In this episode of the Mutuality Matters podcast from CBE International, hosts Mimi and Charel speak with Dr. Jeannine Brown who discusses the pressing need to interpret the Biblical text of 1 Peter 3:1–7 within its first-century Greco-Roman context. Dr. Brown emphasizes the importance of understanding the cultural and historical background behind the passages on submission, particularly 1 Peter 3:1–7. She explores how Peter's household codes provide agency to often marginalized groups like wives and slaves, contrary to the hierarchical norms of the time. The conversation underscores the relevance today of recognizing and respecting context while interpreting Biblical texts—an essential factor for both scholars and modern readers.    00:00 Introduction to Mutuality Matters  00:02 Exploring the Context of Submission in 1 Peter  00:49 Welcome and Introductions  01:33 Reading and Analyzing 1 Peter 3:1-7  02:57 Cultural Background and Interpretation  03:37 Household Codes in the Greco-Roman World  07:24 Missional Moments and Divided Households  08:20 Challenges for Christian Wives in the First Century  10:03 Slavery and Moral Agency in 1 Peter  11:28 Understanding Peter's Use of Household Codes  16:50 Modern Interpretations and Misconceptions  27:46 The Role of Headings in Biblical Interpretation  30:15 Instructions for Husbands in 1 Peter 3:7  36:30 Exploring Social and Physical Vulnerability  37:19 Interpreting 'Weaker Vessel' in Context  38:02 Challenging Traditional Views on Gender Roles  40:18 Co-Heirs and Inheritance in Early Christianity  41:50 Family Metaphors in 1 Peter  43:37 Egalitarian Impulses in the New Testament  45:28 Household Codes and Their Implications  50:08 Suffering for Good and Loyalty to Jesus  52:47 Translation Challenges and Responsibilities  58:01 Applying 1 Peter in Modern Contexts  01:04:03 Conclusion and Further Resources    Guest Bio: Dr. Jeannine Brown   Jeannine Brown is professor of New Testament at Bethel Seminary and Program Director of Bethel Seminary's Online programs. She is married to Tim Brown, singer-songwriter, and has two adult daughters.  Story Notes  Today's podcast focused on 1 Pet 3:1–7. In the NIV it reads:  "Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."   Exploring the cultural background, Jeannine suggests that Peter is calling Christians to display behaviors that reflect Christ even as male dominance was a given. Jeannine explained that in the first century, Roman interest in well-organized households should mirror a well-organized Rome. Roman citizens were to live harmoniously within a well-organized Roman household. Where the passage makes a surprising move is in the call for husbands to have empathy for their wives with a consequence: that God will hear their prayers. Further Christian wives should view themselves beyond the cultural standard of female beauty. As the passage states: it's not the adorning of women's outer selves but their inner lives of faith in God. Doing right, and with faith that does not give into fear given God is ultimately in control. This passage is countercultural in its emphasis on Christian faith and the development of a peaceful inner life both of which acknowledge God's supremacy versus that of emperor's.     This passage calls both husbands and wives to do what is right: to be brave, to have faith in God who rules over all of Rome's emperors, verse 7, to live within a culture with very differing values that offend Christian moral life. In this passage there is a tension in negotiating life lived in a culture at odds with Christian values, supremely concerning the divinity Jesus, or that of an emperor. While Jesus died on a Roman cross, even so, the passage evokes faith and courage in Christian households. The passage is helpful to missionaries in similar circumstances. How to live with courage and faith, elevating the gospel with behavior more often than words in a culture that exploited slaves and women.     Turning to 1 Peter 3:7 that reads:  "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers."     The Petrine texts lean into sibling language, especially that of children, which overall is very egalitarian in the cultural context of first century. Further, the language of “father” was not very much present in NT as it was in 1st century non-Christian texts. God's children in Christ were to face each other in humility and this very egalitarian impulse in relating to one another. God is father, but in Christ we're all siblings. Women and men are co-heirs is throughout NT. Leadership structure are notes but not ones in the NT.     The whole Petrine text is a significant challenge to the top-down rule from emperor as God down throughout the household structure which was central. Given what Peter is doing with family metaphors—of believers as children / siblings who are to love earnestly as family love each other, and as the elders are a group too much have wisdom but must lead by example. These impulses, leader on top, and wife below: this does simplify decisions, but this is not the texture of Peter. As he thinks of his context, and the household code, it is not a prescription but a triage—a pathway for healing top-down leadership. It's what Christians do in an emergency. Emergency advice to the Christian community so it can survive. It's about survival for the most vulnerable. The thrust of text is a call to attentiveness to the most vulnerable. In light of Tom Holland's book—Dominion: How the Christian Revolution Remade the World—in brutal detail reveals the cruelty of Rome. In thinking of our next, the advice is that even if you suffer for doing good, you are blessed. And take comfort in that truth and knowledge that even those who slanders you, remain loyal to Christ, if you suffer as Jesus did, you will also share in his glory.  In fascinating detail, Jeannine describes the history of Bible translation and the canonical review that follows. For the NIV team, on which she contributes, their voting policy requires a 75% majority in approving translation choices. Thus, the team must make a compelling case to change something, so for 1 Peter, and the NT generally, it's always wise to examine and read many translations to see differences.     