Gratitude Week 4 // Gratitude is a Choice Gratitude is a Choice Gratitude is a Disposition Romans 1:20-22 (NIV)“For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.” 2 Corinthians 4:4, 6-11, 16-18 (NIV)“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God… For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body… Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Gratitude Doesn't Depend on Circumstances, but it Determines How We See Circumstances… Psalm 136 (NIV)Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever.Give thanks to the Lord of lords:His love endures forever.to him who alone does great wonders,His love endures forever.who by his understanding made the heavens,His love endures forever.who spread out the earth upon the waters,His love endures forever.who made the great lights—His love endures forever. the sun to govern the day,His love endures forever.the moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever.to him who struck down the firstborn of EgyptHis love endures forever.and brought Israel out from among themHis love endures forever.with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;His love endures forever.to him who divided the Red Sea[a] asunderHis love endures forever.and brought Israel through the midst of it,His love endures forever.but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;His love endures forever.to him who led his people through the wilderness; His love endures forever.to him who struck down great kings,His love endures forever.and killed mighty kings—His love endures forever.Sihon king of the AmoritesHis love endures forever.and Og king of Bashan—His love endures forever.and gave their land as an inheritance,His love endures forever.an inheritance to his servant Israel. His love endures forever. He remembered us in our low estateHis love endures forever.and freed us from our enemies. His love endures forever. He gives food to every creature. His love endures forever.Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever. It Starts as a Practice, that Becomes a Discipline, that Becomes a Lifestyle.

Hebrews 3:4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. Perhaps you are familiar with the story of Sir Isaac Newton, who designed a model of our solar system, and a fellow astronomer who was an atheist and came other visit him. From Newton's plans, a very skilled craftsman build the model. The balls representing the planets were all geared together so that when a crank was turned, they all moved in their orbits around the sun. One day his friend visited Sir Isaac Newton, saw the model, and immediately recognized what it was. He said, “This is tremendous! Who made it?” Newton replied, “Nobody.” His friend turned to him with a confused look and said, “You must not have heard me. I asked, ‘Who made this wonderful model?'” Looking up, Newton said with a perfectly straight face, “Nobody made it. Those balls and gears just appeared and put themselves together!” His friend, now quite upset, said, "You must think I'm a fool! Of course somebody made this! He's a genius, and I'd like to meet him!” Newton's reply stunned and convicted his friend. “This model is just a poor imitation of our wonderful universe. You know the laws and the precise order which govern our universe. I can't seem to convince you that this model, this toy, does not have a designer or a maker. However, you have said many times that the solar system, which this model represents, ‘just happened.' Now tell me, is that the logical conclusion of a scientist?” His friend eventually believed in Jesus. Remember what the author said in chapter 2, verse 10? Speaking of God, he wrote, “for whom are all things, and through whom are all things.” Then in verse 11, he said that both Jesus and us “are all from one Father.” As sons and daughters of God, we are God's house being built by Jesus Christ for His glory and honor. It should be self-evident that the church's existence, geared together in love, cannot be explained naturally anymore than Newton's model could be. By design, the church is a visible model of the interrelated individual members moving and functioning in their orbits around Jesus. It is love that makes His church go round. Now tell me, isn't that a logical conclusion? Living to love with Jesus is the way the Maker designed the house to function. We are built by God, for God.

Healthy Marriages are the Foundation of Healthy Homes “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”— Genesis 2:24 1. Leave “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother… — Genesis 2:24 We must leave our parents. Your spouse is your new priority. We must leave our past. 2. Cleave “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife — Genesis 2:24 Marriage is not contractual; it's covenantal. “‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.” — Ephesians 5:31–32 3. Become “One-flesh.” “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” — Genesis 2:24 Marriage Belongs to God “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” — Genesis 3:5 When leaving becomes an issue, stress becomes the norm. If we don't cleave to each other, we will cleave to something (or someone). If you want a healthy marriage, you must have healthy hearts. “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” — Ezekiel 36:26 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation…” — 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God…” — John 3:3
Jacob Richardson teaches that there's a big difference between serving God for the glory of God and serving God for our own glory. God desires leaders to serve, not steal. Pretending to serve God for selfish gain leads to shame. Serving God by the power of his Spirit leads to freedom. Sin brings judgement, and we have an opportunity to repent.
This week in the study of Philemon, we walk through verses 4-7 and discuss how all that we do is not just in response to what God has done for us, but in reverence for God.

Our Only Hope for Loving God Scripture: Psalm 63:1–11 Speaker: Jon Morales, Lead Pastor of Oak Pointe Church As our Prayer series concludes, we'll look at the totality of Psalm 63 and note the not-so-subtle shift in vs. 9–11. For the first eight verses, the focus is firmly on David's love and admiration for God. But suddenly, his attention turns to those who would be threats to the king. The language change is so abrupt it's as if these three verses don't even fit the psalm. Yet, through the contrast these verses provide, we discover our only hope of loving God for God.
C'mon, My Soul! Scripture: Psalm 42 Speaker: Adam Mashni, 707 High School Ministry Pastor This week we study a psalm that embodies life on the struggle bus. The psalmist longs to be at the Temple praising God as he has done before. But life has him somewhere else, in far more challenging circumstances, and he's yearning for relief. Yet, we see a beautiful refrain where he turns, pauses, and begins coaching himself in the ways of God. When life gets tough, it can be hard to connect with God. But Psalm 42 provides prayer tools to help us turn our eyes upward when spiraling down.
Training to Love God for God Scripture: Psalm 63:1–8 Speaker: Jon Morales, Lead Pastor of Oak Pointe Church Late in 1965, in Detroit, Marvin Gaye and Kim Weston recorded “It Takes Two,” a song that depicted many things in life (dreams, love, wishes, etc.) being better with two people instead of one. But human relationships require diligent and ongoing work to flourish, and both parties must contribute. Our relationship with God is no different. If we're going to love God for God, then God must do something, and we must do something. In this week's message, we'll discover those two things.
Intimacy With God Scripture: Psalm 63:1 Speaker: Jon Morales, Lead Pastor of Oak Pointe Church When David wrote Psalm 63, he did so from an experience of being captivated by God. He is so enamored with who God is and what God does for him that his heart overflows into these eleven verses. But clearly, this is not a normative experience for people of faith. Even though hundreds of millions around the globe attend church each weekend, many do not experience an ongoing deep connection with God. Why is intimacy with God so rare? Beginning this Sunday, we'll embark on a four-week series from the Psalms called Prayer: Loving God For God. These will not simply be messages about prayer but will actively teach us how to pray! We'll discover that as our prayer life improves, so will our intimacy with God.

I've got good news and bad news. The bad news is: my wife, who is 32 weeks pregnant, contracted covid & has been really miserable. The good news? God's people have overwhelmed us with love. I don't know how people make it in this life without the church, I know I sure couldn't. And it's not just us, our church family does this for so many time and time again. Well...that's the way it should be. God has designed his people to be those that have been changed from the inside out by the love of God. They should love, not to receive anything in return, but because they cannot help to share what they've received themselves from God - compassion, mercy, and grace. Thank God for God's people!

Pastor Cole is teaching a series on friendship with Jesus (John 13–17). In John 15:7–13, Jesus continues teaching from the angle of abiding in his love. Pastor Cole is preaching this morning on how abiding cultivates in us a wanting God for God, not just the things he gives us.
David is speaking to us regarding a worldview and perspective we've got to have. The text tells us that God guides us for God's glory-God's aim is fame for the sake of His name.
