Espero que disfrutando de las vacaciones o, al menos, del verano, si es que ya has dejado atrás tus días de descanso. En mi caso, sigo pasando el verano en Luxemburgo con mi mujer. Y como ella está trabajando, pues yo también. Todavía no me he tomado ni un solo día de vacaciones en mi trabajo. Lo haré cuando pueda irme a algún sitio con mi mujer, y todavía no sabemos si su empresa le concederá algunos días libres en los próximos meses. Pero bueno, no pasa nada. Aquí tampoco se está mal, sobre todo ahora que la ciudad está casi vacía. Por cierto, hace poco más de un mes se cumplieron 27 años de nuestro matrimonio. Fue en el mes de julio de 1999. Y todavía seguimos juntos, algo que cada vez es menos habitual, porque ahora las parejas se separan o se divorcian con mucha frecuencia. Y de eso vamos a hablar en este episodio, de divorcios, pero antes me gustaría detenerme un momento en algo más básico: las distintas formas de matrimonio que existen en España. Porque cuando pensamos en casarnos, muchas veces imaginamos una ceremonia religiosa en una iglesia. Sin embargo, la realidad es que hoy existen varias opciones y que las costumbres han cambiado mucho durante las últimas décadas. La primera gran diferencia es la que existe entre el matrimonio civil y el matrimonio religioso. El matrimonio civil es el que se celebra ante una autoridad del Estado, como un juez, un alcalde o un funcionario autorizado. Actualmente es la opción más frecuente en España. Muchas parejas prefieren una ceremonia sencilla en el ayuntamiento o en otro lugar preparado para este tipo de celebraciones. Por otro lado, está el matrimonio religioso. El más común es el matrimonio católico, aunque también pueden celebrarse matrimonios de otras confesiones religiosas. En este caso, además de la dimensión legal, la ceremonia tiene un significado religioso para la pareja. Pero hay otro aspecto interesante. En España también pueden casarse personas del mismo sexo. Desde el año 2005, el matrimonio igualitario es legal, lo que convirtió a España en uno de los primeros países del mundo en reconocer este derecho. Además, no todas las parejas deciden casarse. En los últimos años ha aumentado mucho el número de personas que viven juntas sin pasar por el matrimonio. En España se utiliza con frecuencia la expresión "pareja de hecho” para referirse a dos personas que mantienen una relación estable y conviven sin estar casadas. Dependiendo de la comunidad autónoma, estas parejas pueden tener algunos derechos similares a los de los matrimonios. Y si observamos cómo han cambiado las cosas con el paso del tiempo, veremos una transformación enorme. Hace apenas unas décadas, casarse era considerado casi una obligación social para muchas personas. Hoy, en cambio, el matrimonio es una opción más entre varias posibilidades para organizar la vida en pareja. Precisamente por eso resultan tan interesantes los datos que vamos a comentar hoy. Porque no solo nos hablan de divorcios, sino también de cómo han evolucionado las relaciones de pareja y la sociedad española en general. Como siempre, la noticia pertenece a Radio Nacional de España. La escuchamos ya. “Y en España nos divorciamos menos. Esto es estadística pura, menos divorcios. Y la mayoría son amistosos, además, pero en todo caso, ¿nos divorciamos menos porque nos llevábamos mejor o porque al final divorciarse cuesta dinero? El año pasado hubo 80.785 divorcios, un 2,7% menos que en el año anterior. También se produjeron 2.872 separaciones, que han descendido un 20,3%, y 27 nulidades. ¿Los motivos? También existía antes cierta presión social y el divorcio estaba muy mal visto. Y eso por suerte ha cambiado, ha evolucionado y la gente siente que ya no tiene por qué conformarse con cualquier cosa. Una de las cosas fundamentales es el estrés en el que vivimos, que nos hace estar muy tensos y otra, que cada vez tenemos menos paciencia para todo. Los matrimonios disueltos por divorcio tuvieron una duración media de 16,2 años, similar a la del año anterior. El 31% se produjeron después de 20 años de matrimonio o más. Y la edad media de las mujeres fue de 46,6 años y en los hombres de 49,1. Otro dato llamativo, Lalo, de esta encuesta es que, según el INE, la custodia compartida fue otorgada en el 50,8% de los casos de divorcio de parejas con hijos.” Por cierto, antes no te lo he dicho, pero el INE es el Instituto Nacional de Estadística, el organismo público español encargado de recopilar y publicar datos estadísticos sobre población, economía, sociedad y otros cosas de ese tipo. Y una vez aclaradas las siglas INE, vamos con las palabras o expresiones más interesantes. Las dos primeras no aparecen en la noticia, pero tiene sentido explicarlas para entender la tercera. Llevarse bien: Tener una relación positiva con otra persona. -Aunque trabajan en departamentos diferentes, se llevan muy bien y suelen comer juntos. -Mis vecinos se llevan bien desde hace años y siempre se ayudan cuando surge algún problema. Llevarse