In considering the backdrop in which the text arises, submission is not a new requirement. What is new for this culture is to ask that all behavior must be Christ-like. While believers are clearly frightened by opposition to Christian faith, the text calls them to act in ways that others will recognize their soul-allegiance to Christ. Win others over to Christ not out of fear but confident behavior that imitates Christ's live. Jeannine recommends entering the text with a disciplined imagination that brings implications of texts to life then and now. Idolatry is key issue underlining the concerns in this text which encourages faith and living life not with words but by example.   Jeannine points listeners to the following resources:  Nijay Gupta's book, Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught and Ministered in the Early Church.   Listen to Jeannine Brown's Hayward Lectures at Acadia Divinity College  Jeannie will resume this conversation in subsequent episodes of Women and Worlds: Exploring the Difficult Passages.    Disclaimer  The opinions expressed in CBE's Mutuality Matters' podcast are those of its hosts or guests and do not purport to reflect the opinions or views of CBE International or its members or chapters worldwide. In this episode, we dive deeper into biblical gender roles, continuing the conversation from last week where we focused on women in the church. This time, we shift the spotlight to men and their responsibility to work, provide, and lead—and how much they should be working according to Scripture. We also unpack the God-ordained calling for women to bear children and manage the home, and why this isn't just cultural—it's spiritual. We show how these roles are deeply tied to salvation, obedience, and a faithful relationship with God (1 Timothy 2:15, Titus 2:4–5). Jonathan shares a powerful testimony of how having a child saved his wife, spiritually and emotionally, and why true worship and discipleship start in the home.

Nothing like jumping into a hot one, but that’s our topic this week: What does the Bible Teach About Gender Roles? We live in a culture that is deeply divided and greatly confused, not just about gender roles, but even the existence of gender. As we look into the grand story of the Bible, the Scriptures paint a beautiful picture that affirms the full and beautiful equality of every human being as a person made in the image of God, of equal worth before Him and an equal partner in the creation mandate given in Genesis 1 & 2. On the other hand, the story also affirms the goodness of gender, God creating His image bearers as male and female, and therefore, different biologically and emotionally, and having different roles in the home and the church. Today we will explain a theological position called “Complementarianism” which seeks to affirm both the equality and differences of the two genders. And we will share that the path to our flourishing as individuals, families, churches, and communities happens when we rightly understand how the Bible defines our humanity and we seek to submit to His purpose and will for our lives.

From mental health struggles to educational decline, David and Curtis take a hard look at what's shaping young male identity in modern America, including the outsized influence of figures like Peterson. They explore how political polarization, digital culture, and a loss of purpose are driving young men to extremes. Most importantly, they offer a redemptive vision: practical ways to cultivate virtuous masculinity through mentorship, community, and spiritual formation.   Donate to Redeeming Babel   Resources mentioned in this episode: David's column What's the Matter With Men? You've been told your hormones make you irrational. That menopause means cognitive decline, your emotions are just chemistry gone wrong, and your brain is simply too complicated to understand.Science says otherwise. This week's guest, Dr. Sarah McKay, is a neuroscientist, author, and brain health expert who's spent her career dismantling the myths we've been told about women's brains. From the idea that we're slaves to our hormones to the fear that menopause means inevitable decline, Sarah brings data, nuance, and hope to conversations that have been shaped by outdated stereotypes for far too long.We explore:Why male and female brains are more similar than different, and how cultural context shapes the differences we do seeThe surprising truth about PMS: how rates vary from 12% in France to 90% in IranWhy the stereotype that women are "more emotional" isn't backed by scienceHow your brain actually changes during menopauseThe real relationship between hormones, sleep, and brain fogWhy early puberty affects girls and boys so differentlyWhat brain networks do when estrogen declinesThe truth about HRT and brain health: what the data actually showsHow expectations and cultural narratives create the experiences we haveSarah doesn't dismiss women's struggles or minimize real symptoms. Instead, she offers something more powerful: the understanding that our brains are not broken, fragile, or at the mercy of our biology. They're sophisticated, adaptive, and capable of remarkable reorganization throughout our lives. This isn't about toxic positivity or dismissing genuine challenges. It's about recognizing that the stories we've been told about women's brains, that we're irrational, unstable, or declining, aren't just wrong. They're actively shaping our reality.Love,Sarah Ann

In this engaging episode, I welcome Chantelle Raven from the Embodied Awakening Academy to explore the evolving dynamics in relationships, focusing on the concept of the "masculine provider." We dive into the pressures men face as financial providers and the expectations women have regarding arousal and partnership. Chantelle highlights the unfair societal expectations placed on men while acknowledging the roles women play. She shares her personal journey towards financial independence and how these dynamics manifest in her relationship with Matisse, who offers emotional and familial support instead of financial. Our conversation emphasizes the importance of equality in relationships, suggesting that provision extends beyond finances to include emotional care and household responsibilities. We discuss how energies and responsibilities should flow naturally in a relationship, free from traditional gender roles or entitlement, and how this is crucial