This barmy afternoon in Holme-Next-The-Sea has gained a stiff undulating wind. It hurries past the sheep in the paddock next to St Mary's church. Whisps through banks of unmown grasses, sifting up their scent. Shakes dry-leaved hedgerows so they sound as summer dry as the baked mud looks by the lane. Yes, today certainly feels like it's the first day of late summer. Sit then on the bench underneath the fir tree. Rest back from the deep blue sky. Feel the sun's heat radiating off the parapet wall of the church. Hear the changing wind. How it hushes in the fir's needles. Rustles in the broad leaves of the deciduous trees. Rises, then calms. Causes the landscape to shift between near, and far. Surely this is how to best enjoy such a day as this. With sheep, grazing in the field nearby. And wood pigeons, roosting along the church roof and above, in the trees. Spending time on this bench, taking in the day and the various kinds of warmth that it seems to be made of, might lull you into a daydream, and a thought. How are the animals around considering this first day of late summer? Are they enjoying the scents of the grass too? The hushing of the wind in the fir tree? The yellow orange heat rising from the sun warmed ground? Maybe they too have let go their plans, and are just basking in the sensations of what it is to be conscious of everything that's presently, and pleasantly around. * We made this recording in late July 2024. It was the way the wind sounded in the fir tree that caught our interest. Finding somewhere to locate the Lento box wasn't easy but we eventually managed to find a fence post that let the box capture the fir tree as it is in the wider landscape, beside the church. Sometimes the presence of the church can be felt as it reflects bird calls and other nearby sounds. At around 26 minutes the low rumble of a distant military jet plane can be heard for a short time. This part of England hosts various very active military airbases. We were in fact lucky to capture as long as we did before more and much louder jets flew over, producing intense low frequency rumbling.
He may be nicknamed “The Beverage Whisperer,” but when Ken Sadowsky speaks he's heard loud and clear. A longtime industry advisor and investor, Ken is one of the most respected and influential voices in the beverage business. Ken is currently the executive director of The Northeastern Independent Distributors Association, known as NIDA, a group of wholesalers that operate in states from Maine to Pennsylvania. He's also a senior advisor with Verlivest, the Belgium-based investment holding company founded by the owners of Anheuser-Busch InBev, which holds stakes in Oatly, Vita Coco and Hint Water. Ken is personally invested in and an advisor to several beverage companies including LifeAid, Icelandic Glacial, Recess and Dyla Brands. This episode is the third of a trilogy with Ken, who also joined us for conversations in 2016 and 2019. Ken and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif sample drinks representing fast-growing, bleeding-edge and established categories, including better-for-you sodas, cannabis libations, nonalcoholic cocktails, and shots of the juice variety. As they sip their way through a mish-mash of beverages, Ken shares his perspective on trendy concepts, package design, formulation his investment thesis, and successful retail strategies. Show notes: 0:35: Ken Sadowsky, The Beverage Whisperer – Ken and Ray engage in some Sox talk before they dive into a mass of beverages, foreign and domestic. Ken talks about cutting his teeth back in 1983 and his ability to understand what brands have what it takes to go from “the core consumer to the more consumer” and why he's not bullish on non-nutritive sugar alternatives. They sip on some Chamberlain Coffee and chat about how the cold brew coffee category has morphed and whether non-alcoholic cocktails are – at this point – more sizzle than steak. Ken also explains why he's a fan of entrepreneurs with industry experience and why it's important to be nice to your distributors, before sipping on Olipop's limited-edition Barbie collaboration and sharing his take on the future of better-for-you sodas. He also admits to being an “illegal cannabis consumer” (not really), why you should sample beverages warm, getting retailers to merchandise your brand in two locations and the Catch-22 of fundraising. Brands in this episode: Mountain Dew, Chamberlain Coffee, Throne Sport Coffee, Vitaminwater, De Soi, Little Saints, Lapo's, Seedlip, Parch, Honest Tea, Prime, Alani Nu, Olipop, Slim Fast, Poppi, Evolution Fresh, Nantucket Nectars, Nixie, Late July, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Milonga, Recess, Magic Cactus, Alldae, Guayaki, Yerbae, Louie Louie, Fhirst, Wunderground's Brain Wash, Califia Farms, Starbucks, Loom, The Turmeric Co., Icelandic Glacial

