words, or reading from a cookbook or something, as the content itself isn't the most important thing, just that it's carried out in a calm and pleasant way.  At the beginning of this podcast, I read a lot from snl.no, which is the Store norske lexikon website. From there, many articles are legal to reproduce without having an agreement with the author. I read from large Norwegian encyclopedias, I read from my own blog and from the treasure chest, a school and home encyclopedia. I think it was called a conversational dictionary. Knowledge to have something to talk about. For my part, I like to talk about what goes on inside me and inside you, philosophizing about what we are, what the world is and what we do here. The meaning of life and these things. And then I like to talk, or converse nicely, about ideas and dreams and how we can achieve them.  What do you like to talk about when you meet a close and dear friend?  I'm starting to run out of words today. I don't have much to share right now.  But I'll do some digging. By that I mean that I will explore my own head a little to see if something comes up that I want to write about here and now.  I can mention that Eir and I returned from a road trip a few days ago. We took a really nice girl's trip, her and I. First we visited Mikkelparken in Kinsarvik, then we drove to Lillestrøm and went to the climbing park there before we drove to Oslo and spent 3 days at Bogstad farm where they have rabbits and chickens and turkeys and livestock, in addition to a lovely fauna of a garden with both edible plants and growths as well as what is only pleasing to the eye. We were very lucky to spend so much time visiting this nice place, as we were able to spend the night in the car there as we were visiting a friend who lives there. Because they don't have an accommodation offer there. But it is well worth visiting this place just for a day visit, especially if it is summer and hot, as there is a swimming place nearby. It's called Bogstadvannet there. It is also free to park and they have a cafe there during the day between 12:00 and 16:00 I think. But don't take my word for it. Find out for yourself if you are planning a visit. It was very relaxing to hang out in the park there with lovely views and a comfortable family friendly atmosphere. Good space!   After this we drove to Bjørneparken in Flå, which is located in Hallingdal. We had a great day there too and a very nice end to our trip. We drove up the mountain and parked in the middle of heather and other shrubbery before driving to Voss the following morning.  I forgot to mention that on the trip away we took a walk on the mountain and slid on our bums down the snow that hasn't melted yet, and may never melt, unless we have record heat. It was fun and exciting for both of us to sled on the snow on a summer day at the end of July!  But now we are back at home and using the days as best we can to be outside and enjoy the rest of the summer, which means down to 12 degrees and rain! But we get dressed and go out into the forest, make a fire and look for mushrooms and berries. It's lovely to be outside and there's something strange about it because all food somehow tastes much better when we prepare it outside! In the last few days we have found chanterelles and porcini mushrooms, and I have noticed a curiosity for the world of mushrooms. Yesterday we went out with a mushroom book, and I discovered a new edible mushroom. New to me to be sure, and it doesn't take much, because I've never really been on a mushroom trip. So now I want to learn more, as I have more to do outside in the autumn too! The mushroom I found yesterday is called a red-yellow porcupine and cannot easily be confused with anything else, so I felt quite safe when I put it in the basket. I haven't tasted it yet! But it will be exciting. Last year I made a dish of onions, rice and chanterelles. It was very good.  Look there, yes. Still, I had a bit of a crush on me.  Now I see that I have recorded for 45 minutes and I think that is a suitable length for this episode. After all, I will also read this text and perhaps also post a few words. We'll see. I want to find a way to make sure I'm motivated to make these episodes consistently, and if I'm giving myself too much work with each episode, then it takes more of me to motivate myself to do the work. Naturally. So what I want to find is a balance. Something that creates value for you and me and that doesn't feel like work. I love this , even if it is time-consuming. When I don't manage to organize my time well enough, I fall behind and it doesn't feel good, because I want to create. I want to stand up and do the things that I feel give me both mastery and joy!  My stomach rumbles and I forget that I said it was time to call it quits this time.  Finally, I just want to remind you that it is so appreciated if you leave a review where you listen to the podcast and feel free to follow me on Facebook too: Relax with slow Norwegian podcast.  Tusen takk for at du er her og for at du er du. So many hypnotherapists shy away from doing any kind of public demonstration as they lack the confidence, have the idea that it will be terrible if it 'doesn't work' or they don't know how to do demos. Being able to do impromptu hypnosis is not about embarrassing people, rather about showing people something amazing; something they didn't know they could do. My trigger button is pretty hot. So listening to a self-hypnosis recording, about not being triggered has helped me tremendously to be able to notice when I'm triggered, to be able to disassociate, and hit the cool button instead of the hot button has absolutely changed my life. And every time I noticed that I'm getting to that place again, I put that recording on and it reels me right in.  