Christine Chang Lee continues Advent series. Title: Joy and the Kingdom of God. Text: Isaiah 52:1-10 and 52:8 Worship by Pastor Aaron and RC3 Team
It's good news - Pieces of Eighth has been renewed and is back for a second season! Over the course of the next 13 weeks, we're going to bring you all-new, exclusive interviews with the people who have made the Eighth Doctor who he is, whether as writers, actors, artists, musicians or anything else. Having finished last season with a two-part Philip Segal interview, Rebecca and Kenny are continuing with people with TV Movie credits, as they chat with Chang Lee himself, Yee Jee Tso, from his home in Vancouver. They talk about his casting, turning up late, working with Eric Roberts, the TARDIS set, and publishing his book of TV Movie photographs.
Series: The Resurrection Life Title: The energy of God Text: Philippians 2:12-18 Summary: In the finale of this series, Christine Chang explores the unique phrase from the Apostle Paul that we should "continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling." Though the word 'work' can conjure certain ideas, this verse sounds completely different when we look at it through the etymology of the word energy.
Title: One Family through the Cross Series: The book of Galatians Text: Galatians 3:1-14 Summary: While continuing to confront what he believes to be a perversion of the Gospel within the Galatian church, the apostle Paul highlights a foundational truth: that Jesus made a way for all of us to come home to the love of the triune God as a single family, through his work on the cross. This radically inclusive nature of Christ has vast implications for our own sense of collective identity in the family of God.
Title: Radical Dependence Text: Luke 23:26-43 Summary: What is humility? Humility is often a confusing term, used in different ways in different contexts. Oftentimes humility is seen as a general lowering of self-regard. But does this fully describe the humility of God himself, through Jesus Christ? Augustine, one of the most influential early church fathers on western theology, would say no, it is not incorrect, but it is incomplete. Augustine considered humility the single most important virtue of the Christian faith, and through his perspective, this sermon explores the possibility that humility is actually much more foundational - it is, at its root, radical dependence on God.
Text: Jeremiah 2:1-13 Title: Naming Our Cisterns Summary: God's promise is to be a spring of living water to those who seek Him. But we all face temptations to dig our own cisterns instead, broken cisterns that can't actually hold water. Looking to the prophesies of Jeremiah, we can name and understand the cisterns that the people of Judah had built, to shine light on our own walk with the Lord.
NEW TO WHO and THE TV MOVIE“We’re back - and it’s about time!”Late July, 2019: the brink of a new episode of New To Who. An anachronistic Australian podcast materialises in San Francisco (or is that Vancouver?) amid a hail of laughter which finds its intentional targets - three strange men who walk out of the pod.But Col, Dan, and Steven are not the only podcasters in Vancouver. Doctor Who royalty, Jeremy Radick - who appears as Gareth in the 1996 TV Movie - is there as well, joining New To Who for a very special episode.Seven years after disappearing from television screens everywhere, Doctor Who came back - but for one night only. The script for The TV Movie (also unofficially known as “The Enemy Within”) was written by Matthew Jacobs - whose father appeared in the William Hartnell story, The Gunfighters - while Philip Segal was finally able to bring his vision for Doctor Who to a US mainstream audience for the first time in his role as Executive Producer of this American co-production with Fox. Geoffrey Sax, another Englishman in Hollywood, directs this big budget movie intended as a pilot for a Doctor Who series on network television.Taking the mantle of the Doctor, this time in his eighth incarnation, was the dreamy Paul McGann. Daphne Ashbrook played his companion-in-waiting, Dr Grace Holloway, alongside Jee Yee Tso as Chang Lee, who falls under the spell of the Master - this time played fabulously by Eric Roberts. You can listen to and see the film clip for The Safety Dance by Canadian new wave outfit Men Without Hats here.Theme by Our Colin (2019). Much love and thanks, Col! ❤︎Special thanks to Sarah Tout at Voice Box Media Training. You can now find New To Who on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Podbean, and PlayerFM.NEW TO WHO WILL RETURN
Title: Undivided Heart Series: Life in (Multicultural) Community Summary: In Psalm 86, David prays for God's protection and deliverance, from a posture of praise and worship. Within this prayer, he asks God: "Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth. Give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name." Using this prayer as a backdrop, this sermon explores the urgent need for deliverance from the lie of white supremacy, which separates us from ourselves, one another, and from God - and considers that liberation from this lie comes only from the reconciling power of Jesus, who restores the Imago Dei in each of us, uniting our divided hearts as one.
