Well, it is part 5 if a 6 parter so there's not an awful lot of When because most of the key events and decisions regarding The Keys of Marinus have already happened. There's quite a lot of What though, much of it regarding the returning William Hartnell's apparently shaky grasp of some of his lines - and as is often the case, the evidence that is usually presented about this requires a thorough re-examination. And as for Who:  well, we have four contributors who won't be troubling the cast list of Doctor Who again once this story has concluded, so there's plenty to find out about them: and two are given bittersweet remembrances by fellow Doctor Who thespians. So unlike Toby's usual podcasts, the Sentence won't run away with itself, but there should be plenty of interest within it...   Please support these podcasts on Patreon, where you will get advance releases, exclusive content (including a patron-only podcast - Far Too Much Information), regular AMAs and more. Tread Perilously celebrates its 500th podcast by going back to the beginning -- the first ever Doctor Who story: "An Unearthly Child." When Shoreditch area schoolteachers Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton have a conversation about an unusual student, Susan Foreman, their questions lead them to a junkyard at the end of Totter's Lane. Inside, they find no trace of Susan, but instead discover an out-of-place police box. Soon, they encounter a difficult old man who not only turns out to be Susan's grandfather, but an alien known only as The Doctor. And when he sets his time machine to 100,000 B.C., it begins a huge adventure for the foursome. Justin reacts to just how different The Doctor is in his first appearance. Erik recalls some previous episodes of the podcast. Susan finally gets a discussion all her own. Barbara and Ian also take focus, forcing Justin to reconsider one of his previously established archetypes. Erik tries to give producer Verity Lambert some of her due. The issues with episodes 2-4 are explored. The initial William Hartnell depiction of The Doctor leads to some myth-making about the show. Justin has a hard time holding onto Jacqueline Hill's name and the pair imagine other Doctor/companion teams dealing with the cavemen and their quest for fire.

Time Ram gets more low brow as we take David Tennant's 'School Reunion' and re-imagine it for the first Doctor, William Hartnell. That sounds like a bad idea, you say? Like that's ever stopped us! Anyway, it means that we get to press the 'don't land properly' switch on our Dodos, confuse Katarina and Kingdom, and explore Barbara's marital problem. Also: scenes happen. Controversy!

Welcome to an extra long episode of Doctor Who Literature, but one of the deepest and most rewarding ones we've ever produced. The subject is the February 1966 Doctor Who episode The Massacre, a troubled production where the original author tried to disclaim credit, the video is lost and only a few publicity photos survived, and the surviving audio is hard to untangle as William Hartnell only appears in a small handful of scenes. We have three guests this week to help unravel the story: --Repeat DWLit guest Denise Sutton joins Jason for a specially-recorded live introduction in Central London. --Repeat DWLit guest Ian Potter, a Black Archives writer, helps Jason try to unravel the troubled production (and troubled production team!) at the heart of the TV serial. --The Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, an American Baptist minister and Doctor Who fan, whose surname ties into this story, helps us understand the historical and religious context of August 1572. And although he doesn't appear in this episode, we could not have produced this week without James Cooray Smith, who literally wrote the book on The Massacre. We'll be back next week to cover another William Hartnell adventure, with a much shorter episode! If you enjoyed this episode, please follow, subscribe, and rate us! The Metebelis Two - a Doctor Who podcast

We discuss the recent animation of the William Hartnell story, The Celestial Toymaker. Overall, we think it successfully presented a boring, at times, story that is hard to follow with moving images for episodes 1–3 missing. Ben would like to see the animators push it even further away from the original broadcast visuals. David would have preferred the guest cast's likeness to be better expressed in the animation designs for the clowns, cards, and toys. The opening music is from The Celestial Toymaker, incidental music composed by Dudley Simpson. The closing music is "Push It" by Salt-n-Pepa. We recorded this episode on 22 July 2024.

*car breaks screech* Let's take a slight detour, dear listener...We've reached the end of the First Doctor's era, and we're not quite ready to say goodbye to William Hartnell! So, what better than to close his era out with a trip back to where it all started? This week, we're watching the docudrama An Adventure In Space And Time, made in 2013 for the 50th anniversary, that tells the story of the creation of Doctor Who. Before the junkyard, the police box, and the teachers, there was simply a Canadian TV exec, an iconic "pushy Jewish bird", a queer pioneer, and a grumpy older actor, who came together to create TV history...We celebrate the phenomenal stories of William Harnell and Verity Lambert, hail queen Jean Marsh, and cast a critical eye on the most vital part of the whole shebang - the wigs.
