Title: Gender Roles Part 2 Text: I Timothy 2:11-15 FCF: We often struggle submitting to God’s Word when it is not in line with our culture. Prop: Ultimately God has given roles to men and women that we ought not violate, so we must not allow women to have teaching or authority roles in the church. Scripture Intro: [Slide 1] Turn in your bible to I Timothy chapter 2. Last week we learned that there are certain roles within the church that when they are filled by men or women, they come with expectations. The kind of men that are to pray in worship services are those who are devout and peaceable. And the kind of women who are to learn in the worship services are those who are humble and submitted to their leaders. But flowing from that discussion of roles within the church, there is one such role that Paul eliminates for women. And praise the Lord, he tells us exactly why that is too. I am reading from the NET again today starting on page 1338 in the pew bible. I’ll begin reading in verse 8. Transition: I have attempted to cut as much as I can from this sermon in order to cram it in to our normal time we allot for the message. However, I could only do so much. I am warning you now that it will be a longer sermon. Of course, last week was only 38 minutes long – so you got off easy. This week will be longer. I’ve done my part to accommodate you – now you must do your part. Get uncomfortable, take off your sweaters, sit on a pin, or do whatever you need to do to stay with me. Here we go. I.) God does not place women in teaching or authority roles over men in His church, so we must not allow women to have teaching or authority roles in the church. (11-12) a. [Slide 2] 11 – A woman must learn quietly with all submissiveness. i. So we covered this verse last week, but I wanted to include it this week because much of what we have to cover this week comes from Paul’s given role to women as a learner. ii. From last week we understood that Paul’s role given to women is one of freedom. A role that communicated the equality of women to men in the gospel community. That role, is to be a learner. iii. Certainly, there are expectations on women learners. In summary they were to not be a distraction and not usurp their God given authority figures within the church. iv. But as long as women were these kinds of learners, they must be permitted to learn. v. We noted that this would have been extremely challenging for the men in the church in the first century. vi. However, this does lead Paul to specify a role that women cannot take, regardless of whether or not they are qualified. b. [Slide 3] 12 – But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man. She must remain quiet. i. Up to this point Paul has given qualifications for men who pray in the worship service, and he has given qualifications for women who learn in the worship service. ii. We noted that each of these roles could be done by the other gender, even though Paul only gives qualifications to specific genders. iii. However, due to the nature of the qualifications for a women to be a learner, Paul feels compelled to make himself plain about the boundary set for women being a learner. iv. Even given the new freedoms the Kingdom of God affords to women, there are still roles God intends only to offer certain kinds of people within His church. v. Now before we dive into what the text means – Let’s talk a little bit about the context of I Timothy and the clues we have in the text of the entire book for what may be behind this prohibition. 1. We know that there are certain men mythicizing the geologies in the law. This led to endless discussion and debate, with no real edification or teaching toward the Kingdom of God. 2. Hymenaeus has been excommunicated from the church as we saw in chapter 1. In II Timothy we learn that he was preaching a message which essentially said that the resurrection has already occurred, meaning that they were already in the new kingdom. This promoted a distorted view of God’s law in that things that were normally prohibited were no longer in effect, and things that were encouraged were now prohibited. 3. Jesus referenced a time in the new kingdom where people were no longer married or given to marriage. But they are like the angels, meaning eternal and non-replicating. Thus, the teachers in Ephesus were prohibiting marriage. 4. We see Paul desiring young widows to remarry rather than remain single. And in that instruction, he suggests that it is these young widows that have succumbed to false teachings. vi. With all this backdrop, we are able to make some educated guesses as to what is happening to force Paul to bluntly prohibit women from filling a certain role. Most likely, using Paul’s words against him, the argument was made that since they were in the new kingdom and there was no longer marriage, and there is no longer male and female in Christ – that the male and female genders no longer determined the opportunities and distinctions that were previously imposed before the resurrection. vii. [Slide 4] In short, Paul is dealing with young women in the church, unattached, most likely widowed, having gained considerable wealth, and having entertained these false teachers, have now succumbed to the false teaching of the resurrection. The results of this are evident in the corrective force Paul uses against their practices. They have rejected marriage, dipped into sexual immorality, they are now leading the church and usurping the authority and teaching roles from men and justifying it through the notion that the kingdom of God has come. viii. With that– let’s move to understand exactly what Paul is saying. ix. [Slide 5] Here specifically Paul says “I do not allow” is there wiggle room here? 1. Some suggest that since Paul is saying he personally does not allow this, that it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a standard for all churches everywhere. 