mal: Tener una relación conflictiva o poco amistosa con otra persona. -Los dos compañeros se llevan mal porque tienen formas de trabajar muy distintas. -De pequeños nos llevábamos mal, pero ahora tenemos una relación excelente. Llevarse mejor: Tener una relación más positiva que antes. -Desde que empezaron a hablar más, los dos hermanos se llevan mejor. -Antes discutíamos mucho, pero ahora nos llevamos mucho mejor. Nulidad: Decisión legal que establece que un acto o un contrato no tiene validez. Significa que el matrimonio se considera inválido desde su origen. -El juez declaró la nulidad del contrato porque una de las partes había sido engañada. -La empresa solicitó la nulidad del acuerdo firmado años atrás. Estar mal visto: No ser aceptado socialmente o ser considerado inapropiado por muchas personas. -En algunas empresas está mal visto llegar tarde de forma habitual. -Hace décadas estaba mal visto que los hombres expresaran sus emociones en público. Conformarse: Aceptar una situación o un resultado sin intentar mejorarlo, aunque no sea exactamente lo que se desea. -No quiero conformarme con un nivel básico de español; quiero llegar a hablar con fluidez. -Después de buscar durante meses, decidió conformarse con un apartamento más pequeño. Estar tenso: Estar nervioso, preocupado o bajo presión, tanto física como emocionalmente. -Antes de la entrevista de trabajo estaba muy tenso y apenas podía concentrarme. -El ambiente en la oficina estaba tenso después del anuncio de los despidos. Matrimonio disuelto: Matrimonio que ha terminado legalmente, generalmente mediante divorcio. -Tras varios años de conflictos, el matrimonio quedó disuelto por decisión judicial. -Una vez disuelto el matrimonio, ambos comenzaron vidas separadas. Custodia compartida: Sistema por el que ambos padres comparten la responsabilidad y el cuidado de sus hijos después de una separación o divorcio. -Gracias a la custodia compartida, los niños pasan tiempo equilibrado con su madre y con su padre. -La pareja acordó una custodia compartida para que ambos participaran en la educación de sus hijos. Otorgar: Conceder, dar o reconocer oficialmente algo a una persona. -La universidad le otorgó una beca por sus excelentes resultados académicos. -El ayuntamiento otorgó un premio a los vecinos que participaron en el proyecto solidario. “Y en España nos divorciamos menos. Bien, pues antes de contarte la noticia con otras palabras, se me olvidó decirte que el presentador del informativo se llama “Lalo”. Por eso el periodista dice ese nombre casi al final. Bueno. Resulta que en España cada vez hay menos personas que deciden poner fin a su matrimonio. Los datos más recientes muestran que el número de divorcios bajó ligeramente el año pasado. Además, muchas de esas rupturas se producen de manera bastante tranquila, porque las dos personas llegan a acuerdos sin grandes enfrentamientos. Ahora bien, hay una pregunta que se hacen algunos expertos. ¿Las parejas duran más porque su relación funciona mejor que antes o porque separarse supone un gasto importante y no todo el mundo puede permitírselo? Las estadísticas indican que durante el año pasado hubo algo más de ochenta mil divorcios, una cifra un poco inferior a la del año anterior. También disminuyó de forma muy notable el número de separaciones legales, mientras que los casos de nulidad matrimonial siguieron siendo muy poco frecuentes. Según la gente de la calle, una de las razones por las que han cambiado las cifras tiene que ver con la evolución de la sociedad. Hace algunas décadas, terminar un matrimonio era algo que muchas personas consideraban inaceptable. Había quienes seguían juntos simplemente por miedo a la opinión de los demás. Hoy, en cambio, mucha gente piensa que no merece la pena continuar en una relación que no le hace feliz. Sin embargo, la gente preguntada por la calle también señala algunos problemas de la vida moderna. Vivimos con muchas preocupaciones, tenemos poco tiempo para descansar y a menudo soportamos niveles elevados de tensión. Además, parece que cada vez toleramos peor las dificultades y nos cuesta más ser pacientes cuando aparecen los problemas. Otro dato interesante es que las parejas que se divorciaron llevaban casadas, de media, algo más de dieciséis años. De hecho, casi un tercio de las rupturas correspondió a matrimonios que habían durado más de veinte años, lo que demuestra que no todos los divorcios se producen en los primeros años de convivencia. En cuanto a la edad, las mujeres tenían de media unos cuarenta y siete años cuando se divorciaron, mientras que los hombres rondaban los cuarenta y nueve. Y para terminar, hay una cifra que llama bastante la atención. En los divorcios de parejas con hijos, más de la mitad de los casos terminaron con una custodia compartida. Es decir, tanto el padre como la madre continúan responsabilizándose del cuidado y la educación de sus hijos después de la ruptura. Muy bien. Si viajáramos en el tiempo y regresáramos