Hypnotic Approach to Wellness Thoughts on Breathing My favorite, I guess it's not a technique, it's more of a mindfulness technique and it's really a hypnotic induction. So to notice that when I breathe in how the air is cool and refreshing, and to notice that when I exhale, it's warm and relaxing. And doing that just a few times puts me into a beautiful, trance-like state, or depending on the circumstance, it reminds me that it is safe to be here now. Hypnotic Approach to Wellness Suggested Resources Book: The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book) App: LastPass Bullying Story So in middle school, I don't want to say that I was bullied because I saw people, I saw friends being bullied. And that was kind of different than being picked on a little bit. I was very small for my age, sometimes I was referred to as the runt of the family. I was smaller than everyone even though I was the oldest. I was even called an Oompa Loompa for being so tiny and short. So those things kind of stuck with me but as far as being bullied, if you've ever ridden the school bus, bullying happens on the school bus. So I drove my son to school every day. And I think that deep down, I wanted to protect him from what happened on the school bus. I remember one time, some boys in the back of a bus, one boy was holding down the arm of a more scrawny kid. And the other one was just as far as I could tell they were going to break his arm. Therefore, I think mindfulness could have helped if I would have had the courage to say something. Hypnotic Approach to Wellness Related Episodes Mindfulness In The Motherhood Journey: Patty Castellanos Enjoy The Gift of the Present; Jennifer Ibbotson Rodriguez Human Design and Hypnosis For Transformation; Heidi Hazen Special Offer Are you experiencing anxiety & stress? Join a gym Men's hot flashes: Hypnotic relaxation may ease the discomfort men don't talk about     Cinnamon could stop Parkinson's in its tracks  Rush University Medical Center, July 14, 2022 In an article appearing in the Journal of Neuroimmune Pharmacology indicates that cinnamon could one day be used by Parkinson's disease patients to prevent the disease from progressing. Saurabh Khasnavis and Kalipada Pahan, PhD, of Rush University Medical Center studied the effects of the spice in a mouse model of Parkinson's disease. They found that when cinnamon is metabolized into sodium benzoate in the blood and brain, the loss of beneficial proteins known as Parkin and DJ-1 is halted, while neurons that produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is reduced in Parkinson's, are protected. Motor function, which can be significantly impaired by the disease, was improved in animals that received cinnamon. "Cinnamon is metabolized in the liver to sodium benzoate, which is an FDA-approved drug used in the treatment for hepatic metabolic defects associated with hyperammonemia," explained lead researcher Dr Pahan "Cinnamon has been used widely as a spice throughout the world for centuries,” he noted. “This could potentially be one of the safest approaches to halt disease progression in Parkinson's patients."     Leucine-rich protein supplements could benefit adults with sarcopenia Seoul National University College of Medicine, July 15 2022.  Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by muscle wasting that contributes to frailty in aging men and women. Results from a meta-analysis of randomized trials reported in the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics concluded that protein supplements rich in the essential branched-chain amino acid leucine could improve muscle strength in sarcopenic individuals. “The treatment of choice for sarcopenia is still resistance exercise with nutritional supplementation because no pharmacological agents to treat sarcopenia have become available yet,” Sang Yoon Lee, MD, PhD, and colleagues at Seoul National University College of Medicine noted.  The meta-analysis included 6 randomized, controlled trials that involved a total of 699 men and women with sarcopenia. Three hundred forty-six trial participants received a daily protein supplement containing 3 to 6 grams of leucine and 353 participants received a placebo or no leucine for 8 to 13 weeks. Muscle strength, muscle mass and physical performance were evaluated before and after the treatment periods. Muscle strength significantly improved in leucine-supplemented participants as a primary outcome in comparison with the control groups. There was also a trend toward improvement in muscle mass and physical performance in the groups that received leucine. There was no significant difference in response between lower and higher amounts of leucine. No serious adverse events were reported.     Nutrients for the bones Catalytic Longevity Foundation, July 13 2022.  A review appearing in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences describes how specific nutrients activate bone-preserving mechanisms. Osteoclasts are bone cells that break down bone tissue while osteoblasts synthesize bone. With respect to osteoblasts, the RUNX2 transcription factor is the master regulator of osteoblast formation and function, driving the transcription of a number of genes essential for the bone forming process. Signaling pathways that drive RUNX2 gene transcription are triggered by bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) 2 and 4. AMPK, which is activated by G. pentaphyllum, hesperidin and metformin, promotes BMP 2 and 4 expression in osteoblasts.  