for personal empowerment and shared responsibilities. As we continue, I share insights from my own relationship and reflect on the upcoming birth of my baby, considering how these dynamics of providing and relational flow evolve with fatherhood. We highlight the significance of mutual respect and balance, ensuring all partners feel seen and appreciated in their roles. Our discussion challenges societal norms that pressure men and women into predefined roles. Towards the end, we shift focus to personal growth, community, and the transformative potential of workshops like Living Tantra, inviting listeners to explore deeper personal and relational transformations. This episode navigates the nuanced dialogue of traditional masculine and feminine roles, personal empowerment, and the creation of balanced, nurturing partnerships. The gender divide is tearing through every corner of our lives right now, and honestly? It's fucking confusing out there. While ambitious women are crushing it in boardrooms and lecture halls, we're watching a crisis of masculinity unfold in real time—and the dating challenges that follow are enough to make you want to swipe left on humanity altogether. How did we get to a place where traditional gender roles feel both completely outdated and weirdly appealing again, where toxic masculinity battles with something called "tonic masculinity," and where the trad wife movement is somehow trending on the same timeline as record-breaking female college enrollment? If you're watching this cultural battlefield from the middle like I am, wondering what the hell happened to just... connecting with people, then buckle up because we're about to unpack why everyone feels so damn lost.In today's episode, we're talking about everything from the rise of incels to why Gen Z is rushing back to church, plus the real tea on why building meaningful friendships in adulthood feels harder than landing your dream job. This isn't about picking sides—it's about understanding how gender and mental health, modern family dynamics, and our collective fear of rejection are shaping the way we love, work, and show up in the world. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why the gender divide is creating an 80/20 dating crisis that's leaving high-achieving women struggling to find equal partnersThe shocking data behind the crisis of masculinity—including why suicide rates among young men are skyrocketing and what it means for all of usHow toxic masculinity versus tonic masculinity is reshaping what it means to be a man in 2025 (and why Tim Walz is the perfect example)The real political agenda behind the trad wife movement and why "prairie core" isn't as innocent as those sourdough starters make it seemWhy 60% of college students are now women and how this educational flip is changing modern family gender roles foreverThe connection between avoidance of pain, dating challenges, and why everyone's rushing back to traditional gender normsHow ambitious women are burning out trying to prove their worth while simultaneously being told to "lean back" into feminine energyThe surprising strategy for building deep friendships in adulthood that actually works (hint: it involves getting comfortable with rejection)If this episode hit a nerve, GOOD! It means you're awake and ready to stop avoiding the hard conversations that actually change things. The state of gender roles is playing out in every boardroom, bedroom, and dating app, and understanding why we've ended up here gives you serious power to navigate it all differently. So tell me: which part of this cultural shift resonates most with your own experience? Are you feeling the dating struggles, the friendship challenges, or maybe you're questioning everything you thought you knew about modern gender norms? If you're ready to build something meaningful in your business, relationships, or leadership while working through any of this cultural chaos, book a free strategy call with me at allisonhare.com/freecall to find your voice in this shifting landscape.Links & Mentioned Resources"The Mask You Live In" - Documentary by Jennifer Newsome (Gavin Newsom's wife) about how boys are socialized to suppress emotionsThe Lost Boys Study - Research from The Center for Social Justice (UK-based organization) examining educational and economic disparities affecting young menEmily in Your Phone - Substack newsletter by Emily Amick discussing the political undertones of the tradwife movementLaunch your podcast - Book a free clarity call with AllisonNotable Time Stamps00:01 - Episode introduction: The elephant in the gender studies room and why everything feels confusing right now02:30 - Growing up in the 90s: How women were socialized to be small, pleasant, and pick-me girls06:45 - The makeup bag story: Personal reflection on teenage socialization and the need to "present perfectly"09:15 - The Lost Boys Study: Data on how men are struggling educationally, economically, and mentally12:20 - Male suicide crisis: Why suicide is now the leading cause of death for men under 5014:10 - "The Mask You Live In" documentary discussion: How boys are limited to only two emotions17:35 - Toxic vs. tonic masculinity explained (Tim Walz as an example)19:45 - The incel movement and Andrew Tate's influence on frustrated young men25:30 - The tradwife movement: Political undertones behind the "prairie core" aesthetic31:20 - Personal story: Leaving corporate job and unlearning "never rely on a man" messaging36:15 - Modern dating crisis: The 80/20 problem and educational gender flip40:25 - Friendship struggles: The shame of not having a best friend as a high-performing woman43:50 - Coach Dara's friendship strategy: Being upfront about wanting deep connections48:30 - Avoidance of pain as the root of cultural problems52:15 - Final thoughts on connection, rejection, and getting out of comfort zones Be sure to rate, review, and follow this podcast on your player and also, connect with me IRL for more goodness and life-changing stuff.Schedule a FREE podcast clarity call with me - Your future audience is out there. In the final episode of Gender War Games, host Cristen Conger joins Material Girls co-hosts Hannah McGregor and Marcelle Kosman to unpack how white womanhood is activated—politically, culturally, algorithmically—to reinforce systems of power.