a los años setenta o incluso a los años ochenta, descubriríamos una sociedad muy diferente a la actual. En aquella época, el divorcio era mucho menos frecuente. De hecho, durante gran parte del siglo XX ni siquiera era legal en España. Y cuando finalmente se aprobó la ley del divorcio, muchas personas seguían viendo con malos ojos a quienes decidían poner fin a su matrimonio. ¿Por qué ocurría esto? Bueno, una de las razones principales era la influencia de la religión y de las costumbres tradicionales. Existía la idea de que el matrimonio debía durar toda la vida, independientemente de si la relación funcionaba bien o mal. Además, la opinión de la familia, de los vecinos o incluso de los compañeros de trabajo tenía mucho peso. Muchas personas permanecían juntas porque sentían una enorme presión social. También había otro factor importante. Hace décadas, muchas mujeres dependían económicamente de sus maridos. Eso hacía mucho más difícil plantearse una separación. Hoy la situación es diferente. La incorporación masiva de las mujeres al mercado laboral ha aumentado su independencia económica y les ha permitido tomar decisiones que antes resultaban mucho más complicadas. Por otro lado, también ha cambiado nuestra forma de entender la felicidad y las relaciones de pareja. Antes era más habitual pensar que había que aguantar los problemas a toda costa. En la actualidad, muchas personas consideran que el bienestar emocional es una prioridad y creen que no tiene sentido mantener una relación que genera sufrimiento constante. Sin embargo, el cambio no se explica solo por una mayor libertad para divorciarse. Los expertos también señalan que las relaciones modernas se enfrentan a desafíos que apenas existían hace unas décadas. Vivimos más deprisa, tenemos horarios más complicados, pasamos muchas horas trabajando y, además, estamos permanentemente conectados a través de los teléfonos móviles y las redes sociales. Todo eso puede generar más estrés y menos tiempo de calidad para compartir con la pareja. Así que, cuando observamos las estadísticas de divorcio, en realidad estamos viendo algo más que números. Estamos viendo la evolución de la sociedad española, de sus valores, de sus costumbres y de la manera en que las personas entienden el amor, la familia y la vida en pareja. We look back at our conversation with Chef Josa Lalo Camarena - now at the Malarkey, when he was at República.   Original post from February 2025. This is a must-listen.  Chef Jose Camarena, Executive Chef at Portland's highly regarded República, may just be the youngest guest of over 400 on our podcast.  But you wouldn't know it if we hadn't drawn attention to that fact.  At just 24, he's in a position few others are at his age, and it's easy to see how he got as far as he's gotten at such a young age. We talk about his family Sunday dinners, how he became interested in the food industry and how his family lineage of hard work in horse grooming instilled in him the grit to work hard to reach success in a tough industry  We cover some of the places he's worked, who Lalo's Portland mentors have been, including chef Lauro Romero, who passed away two years ago, leaving a huge hole in many hearts. The series completes itself with a look at the grandaddy of them all, Shaun Monson's 'Earthlings'. Although food has been the main focus of the series, this documentary also looks at the use of animals as pets (even that isn't always pretty), for clothes, for entertainment and finally for scientific experiments. Shaun's 2015 sequel 'Unity' is in the show notes below.   Antony also mentions a couple of Australian documentaries that are even harder to watch than 'Earthlings' (if that's even possible), and offers some final statements and some attempt at a conclusion.   General series notes We all know it's happening. We all know it's horrific but try to tell ourselves it's not that bad and if we just buy free-range eggs we can square it with our conscience and sleep peacefully. However, research and just a small sample of the copious amounts of truly heartbreaking video footage available makes it clear that it is far, far worse than we think (note- the information in this podcast series is actually quite sanitised compared to other testimonies and footage out there).   Who is to blame? The consumer or the industry? It seems to be a chicken-and-egg situation that could be improved greatly by the average consumer deciding to invest time in discovering what is behind some of the shameful (and shameless) propaganda techniques employed by the food industry. As should be clear in the series, the animals are the biggest victims but not the only ones, which is obvious when you research the state of meat, eggs and dairy that is routinely passed as 'safe to consume'.   