2. However, Paul’s desire is for men to pray and for women to adorn themselves with good works. Are these too optional? 3. We should not interpret Paul’s desires or prohibitions to be so narrowly applied. Indeed, we believe the Spirit of God breathed these words out through Paul. Thus, Paul only desires this, because God desires it. x. He does not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man. So, we have to try to understand this, and to do so we must answer several questions. 1. [Slide 6] Is this a guiding principle for all of life, or is this specifically in reference to the church and doctrine? a. If this is a guiding rule for all life then there are several unpopular conclusions it would take. i. Women cannot teach anything to men. At all. ii. Women cannot lead men, in anything. b. It seems that just like men with prayer and women as a learner, this should be taken in the context of the assembly, and even specifically when the worship service assembles. c. Therefore, Paul is saying he does not permit a woman to teach doctrine nor to exercise church authority over a man within the assembly. d. However, I do not think it would be wrong to apply this outside the church. As unpopular as it is, governments reflect a godlier order when they have male leadership. I have many reasons for that position but that is a topic for another time. 2. [Slide 7] Is this over any man, her husband, or church authority? a. This word is singular. Not the men, but a man or husband. Therefore, making this mean church authority figures will not do. It is not simply that a woman cannot exercise authority over her spiritual leadership. It is more specific than that. b. This word can be translated husband or man. But its normal use is to be translated man unless the context dictates husband. The context of this passage does not include any instruction regarding marriage. c. Paul will reference Adam and Eve in a moment, bringing in the concept of marriage, but by the 15th verse he broadens the application beyond wives to all women. d. All this in consideration, it seems most likely that Paul is prohibiting women from inhabiting a role in reference to any man in the church. 3. [Slide 8] Is this two roles or one? a. If we view this is one role, it may seem like Paul is prohibiting women from teaching in an authoritative way. However, the grammatical construction here does not really permit this. b. After Paul says I do not allow the construction is [Infinitive] nor [infinitive] of a man. c. The most natural way to read this is – I do not permit a women to teach a man nor do I permit a woman to exercise authority over a man. d. Still, we cannot help but see a oneness in this. There may be two prohibitions here but they are inseparable. For all teaching of the scriptures is authoritative and all authority teaches. e. Indeed, what Paul says next about Elders in chapter 3, is essentially that they are responsible to be teachers and to exercise authority. f. But lest we think that Paul is simply prohibiting a woman from being an Elder, we must understand that if that is what Paul meant, he could have said such a thing. g. It is not necessarily the title that is not permitted, but the activity. 4. [Slide 9] But what does Paul mean by “teaching” a man and “exercising authority over” a man? a. Does this mean that a wife can never rebuke her husband? b. Does this mean that a mother cannot ever teach scripture to her adult son? c. Does this mean that a woman cannot make any decision in the church that adult men would need to submit to? d. Can Kim tell me not to use a restroom because she is mopping it? e. Can Joyce remind me of a passage of scripture that I have forgotten in foundations? f. To answer these questions, it may be helpful for us to go to two other passages of scripture. Now since these texts are purely supplemental to our main text today, we really won’t have time to dig into them the same way we have I Timothy. So, turn with me to read each and we’ll make some comments to help guide our understanding. i. [Slide 10] I Corinthians 11:2-16 1. Although the cultural symbol of authority in head coverings is not present in our society – certainly women attempting to secure equal authority as men is prevalent. 2. Paul does not eliminate a woman’s ability to pray and prophesy in church. However, she must do so in such a way as to communicate her submission to male authority. 