Train Your Clients: Boundaries, Burnout, and the Culture You Build

Choose People Love Pets

Episode Summary: Nobody teaches you this in vet school — how to train clients. In this episode, Dr. Armstrong and Phoebe dive deep into the unseen impact clients have on hospital culture, team wellbeing, and long-term sustainability. Together, they break down how to set — and stick to — boundaries that shape the clientele you want, reduce burnout, and foster a consistent, supportive environment for your team. From not giving out your personal number, to handling unrealistic expectations around call-backs and fear-free care, they share real examples and actionable strategies for both doctors and CSRs. Plus, they explore how standardizing boundaries across the doctor team protects your culture and makes your hospital a better place to work — and a better place to be a client. Topics Covered: Why boundaries should be part of orientation (for staff and clients) The danger of inconsistency between team members What makes an “ideal client” (and how to attract more of them) Real conversations that build trust — and when to let a client go How boundary-setting reduces burnout and boosts work-life balance Mentioned in this episode: Our upcoming “DVM Off Script” series debuting in two weeks with Dr. Cindy Trice!  Submit experiences you would like us to unpack in our Lead By Example episodes here: choosepeoplelovepets@outlook.com  Follow for more:  FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556480229406&mibextid=LQQJ4d  IG: https://www.instagram.com/choosepeoplelovepets?igsh=MTVzZjc4ZHE4MWd2NQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr  LI: https://www.linkedin.com/company/choose-people-love-pets/

In this episode, we dig into how to train your team to give feedback that's not just honest, but helpful. We break it down into three essential questions: Have you done your homework? Is it an individual issue or a systemic one? Are you being intentional with how you deliver the message? And at the heart of it all? Curiosity. Approaching conversations with curiosity instead of assumptions is what keeps feedback constructive—and keeps your culture thriving. What does it take to turn a “no” into a movement? This week on MissionCTRL, Ramon and Kevin sit down with Lucas Pimentel, founder of Latinos for Educational Advocacy and Diversity (LEAD), to unpack how one man's fight for educational equity sparked a statewide transformation.Lucas was just a teacher when he decided to help a group of parents bring a charter school to Danbury, Connecticut—a city where 68% of students are Latino but lacked this crucial option. When the project was blocked by a legislator, something clicked. With no nonprofit experience, but a fire in his gut, he stepped into advocacy with nothing but a vision, a Canva logo, and a mission to unify Latino voices. From drafting LEAD's logo on a Starbucks napkin to opening a fully operational community center in Danbury in 2021, Lucas has grown the organization into a powerhouse with seven locations across Connecticut—and plans for more. LEAD provides everything from financial literacy to civic engagement workshops, ESL classes, and health education. Born in the Dominican Republic, raised with political legacy and personal loss, Lucas' story is one of passion, persistence, and purpose. He's redefining what advocacy looks like—and proving that when you can't get a seat at the table, you build your own.Tune in as the MissionCTRL crew explores how grassroots activism, strategic storytelling, and relentless belief can create systems-level change. In this episode, we explore how being a great doctor in veterinary medicine isn't always about following the gold standard of care. While it's easy to feel we're doing a good job when we can provide the ideal treatment, many limitations—like client budgets, differing priorities, or the pet's specific needs—can prevent us from doing so. Instead, we emphasize the importance of making the best plan within the given constraints and redefining what it means to practice good medicine. By being kinder to ourselves and accepting that perfect care isn't always possible, we can help alleviate the burnout and compassion fatigue so common in our industry. Compassionate, thoughtful care often means adapting to the situation at hand, and this mindset shift is key to better mental health and sustainable practice. And it's there that they should be learning about how Jesus influences all areas of our lives. So, what kind of example are you providing? Your kids don't expect perfection, but they want you to be genuine with your faith. If loving the Lord and his Word is a priority for you, your personal example will go a long way in helping your children to also love the Lord with all their heart, soul, and mind. For more encouragement and parenting advice, visit Trail Life USA or RaisingGodlyBoys.com.

In this episode, we dive into the concept of "Innovating with Intention"—how to navigate the discomfort and overwhelm that often accompany change, while setting up your team for success. Innovation is crucial for progress, but change can feel daunting, especially when it challenges the status quo or pushes people out of their comfort zones. The episode explores practical strategies for creating an environment where innovation is not just accepted, but embraced. Key takeaways include: Understanding the Why: It's essential to help your team understand the why behind the change. When the vision is clear and the purpose is aligned with the team's values and goals, it becomes easier to embrace new ways of working. Leading with Empathy: Change can trigger fear and resistance, but empathetic leadership can help ease the transition. Leaders must acknowledge and address concerns, offer reassurance, and provide the emotional support that allows the team to navigate the uncertainty of innovation. Setting Realistic Expectations: Innovation doesn't happen overnight. Setting realistic milestones and celebrating small wins can build momentum and help the team feel confident as they move forward. Building a Culture of Psychological Safety: Encouraging open communication and making it clear that failure is a part of the process helps create a safe environment where people feel comfortable experimenting and trying new ideas. Empowering Team Members: Involving team members in the decision-making process and giving them ownership of the innovation journey can foster a sense of commitment and excitement. Accepting the Discomfort: Change is inherently uncomfortable, but with the right tools and mindset, discomfort can be transformed into an opportunity for growth. Leaders who model resilience and adaptability inspire their teams to do the same. The episode emphasizes that while innovation can be challenging, it is also an exciting opportunity for growth. By leading with intention, fostering open communication, and prioritizing empathy, leaders can guide their teams through the uncertainty and toward a successful, forward-thinking future. What if the secret to raising confident, empathetic, and healthy kids lies not in what you tell them, but in what you model for them every day? Tune in to discover practical strategies for integrating holistic well-being into both your life and your children's, and start leading by example today! About Autumn Swain Dr. Autumn Swain began her work in the faith-based nonprofit space by working with youth and families through a grassroots community development corporation, Nehemiah: Center for Urban Leadership Development. It was in this space that she found a way to use her gifts at the intersection of leadership and community development as well as holistic well-being involving both cross cultural and cross sector initiatives to impact leaders and their organizations through the company she founded, The Aligned Leader. It is Dr. Swain's belief that one of the greatest assets in our communities are its leaders, whether children or adults. Her unique perspective supports collaborative efforts and holistic strategies, increasing the capacity, health and fulfillment in the leader, their teams, and communities. In 2022, as a presenter at CCDA, a national gathering of leaders from all sectors, including faith-based institutions, non-profits, government and corporations with social impact initiatives, she focused on innovative strategies for community renewal through the integration of a blueprint for leader well-being. The general consensus was that leaders are not well; they are burnt out, stressed and overwhelmed.