To gain a better industry of how and why this nasty business is allowed to happen, a recommended companion piece is the excellent documentary 'The Corporation' and indeed the previous LALO episode on it (see show notes for both). We really owe it to ourselves and the animals who largely live miserable, hellish lives before suffering painful and brutal deaths, to make the effort in the ultimate information age to inform ourselves of the real situation. Unfettered capitalism cannot be allowed to run riot without resistance.   Do I recommend watching the documentaries and other video footage available? I'm going to say yes but please proceed with caution and I would actively discourage viewing them if you feel in a vulnerable or depressive state because they have the power to make you question whether true humanity exists and how we can possibly behave in this kind of way to innocent, defenceless beings (once again, I would also include some humans in this).   As the saying goes, 'once you've seen it, you can't unsee it', and as Ed Winters aka Earthling Ed says at the end of 'Land of Hope And Glory', 'you can never again say you didn't know'. Allons, enfants de la patrie! Let's celeberate Bastille Day in style! And what better exemplar of the power and élan of French music than the great Gabriel Bacquier?! It was only about a year ago that I published an episode featuring Bacquier singing art song. Today's episode combines Bacquier in his more familiar guise as an opera singer, with further (and even rarer) recordings of him singing mélodies. About a year ago I coughed up a lot of dough for a super-expensive and super-rare 2-LP set entitled Panorama de la Mélodie française in which Bacquier shared the vocal honors with a French coloratura soprano who is virtually forgotten today. Today we hear his contribution to that rare 1964 release featuring songs by the usual suspects: Fauré, Debussy, Duparc, and Hahn, alongside some less-familiar repertoire by Saint-Saëns, Massenet, and Lalo. It came out to not quite enough music for a full episode, so I have supplemented it with excerpts from a great, but nearly forgotten, triumph of Bacquier's: his assumption of the title role of French composer Daniel-Lesur's 1968 opera, Andrea del Sarto. (Astute listeners will remember that last week I played Alain Vanzo singing a selection from this same piece.) In addition, I offer selections from two different 1963 aria recitals by Bacquier, one in Italian, the other in French. This assortment of material reasserts Bacquier's versatility, his solid technique, even the beauty of his voice at that point in his career. As his voice aged, Bacquier gradually assumed more bass roles and character parts but throughout the 1960s, his voice retained its youthful beauty even as his characterizations gained in precision and power. Along with a handful of other French singers during that era, Bacquier was the greatest of the great. I return to Countermelody‘s Salut à la France miniseries with a tribute to the Monaco-born French-naturalized tenor, Alain Vanzo (1923-2002). Continuing with this most upsetting but vitally important topic, Antony completes his look at 'Land of Hope And Glory', discusses the big myth about tradition and change and then switches to a new documentary called 'The Dying Trade'.   This film was made by Jack Hancock, who gives the issue a new spin by exploring his relationship with his father, who just happens to be a man-and-boy slaughterhouse worker (Antony avoids euphemistic words like 'abattoir' throughout this series). Along the way, Jack meets a Holocaust survivor and such legends as Temple Grandin and Gail Eisnitz.   As Upton Sinclair famously said, 'it's difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on him not understanding it'.    This second part ends with testimonies from some rather brave slaughterhouse workers, who are largely victims themselves working in a stressful and terrifying environment which is, as Shaun Monson puts it, 'both a kitchen and a toilet'.   General series notes We all know it's happening. We all know it's horrific but try to tell ourselves it's not that bad and if we just buy free-range eggs we can square it with our conscience and sleep peacefully. However, research and just a small sample of the copious amounts of truly heartbreaking video footage available makes it clear that it is far, far worse than we think (note- the information in this podcast series is actually quite sanitised compared to other testimonies and footage out there).   Who is to blame? The consumer or the industry? It seems to be a chicken-and-egg situation that could be improved greatly by the average consumer deciding to invest time in discovering what is behind some of the shameful (and shameless) propaganda techniques employed by the food industry. As should be clear in the series, the animals are the biggest victims but not the only ones, which is obvious when you research the state of meat, eggs and dairy that is routinely passed as 'safe to consume'.   