3. Paul places the reasoning for this upon the creation of men and women and God’s creative purpose in each. 4. Yet Paul recognizes the co-dependance on both genders. 5. Paul espouses an equal but not equitable relationship between men and women. They are equal in regard to importance, worth, and creative work, yet not equitable in relation to role, responsibility, and creative purpose. 6. Nevertheless, what we need to see from here is that it is appropriate for women to prophesy so long as it is done without communicating authority over men. ii. [Slide 11] I Corinthians 14:26-36 1. Paul’s concern is order in the church. Which I would say is his concern in I Timothy 2 as well. 2. Paul first addresses speaking in tongues and their interpretation. If there is no interpreter all who speak in tongues ought to be silent. 3. The second gift is prophesy. Now when we think of prophesy we think of foretelling or predicting the future. However, here Paul speaks of prophesy that needs to be evaluated and is used for learning and encouragement. So it seems that prophesy is not the fore telling of the future but rather the forth telling of the word of God. 4. Yet not all who claim to have the gift of prophesy actually have it. And when someone says God says such and such and it means such and such – it must be evaluated and stacked against what else God has said and what else God meant. 5. After concluding with this thought of prophesy interpreting prophesy and God is a God of order, Paul says that in every church women should remain silent. As the law dictates of them. If they want to inquire further about something, they should seek their husband at home. 6. He then concludes with a sarcastic question further reinforcing that prophesy interprets prophesy. 7. So what is Paul forbidding women from doing? It isn’t prophesy. It isn’t saying this is what God says or even this is what it means. What is he forbidding? 8. The evaluation. Paul is forbidding women from being involved in the process of determining if a prophesy (even their own) is genuine, true, and ought to be adopted as doctrine of the church. 9. No prophet in the early church was allowed to declare what God said and what it meant without all people in the church comparing what was said to the rest of scripture. And no prophet was above the critical evaluation of the men of the church to determine if what they said was from God. g. [Slide 12] If I had to put it plainly – to prophesy is to deliver God’s Word and suggest an interpretation of it that must be evaluated. To teach and preach is to evaluate prophesy and exhort God’s people to live accordingly. h. Therefore, to teach or preach you must also prophesy, but to prophesy you need not teach or preach. i. This is what I do every week. I toss my interpretation in the hat along with interpretation from other men and sometimes women, and pray the Spirit will guide me to truth. Then I deliver it to you as what God has said and what He then requires of us. 5. So what is Paul not permitting here? 6. [Slide 13] The heart of the matter is this, God has established the male gender as the leader both in the home and in the church. 7. Therefore, there should never be a time where a woman helps to determine how our church interprets scripture. She may suggest an interpretation, but in the evaluation of all interpretations including her own, she is not permitted to assist. Furthermore, she cannot take that arrived upon interpretation and exhort the church to conform. Therefore, since teaching is arriving at an interpretational conclusion and exhorting, she cannot by definition, teach a man. 8. Nor should there ever be a time where a woman dictates what the church is to believe, how they are to practice that belief, or how they must spend money or function. Input is almost always appreciated, but domination and giving orders is not permitted. a. Kim telling me not to use the restrooms because she has just mopped the floor – does not fall into this category. It has nothing to do with faith and practice, and as long as she asks or at least tells me kindly there is nothing wrong with her saying such things. b. Joyce reminding me that people faithful to Yahweh left the Northern Kingdom for the Southern Kingdom - is not teaching. The closest we could call it would be prophesy but it is not teaching. c. But a woman telling any man here, what to preach, how they must interpret the scriptures, demanding that we should or should not obey our governing authorities, ordering the church to spend money on this or that, or otherwise attempting to dominate any man or men in the church, from husband to church leader – is not permitted. xi. Instead, women should remain quiet. She should assume the humble position of learner. She can posit questions; she can suggest interpretation. But ultimately determining the right interpretation of scripture and then applying it to God’s people is not a permitted role for her to fill within the church toward any man. Toward her children or other women? Sure. But not toward a man. xii. [Slide 14] Objections 1. What if I disagree strongly with the men’s interpretation of scripture? a. Search the scriptures and historical theology. If most have concluded the same thing your leaders have – there is a good chance you are simply wrong. b. Discuss it with your husband. Perhaps he can help you see the truth of the interpretation. c. If you are both troubled by it – let your husband accompany you to meet with the leadership to discuss the interpretation. d. Remember, if you are a member you and your husband both are to submit to your church leaders. e. If the interpretation is not something related to core doctrine, you may need to pray for unity and disagree quietly. f. If the interpretation is severe enough, you may need to find a church that conforms to your understanding of scripture. 