Today's episode is with Russ Laraway, a seasoned leader who's been at Google, Twitter, Candor Inc, Qualtrics, and is now the Chief People Officer for Goodwater Capital Since we last had Russ on the show, he's written a new book, titled: “When They Win, You Win.” On today's episode, we dive deep into the management frameworks and original research that Russ discusses in his book. He starts by pointing out how broken our process for selecting managers is to begin with, where we often default to just promoting the highest performer on a team, rather than looking for folks who explicitly demonstrate leadership chops. He explains the raw ingredients that point to whether someone's ready to take on a management role — even if they weren't the best individual contributor of the bunch. And if you're looking to hire a manager from outside of the company, he's got plenty of interview questions to suss out the right hire. Next, we explore the heaps of research that Russ did in writing this book, and how that led to him pulling together a few specific frameworks for managers to lean on. This includes a list of the behaviors of highly-engaging managers — and how you can put these into practice. As Russ discusses in today's interview, there are countless resources out there on how to be a better manager — often with tons of conflicting advice. Russ distills all of this down to an essential, research-backed guide for the modern manager that cuts through the noise. You can follow Russ on Twitter at @ral1. His book, “When They Win, You Win” comes out on June 7, 2022. You can email us questions directly at review@firstround.com or follow us on Twitter @ twitter.com/firstround and twitter.com/brettberson
Do you want to create a stronger, more harmonious team? If yes, then you shouldn't shy away from giving feedback, receiving it, and encouraging it. Kim Scott, a long-time director at Google and co-founder of Candor Inc., states that giving feedback is the single most important thing a boss can do. But how do you ensure your team gets the right kind of guidance? She introduces a tool called the Radical Candor. In this episode, our host Madhavi Ravanan and guest speaker, Krupa Natarajan, discuss the value of Radical Candor. Krupa got candid about the aha! Moments in her life, how she had to undo the “if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all” training that's been drilled into our heads, and some of the strategies that helped her deliver radical candor. Tune in to listen to this episode and gain insights into how you can grow into a great manager and leader and build a workplace where people love their jobs and do great work.
If I asked you, could you tell me where your main water shutoff valve is for your home? Do you leave your garage door opener in your car? These are just a couple of important questions you should ask yourself. This episode begins by answering those and other questions and answers you really need to know. https://www.familyhandyman.com/smart-homeowner/things-every-homeowner-must-know/ As sincere as you think you are, most of the smiles you make throughout the day are fake ones. That's just one of the fascinating things about smiling I discuss with Marianne LaFrance, professor of psychology at Yale University and author of the book Why Smile? The Science Behind Facial Expressions (https://amzn.to/31n2v8X). Listen as she explains why we smile, what smiling can do for you and what your smile communicates to other people. More people put up artificial Christmas trees than real ones. Artificial trees look a lot more realistic than they used to but are they a better choice? Actually there are pros and cons to both. Listen and decide which you should choose this year. https://www.realsimple.com/holidays-entertaining/holidays/real-christmas-tree-vs-artificial-christmas-tree Of course, you have heard the expression: “If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.” However, that wisdom is flawed according to Kim Scott, CEO of Candor Inc and author of the book Radical Candor (https://amzn.to/2rcq6XI). This is particularly true in the workplace where we need to be honest and direct. Listen as Kim reveals how important it is to say what needs to be said and how to do it without sounding like a jerk. Kim Scott is the Co-Founder @ Candor, the startup that allows you to become a better leader. Prior to founding Candor, Kim was a CEO coach at Dropbox, Qualtrics, Twitter and several other Silicon Valley companies. She was a member of the faculty at Apple University, developing the course “Managing at Apple,” and before that spent 5 years at Google on AdSense, YouTube, and Doubleclick Online Sales and Operations at Google. Previously, Kim was the co-founder and CEO of Juice Software, a collaboration start-up. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Kim came to founder Candor and be an advisor to Twitter, Qualtrics and Dropbox? 2.) How did Kim's interactions with Sheryl Sandberg while at Google shape how Kim views employee feedback? What is the most effective way for a superior to convey their feedback to their employee? 3.) What really is radical candor? How does it differ to more traditional "feedback"? What are the challenges of ruinous empathy? How does this play out in the work environment? How does this contrast to "obnoxious aggression"? 4.) Is this a gender issue? What makes it so difficult for people to be radically candid? Why is it a problem that people are told to 'be professional'? How does that act to de-humanize people? 5.) How do males go most wrong when conveying feedback to their female counterparts? Why is this a problem for both the males and the females involved? What can the female do to ensure that she is not disadvantaged by this?