To gain a better industry of how and why this nasty business is allowed to happen, a recommended companion piece is the excellent documentary 'The Corporation' and indeed the previous LALO episode on it (see show notes for both). We really owe it to ourselves and the animals who largely live miserable, hellish lives before suffering painful and brutal deaths, to make the effort in the ultimate information age to inform ourselves of the real situation. Unfettered capitalism cannot be allowed to run riot without resistance.   Do I recommend watching the documentaries and other video footage available? I'm going to say yes but please proceed with caution and I would actively discourage viewing them if you feel in a vulnerable or depressive state because they have the power to make you question whether true humanity exists and how we can possibly behave in this kind of way to innocent, defenceless beings (once again, I would also include some humans in this).   As the saying goes, 'once you've seen it, you can't unsee it', and as Ed Winters aka Earthling Ed says at the end of 'Land of Hope And Glory', 'you can never again say you didn't know'. There's no doubt that the research, including lots of video footage, has been the most upsetting and harrowing, but there has been a strangely cathartic quality to it as well.   In this part, Antony talks about his relationship with animals, the video that was the final trigger (or final straw) for these episodes, and then begins to go through the content of the film 'Land of Hope and Glory'. This documentary is known as a UK version of the well-known animal rights/use & abuse film 'Earthlings', which will be covered later in the series.   General series notes We all know it's happening. We all know it's horrific but try to tell ourselves it's not that bad and if we just buy free-range eggs we can square it with our conscience and sleep peacefully. However, research and just a small sample of the copious amounts of truly heartbreaking video footage available makes it clear that it is far, far worse than we think (note- the information in this podcast series is actually quite sanitised compared to other testimonies and footage out there).   Who is to blame? The consumer or the industry? It seems to be a chicken-and-egg situation that could be improved greatly by the average consumer deciding to invest time in discovering what is behind some of the shameful (and shameless) propaganda techniques employed by the food industry. As should be clear in the series, the animals are the biggest victims but not the only ones, which is obvious when you research the state of meat, eggs and dairy that is routinely passed as 'safe to consume'.   To gain a better industry of how and why this nasty business is allowed to happen, a recommended companion piece is the excellent documentary 'The Corporation' and indeed the previous LALO episode on it (see show notes for both). We really owe it to ourselves and the animals who largely live miserable, hellish lives before suffering painful and brutal deaths, to make the effort in the ultimate information age to inform ourselves of the real situation. Unfettered capitalism cannot be allowed to run riot without resistance.   Do I recommend watching the documentaries and other video footage available? I'm going to say yes but please proceed with caution and I would actively discourage viewing them if you feel in a vulnerable or depressive state because they have the power to make you question whether true humanity exists and how we can possibly behave in this kind of way to innocent, defenceless beings (once again, I would also include some humans in this).   As the saying goes, 'once you've seen it, you can't unsee it', and as Ed Winters aka Earthling Ed says at the end of 'Land of Hope And Glory', 'you can never again say you didn't know'. 1) Montaña: Hace unos años tuve un gran amigo que se llamaba Lalo. Lalo es un tipo que siempre cae bien, con una sonrisa siempre en la boca, siempre simpático y con algún chiste por contar. Creo que ninguna fiesta o asado es lo mismo con él que sin él. Contaba sus historias y nos descostillábamos de la risa, era una máquina de hacer chistes. Es de esas personas que en primera instancia las necesitamos siempre, pero nunca imaginé el infierno que vivía. Comprendí con el tiempo que Lalo cada mañana hace un esfuerzo sobrehumano para salir de la cama, le cuesta un horror tener que vivir un día más. Por fuera, a la vista de todos, parece un tipo feliz y superado con las cosas que le tocó vivir, pero en su interior se siente desesperanzado, agotado y hasta dolido. Asustado y solo, me animo a decirte que sufre de una depresión crónica que lo paraliza y le va cortando ese espíritu alegre en cuotas, mientras pasa el tiempo, pero, no hay prótesis para un espíritu amputado. El famoso Robbie Williams, antes de quitarse la vida, puso la frase “ Todo lo que se necesita para esconder un alma herida, es una sonrisa falsa, y nunca se darán cuenta de lo lastimado que estás”. Él también dijo en otra ocasión: “Pensé que lo peor en la