2. My husband is a baby Christian. How can I ask him about this stuff? I clearly know more than he does. a. Whose role is it to mimic Christ, who washes you with the water of the word of God? b. Whose role is it to mimic Christ who gave His life for you? c. Whose role is it to be the head of you as Christ is the head of him and God the head of Christ? d. Ask your husband ladies. Ask him. Let him struggle to find the answer for you. In that struggle… he will grow. e. Start expecting more of him. Watch him rise to the challenge. f. Ultimately, he will answer to God for how well he has imitated Christ toward you. Let him! 3. There are no men who are gifted or willing to teach and/or lead. a. In scripture we do see a precedent set for when men were not wiling to lead, women took their place. But in the cases where this happens, we do see a deferral to men. Deborah looks to Barak to lead. And he is punished for not doing so. b. The normal expectation is for men to teach and to lead. If they refuse, they will be judged accordingly. Still, women ought not take these roles if there are men willing to fill them. Even if the men are less gifted or mature. And as soon as men desire to take that role, the women should step down. 4. I am unmarried or married to an unbeliever. a. Submit to the male leadership you have. b. A father, if you are in his home c. Even if your husband is an unbeliever you are to submit to him. It may not mean you seek him for answers to questions – but you are still told to submit to him as long as he does not tell you to do something God forbids or not to do something God commands. d. The male leadership in the church. 5. I am a gifted teacher and preacher of the word of God. a. No one is saying you aren’t. No one is saying you can’t be. b. Paul isn’t telling you that you aren’t allowed to fire a bow and arrow, merely where you cannot aim it. c. Women exercising these gifts are limited to women, children, and co-teaching with your husband. Like Pricilla and Aquila who taught Apollos. c. [Slide 15] Passage Truth: Paul forbids women from being teachers of men and exercising authority over men. Meaning that women cannot evaluate interpretations of scripture and exhort men to obey it. This is not the role God has given them within the church. d. Passage Application: Instead they ought to humbly submit to their male leaders’ authority and teaching. e. [Slide 16] Broader Biblical Truth: As we expand this to other passages, we get an even clearer picture. It is not that women can never teach, ask questions, suggest interpretive answers to biblical truth, or even have input in decisions. They simply cannot arrive at interpretive conclusions and exhort men to obey them. Instead, they must humbly submit to the order God has established within the home and the church and look to their male leadership for such things. They can and should teach children, women, and even in tandem with their husbands – but they cannot alone teach men. f. Broader Biblical Application: Therefore, women at CBC must be learners. A role granted to you by your union with Christ. A role in and of itself that was culturally challenging in the first century. Now it is culturally challenging in the other direction. Women are equal to men in substance. We are all made by God and co-dependent on one another. But God did not design each of us to do the same things, serve the same purpose, or fill the same roles. So, in our ministry, from Foundations, to Wednesday Night, to Sunday Morning – we must be sure that this is the case. Women ought to learn with a humble spirit, asking questions, even offering interpretations, but not deciding the interpretation and exhorting men to obey it. Transition: [Slide 17 (blank)] Often in scripture when God desires something to be a certain way, He does not explain Himself answering the question why. However, here, Paul does explain the reason behind the limitation God sets upon women in the church. II.) God established His order from creation, so we must not allow women to have teaching or authority roles in the church. (13-15) a. [Slide 18] 13 – For Adam was formed first and then Eve. i. Many modern interpreters of this passage of scripture attempt to explain this teaching in reference to the context of 1st century Rome. ii. But, Paul presents the reason he does not allow women to teach a man or exercise authority over a man, and it has nothing to do with the current situation in Rome. iii. Rather, it has everything to do with the order and purpose of God when He created Adam and Eve. iv. Adam was made