This month, we're diving into the 2001 BBC Books Eighth Doctor novel, Father Time. Following on from our recent synopsis episode, this is the main event: a full discussion of the novel—what works, what doesn't, and how it fits into the broader Eighth Doctor era. We also explore the plot, the tone, and some standout characters, including the Doctor's daughter, Miranda! Before all that, we kick things off with the usual mix of news and short topics you've come to expect. Then, after the book chat, we open the mailbag for a bumper listener feedback section—nearly 25 minutes of your thoughts, theories, and reactions. Our listeners are the best. And if you enjoy our musical moments, don't skip the end! Inspired by some of that listener feedback, we play a very special song after the closing credits—one that was nearly lost to time after its chance to appear in a recent episode of Gin & TARDIS came and went. Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, John Dorney joins us in northern Scotland to investigate the disappearance of the Ninth Legion — only to discover that there are things here even more terrible than the Roman army, things that can only be fought with trust and empathy and music. It's The Eaters of Light. Notes and links Crash (2004) starts with a voiceover by Don Cheadle, laying out the terms of the metaphorical link between car crashes and human interactions generally. It's not a very popular movie, not only because of its superficial approach to issues of race, but also because it won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Picture instead of Brokeback Mountain. Richard mentions American YA fiction writer Scott Westerfield, particularly the Uglies series with its teenage protagonist. He also mentions William Golding's 1954 novel Lord of the Flies, where a group of schoolchildren stranded without adults on a deserted island, quickly revert to savagery. Brian Vernel was born in 1990, so he was 26 or 27 when he played Lucius in this episode, and 32 when he played far-right extremist Curly in the first season of Slow Horses in 2022. Kar's speech about the depredations of the Roman Army is taken from the Agricola by Tacitus, a short biography of his father-in-law, chronicling, among other things his campaigns in northern Britain. Tacitus depicts the Caledonian leader Calgacus making the speech just before the Battle of Mount Graupius, in which his forces were defeated by the Romans. You can read the speech in translation here. This week's monster is based on very common depictions found in Pictish carvings of an animal called the Pictish Beast. Some depictions are found among the carvings seen in this episode. Tania Bell is a companion to the Eighth Doctor, first appearing in Big Finish's Stranded in 2020 — the first transgender companion to appear in Doctor Who. She is played by Rebecca Root. John has written five stories for Tania: her second story Wild Animals, as well as The Long Way Round, What Just Happened?, Best Year Ever and Flatpack (in which she meets Christopher Ecclston's Ninth Doctor). John writes for Michelle Gomez as Missy in Divorced, Beheaded, Regenerated and in Too Many Masters. Follow us Nathan is on Bluesky at @nathanbottomley.com and Brendan is at @retrobrendo.bsky.social; Richard is on X as @RichardLStone. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. Doctor Who first hit the airwaves in 1963 - sixty years ago! - but the TARDIS went dark in 1989 for an indefinite hiatus. In the mid-1990s, plans started brew to import the iconic British sci-fi series across the pond to America. The BBC partnered with the Fox network to produce a TV movie, which, if it performed well, could serve as the backdoor pilot for a revived series. English actor Paul McGann took over the TARDIS console as the Eighth Doctor after Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor was *checks notes* brutally gunned down by a machine-gun wielding street gang on prime-time television. Co-starring American actress Daphne Ashbrook as the doctor who tries to save him (see what I did there?) with Eric Roberts hot on their heels as The Master. Unfortunately, the special presentation was not a success, and the good Doctor remained in exile until regenerating in 2005 as Christopher Eccleston. But this is Chronovember, so we're whipping out our sonic screwdrivers and partying like it's 1999!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. In Doctor Who's early years, there were many episodes where the Doctor was noticeably absent, usually because William Hartnell or Patrick Troughton needed a holiday from the grueling shooting schedule. But Human Nature is the only episode of Doctor Who where the Doctor doesn't appear at all outside of flashbacks. Of course, David Tennant is front and center, giving a performance for the ages, literally, in John Smith. There are many reasons this episode, along with the conclusion, The Family of Blood, is so well remembered: Its central plot device tees up the climax the Series 3, it showcases some brilliant guest performances in the villainous Family, and it might even explain why the Eighth Doctor said he was “half-human.” But it's the love story between Doctor's alternate identity and a human woman that the story lives or dies upon. Our Doctor Who 60th Anniversary season continues with our special guest for this episode, Conrad Westmaas. Conrad is a lifelong Doctor Who fan and actor who played Eighth Doctor companion C'Rizz, a chameleonic alien from the Divergent Universe. And since it's anniversary time, it will have been 20 years in January 2024 since C'Rizz made his first appearance in Philip Martin's "The Creed of the Kromon". Conrad speaks frankly about his love of sci-fi and fantasy, what let him to being an actor, and how he felt about his time as a Doctor Who companion, including how he dealt with the negative fan reaction at the time. Thanks so much for being with us Conrad!! In this episode of WHO CORNER TO CORNER, we're joined by not one, but two Doctor Who writing luminaries - Peter Anghelides and Simon Guerrier! The duo join us to talk about their new book The Daily Doctor, an inspirational page-a-day guide to life gleaned from those moments of Doctor Who in which we learned to appreciate the small things as much as the big things, and know exactly when to run. We also discuss Big Finish, Blake's 7, the Eighth Doctor novels, working with Tom Baker, the importance of spreadsheets and (unafraid to waste the opportunity of a good plug) Simon gives us not only an exclusive look at the forthcoming  60th anniversary coffee table book Whotopia but also some some insight into his soon-to-be-released David Whitaker biopic which investigates the life and work of Doctor Who's very first story editor! All this and Geoff makes a hash of the authors' surnames (to his eternal shame), literally just seconds after asking them both how they should be pronounced!Support the show Subscribe to Who Corner to Corner on your podcast app to make sure you don't miss an episode! I am back! Jarod is also back!! This time HE brings ME some Doctor Who radio drama!!! In January 2007, a new series of Eighth Doctor audio adventures was broadcast on BBC7. These starred McGann alongside Sheridan Smith as a new companion named Lucie Miller. There were eight 50-minute episodes in total; the first and last stories were two-parters, and the rest were single episodes. These adventures have since been released on CD and that is how we listened to it. In 2008, BBC7 broadcast the second series of The New Eighth Doctor Adventures (which Big Finish had already released on CD). All fourteen episodes were then repeated in 2009, and the final two-part story later that year. Big Finish has gone on to produce two further series of these Adventures, and four selected stories from the third series were aired in 2010, with BBC Radio 4 Extra (as Radio 7 became) skipping ahead to the fourth series in early 2013. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/richard-templeman/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/richard-templeman/support