vida era terminar solo, y no lo era, lo peor en la vida es terminar con gente que te hace sentir solo”. También, como mi amigo Lalo, vivía un infierno, por eso para sanar hay que ver el todo.2) Leproso: Hay gente que tiene la lepra de vivir aparentando y buscando agradar, pero vos no sos como los demás. Por eso ponete las pilas, amigo, amiga. Pasas el día intentando parecerte a ellos, y eso es agotador. Hay veces que uno se hace el interesante, pero, más que interesante, uno parece perdido. Eso ocurre cuando uno pasa demasiado tiempo mirando a los demás y muy poco tiempo mirándose a sí mismo. Esa es la lepra que te quita lo hermoso del rostro de tu vida. Hay veces que empiezas a construirte, en vez de descubrirte. Aprendí en estos años que no tengo que querer ser el mejor, tengo que aprender a ser único. Dios y yo creemos en ti. 3) Digas: Una vez me tocó predicar a sacerdotes. Era lo más duro para mí, porque son gente sabia y medio que “difícil de entrar”. Entonces, mi guía espiritual, me contó una historia: Había una vez un hombre muy inteligente. Había estudiado muchísimo, se había formado con los mejores, había leído millones de libros, sabía muchos idiomas y hasta se licenció en Biblia. Él sabía que era muy inteligente. Un día decidió ir a visitar a un sabio del cual muchas personas hablaban. Llegó a la casa, era muy simple, no había libros a la vista, el sabio lo invitó a pasar y le empezó a servir té. El hombre se sentó y aceptó el té, mientras le contaba al sabio todo lo que él sabía, con quién había estudiado, todo lo que había leído. El sabio mientras servía la taza de té lo escuchaba, pero algo pasó… el té rebasó la taza y empezó a caer todo el té al piso y ensució todo.  Greg Davidson is the Co-Founder and CEO of Lalo, a modern baby and toddler brand built around the idea that new parents deserve better: better design, better guidance, and products that actually grow with their kids. Greg's path to founding a baby brand is not what you'd expect. Trudy breaks down why companies should not simply default to familiar terms like FOB or Ex Works, especially when containerized freight, export filing, loading responsibility, and risk exposure are involved. Key Takeaways Incoterms are voluntary, but they help buyers and sellers clearly define responsibility. There are 11 Incoterms, but most companies should focus primarily on the 7 “any mode” terms. FOB, CIF, CFR, and FAS are often misused when goods are moving in containers. “Ocean shipment” does not automatically mean one of the ocean-only terms applies. Ex Works may look simple for the seller, but it can create serious compliance and operational risk. Export filing, proof of export, loading responsibility, and product destination still matter. AI and automation can help, but trade professionals still need the foundation to validate results. Retired agent Ed Mireles reviews several true stories from his 15-plus years of undercover work using the alias Lalo. He recounts his assignments posing as a notorious drug trafficker, transporter, and money launderer in Miami, El Paso, Tucson, and other areas along the Southwest border between Mexico and the United States. Ed, aka Lalo, managed several warehouses in Miami, Florida, and he expanded to operate a transportation business and later a trucking company. The quantity of drugs he reportedly moved made him highly sought-after by the cartels and law enforcement. Tony Katz and Fingers Malloy step away from bourbon for a rare tequila-focused Happy Hour, pouring LALO Tequila Blanco and finding a surprisingly smooth, easy-sipping pour with notes of agave, citrus, tropical fruit, and a little creaminess on the palate. Today's featured artist is, I hope, a name that some of you will at least have heard of: the French mezzo-soprano Germaine Cernay, born Germaine Pointu in Le Havre in 1900 and dying tragically young of an epileptic event in war-torn Paris at the age of only 43. Here is an artist who strikes a balance between poise and white heat, with a voice of exquisite timbre anchored by a flawless technique. Between making her debut at the Opéra-Comique in 1927 and her early retirement from her singing career the year before her death with the intention of becoming a nun, Cernay was a prodigious recording artist and a habituée of both the operatic stage and the concert platform. Today's episode presents her in her core operatic repertoire (Debussy, Fauré, Mascagni, Bizet, Thomas, and Saint-Saëns), with a strong emphasis on the works of Jules Massenet (Werther, Don Quichotte, Thérèse, Le Cid, Hérodiade, Sapho). Cernay is also heard at the outer edges of the mélodie repertoire, singing songs by Charles Bordes, Xavier Leroux, and Georges Dandelot, alongside the more familiar Lalo, Chabrier, and Brahms, not to forget a smattering of operetta. Some of her strongest recordings feature stellar contributions by fellow singers Georges Thill, Arthur Endrèze, André d'Arkor, Roger Bourdin, and Charles Friant.