Text: John 4:4-26, 39-42 Title: Being in the Light Summary: In John 3 and 4, Jesus first reveals his identity as the Christ to two individuals - Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman - well before he does so in public spaces. These two figures are best held together in tandem with one another, to understand the revelatory nature of Jesus' message, and the diverse community of believers who responded to him. John makes a point to identify the time of day when they each interacted with Jesus: nighttime for Nicodemus, noon for the Samaritan woman. While some have interpreted the Samaritan woman's presence at the well at noon as indicative of her publicly-known role as an adulteress, a closer look into historical context reveals this is not a sound conclusion. Which leaves the question: why did John so clearly indicate the time of day in both encounters? When we hold the two stories together, we see a strong connection between Jesus' teaching to Nicodemus on light (that whoever lives by truth comes into the light) and the setting for the woman's encounter with Jesus (at the height of the noonday sun, when nothing can be hidden). When we reframe our interpretation of this passage with the symbolism of light as our starting point, we find that the Samaritan woman has much to teach us about what it looks like to be in the light.
Series: Two Masters Title: Two Masters-Two Kingdoms Text: Matthew 16:19-26 Summary: from the Rich Young Ruler’s encounter with Jesus, we see the importance of his economic-political-religious context, his “system”, in framing his assumptions about Jesus, and ultimately leading him to choose his existing life of earned merit, over eternal life as a disciple of Jesus. As followers of Jesus today, we would do well to critically understand the system of our day and age - largely driven by the intertwining of American capitalism and the Christian church - to more clearly see the same choice that lies before each of us. Historians point to opposition to FDR’s federal New Deal programs as a pivotal point in catalyzing American capitalism as we know it today. This was also the point in history when large corporations funneled money and influence into an organization called Spriritual Mobilization, which organized and influenced thousands of American pastors toward the cause of capitalism. Given this complicated history, it is vital to continually check our assumptions and discern what aspects of our daily lives are truly driven by the teachings of Jesus, and what aspects are driven by the system of money and power that surrounds us.
Series: Love is... John 13:1-17 Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet 13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” 10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. 12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Series: The Parables of Jesus Title: The Lamp of the Body Speaker: Christine Chang Lee Text: Luke 11:33-36 Summary: The imagery of light is one of the most consistent images used to describe the nature of God throughout the Bible. In this sermon, Christine reflects on the teaching of Jesus that the light of God is also inside of us. How do we best protect and steward that light?

"This cannot be how it ends!" Well it damn nearly was. Yes, it's time to reconsider the 1996 Paul McGann TV Movie, with its gun fights, fist fights, car chases, snogging and schmaltz (no way was this an American production!). The Doctor is now only half-Gallifreyan with a naff syrup and an Addams Family interior design sense, while the Master is now part-snake, part-personal lubricant dispenser, with a penchant for "drezzing" up. Thank Bod for Amazing Grace with her static tear and innate knowledge of Time Lord temporal mechanics and for Chang Lee's hip high-fiving - keeping us well and truly anchored to the Eighties in this Millennial tale. So did Jim and Martin enjoy their Whocation in North America? Or did they yearn for Blighty with its breadline budgets, cramped sets and silly CSO? And what do they think of Peter Capaldi's casting as the 12th Doctor? Listen here to find out, y'all!