first and then Eve. What does that mean? v. Adam was made by God FOR God. Eve was made by God FOR Adam and FOR God. vi. We saw this in I Corinthians 11. Man is the glory of God and women the glory of man. What does that mean? It means man was created for God and women for man. We aren’t talking about worship- rather – creative purpose. vii. Eve was made to be a support, a helper, a corresponding component. A complementary work. Adam is where God started and Eve is where God finished. And both make the image of God. viii. So, we are equal in the sense that both man and woman are made in the image of God. ix. But we do not have equity meaning that we are offered the exact same opportunities, or given the same purpose. x. There is a further layer to this onion besides our creation… and it is the nature of the fall. b. [Slide 19] 14 – And Adam was not deceived, but the woman, because she was fully deceived, fell into transgression. i. [Slide 20] Paul is referencing the real plight of the garden temptation and sin. ii. Adam was not deceived. He knew exactly what he was getting himself into when he bit the fruit. iii. And Eve was fully and completely sold a bill of goods. iv. What is Paul talking about? v. [Slide 21] Look at Genesis 3: 1-7 1. First, we have an outside source inserting itself between Adam and Eve. 2. We have no record of God telling Eve not to eat of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden. However, here we see that she has received that instruction. 3. Most likely her husband taught her the commands of God. 4. Here she adds to those commands, but it is unclear as to whether that addition is Adam’s or Eve’s. 5. Regardless, the outside party, Satan as revealed later in the New Testament, continues to undermine the teaching of both God and Adam her husband. 6. She believed his lie and was then deceived 7. And gave it to Adam to eat – and notice – he was with her. And he ate. 8. Adam wasn’t deceived. He watched all this happen. 9. Eve did not stop to consult Adam. She did not remain silent and ask him in their home. She took and ate. 10. And Adam did not correct her… instead, he followed her into sin, knowing exactly what he was doing. vi. What does this mean? Eve was the helper, yet she believed the counsel of a spiritual being and her own flesh over the counsel of her husband. She did not seek his understanding on the matter, but rather went with her own understanding. And Adam was the leader – yet he played the coward. He knowingly followed his wife into sin. vii. [Slide 22] Look at Genesis 3:16-19 1. She is cursed with labor pains in giving birth. Keep that in the back of your mind for now. 2. You will want to control your husband but he will dominate you. 3. So, God predicts the power struggle between man and woman for dominance… This is part of the curse… why? Because no such struggle existed before this. Because they were truly equitable? NO! Because they were without sin… and Eve submitted to her husband. 4. God predicts the woman having great difficulty submitting to her husband from now on. Even though that was the way it had been from the beginning. 5. But look at Adam… 6. Because you obeyed your wife… and allowed her to dominate you. 7. Even though you knew what I said 8. Because you listened to her and not to me… Adam had made Eve an idol. He obeyed her. Even though she was absolutely wrong and he knew it! 9. And for it – he inherited hard work and physical death – let alone the spiritual death that fell on all humanity. viii. [Slide 23] So, why is a woman not allowed to teach and exercise authority over a man? Because the kingdom of God is coming… indeed it is here. We are returning to what God had planned from the beginning. Indeed, we are returning to the garden state so that we may enter a “better than the garden” state when Christ returns. ix. Why did Paul have to disallow women to teach and exercise authority over men? Because the hearts of women are now disinclined to submit to and accept male authority. x. The reason Paul HAS to order this, is because sin has clouded our minds on this issue. xi. Indeed, it continues to do so. xii. But… there is hope! c. [Slide 24] 15 – But she will be delivered through childbearing, i. Wow – ok so this is one of the trickiest things to interpret in this already difficult passage. ii. What does it mean that she will be saved or delivered through childbearing? iii. There are no less than 5 different ways to interpret this. To save time, I will only mention the 3 most popular – one of which I will refute and the other two I will cautiously choose between. 