The protein Sirt1 promotes RUNX2 activity. Sirt1 activation is increased by melatonin, nicotinamide riboside, glucosamine and thymoquinone, found in Nigella sativa.  Activation of soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC), the only known nitric oxide receptor, also leads to the promotion of RUNX2. High doses of biotin activate sGC. Nrf2 regulates the cells' defense against oxidative stress, as well as enhancing the activation of RUNX2 in osteoblasts and osteocytes. Lipoic acid, melatonin, thymoquinone, astaxanthin and sulforaphane can promote Nrf2 activity.  Activation of these mechanisms also promotes autophagy, a process in which the cells consume their own damaged cellular components, which helps to prevent apoptosis (programmed cell death) and senescence in osteoblasts and osteocytes. “Regimens providing a selection of these nutraceuticals in clinically meaningful doses may have an important potential for preserving bone health,” the authors concluded. “Concurrent supplementation with taurine, N-acetylcysteine, vitamins D and K2, and minerals, including magnesium, zinc, and manganese, plus a diet naturally high in potassium, may also be helpful in this regard.”       Searching for meaning? Try appreciating the small things Texas A&M University, July 18, 2022 Appreciating the intrinsic beauty in life's everyday moments can contribute to a more meaningful existence, according to new research. In a paper recently published in Nature Human Behavior, Joshua Hicks, a professor in the Texas A&M University Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, says this may be a previously unaccounted for factor tied to perceptions of meaning. "It might not relate to whether you matter in the grand scheme of things, but we've shown people who value the little things, like your cup of coffee in the morning or being mindful in conversations with others, tend to have a high sense of meaning in life," he said. Hicks studies existential psychology. Put simply, he aims to understand the "big questions" in life. He describes his main focus as the experience of life—studying people's subjective feeling that their life has meaning. Scholars like Hicks generally agree there are three main sources of a subjectively meaningful existence: coherence, or the feeling that one's life "makes sense"; the possession of clear, long-term goals and sense of purpose; and existential mattering. This last factor, he says, is the belief that one's actions matter to others. What Hicks and his co-authors argue in their latest research is that appreciating and finding value in experiences, referred to as experiential appreciation, is a fourth fundamental pathway toward finding meaning in life.   Want a higher GPA in college? Join a gym Michigan State University, July 10, 2022   For those students looking to bump up their grade point averages during college, the answer may not be spending more time in a library or study hall, but in a gym.   New Michigan State University research shows that students who were members of the recreational sports and fitness centers on MSU's campus during their freshman and sophomore years had higher GPAs than those who weren't.   The research also indicated that students with memberships stayed in school longer. An increase of 3.5 percent in two-year retention rates was seen among this group.   The research supports previous theories suggesting that by creating an environment that connects students to an institution, in this case a university recreational facility, an increase in academic success and retention can occur. During the project, Pivarnik's team analyzed data from a sample of freshmen and sophomores, totaling 4,843 students, and compared the GPAs of those who purchased a fitness facility membership and those who did not. Results showed that after four consecutive semesters, the students with memberships obtained higher cumulative GPAs. They also had more credits completed by the end of their first year in college.     Men's hot flashes: Hypnotic relaxation may ease the discomfort men don't talk about Baylor University, July 10, 2022 Men who experience hot flashes are unlikely to talk much about it, but they may find relief from their silent suffering if they are willing to try an unusual treatment, according to findings from a Baylor University case study. After seven weeks of hypnotic relaxation therapy, a 69-year-old man who had uncontrolled hot flashes following prostate cancer surgery showed a drastic decrease not only in hot flashes but also an impressive improvement in sleep quality, according to the study. Men's hot flashes are, of course, not related to estrogen, the primary female sex hormone. They occur in men with a history of prostate cancer — the second most common malignancy in men — or another disorder causing a testosterone deficiency. Up to 80 percent of prostate survivors experience hot flashes, and about 50 percent of those experience them as severe and needing treatment. What's more, hot flashes due to prostate cancer tend to be more frequent, more severe and more prolonged than those women experience. The new research follows previous published studies by Elkins that found a marked decrease in hot flashes among postmenopausal women and also among breast cancer survivors who have undergone hypnotic relaxation therapy. It reduced hot flashes by as much as 80 percent, and research findings by clinically trained therapists show it also improved participants' quality of life and lessened anxiety and depression. (Quality of life included such issues as work, sexuality, social and leisure activities, mood and concentration.)
