Determined not to go down with the ship, Michael tapped into his networking skills and began exploring online business. La reciente suspensión de la que sería la X Cumbre de las Américas, programada originalmente del 1 al 5 de diciembre de 2025 en Punta Cana, República Dominicana, marca un giro inédito en la historia de este foro hemisférico de jefes de Estado. Las autoridades dominicanas, en consulta con la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) y con el respaldo declarado de Estados Unidos, explicaron que la decisión se basó en “profundas divergencias políticas” en el continente y las dificultades para garantizar un diálogo productivo bajo el actual contexto geopolítico. Una suspensión que no ocurre desde la primera Cumbre realizada en Miami en 1994.El aplazamiento de este evento hasta el 2026, revela la magnitud de las fracturas políticas que atraviesan el hemisferio. Para algunos analistas, hay muchas razones para el desencuentro: desde la exclusión de regímenes autoritarios, hasta la poca capacidad de articulación regional, así como las preocupaciones que produce el despliegue militar estadounidense en el Caribe. Todo lo cual limita las posibilidades de alcanzar algún entendimiento y mucho menos un acuerdo ante una agenda común tan compleja y desafiante.Y es que la Cumbre de las Américas desde sus orígenes ha sido concebida como el espacio para articular cooperación política, económica y social hemisférica, su diferimiento nos habla de un retroceso en la confianza para articular posiciones comunes frente a desafíos compartidos: migración, crimen organizado, cambio climático o subdesarrollo. En ese sentido, la región se encuentra ante la falta de un foro multilateral que permita amainar la polarización y renovar la institucionalidad internacional, ante una región que demanda respuestas conjuntas.En este escenario de desconexión, en el que el multilateralismo vive sus horas más amargas cabrían varias preguntas: ¿cuál será el futuro de la política si ante la disparidad de puntos de vista la respuesta es la suspensión de este tipo de eventos? ¿Podemos avanzar en una agenda común solo si existe sintonía ideológica? On a quiet afternoon in Punta Cana, Michael Levine sat alone on a stretch of white sand. The turquoise water and silence offered the perfect scene for rest—until he realized what was missing. “I didn't have my phone and I didn't have my laptop,” he tells us. “That's what makes me happy… I love doing work from the beach.” It was there, after stepping down as Payoneer's CFO, that Levine accepted a truth about himself: he wasn't ready to retire.Levine had spent 11 and a half years helping Payoneer scale from about 100 employees to 3,000 and from $150 million to more than $80 billion in annual volume. He guided the company from private to public in June 2021 and from unregulated to regulated operations. When he left in 2023, he planned a pause but instead found himself drawn to a new frontier.Calls from crypto companies arrived during what he calls the “crypto winter.” Although he had once avoided digital assets entirely, he became fascinated by “decentralized finance,” “smart contracts,” and the tokenization of real-world assets. A meeting arranged by Spencer Stuart with the CEO of Fireblocks solidified his next move. “When you don't know which horse to pick in a race,” Levine tells us, “buy the racetrack.”Fireblocks, he explains, is the infrastructure that secures digital assets for enterprises through self-custody and cyber-grade protection. For Levine, it was a chance to apply a career's worth of scaling and governance experience to a technology poised to define the next decade of finance.