Late July, August, and September (the dog days of summer with the constellation Sirius high in the night sky) are perhaps the stretch of the year in most climates of the Northern Hemisphere that really show you what your garden and plants are made of (for better or worse) after months of them producing and growing under long hours of sun, high heat, and either humidity or drought. Or smoke. It's also the season when many of our most durable and prismatic shrubs are showing off to great advantage in rounded forms, seed, fruit, and foliage colors, certainly in our wildlands. And possibly in our gardens? This is where Kevin Philip Williams and Michael Guidi of the Denver Botanic Gardens come in. Their new book Shrouded in Light: Naturalistic Planting Inspired by Wild Shrublands celebrates the great diversity, incredible beauty, and many gifts and lessons that the wild shrublands of our world have to offer our gardens and cultivated landscapes—environmentally and aesthetically—no matter where you garden. I want to echo Kevin and Michael's email greeting when I invited them to be guests on Cultivating Place: Welcome to the Shrub Club! Enjoy. Cultivating Place now has a donate button! We thank you so much for listening over the years and we hope you'll support Cultivating Place. We can't thank you enough for making it possible for this young program to grow even more of these types of conversations. In Episode 393, Patrick, Jeffrey, and Craig chat about trade deadline time dilation and then discuss five mostly baseball topics. 1. FRAUD WATCH: We had to bring it back after the Mariners got swept by the Angles (yes we recorded before the Randy Arozarena trade), but the Astros, Yankees, and Braves may not be beating the faud allegations either. 2. Rumour Has It: We recap some scuttlebutt right before the trades start flying in. 3. Around the Horn: Cal Quantrill got a little too hot (as did the Rockies bats), two former MVPs are dealing with injuries, and a ballpark food item we actually like for a change. 4. What to Watch: An NL East rivalry plus more NL Wild Card Shenanigans. 5. ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey] noun1. a summing up; summary. 2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. Nicole Dawes isn't the kind of CEO that operates from behind a desk. Throughout her career, Nicole, the founder of Late July Organic Snacks and Nixie Beverage Co., has consistently stressed the importance of building brands at the store level. Being in the field yields critical information about how products are performing on shelf, she says, and also strengthens relationships with retail buyers and merchandisers. That philosophy helped her build Late July into a nationally distributed brand that was acquired by snack giant Snyder Lance in 2014. And she's drawing on the same playbook to develop Nixie. Launched in 2020, Nixie markets organic flavored sparkling water sold in 12 oz. cans. The products are distributed in 11,000 stores and the brand has become the fastest-growing in its category within the natural channel. Earlier this month, Nixie entered the emerging better-for-you soda space with a new line of zero-sugar and zero-calorie sodas. The products come in three varieties – classic cola, root beer and ginger ale – and are available nationwide at Sprouts and regional retailers, including New Season's and Raley's. In this episode, Nicole discusses the development of the new soda line, why “doing what we say we're going to do” is the key to strong relationships with retail buyers, the challenge of deciding when to accept opportunities even if you're not ready for them and how the Nixie team works hand-in-hand with outsourced field support. Show notes: 0:35: Nicole Dawes, Founder & CEO, Nixie Beverage Co. – Nicole talks about equating time in the beverage industry to dog years, getting consumers to switch from Diet Coke to Nixie sodas, why acquirers buy strong brands and her belief that you “can't go into a retailer until you're prepared to support them with what they need.” She also explains why Nixie stuck to its retail strategy despite challenges caused by the pandemic, what convinces consumers to buy its products, what learnings can be gained from testing at a limited number of stores and why she describes herself as a “adrenaline junkie.” Nicole also discusses her hiring philosophy and why it's important for younger employees to trust their opinions and why she believes in offering help to as many other founders as possible. Brands in this episode: Late July Snacks, Nixie, Harken Sweets

The tortilla chip is often overlooked in the dip formula, but small differences in texture, and salt level can make a surprisingly big difference. Late July/early August is a great time to do some digital scouting and hang some stands. Understanding thermals and their impact on wind currents can help you take your scouting and stand sight selection to the next level. Thermals can make or break a hunt. Not only do they influence how deer move across the landscape, but hunting with thermals in mind can be the difference between you watching as a white tails bound off through the timber or you getting a chip shot at your target. But thermals can be tough to understand and predict. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Eric Ives of Red Bearded Predators for a little thermals 101. Eric hunts the hill country of southwestern WI, so he is no stranger to thermals, how they impact your hunting setups, and how deer use them to their advantage. I'm going to be getting on a new medication, so I definitely will be coming back. Episodes will start appearing in your feed again late July, and I will also be doing the next Prompt Engineering Mastermind late July.In the meantime, I have been helping organize a hackathon in San Diego: https://lu.ma/sdxai So if you're in California, we would love to have you come. And I've also been getting messages from people saying how much the Podcast and the Mastermind have been helpful for them. And that has been phenomenal right now. So thank you so much for those. I will be back soon. Depression is a thing, but I'm gonna be okay. And the new medication will help. Thanks. See you soon. Support the show

It's the 1950s in America, and a married couple are in the middle of a disagreement. In the background, an insect chirps. The disagreement becomes row, then it becomes something else. Still, the insect chirps. Louder, louder, and louder. Then...something else. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/full-fathom/message

We are just about to enter the climatologically driest time of the year in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, we are one of the driest locations in the country in late July. But why? The reasons are discussed in my podcast. And I will also review the weekend forecast, which will be a bit cooler and cloudier than normal. The cause? That pesky low pressure near our coast.
In this short podcast, I discuss the upcoming 20 hr Step 2/3 course that takes place from 7/25-30 (except 7/27) from 4-8 pm PST each day, the NBME test taking strategies course taking place from 5-7.30 pm PST on 7/22, and the 4 hr biostatistics bootcamp taking place from 4-8 pm PST on 7/21, all … Continue reading Announcement: Late July NBME Test Taking Strategies Course (7/22), 20 Hour Step 2/3 Review Course (7/25-30), and NBME Biostatistics Bootcamp (7/21)

