One of the largest sections of the Psalms are songs of lament and sadness. God knows this is part of life and he gives us some vocabulary to help process it. Sometimes life doesn't go as planned. Sometimes you don't get the trophy. Sometimes you don't get the grades. Sometimes you don't get the job. Sometimes the relationship breaks apart. Sometimes you experience loss. Sometimes tears become too common. Sometimes grief is too familiar. Sometimes your heart breaks. Sometimes God feels distant. Each of these Psalms points us toward the hope only God can give us. God has given us His Son, Jesus so that we can live a FULLY ALIVE life. We've learned that His love is the only love that lasts forever! While others may disappoint, Jesus is faithful. His sacrifice has delivered us from the guilt of our past and sins. This foundation is critical to our freedom. This weekend we celebrated the hinge point of history. All of human history has either pointed to the resurrection of Christ or points back to it. It is the most important question of history. The answer to that question leads to the most important personal question: "What will you do with Jesus?" The work of Jesus enables us to become fully alive. Because he lives, I can live also. Many in our world are looking for things that will give them life. Their hearts propel them from the inside giving motivation and direction. But what if what their hearts desired was actually killing them. Only in Christ can we become fully alive. Before he left, Jesus assured the disciples he would send them the Holy Spirit to be in them. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. We were so excited to bring our original production of A Christmas Noir this weekend! This year's Christmas Program was a creative parody of three detectives from the Wiseman Brothers Detective Agency, looking for the Christ child. Our kids worked very hard during all the uncertainty of this pandemic. As we finished our "Pro-Humanity" series, we looked at three ideas, attitudes and actions that come from the corrupted human heart. These three: racism, pornography and abortion all de-humanize people. Jesus rebuked his disciples for creating an Us vs. Them mentality within their group. They even went so far as to want to burn down the city that rejected them. Jesus said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them.” And they went to another village. Athens was a pluralistic society. Every idea, nationality, religion was represented: Jews, God-fearing Gentiles, Epicurean philosophers, Stoic philosophers. Each had their answers to the big questions of origin, identity, meaning, morality, and destiny. We live in interesting times. Yet God has you here for this moment in history. He chose you to make a difference for him in this season. As our culture moves further away from God know that the church was made for these moments. First, we must reckon with our distraction and apathy. Our passion and love for God must be primary in our lives. Second, we must become people of prayer. In a prosperous society, it's easy to become reliant on our abilities rather than the Lord. Third, we must love radically and go out of our way to love well. Fourth, we should look to walk differently than the world. Righteousness will show that we are different. We cannot push for external change if we are not first internally changed. We cannot adopt the immoral practices of the world and expect to change it. This is our moment. Regardless of our external culture, we can work to proclaim and live these ideals: Any idea that claims to promote human flourishing without promoting a connection with the Creator of humanity is deficient and idolatrous. Any idea that claims to promote human flourishing without taking into account eternity may be wise for a moment but foolish forever. Any idea that promotes human flourishing while suppressing the truth is dangerous. Any idea that tries to promote human flourishing while at the same time denying others the right to be human is cruel. Any idea that claims to promote human flourishing while diminishing the God-given design of the family is destructive. Any idea that claims to promote human flourishing while contaminating the environment where humans live is corrosive.