1. [Slide 25] That Eve would be saved through her child descendant Jesus. This is a very attractive option, fits the context, and is theologically sound. However, there are some fairly large grammatical problems with interpreting this in this way. a. The future tense of will be saved to refer to a woman who is dead, a child that has already come and accomplished such saving, is at best grammatically awkward if not outright wrong. She has been saved, maybe, but not will be saved. There is no future aspect to Eve’s salvation in her descendant line. b. Why is only Eve, or women in general singled out for this? Are not all who are saved, saved by Christ? c. This would be remarkably subtle. So subtle that it borders on eisegesis rather than sound exegesis. It feels more like something someone is reading in rather than pulling out of the text. d. The term “childbearing” can refer to the act of giving birth or perhaps even as the act of rearing a child – but it would be quite the stretch for it to refer to the product of giving birth – i.e. the baby – much less a distant descendant of that birth. e. So while this seems to be an attractive option – it fails in several ways to come from the text itself. 2. Perhaps this is another role definition for women. Although they naturally desire to have those teaching and leading positions, it is through childbearing- and in this we’d say it is metaphor for child rearing – that the woman finds her role. Not battling over the man’s position but taking her rightful place as the former and shaper of her children. Thus, being a good mother is an evidence, not THE evidence, but an evidence of being truly converted. This used to be my favorite position on the matter, however, Paul elsewhere assigns the nurture and admonition of the children to the Father. Thus, it is at least not solely the job or responsibility of the women to rear her children. In that case then, I don’t see this as a great explanation for all the details in the text. 3. The interpretation I favor is that Paul is continuing to allude to the creation and fall of mankind. Thus, he is still speaking with reference to the curse. Indeed, the context accommodates both the power struggle between men and women, and even the post resurrection status of the church and the lack of needing to marry or bear children. By saying that women will be saved through childbearing… Paul then could be suggesting that when this life is over, the curse of sin, in all its facets will be erased. The word “through” here would not refer to a means or instrument, not the way women are delivered but rather what they must get through safely to the other side. In other words, women endure the effects of the curse for this life and this life only. The pain of childbearing, and the power struggle will all be over one day. 4. There are conditions on this though. How can women truly be saved through this? d. [Slide 26] If she continues in faith and love and holiness with self-control. i. If a woman shows faith, love, holiness, and self-control these are evidences of a woman changed by grace. ii. Only these kinds of women will be delivered from their fallen condition and all that that entails. iii. The resurrection has not yet happened. They are not in the final state where all is right. iv. And the evidence for that is that the effects of the curse remain. However, women who are changed by grace, will be delivered through the curse to the Kingdom of God. v. And in this way – they are exactly like men. For men too will be delivered through the curse of sin by grace. e. [Slide 27] Passage Truth: Paul teaches Timothy that the reason he is not permitting that women cannot be teachers of men or exercise authority over men is because of the creative purpose of God and the nature of the fall. f. Passage Application: Instead women ought to humbly submit to their male leaders’ authority and teaching, and endure in the evidences of grace until they are delivered. g. [Slide 28] Broader Biblical Truth: This text uniquely has already looked at the breadth of scripture beginning with the creative orders and decrees and ending with the kingdom of God and freedom from the curse of sin. h. Broader Biblical Application: And so here at CBC we cannot have women teach men or show authority over men, simply because it is not God’s creative purpose for them. But with men, women too will be saved by grace from the effects of the fall. They too are fellow heirs of the grace of life. Therefore, they are not less than men, they are simply given different roles and responsibilities. Conclusion: [Slide 29(end)] We have already applied this text as we went. So, I’ll not take a large amount of time here at the end to wrap up. What I will say is this… God’s Word is our source for truth. So no matter how much our culture balks at this concept we must get it into our heads. God’s design in creation for each gender is not the same. But we must remember what we learned at the beginning of this chapter. God’s elect are chosen from all kinds of people. And yes… that includes women. A lot of women. And women are saved the same way that men are. They are brought to life by grace, given repentance and faith, and grown through the grace which proceeds from Christ through His Spirit which lives in them, empowering and motivating them to do as God has commanded. Women are not less than men. But they are not the same as men either. Male leadership is established in the home and in the church from creation. But one day we all will be delivered through the curse of sin safely to the eternal Kingdom where we are all united to and in Christ. Until then, may we model the creative order of God. May we each fill the appropriate roles God has for us, and may we do so meeting His expectations of those roles.