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/324 Presented By: FishHound Expeditions Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Adam Cuthriell, owner of FishHound Expeditions, is here to break down fly fishing in Alaska and talk about the remoteness of Kodiak. We learn the step-by-step guide from booking to preparation to fishing. We find out what are the resident species in Alaska, the best times in a season to go after them, the recommended gear setup, and the flies that work great. We also hear an epic story of when Adam had a close encounter with a bear and almost got himself eaten. We learn some tips on how to avoid situations like that and what to do if you ever find yourself in such a situation. Fly Fishing Alaska Show Notes with Adam Cuthriell 05:10 - Trout in Alaska grow up to 2 feet because they eat meat - they use streamers, salmon smolt, and mice. 06:30 - Adam was a firefighter before he got into the travel business. He started with just a boat now he has 10 full-time guides, 18 boats, and 5 locations. 10:20 - Anchorage is the hub for Alaska. The following day, they fly out to the camp via helicopter. 12:10 - They use nice inflatable rafts. 14:00 - September is Adam's personal favorite time to fish. Most of the time during early summer, it doesn't get dark and you won't see stars. 14:40 - Trout are resident species, leopard rainbow trout, arctic grayling, and dolly varden trout - they get really fat. 16:00 - They encourage people to be wearing a headnet because sometimes the wind gets still and the bugs might bite. 18:45 - They fish 2 clients and 1 guide per boat but they offer a gear-boat deluxe trip with a gear-boat man who's one step ahead of the game - he sets up the camp, lunch, tent, fire, etc. 21:10 - They got silver salmon in Alaska - they're aggressive and big. Adam loves to fish them. 22:10 - On the top water, they fish pink poppers. 25:40 - We answer Chris Cook's question about rods and lines. FishHound Expeditions provides all gear - they fish 6 or 7 wt for trout, and 7 or 8 wt for salmon. For lines, they use a weight-forward floating line. 28:50 - They swing flesh flies. In September, they use streamers like Dolly Llama. 30:30 - A lot of the rivers that they operate in are small to medium size - a far cast is about 20 to 25 feet. 35:50 - Adam tells the story of when he almost got eaten by a bear - it's like one of those 'I Shouldn't Be Alive' stories. We learn some tips on how to avoid that kind of situation - be loud and don't surprise the bears 41:05 - FishHound start commercially operating in mid-May, then the season ends by the end of October. From November to April, they guide ice fishing. 42:35 - Adam has been living in Alaska for 10 years now. He used to live in Colorado. 43:50 - In winter, the snow gets thick from 600 to 1000 inches - Adam and his 2 year old daughter go snowboarding 45:00 - Adams tells us how we can do a DIY trip to Alaska just doing road-access fishing 47:50 - There's a fly shop in Anchorage Alaska called, Mossy's Fly Shop owned by Mike Brown. Adam mentions some more fly shops that are generous with information. 52:00 - Late July and August are when most of the resident species present - rainbows, arctic grayling, arctic char, kings, sockeye, pinks, chums, and silver salmons. You can catch 9 to 10 different species on one fly. 53:50 - Adam's biggest addiction is steelhead 54:46 - The Karluk River in Alaska has the largest returns of steelhead in the state. The best time to fish for them is in the Fall. 57:45 - Russ Miller was on the podcast at WFS 303 - he talked about when the gold bead was introduced for nymphs 1:00:30 - An extra rain jacket is a good thing to have or a good heavy-duty rain jacket made with gore-tex. Bring an extra set of waders too. 1:03:30 - You would need to get your fishing license ahead of time. You can have a digital copy on your phone but it's best to have it printed in case your phone dies or something. 1:05:00 - Any variation of the fly called, the Dolly Llama works best for fishing in Alaska. The other one would be a bead. Adams recommends a mouse fly too. 1:08:15 - The two-handed approach is awesome whether it's a switch rod or traditional spey 1:09:45 - Don't forget your sleeping bag. When you book a trip with FishHound, they will remind you via email of the things you need to bring, so make sure you read those emails. Fly Fishing Alaska Conclusion with Adam Cuthiell So there you go. If you want to book a trip of a lifetime in Alaska, you can connect with Adam and the FishHound team. Keep in mind the things you need to prepare for the trip like an extra-thick jacket, sleeping bag, headnet, fishing license, etc. FishHound will give you a checklist anyway and remind you via email what to bring once you book with them, so make sure you read those emails. Also, once you're there, remember to be loud and make your presence known to keep the bears away. And if you ever find yourself standing next to a hungry bear, scream angrily as loud as you can like a wolverine just like Adam did. It doesn't guarantee that the bear won't attack but at least increase your chance of surviving that situation. You have two options: be bigger than your fear or get eaten.
